Guitar playing is about what makes you feel good as a person and playing in a way that makes you happy, when your heart goes out of the way you play, it starts to clearly show. Richie has always been great at crafting solos for whatever song he's played on, Bon Jovi, solo stuff and session musician wise which he's done a lot of. Does anywhere really care that he plays a lot in the pentatonic scale??? How many guitarists actually do in one way or another let's be honest? Use whatever is there and play how you love to play! 🎸 Not how others want you to play all the time, we can all have opinions, but when we have things to say musically, let the artist say in the way they want to. ❤️

A criminally underrated guitarist! The commercial success of Bon Jovi and of course the central focus being Jon can be the only factors for being overlooked when discussing great guitar players. Gets my vote every time. Sambora is a virtuoso.
He isn't a virtuoso by any means (thank God) he is a great guitar player but more importantly a songwriter who plays the guitar. If Sambora went down the route of Yngwie ect...we would have had yet another shredder but lost out on a guy who can play the perfect guitar parts and solos for the song. There are no guitar players on Earth these days that impress me except a handful of classical players like Tatyana Ryzhkova ect.. Sambora has a beautiful touch and a slightly better voice than Bon Jovi. Sambora also covers a hell of a lot of ground with his playing and is very versatile. He sounds awesome on a strat and when he was playing his Sambora signature strat through a Marshall he sounded the bomb. I'm still searching for that strat with the F/R bridge star markers and the very flat board. If I ever see one I will be willing to pay a lot of money for one because I played one when they came out and they are the most comfortable strats out there with top notch build quality.
I love that his way of playing and singing is totally unique to him. I enjoy him more than any other guitarist. I love that he was self-taught and then got interested in lessons in his 50s. I love that he broke away from BJ, although I'm glad he got to do solos as a BJ employee.

I've always studied under Master Slash..and always will, but I have until recently overlooked the dynamic blues-rock melodic-shred of this other hatted guitar master. Well, I've learned 5 of his solos so far, and mean to incorporate him much more in future, in the ongoing development of my own sound! 😎👍

what would you have done in Jon's situation? Richie abandoned the group and never returned in the middle of the tour. Phil X is not a bad guitar player. Jon wasn't going to cancel the rest of the tour and wait for Richie to return.
Yeah, he used to be more virtuoso than most people think. Fast picker, flashy whammy-bar stuff, and always with the right choice of notes. However... that's what he USED to be. Nowadays he plays the same handful of licks over and over again... boring licks, at that. Probably he doesn't practice anymore. That said, some of the stuff shown in this video isn't exactly masterclass.
