Glad that you put out this video. As an officer, my guild saves old apps and revisit them when we have an opening. We know that at the start of an expansion or tier, that we will have raiders step away from the game or guild and that we need to be at ideal raid team size +2 in order to accommodate this.

The only part of the channel i see as entertainment is Drama Time, the rest like this one are guides or news for those who want to take the hobby more seriously (and there's nothing wrong with that).

I started playing in late MoP, but never got the courage to join a guild as I "feared the worst". I once panicked when I joined a LFR group instead of a LFD group. Social anxiety is a bitch. But I got over it. I wanted to join a guild in Legion, but didnt dare. Finally in BFA I joined a guild (with Preach nagging in the back of my head, lol).
Before BFA i just did casual stuff, leveled bunch of toons, explored the game, crafted casually and just did the story. After I joined a guild I(or we), did all the raids on heroic, I started collecting stuff, doing achievements, started learning how to earn gold and eventually got my brutosaur and now I(or we) did the m+ 15 acievement on time in season 4.
So thank you Preach for nagging my way into a guild. You da man. 👊

As a new player only recently been playing for 4-5 months. I have found it so hard to get into mythic content, and without experience nobody is willing to give you a chance. And also a big issue is when you do join a guild they only play with a select few and not involving anyone else outside their "click". Having no community in the game is making my world of warcraft experience suffer :(

Well, the thing is you can become part of their "click"-help guys with their m+ chest, maybe do arenas here and there or something else and you eventually will build some relationships in the guild
It's hard at the start but after some time and effort it will be fine
And after that in some new guild it will be easier for you-you've already done that before and maybe have some people you've encountered before

I have been with the same group of friends that has been ever growing for about 5 years now. We hopped guilds a couple times, sometimes someone left the group and we got two new people back, but im still playing with most of them. Me and a few others have been leading a guild now for the last 2 years-ish and always find time to play with each other. Honestly without the guild and friends i would have stopped playing ages ago. Finding the right guild might be very hard and partially luck based, but eventually you can find the right one. If you are ever looking for a guild, look up Sunday League on Frostwhisper-EU. You will be welcome :)

I pugged most of my weekly keys in BFA and a good part of Legion. I'm comfortable pugging content, been doing it since oqueue back in Mists. But is it enjoyable? Not so much. Not when you have to get your weekly key done and your guild's tank only runs once a week with his 4 friends. A raid team is 20 people and a key only takes 5. So unless your guild's tanks love M+ a lot of the dps are going to be pugging. In the end I just got tired of it and quit. Edit: And I am not blaming these tanks, just saying the numbers don't add up. So "finding a guild" won't necessarily get you a guild where everybody gets to do keys only with friends. Good luck to all of you still in the hunt.

Mike, I dunno' if you read these comments. But I've been watching your videos for years now. Since all the way back in MoP. For years I was in guilds where I was never *entirely* happy. They were decent guilds, and I accomplished a lot of things I'm proud of, but none of them have really shared my mindset for raiding and the end game in WoW. Fast forward to the end of BFA where I'm in a 8/12 Mythic guild and for the first time I couldn't be happier to step into a new expansion! I'm going in with absolutely no regrets.

  • @epi4625

Hi Preach. As a guild leader since patch 8.4, I thought I would share my opinions on this topic, guild leadership & what it's like to raid in a semi-casual AOTC guild.
For reference, I raid lead & guild lead Bros Before Hozen on the Aman'thul server (US/OCE).
The number one thing I can suggest to people who are looking for a guild to complete their content is - DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR GOALS FOR THE GUILD'S GOALS.
Find a guild that wants to do what you want to do **and has proven that they can do it in the past.**
A guild that hasn't done what you're wanting to do in the past will struggle to do it.
If the guild seems unorganized or no one can answer your questions, find a new one.
The most important thing you mentioned in this video that I notice in our guild community, is the NAME. The persona of a player and what they can do is MUCH more important than their class or specialization, especially in a casual guild like ours.
Our guild builds a community atmosphere around the game, and we are not just a guild in the game.
Find a guild like this that suits what YOU personally want. Don't settle.

  • @6ettomendes

You know, that bit of pep talk was pretty nice. There are many players who suffer social anxiety and hearing "it's ok, but go on anyway, don't give up" was pretty awesome. Thanks, Mike!

  • @micahparker4206

This is great advice, even for people who think it might not apply for them because they play casually. I run a community and guild with some friends that is focused around casual players. I can't tell you the number of people who have joined us who have said "I've always wanted to try raiding, but I have no clue what I'm doing". We drag people through normal. We drag them through heroic. Tons of people in our community who only ever planned to set foot in LFR have been able to get their AOTC this expansion. We're super laid back, and we have open raid nights where we'll bring just about anyone to raid. From doing that, we've also been able to skim the cream off the top and make a progression group. Prior to BfA the last time I was super involved in a guild was WotLK. After a while I convinced myself I didn't need a guild because I could get into pugs just fine, and I didn't want to commit to any sort of schedule. But I cannot stress how much building my guild has revolutionized the game for me. It has become so much more fun, and despite all the complaints about BfA, I'm having the most fun I've had in WoW in probably 10 years.

  • @amazingcoregaming3083
    @amazingcoregaming3083 4 года назад

Man I cannot stress enough how important it to to find the guild that’s right for you. I follows preachs advice. I wanted a chill guild that was ok with inexperienced raiders that run m+ every week and raid normal and heroic 1-2 nights a week. I saw so many guilds that have requirements of level X cloak. 3 mythic+ runs a week. Heroic only raids. Raid times that didn’t fit my schedule. Eventually I found a group of 5 friends who wanted to get into raiding. I applied and after discussing with them their plans I was in. It was perfect for me. after a couple of weeks we ended up with the minimum of 10 people to start raiding. We started normal and after completing that we decided to give heroic a try. We were doing well and decided to go for ahead of the curve. Only a few weeks ago after raiding heroic for a couple of months we got our ahead of the curve. Now we’re all taking it easy waiting for shadowlands. This kind of ended up as a story about me rather then my point which is to find a guild that you fit in with. But that’s the morel of the story. Please. Don’t join the wrong guild just because you can get a raid spot

  • @ye-roon
    @ye-roon 4 года назад

I've been fortunate to be in a great guild for the past few years. We dont raid mythic, but we have a very active M+ community and we've gotten ahead of the curve heroic for every raid tier since I've joined at the end of WoD. We raid 2 days per week, 2 hours per evening. We laugh, have fun, do boardgames via discord, play monster hunter, dabble in other games. If the tank's kid needs attention we let him give his kid the attention he needs. We're having discussions about the covenants, but not about whats the best ability, but what's the most fun lorewise. People know me, no matter what character i'm logged in curently. And I when play a dps, I want to perform, I want to be on the meters, my guild will never shout at me for underperforming, but I prefer to pull my weight. It is possible, find a guild. Great message Preach.

    I am a long-time WOW player. But I have not been a long-time raider.
It is your very channel that got me first joining a raid guild in WoD... and pushing to join a Mythic Guild in Legion.
I have since decided I am comfortable with a Heroic guild that achieves AOTC, and will happily stay raiding there. But I would not have made that step without video's like this.
Keep up the great content Preach!

i made myself a challenge in BfA. I wanted to do my Keystone-master with random groups in Season 4. And after i got the achievement done, all i could ask myself was "Why would anyone play in this kind of environmant...?" You will encounter everything in those random groups, from heroic/mythic boosted DD´s that do barely 20k DPS, to your mythic progress tank alt who just plays this alt in this patch because it´s not good enough for his progress guild but he´s fine with it. Everyhing can be in your group.
But mostly you´ll encounter selfish tryhards. Tryhards who want Meta-comps for their +12 kings rest. Tryhards who have no idea what the tactic here really is, or why people in guilds who do this key on +23 are doing that what they are doing. They mostly expect from you perfection to the maximum. Doesn´t matter if you´re a dad in a family who just wants to spend 2 hours in the evening doing a key or two, or if you´re like me a "semi mythic raider". they put high standards on everyone. Doesn´t matter who you are, or how your day went, you´re just in their group as a purpose to get their key done, at best intime. Literally the worst WoW experience i´ve ever had...

I remember when i came back to the game early S4, i was alone and i tried pugging as a tank. Some groups were nice but most of them were just toxic and obnoxious, still remember these idiots just failing basic mechanics ( cuts, aoe ect ) and blaming me for them, then i found a guild and i begun to play with some guildies and it was a blast, we climbed from the bottom to top 4 server with our respective classes, it was awesome and i can't wait to play with them in SDL and they became real friends.
Funny thing now is, i got experience from high keys, i could pug anywhere as i tank but i don't want to, i tried to pug a high key ( 24+ ) once, there was a mage, he was blasting, but he was a dickhead oh boy ...
The point of this game is having fun with friends and guildies, i just can't understand people who pug all the day, how can they not get tilted and stop the game at some point ?

One tip to all players looking for guilds ... I transfered before BFA and was looking for a guild. I just joined whatever was looking kinda solid. I was in 3 guilds within the first 3 month of BFA, because all the guilds just fell apart. If you look for a guild, check all guilds on your realmpool that you like, but make sure to check out the guild history! Did they raid for at least 2 addons? A stable core, guild history and a solid leadership are key for finding a good guild. Don't join all the guilds with bla bla ads in chat that are somewhere in mythic progress but only exist for 9 months. Check the logs. Check activity (are they still playing?). Talk to leadership and ask about the things you want and tell them what you can offer. If you do that, you will find good guilds.

How did you go about finding your guild?

  • @graysaltine6035
    @graysaltine6035 4 года назад +22

I don't buy it dude, that main tank that left is going to be replaced by whoever wins the trial, and that is gonna be the guy who has no life schedule, will play whatever is meta or what he is told to, gonna pick the covenant that is meta or he is told to, and that's it. All the other would-be tanks who joined your guild are gonna leave the guild and the cycle will continue for them. That's how "serious" M raiding guilds work. If they don't leave then the "worst that can happen" is they get manipulated into staying in as a "sub" whilst getting treated like garbage by the officers. Guilds can be so much worse than just telling you "no".
The organised mythic raiding scene is every bit as toxic as PUGing, if not more-so, and being in it almost made me quit the game in disgust. Having people ask you for logs going back 2 expansions just so you can join - let alone trial. Having people pull you into their "office" (private discord VC) so they can hurl abuse at you for having lower DPS whilst ignoring the fact you took zero fail damage for the fight, whilst another guy just went ham on the deeps and soaked every bad cos he was getting focus healed and gets a slap on the back. Watching people literally ignore priority targets so they can pad numbers by cleaving something else just to get a step up on the meter so they aren't the target of the abuse. Seeing people get benched 'cos they were 5 minutes late for being on the phone with a sick family member. Hearing someone's kids through their hot mic "daddy daddy can you-" and the dude just blows them off cos he's popping wings and going in. Seeing a dude who bags groceries for a living spend money he doesn't have on tokens to get BoEs that _just might_ score him a spot on the roster. Organised Mythic raiding is the worst of the game, it's beyond toxic.
Set yourself one goal: have fun. Find some people you enjoy being around. Join their guild. Have fun. If they do Mythic then great, if they do Heroic then that's great too. Take pride in the accomplishments of your group without comparing yourselves to everyone else. If it take takes you 4 months and 500 pulls to beat Heroic, then that kill is something you worked for as a guild. You should take every bit as much enjoyment from it as Method do for getting a world first Mythic clear. At the of the day, it's a game.
I have a lot of respect for you Preach, and I think you're a good dude, but you are showing a hefty lack of self-awareness in this video. You are not someone who can talk about this kind of thing because you _do_ live in a utopian world when it comes to WoW. Molten Core was 14 years ago - whatever struggles you had in the past are long gone. I know you mean well but you really come across like a Hollywood celebrity telling people to "stop being poor", after they luck out and hit the big time. You have the luxury of playing WoW for a living - there is no way you can have the same experience with the game as the general population, no matter how many "pugging my way up" videos you make.

I used to have the mindset of having to be in a guild, having structured set raid times and raising alts to please others in those guilds and to be honest it made me start to hate logging in or it would just fall apart as most guilds do. Since shortly after Panda I have just stayed in my personal guild with a couple of friends and have enjoyed the game much more since. I still have gotten every ahead of the curve ach in Heroic raids and have run high M+ runs (15+) weekly by just hooking up with a friend and pugging what we need. I'm not saying being in a raiding guild is bad and if you looking to mythic raid that is the way to go but it isn't for everyone and you can still easily get content done that your looking to do.

I am legitimately excited for Shadowlands. My best friend and I play together on retail but they have no clear goals and half the guild goes on hiatus for months at a time due to IRL commitments. I joined a guild in Classic and we help each other farm for stuff, we dungeon, we raid. I hate PvP but we did a guild AB yesterday and it was the most fun I have had in a long time because I like the people I play with. I know we aren't going to be cutting edge in Shadowlands but they started a guild in retail and it's going to be so nice to hang out with people that just want to do things together and are genuine and like accomplishing things.

As a guild leader, I agree that it's wise to find a guild before it all goes off. The ones who joins early on, and really shows they click well with the guild, will likely have their raid seats solidified when the new stuff actually do begin. The time to socialize is honestly a pretty vital part in both getting a seat, when the team is being set up, as well as knowing if the guild is for you.
As for the guilds who only runs with a select few for everything: Run, and dkn't look back. If the guild can't even be bothered to have some fun M+ runs with you, they're not gonna show you a good time.

While I do understand the power of being in a guild, there are alteratives and options if you don't want to leave your current guild, transfer servers or level a new toon on a new server.
My Alliance guild on MoonGuard is only a few people, but we are actually a part of a small community that raids, does mythic plus, and some slight PvP. We are learning group that prefers taking the person over anything else, having fun doing it, and building strategies for our group makeup. We are currently 3/12M and learning Shad on mythic and while that may seem "noobish, ultra casual" to some folks, we have enjoyed the journey.
We plan on going into Shadowlands with the same mindset as we are with this current raid tier of " clear heroic and when mythic unlocks cross realm, we go into mythic". We won't force someone to transfer even if that means we wait a little longer to learn mythic. We support each other as a team even while being on different servers.
As proof, look up Tantrika-MoonGuard, as that is my blood dk tank and one of the leaders of the community

Also, if you are mid to low pop, transfer. Best money you can spend is going to a high or full server. As someone who did the low /mid pop until legion, it’s a totally different world. Prices of things on AH are lower, queues are stupidly fast (I remember mine being 30 min LFR as a healer or tank), guilds a plenty for a different plan types, etc. Yes it’s real money that can be hard to swallow for some at first but it’s an investment for the next 2-3 years with SL. Tell yourself in Oct you will choose to eat out less 4-5 times to make up the money difference. Don’t go out one less night of drinking to make up the money difference. Hell, get a side gig with Doordash for a week or two to make the extra. Changing to a high pop server is worth it. But also, make sure you investigate which works for you time zone wise AND latency wise. Make a new toon on it and level to 20 and see if you have issues at peak times.

Preach’s main point seems to be that if you want to do “high end content”, joining a guild is the most likely way to get what you want and now is the time. Yup, pretty obvious, and good advice if you are one of the few people who wants to do “high end content”.
Two things that I would remind Preach though are 1) the majority of players aren’t really interested in “high end content.” Not everyone who drives a car wants to drive formula one or Nascar. The effort and time required would be huge and the results probably wouldn’t be worth the effort. 2) Not everyone wants or needs to be social. I get it, this is a social game, but that 15-year-old introverted kid that gets hit by his dad five times a day because he isn’t good at sports probably doesn’t need to get beat up again by that 20-year-old guild leader who doesn’t need another ret paladin for “his” raid group.
As players, we define our goals in-game. If your goals need a group for success and your personality can deal with a guild, go for it. But if your goal doesn’t require all of this churn, or you think you would be happier not being in a guild, it’s no one’s business. You do you.

The whole "it feels like a job" thing is exactly why I don't raid, and at this point in my life, rarely group. Part of me desperately wants to be able to join a guild/group and hang with them, but I also want to be able to do what I want, when I want, and don't want to deal with people who are unreliable. ("Yeah, I'll log in on Friday and do that run," and they never show up when I took the time to do so, etc.) I honestly don't want to feel so disdainful towards others, but my years of dealing with pugs in WoW has soured my opinion on the playerbase as a whole. It's not fair to the good players out there, but the game currently doesn't encourage/reinforce good behavior, only punishes bad behavior.
    I don't like being so jaded. :(
Edit: To clarify, I don't expect people to log on at my whim, but I've lost count how many times I've taken the time to commit to something (a group, mount run, powerleveling, gear grinding [common in old school FFXI]), and have one or more people that also committed decide to just beg off with no warning or reason, making it that much more difficult to complete for those that did bother to show up. It's frustrating, and it gets really old, really fast. It's also why I don't raid--I can't guarantee when I can do it, much less when I want to do it, so therefore, I do not. It wouldn't be fair to those who take the time to do it.

This was a good to hear. BFA was rough for me mostly due to work. I work mostly nights which is when 90% of guilds raid. Since covid and specifically last month my schedule finally opened up and I can finally raid again come shadowlands.

I don't buy into the doom and gloom coming from the big content creators, but what Preach says here is so important. If you're not in a like-minded guild for Shadowlands you're asking to be frustrated. The raider.io factor is already toxic and if it doesn't get worse it's at least going to be just as bad. The key here is "like-minded" - I've been in my guild for 10+ years - we don't do Mythic raiding, we celebrate when we clear normals, we don't push players into specs (and covenants now) for that extra 1%, we chat a lot, etc. But we are ALL on the same page with what we want and expect to accomplish. Find what fits you - don't try to get into a high-end guild if it doesn't fit your style, and by the same token, don't settle for more casual than you want to be.

I am in a guild and i don't play the flavor of the month spec on my mage (or atleast i didn't until we hit M N'zoth) but i've become well known within the guild for just being a good player who is able to push through with their spec/class despite how they perform less and our main tanks have even referred to me as the "anti affix" for M+ keys. most guilds don't care too deeply about what you play as long as you're a decent person and a alright player.
Raid focused guilds are a great place to be in, especially if you want to do m+ because most raiders will strive to do their weeklies or perhaps even want to push keys, in a proper raid guild you will never ever have to deal with puggies again, unless you intend to do several heroic raids for 3+ alts or something

I have been living the pug life for 5+ years, this tier some irl friend groups got together to form a guild and i decided to join. We had 0 expectations and just started playing the game and raiding 1 day a week. Finished 9/12M while keeping it chill, the game has never been more fun.

Honestly team, I've been competitive M+ pusher since it came out and i just want to tell you folks looking to get into progress, DONT BE SCARED progress is a learning experience, how good you are is a rather relative thing. Mistakes happen so often and its fiiineee... the difference between organized runs and pugs are insanee. When u fuck up with pugs it's stress and shouting. When u f up with guilds its fun and bants. One of my co tanks simply couldnt not fuck up aggramar on progress, a great player that just.. brain farted on it, we rip on him, we fuck around with it. My "we are fineee" has become a meme in our community , never mind my tendency to overpull in high keys.... its fineee ull make it.

As the recruiter for a mythic guild, 100% this. Just reach out - it doesn't cost you much and I'm much more likely to put time into someone who seems like they want to be part of our group than to hound people posting in the 'LF guild' section. Even if you end up on the 'bench' part of the roster right now, it's anyone's guess what will happen come Castle Nathria. If you stuck it out and were available your odds of becoming a core raider shoot up.

Very good advice from Preach. Awesome encouragement to everyone.

What I wanted for a long time was the ability to just solo pvp/warfronts etc and still be able to get competitive gear, but not sure that will ever happen. I loved RIFT in the early days for this reason..and a few others with the talent trees etc. Some hard thinking is needed before deciding what to do here since once we get going we all know how much time we sink into this.

Names vs class - you brought it up a few times and I just wanted to say, that while I don’t PUG often, I make a point to use people’s char names, and I encourage others to do the same. It’s kind of basic respect to another person but also simply that if you don’t like being referred to as “warrior” or whatever, so why would you do the same to others?
It really takes so little effort to look at your unitframes to see their name. If they have weird letters or a really long one, just shorten it.
And yes, find a guild too.

I only play for fun now, no schedules, no drama, no pressure, no feelings of having to do something I don't want to do.
In the past most guilds got me more engaged with the game but they also made the game feel like a second job and I really hate that idea (and that happened in every MMO that I've played with a serious guild)
Also, I don't even know how I am supposed to play modern WoW with such a focussed mindset. I think it would either burn me out quickly and get me stressed out or it would bore me to death. For me playing WoW is like watching a fishtank. It's mildly entertaining, barely enough to not bore you instantly but really not enough to keep your attention. That's why I watch streams or vids or whatever on a second monitor while playing the game.
This might sound awful to others but I wouldn't want to do anything else. When I now play story driven games or games that are super competitive/difficult and that need me to focus ffor hours the entire time, then I am getting bored super fast because usually what I watch on my second monitor is just more fun than the mediocre story or game mechanics or whatever I get with most games, so I go back to mount/transmog farming or crafting/gathering, while watching movies.
I think at this point in my life MMOs are rather an enhancement of the other media I consume on a daily basis, than the other way around

A lot of people miss one part that in my mind is crucial - look for likeminded people. You like to raid heroic only in a bit more laidback atmosphere? Don’t apply for a mythic oriented guild and vice versa. I personally hate looking for a new guild which has been the reason for staying in guilds for far too long. But at the end of the day after some good hunting I found a pretty nice likeminded guild with awesome people in it. The pug world sux big time really
