I still say LFR spine was the first Mythic fight in the game. If you killed that with a bunch of random with no communication then you can handle almost anything the game can throw at you.
I never looked at LFR in a way for learning the fights but yes to experience content in a casual way, since because of my job having various shifts i can't really guild raid, and atleast lfr lets me experience the dialogs, cinematics and so on without having to do so on youtube
You dont have to guild raid at all to experience it. Sign up to a normal group and mostly you are even done faster than LFR. LFR is for socially awkward people.

In the past, my kids, who got me into gaming, after I bought a Nintendo system way back in the late Nineties with Duck Hunt and the damn laughing dog, started playing cartridge RPGs, ultimately PC ones and finally this. Now my kids have no time and I, still consulting at age 68, need a break. So, I will see what my guild wants to do with me, or go LFR. Thanks for The Basics series.

What actually happens in recuitment scenarios: "This guys knows what logs are so he's probably competent enough for heroic." This is a great video and almost everything you said is right but going trough logs to improve performance rarely happens in normal/hc guilds. And if it is done it's almost never done right.
That's some real shit right there. Hell, just the fact that I say I know what pre-pots are has pretty much gotten me into any heroic guild I've attempted to get into.
LFR is basically a training dummy+. It's a playground. It doesn't necessarily let you learn the boss encounters, it's not a raid, rather, it's a place where you can play WITH the raid. Like you CAN choose to drop your bleed on SLG or avoid echolocation on Shriekwing, or you can not. You can figure this stuff out and get comfortable with it. The big difference between LFR and normal raids is that you don't need to worry about how bad the rest of the players are or whether you will get invited. You just go in. The downside is that it's a clown show and things are moving all over the place in a crazy way. But things like logging your LFR attempts to apply to a normal raiding guild? That's actually legit crazy. There's no "normal raid" guilds, though there are guild that raid normal. Of those guilds that raid normal, none of them are going to request applications that detail how good you did on raid mechanics. Even heroic guilds aren't going to care about that. They'll take pretty much any warm body that's willing to show up likely. The only guild who will pore over your application will be a mythic guild, and if you apply with an LFR log to a mythic guild, even if you show how you cleared your bleed right away on SLG, well, I wish you the best of luck. LFR is fine, it's a good way to get renown, it's a good way to practice your rotation and some of the mechanics that are left in the raid. It's fine for getting transmogs. If you want to get into a guild that does normal or heroic, just ask. You can say "I'm looking forward to raiding and LFR is really just not cutting it, I want more of a challenge." if you're asked why, but nobody wants your LFR logs. That might be good info and practice for YOU, but if you're trying to join a group that wants logs for you to join a normal raid progression group, RUN AWAY FAST, these guys will be awful and toxic. This isn't normal behavior. Normal is so easy that you have nothing you should need to prove apart from a desire to be there and learn, even as a low experience character. That said, once there, feel free to practice your rotation or making use of your new legendary or managing your cooldowns or whatever in LFR. Use it to get better, use it to test your weakauras, use it to practice a few mechanics.
That last line really is the golden rule: play well. Met so many cool people by just performing well and getting invited by people you've playing with in the past :)
i've been farming anima in lfr and one lil point- trying to cleanse a bleed in lfr slg is generally impossible. that poor sod sees a circle around them and they will speed boost off a cliff to get away from the raid despite 3 people chasing them to cleanse.... same with kael'thas.... just accept we"re gonna lose a person every time ember blast happens and thats just how it goes. so many lfr fights would greatly benefit from a priest or two with some well placed life-grips lol
I for one appriciate LFR at times (like now) where I either can't put in the hours to commit to a guild, or main a underdog who can't get a spot in pugs etc. Because regardless, I wanna see the raids, the bosses the enviorement (spells?). I think it's a nice addition for people like me. Therefor I nighter praice it or bash it like so many ... others ahem. I simply just appriciate that I can get to experience the raids and whatever cutcenes there might be attatched.
I never thought about using lfr for learning finger memorization. I always struggled with this when I would log an alt I rarely played and would use unranked pvp to practice up but lfr is a much better (and less annoying) way to do that, thanks!
I was in a heroic PUG of CN to hunt transmog while my guild was on break and the tank absolutely did take Huntsman on a walk around the room. I left that group right away.
A good example of holding your cooldowns is sludgefist. Where you use them on first pillar instead of on pull. And then they usually line up for the other pillars
Honestly... story mode. Back before plots were all in books... story development in raids was a thing. And LFR is a good way to see the story and get a little gear without the stress of tryhard and high pressure progression guilds
the best thing that i did in order to make sure i stopped staring at my bars was to download a ui addon and make it so that my bars are invisible unless i mouse over them. it definitely helped me with being more aware of my surroundings.
Please do a video on Keybinding and hand positioning. So many keyboard turners and not making good use of the keyboard realistate for keybinds! Love these Basics with Preach series, keep them up!
This is gonna be a long message but here's my experience with LFR I started at MOP, 5.0, got to max lvl, did one LFR and quit and didn't come back until 5.4. I remember there was a actual progression through all the LFR raids in MOP. Bracuse the heroic dungeon gear didn't just replaced old LFR gear. I didn't know there was other difficulty until the very end. I tried to get Oqueue, but didn't understand all the lobby names so I quited, but I remember it was a fun experience. I played 8.3.5 later on bracuse I started watching alot of asmongold. Now from all the content I watched , I now know about the other difficulties. What was very confusing to me at first was that heroic dungeon were dropping better gear than all LFR aside from nyalotha. I did one run in LFR and it got me prepped for normal.which wasn't that much different than LFR aside from xanesh and eyeball boss from what i can remember. Eventually I got 12/12 ,heroic and joined a guild and did 4/12 on mythic because they were bored ,and than pre patch got annoouced. S So I don't know what's worse. Watching ppl die in LFR or heroic vex in pub lol. But yeah, seems like LFR is useless in 8.3 because you can get better gear from many different sources. I didn't play shadow lands cuz losing all the haste from currption was going to make the game slow and I didn't want that
LFR is great for people to practicing their arrogance. Either people have the stride that it’s LFR and mechanics don’t matter or they strut about how they have mythic clear experience and how you suck for making a mistake.
I understand dying once or twice on a boss. But when you are refusing to get out of the shadow before N'zoth's tentacle comes down every time I'm going to look at you like you are an idiot.
And how often do players kindly explain why someone failed instead of jumping down their throats? Most people do not even know how to give polite constructive criticism and advice without it sounding like an attack. This social failure is what makes a system like LFR feel so toxic.

they should make it so its visual aids in lfr for normal so when you go into normal it kinda instinct In ffxiv Titania in lfr you have a visual aid when you do extreme there is no visual aids.
I hope there is a keybind basics video coming, i do use keybinds but i only manage 13 binds for some years now. It's fine for everyday stuff but i feel limited. Maybe you could share your keybinds?
@Preach Gaming, maybe that could be a future basics video, or basics+, key binding, learning to put common abilities in a similar place like an aoe or interrupt so no matter what class you're on similar abilities will be in a muscle memory familiar place
I find it funny that Preach thinks clickers will be able to understand everything they're doing wrong and work on it/fix it without any guidance when they got max level without realizing being a clicker is not great.
I was in LFR just yesterday to refarm Renown, after switching my Hunter to Kyrian. Moste of the players where in for all Bosses and we where 2x 10/10M, 3x 8/10M, 1 5/10M and me 3/10M all refarming Renown. Was quite funny to see :D
All of this video was basically how you can use LFR to improve yourself to then do higher difficulties, but i want to point out another aspect that seems to be overlooked. LFR is great for average, casual people who just wants to experience the big cool fights and the lore that's locked behind raids! When going through the story of shadowlands it would kinda suck if so much of it(s climax) were tied to a raid that you might not have been able to do if LFR didn't exist. Especially if you're a casual player without a network in the game. If you stand in the fire, of course you're going to die eventually, but it's nice that there is a mode where you won't get too harshly punished for doing some mechanics wrongly. It's no fun joining a normal raid if you're a casual player, say as a dps, and dying to a mechanic because you did something slightly wrong near the start of the fight. Then laying there dead for the next minutes watching the boss' health go down because healers are saving the valuable combat resses for an equally casual tank or a healer. While I'm all for people using LFR as a stepping stone to practice rotations, keybinds and so on, I'm also massively in favor of anything that improves accesibility for players in general.
you can find some of the high HP elite rares in the Maw and as a tank spec, you should have no problem practicing cooldowns. As a ~190 ilvl druid i was using berserk i think 3 times during fights with ~700K HP elites
It's the only type of raiding I have the patience to do. Normal raiding takes far too long and people take it far too seriously for me to even bother signing up for it.
LFR in WoW is done so bad. FF14 is handling this so much better. From Releasing the Fights day one. And giving incentives to keep them alive. The first Eden Tier from 2019 takes today 5-10 Minutes to pop the Queue. How long took Ghuun Raid LFR when Nyalotha was current? 1-2 hours? If you try this at Primetime.
From my perspective its good for a few things. Crisis training. Want to get honed on being a great healer? LFR is the place to do it, because the damage will be out of control. Its also good for learning how to avoid damage as a DPS and healer. Its also okay for getting upgrades that you're missing. Sure, its not going to be as good as in proper raids, but it'll do in a pinch until its your turn to get that weapon or trinket that's in high demand. And lastly, it gives you more appreciation for a guild raiding group. You might think some of your teammates are bad - but you'll soon realise they are actually still above average overall very quickly. It makes you realise things could be much, much worse.
See I’d disagree with your take, the damage is often not enough to warrant avoiding it as even dps. You can literally face tank mechanics that would Kill you in heroic and severely cripple in normal, also healing people is rewarding people for bad play and they never learn. I’ve personally always disagreed with the lfr system in its current form, either remove it and use normal as your introduction for raiding or literally make it have no mechanics entirely and be purely story mode, 90% of lfr is faceroll then you’ll get 1 boss who’s mechanics don’t lend themselves to that kind of system who ends up requiring 5 nerfs to be brute forced to kill it,
@@Darkfrost7456 Well that's the point. You CAN face tank mechanics - but avoiding them is good practice. Because once you get into real raids you can't just keep DPSing through mechanics, so why get into bad habits?

I would argue that you do learn to raid with lfr. You just don't learn that raids normal, hc or mythic mechanics. You learn that bosses have several mechanics, learn priority targets for dps or healers, the need to work together and not just tunnelvision through. The mechanics are just simplified or the harder ones even absent.
I cant ever imagine committing to a WoW guild since I play so on and off these days so LFR is good to see what the new raids look like... and then I peace out until the next patch
I been using LFR with alts to farm anima, gets my quest for anima done for a renown and lets me upgrade all my gear to 197, so renown + anima to gear my alts to near 200ilvl? Useful!
Coming from FF14, I was kinda surprised by how easy LFR is. Easy gear though. Looking forward to normal and heroic if I can ever get over my social anxiety in WoW.
Some people have full time jobs and families that come first and so don’t have time to join a guild to raid, will never get into a raid because they can’t put the time in required to get accepted into a raid. Lfr is a good way to see end of game content for people who have full time life’s. The amount of people who are so entitled and think lfr shouldn’t exist is just sad this game is for everyone not just a select group.
Those lfr tactics are real, boys..... me, trying to tank lfr denathrius where I'm supposed to and going through the portals when I'm supposed to, and the other tank called me an idiot because apparently that's not what you do in lfr. 🤷
I am a solo player who always starts an expac late so I can play without being timegated on almost everything. I do lfr so I don’t have to be on someone else’s schedule and send a resume and waste time acting as if I like people just to play the game and progress. And since I start late it’s not like I have to push higher for better gear because the next patch and next tier is just around the corner. Lfr is a fantastic tool for people like me and it really gets a bad rap from people who don’t understand this.
U,r missing out on allot of new experiences and fun,better to look for a group of people where u dont feel the way u described and compensate it with mediocrity of lfr.
I totally agree with you and many people miss that point as indicated by Mohammad's reply. I have a family, gaming time is always limited and unscheduled. I can do a LFR quickly or even one boss in 15 minutes. Done! I have a great guild with great friends, but I also don't have 2 to 3 hours twice a week at a specific time because of my schedule. If it wasn't for LFR I would have missed some great story arcs. I always felt like LFR was built for players like me.
My lfr get in do what I can and die so I can loot and watch what is happening and know what I should do and don't do....not learning the raid learning what not to do
How about we have Mythic Plus affixes in World of Warcraft's Raid Scene? Tyrannical, Fortified, etc in each tier of raid content... lol And the worst one is LFR Tyrannical.
I don't think LFR was created so people could learn to raid, I think it was always intended for people who can't or just aren't interested in "real raiding" so they can see the narrative and complete main quests.
No idea if it would be something to try out. But if you have a friend that plays an AoE class. You can dual them then try to do your rotations on the dummies while they use random AoE to fuck you over.
LFR is great for someone without a lot of time/friends to see the content. Drops are not even close to “real” raids, so it hurts no one. Thats what it means to me. I never thought of it as a practice ground.
hot take: get rid of LFR and let people queue for Normal. hell, let people queue for Heroic. it still requires people to learn the fights and i think it would overall increase the skill floor for WoW players.
The first 3 or 4 weeks of a wing the normal mechanics are in play. After 4 weeks it is horrible. I tend to use it for just Anime farming. On weeks I dont normal RAID.
great fantasy world where people recognize good play... 90% of the People in WoW just recognize the DPS meter. They don't understand that maybe I did less DPS then the other guy, but I did mechanic properly and the other guy required to be Brez 3 time in the fight. They don't understand that if I help soak up the orb on Denathrius as a melee I cannot do DPS on the boss at the same time so obviously my DPS will be lower then the hunter who keep DPSing even while soaking. They don't understand that waiting 5 second for my cooldown to come back before the pull will make that pull that much easier and save time on the key long run etc... I even met people complaining that y tank (who out healed half the healer of the group) was not doing enough DPS... sure I cannot DPS since the healer are bad, but they only see the DPS meter, not anything else. The WoW community are at 90% (and I'm generous here, I could easily say 95% or even more) idiot who watch a video, notice that the MDI players are turning left, and pulled mega pack so they learn that you need to turn left and pull mega pack, without understanding that the MDI players do on average 10k DPS and the affixes on that week were not bolstering or bursting. So if you turn right or if you pull smaller pack because you are a good player and adapt your strategy to the group you have, they start complaining and leave your key ( before leaving WoW, how many key went super well, just for the healer to leave because the tank took a smaller pack then what MDI showed during bursting week... So no, very few player in WoW are actually able to recognize actual good play, all they see if the DPS meter MDI and world first mythic race, without understanding he decision and the reasoning behind.

My favorite place to really learn how to use my class is actually Torghast.

It says a lot how the people most sour about LFR are the people least affected by it.
Often times I am only interested in seeing the art assets in the raids so I just do lfr for a couple times and go back to classic

If it was the huntsman you were right to do it, if it was the dog then they were achievement farming for glory.

More commonly used=easier to press, key spell that have niche use, more exotic hotkey that u can't accidentally fat finger
And get used to key modifiers(alt,shift)+easy to press button so to avoid wrist injuries in the long run

I mainly used LFR to get legendary recipes and for fixing UI stuff

they should make it so its visual aids in lfr for normal so when you go into normal it kinda instinct In ffxiv Titania in lfr you have a visual aid when you do extreme there is no visual aids.
I hope there is a keybind basics video coming, i do use keybinds but i only manage 13 binds for some years now. It's fine for everyday stuff but i feel limited. Maybe you could share your keybinds?
@Preach Gaming, maybe that could be a future basics video, or basics+, key binding, learning to put common abilities in a similar place like an aoe or interrupt so no matter what class you're on similar abilities will be in a muscle memory familiar place
I find it funny that Preach thinks clickers will be able to understand everything they're doing wrong and work on it/fix it without any guidance when they got max level without realizing being a clicker is not great.
I was in LFR just yesterday to refarm Renown, after switching my Hunter to Kyrian. Moste of the players where in for all Bosses and we where 2x 10/10M, 3x 8/10M, 1 5/10M and me 3/10M all refarming Renown. Was quite funny to see :D
Well i use LFR to check my UI if i make some unit frames, weak auras, raid frame changes :D

All of this video was basically how you can use LFR to improve yourself to then do higher difficulties, but i want to point out another aspect that seems to be overlooked.
LFR is great for average, casual people who just wants to experience the big cool fights and the lore that's locked behind raids! When going through the story of shadowlands it would kinda suck if so much of it(s climax) were tied to a raid that you might not have been able to do if LFR didn't exist. Especially if you're a casual player without a network in the game.
If you stand in the fire, of course you're going to die eventually, but it's nice that there is a mode where you won't get too harshly punished for doing some mechanics wrongly. It's no fun joining a normal raid if you're a casual player, say as a dps, and dying to a mechanic because you did something slightly wrong near the start of the fight. Then laying there dead for the next minutes watching the boss' health go down because healers are saving the valuable combat resses for an equally casual tank or a healer.
While I'm all for people using LFR as a stepping stone to practice rotations, keybinds and so on, I'm also massively in favor of anything that improves accesibility for players in general.

you can find some of the high HP elite rares in the Maw and as a tank spec, you should have no problem practicing cooldowns. As a ~190 ilvl druid i was using berserk i think 3 times during fights with ~700K HP elites
It's the only type of raiding I have the patience to do. Normal raiding takes far too long and people take it far too seriously for me to even bother signing up for it.

LFR is unironically great for learning triage as a healer since everyone has a death wish.
From my perspective its good for a few things.
Crisis training. Want to get honed on being a great healer? LFR is the place to do it, because the damage will be out of control. Its also good for learning how to avoid damage as a DPS and healer.
Its also okay for getting upgrades that you're missing. Sure, its not going to be as good as in proper raids, but it'll do in a pinch until its your turn to get that weapon or trinket that's in high demand.
And lastly, it gives you more appreciation for a guild raiding group. You might think some of your teammates are bad - but you'll soon realise they are actually still above average overall very quickly. It makes you realise things could be much, much worse.
See I’d disagree with your take, the damage is often not enough to warrant avoiding it as even dps. You can literally face tank mechanics that would Kill you in heroic and severely cripple in normal, also healing people is rewarding people for bad play and they never learn. I’ve personally always disagreed with the lfr system in its current form, either remove it and use normal as your introduction for raiding or literally make it have no mechanics entirely and be purely story mode, 90% of lfr is faceroll then you’ll get 1 boss who’s mechanics don’t lend themselves to that kind of system who ends up requiring 5 nerfs to be brute forced to kill it,
@@Darkfrost7456 Well that's the point. You CAN face tank mechanics - but avoiding them is good practice. Because once you get into real raids you can't just keep DPSing through mechanics, so why get into bad habits?
@@andromidius Thats the point no one is really using lfr to learn mechanics but they don't need to learn if they can just take them to the face and get loot.
I would argue that you do learn to raid with lfr. You just don't learn that raids normal, hc or mythic mechanics. You learn that bosses have several mechanics, learn priority targets for dps or healers, the need to work together and not just tunnelvision through. The mechanics are just simplified or the harder ones even absent.
no desk so i need to click and it can be awkward at times, i have all the binds i can, but sometimes i miss 2-3 on some classes.
I only use lfr when I am late to patch and I am gearing and grabbing unique stuff like renown, or artifact power and stuff like that.
I cant ever imagine committing to a WoW guild since I play so on and off these days so LFR is good to see what the new raids look like... and then I peace out until the next patch

I been using LFR with alts to farm anima, gets my quest for anima done for a renown and lets me upgrade all my gear to 197, so renown + anima to gear my alts to near 200ilvl? Useful!

Coming from FF14, I was kinda surprised by how easy LFR is. Easy gear though. Looking forward to normal and heroic if I can ever get over my social anxiety in WoW.
there is no social aspect in pugs, you sign up and if you get accepted nobody will talk to you except to leech your gear
lfr good to avoid guild drama.
Some people have full time jobs and families that come first and so don’t have time to join a guild to raid, will never get into a raid because they can’t put the time in required to get accepted into a raid.
Lfr is a good way to see end of game content for people who have full time life’s.
The amount of people who are so entitled and think lfr shouldn’t exist is just sad this game is for everyone not just a select group.

I am a solo player who always starts an expac late so I can play without being timegated on almost everything. I do lfr so I don’t have to be on someone else’s schedule and send a resume and waste time acting as if I like people just to play the game and progress. And since I start late it’s not like I have to push higher for better gear because the next patch and next tier is just around the corner. Lfr is a fantastic tool for people like me and it really gets a bad rap from people who don’t understand this.
U,r missing out on allot of new experiences and fun,better to look for a group of people where u dont feel the way u described and compensate it with mediocrity of lfr.
I totally agree with you and many people miss that point as indicated by Mohammad's reply. I have a family, gaming time is always limited and unscheduled. I can do a LFR quickly or even one boss in 15 minutes. Done! I have a great guild with great friends, but I also don't have 2 to 3 hours twice a week at a specific time because of my schedule. If it wasn't for LFR I would have missed some great story arcs. I always felt like LFR was built for players like me.
I would use my cd's on sire ads instead of meaningfull dmg so my pad dmg gets higher. Got to remind yourself whats rly important.

How about we have Mythic Plus affixes in World of Warcraft's Raid Scene? Tyrannical, Fortified, etc in each tier of raid content... lol

I don't think LFR was created so people could learn to raid, I think it was always intended for people who can't or just aren't interested in "real raiding" so they can see the narrative and complete main quests.
The only thing LFR is "good" for is making gear ilvl jumps higher than they should be with each patch...
To be fair it was pretty much M0 ilvl, which makes the difference more reasonable than was historically the case

It's also great for when you just hit 60 and Sire Denathrius drops your BiS legendary
No idea if it would be something to try out. But if you have a friend that plays an AoE class. You can dual them then try to do your rotations on the dummies while they use random AoE to fuck you over.
LFR is great for someone without a lot of time/friends to see the content. Drops are not even close to “real” raids, so it hurts no one. Thats what it means to me. I never thought of it as a practice ground.
hot take: get rid of LFR and let people queue for Normal. hell, let people queue for Heroic. it still requires people to learn the fights and i think it would overall increase the skill floor for WoW players.
The first 3 or 4 weeks of a wing the normal mechanics are in play. After 4 weeks it is horrible. I tend to use it for just Anime farming. On weeks I dont normal RAID.

great fantasy world where people recognize good play... 90% of the People in WoW just recognize the DPS meter. They don't understand that maybe I did less DPS then the other guy, but I did mechanic properly and the other guy required to be Brez 3 time in the fight. They don't understand that if I help soak up the orb on Denathrius as a melee I cannot do DPS on the boss at the same time so obviously my DPS will be lower then the hunter who keep DPSing even while soaking. They don't understand that waiting 5 second for my cooldown to come back before the pull will make that pull that much easier and save time on the key long run etc... I even met people complaining that y tank (who out healed half the healer of the group) was not doing enough DPS... sure I cannot DPS since the healer are bad, but they only see the DPS meter, not anything else.
The WoW community are at 90% (and I'm generous here, I could easily say 95% or even more) idiot who watch a video, notice that the MDI players are turning left, and pulled mega pack so they learn that you need to turn left and pull mega pack, without understanding that the MDI players do on average 10k DPS and the affixes on that week were not bolstering or bursting. So if you turn right or if you pull smaller pack because you are a good player and adapt your strategy to the group you have, they start complaining and leave your key ( before leaving WoW, how many key went super well, just for the healer to leave because the tank took a smaller pack then what MDI showed during bursting week...
So no, very few player in WoW are actually able to recognize actual good play, all they see if the DPS meter MDI and world first mythic race, without understanding he decision and the reasoning behind.
LFR is a gold sink for repair costs for bored people who want to kill time by "raiding."
