Finally, someone who understands that finger nail polish doesn't belong on a food surface!! THANK YOU. I have used the porcelain 150 for a while but could not figure out how to make it do the water color effect. I wouldn't have thought of the Vitrea would have solved my conundrum. I volunteer at a farmers market in the "Kids Corner"( it's a 'art' booth) and i have had a TON of people asking me about a SAFER way to do this. Now, because of your creativity, i can do the project with a clear conscious. A HUGE cyber Hug from me and the kids (and parents) from our little farmers market.
+Denise Desadier Yayyyyyy! That makes me so happy!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. You've made my day, Denise! You're doing great things by showing kids to embrace their creativity, thank you for that!
Mattie Harris The paints last forever so they will be good for many more Christmases to come! I've had these mugs for almost three years now and they still look exactly the same. Have fun! Happy gifting!
Bless you for this idea...I have been looking for Christmas gifts when you have virtually NO money. I at least know what one of my 3 sisters are getting...she loves tea...I'm going to make her a set
Thank you for this video! Watched lots of the ones with nail polish and just had a very bad feeling about that ... So glad to see this version! I do have one question: would it be safe to use this on the inside of the mug, where it comes in contact with food/beverages? Thank you
Panda Panakal Oooooh. That is a GOOD question! I am not totally sure... I would *think* it would be okay since it would be okay to eat off of a plate with the same paint... But I wouldn't microwave anything in it if it's a situation where the food/liquid would touch the paint... Does that make sense?
My girlfriend and I are SO happy we came across your video! However, we see you're using the Pebeo Vitrea 160 but we want to know what kind of finish it is? Is it the glossy? Frosted? Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Hello, I have a question I hope you can/will answer. I want to do this but first put adhesive vinyl under it so that I can paint and then remove the vinyl to have the words show through in white. Does the ink pretty well dry before you put it in the oven? I wouldn't want to put the mug with the vinyl still on it in the oven, but also don't want the ink to smudge when I remove the vinyl. thanks!
Hi! Where I live I can't get Pebeo's Vitrea. What would happen if I used ceramic paint for my mugs? Have you ever tried it? If I used whatever medium the instructions say to use in order to create the marble effect, do you think it would work just like alcohol does with Vitrea? Thanks!
Yeah, I think that would work. I would use whatever the instructions say to use as a cleanup method, though. That's why I used alcohol for the vitrea to create the marbled effect. I think there is a transparent medium available that you could use as well. Just don't mix it up all the way. I'd love to see when you're done! :)
Grace Nelson Try it! I used alcohol because it kinda repels the paint and intensifies the watercolor effect. Water could make it cloudy but I've never tried it. I'd love to hear how it goes!
Hi there, this is amazing. what i like is that it can last very long. But the problem is that my oven cannot go up to that high temperature, is baking it necessary to bake? or is there a way that i can bake longer with a lower temperature?? really looking forward to ur reply, thx ^^
mish C According to the instructions, you have to bake at 325 in order to set the paint and make it permanent. I'm not sure that baking longer at a lower temperature would set the paint. From what I understand, at 325, the original glaze on the mug becomes porous and allows the paint to sink in. Then, when it's cool, it's set into the original glaze. If you try it at a lower temp and have success I'd love to hear about it! Good luck!
No need to apply anything. When you bake the mug, the clear glaze that's already on it soaks up the glass/ceramic paint. So when it dries, it's sealed in that factory glaze. I've had these mugs for over two years and they look exactly the same as they did on day one. Just make sure you use glass or ceramic paint meant for baking.
can you use china mugs in the oven? What is the material of these mugs on the video? Also im worried about putting the mug in the oven when it has rubbing alcohol! im just worried something will explode!
I have never tried actual China in the oven, so I am not sure. The mugs in the video are ceramic. The rubbing alcohol evaporates very quickly - this is actually part of how the watercolor effect is achieved. I've made these several times using this method and never had a problem. Just make sure you are using glass or ceramic paint.
What does the container say to use for clean-up of the product? I'd try whatever that is. The glass paint I use says to clean up using alcohol, so that's how I found out that this would work this way.
+Hearts and Sharts it doesn't say anything about how to rub it off but using rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad manages to wipe it off. However, it does not repel at all when dropped onto the paint.
+Hannah Whitaker Hmm. Try diluting the paint in a separate container with the alcohol and then try it on the mug. I think I had to thin mine a little bit since it was so thick.
La Chica Desastre After it's baked in the oven and the colors are set, you can put it in the microwave and in the dishwasher. I've had mine for a few years now and they look good as new. (and I'm a coffee reheater) :)
Another brand, maybe but if you want your mug to be dishwasher safe, non-toxic, non-flammable and long lasting - then you have to use the right paint. Bake-able glass or ceramic paint.
Missy Murray Sharpies are definitely safer than nail polish but they don't last very long. I've had these mugs for three years now and they look the exact same. I did another video using paint pens and tested several kinds of pens on a mug and used it for a while to see what would last. www.heartsandsharts.com/easy-diy-mothers-day-mug/ It will "work", but it won't last.
Aastha Gupta Rubbing Alcohol evaporates at room temperature in about 7 minutes. If you follow the instructions to wait 24 hours to bake the mugs, you're totally safe. Thanks, though.
I've only tried the Vitrea for this, but I think as long as it's permanent glass paint that you bake, it should be fine. I have used the sharpie paint pens for other mugs and they didn't do well. A year later they are all chipping.
+Joana Brito I haven't. I'm sure that would work, though. This brand is awesome. I've used their paint pens (after trying the sharpie) and they did great.
+Hearts and Sharts I know! I love this brand as well I have the outliner tube but as the brand came to my country later on I have to use this first. If it works with my brand I'll let you know. ;)

Please come back! I just watched all your videos all of them have giving me my creative spark again. Thank you
This video was really helpful, im glad i saw this video before making the mug with nail polish
i finally found a video showing me this without nail polish.thank you thank you thank you
Thank you for sharing the pros and cons on the nail polish use. You may have just saved my microwave.
bless you! I plan on making these for my family, since I don't have a lot of money to spend this Christmas. Great thing they all love coffee haha
Mattie Harris The paints last forever so they will be good for many more Christmases to come! I've had these mugs for almost three years now and they still look exactly the same. Have fun! Happy gifting!
I am in LOVE with that design! SO fabulous
+Mommyzoid Thank you!!!
I love you, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for this video, I never thought I could have dine it with glass paint

This is amazing!! I'm so glad I saw this before I used nail polish!
Yayyy!!!
i love this! thanks so much for the education!

I love the colors that you used! Which ones are they? Thanks!
Just to clarify 325F oven temp is 170c or 150 fan oven, that is a low temp NOT high as some think.
My girlfriend and I are SO happy we came across your video! However, we see you're using the Pebeo Vitrea 160 but we want to know what kind of finish it is? Is it the glossy? Frosted? Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Michael Paglicci thanks!! it's glossy, I believe.
What if you put a sealer over the nailpolish
But I would like to know if I can do the water technique. Will the paint dissolve in the water if I just pour it

Alicia C The paint has to sit at room temp for 24 hours, it's dry when it goes in the oven. I'd love to see how it turns out!
Thanks I forgot about that step. That should work. I'll post a pic if it turns out. :)
or do you know of any other water based, non-flammable, dish washer safe glass paints?
Thank you so much for this video! I would like to ask one question, what is the brand of the paint you used and where you can find it?
Felicity Edwards It's Vitrea by Pebeo. I got mine on Amazon. :)

i have used nail polish n wenever i pour hot tea or coffee i found the smell of nail polish while drinking...what more can i ?
Ha! I am an alcohol ink artist! If I used this paint I would not have to resin my mugs! No more big mess and expensive resin!
how to bake with microwave oven. how much time to preheat it. I can't set temperature here!
You said you need to use a ceramic mug but can you use a porcelain mug????

thanks for posting this! But I'm not sure if I should put acrylic sealer on it after baking? Or the baking process is to make the colour lasts longer?

can i use poster watercolor?
hi, i have a matrix microwave oven but i don't know how to use it.. pls reply to asap :) and also can i use any different types of watercolor?
You will need glass or ceramic paint and it has onto bake in an oven as shown in the video. You can order the paint on amazon. :)
Can it be like watercolor paint or acrylic?
No. It has to be glass or ceramic paint in order for it to last and not wash off and be microwaveable.
where can you get this paint without ordering online?

Hello, the porcelain paint I'm using won't be repelled by the rubbing alcohol at all, it just makes it very runny, what can I do to make it work?

+Hearts and Sharts Thank you, I have tried that, but I'll buy some glass paint today and see if that changes anything. It could be my technique!
+Hannah Whitaker Good luck! Let me know how it works out!
the thing is.... i don't have an oven, such a dismay for me
looks beautiful...but at the end I think it turned brown :/
Please reply
Can I use nail polish remover instead of rubbing alcohol?
I'm not sure, try it! Just don't use nail polish , use glass or ceramic paint.
+Hearts and Sharts alright :) Thank you very much. ❤
did the nail polish remover work? rubbing alcohol is extremely expensive where i live
Can I use a different paint?
Facundo Abigail As long as it's glass or ceramic paint. I wouldn't use anything else.

Nail polish

What if i dont have Alchohol ... Any perfume can work?, Please reply... Can i use Glass colour as well?
Xainn nn I don't think I'd use anything other than rubbing alcohol.
Thank you so much for replying. God bless u
can you put this mug in the microwave?????

rubbing alcohol is flammable too therefore not microwave safe

Nail polish is NOT flammable after it’s dry.
mistifeyed It's also not permanent. If it doesn't last, it's not the best choice anyway. Especially for a gift.
