I think it's kind of difficult to be scary when you're just under constant assault. It makes it really difficult to build up tension.
If you're in a constant state of anything you acclimate really quickly. One of humans strongest abilities is our almost super human ability to adapt to anything that doesn't out right kill us if exposed to it enough.
i wish it would be toned down with the amount of mobs spawn the second the sun starts setting 😭😭 on creative about 10 creepers are around me while building at a time after being in the same area for longer than 10 minutes

This modpack is the ultimate pinnacle of what a 13 year old creepypasta fan would think is considered horror.
what I hate is just the sanity mechanic. I can understand losing your mind if constantly getting hurt. But I know very few butchers or hunters that have lost their mind and started hallucinating.
Funnily enough the game it is likely based on, Don’t Starve (which has a way more fleshed out Sanity mechanic), doesn’t even have the whole “killing animals loses sanity” thing
I turned the sanity off and turned keep inventory on and I’ve been having a much better time. The body mod and the sanity mod make it basically unplayable. The scarcity of food also makes it obnoxious when you first start the game as you run out of sanity so fast from hunger and then have no instruction on wtf to do with a cow carcass and no iron.
Yeah, the sanity mod seems super annoying.
Imagine taking a dip in your pool and suddenly you have schizophrenia

this could be a good modpack, but sadly the developer thinks horror is equal to doing damage to the player and summoning creepers next to them, great vid tho
When you realize the same people who made this trash horror are responsible for one of the best Vanilla++ experience there is(Better Minecraft)

@@Nekoszowa Eh...I play with the modpack, Fabulously Optimized, and add the mods I like into it, I never bothered to play with that Better Minecraft, so it's not as if I'm missing anything anyways. To each their own though.
@@Nekoszowa the more you see their other work the more you come to realize better minecraft might be a fluke.
I think one of the modpack's big flaws is in the writing. The constant "did I just see something?" or "someone's behind me" immediately defuses any of the tension compared to if you just... turned around & saw something. The redundancy demolishes its attempts at establishing atmosphere.
It's a hard thing to balance, but typically a heavier lean into the "show don't tell" mindset suits the genre of first person horror games well - the imagination is often scarier than anything words can evoke.
If those messages weren't as common it'd make a huge difference. One of the scariest experienced I had with Minecraft was playing modpack which had Thaumcraft in it, and when you gain warp you get such messages and spooky effects on screens. I almost jumped from my desk when I got "Something is behinds you..." or "Maybe it's time to stop..." messages while playing at night and mining for resources deep underground. And Thaumcraft isn't even a horror mod.
As Alan Wake said "Steven King once wrote that nightmares exist outside of logic and there's little fun to be had in explanations. They're antithetical to the poetry of fear. In a horror story the victim keeps asking why, but there can be no explanation and there shouldn't be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest and is what we'll remember in the end."
I was watching someone play a single horror mod (instead of like a whole pack) and they got very few notifications throughout it. At one point they just got a notification of “it feels as though something is following me” and that was enough to set them on edge for the next like ten minutes trying to figure out what it was. It’s hard to find the right balance between show and tell because if you only ever show you run the risk of confusing the audience and no one knowing what’s happening at all, which can ruin the scare, but obviously just telling people what’s happening is even worse.

I mean, it’s only in video games where such text makes sense and can be actually scary. The text horror can work, you just need to use it sparingly and effectively.
*Minor spoilers from indie game Mothered (slow burn psychological horror game kinda, highly recommend)*
In Mothered, on the first night after a normal-ish homecoming, when you select the bed to sleep, some text pops up saying, “You can’t sleep with someone in the room.” Only, you don’t see anyone else in the dark room with you. But your character noticed.
I love that moment, it’s small but effective, working with the game’s low graphics, fog and teleporting NPC to just scare you a little.

the scariest part of this mod pack in my option is you killing the dogs for a item you didn't use lol.
also if you want a less horror mod pack but still gives a decent change i recommend permafrost a mod pack where the whole world is in a constant blizzard and you can try to bring life back to the world with magic (and tech mods) and ngl i think your calming/mello style of video would suit it

the only thing that annoyed the hell out of me in that modpack when i tried it was the creepers blowing up whenever they felt like it, not even if they were close to you.
After some digging, I found out why: if creepers can’t reach you but know you’re there, they blow up near torches or to blocks to get to you. It’s very annoying!

@@midnafan120 it’s part of the mob enhancement mod, it does a lot of things but the big one is making creepers 100x more annoying

@@Acrysalis pair it with creeper heal and it's much better. After a short time the ground starts repairing itself one block at a time letting other mobs get to you
My favorite part of the oack is the 30+ enemies that don't burn or despawn during the day as well as constantly knowing where you spawn

Like, there are some cool things. But I'd never say it was really all that scary. Whenever it manages it is when it chills tf out and a single mod gets to shine. Only really solid experience I had with it was early on there was some sorta From the Fog style person watching me deal with the aftermath of like 20 creepers on my first night. It just stood on a hill and acted weird. Just different enough from the From the Fog herobrine to be unnerving. It like, crouch spammed and waved and watched me struggle. Was a great moment.
At no point did the modpack ever reach the quality of that single moment before I just lost interest. Other than that ONE THING, it was just a frustrating vaguely horror themed difficulty mod.

I'm having such a different experience on my side lmao, I'm in a snow biome with a few villages spotted around in the area while I'm living on the top of a mountain. I haven't come across any battle towers or a bunch of enemies while exploring, just many unsettling things.
So the explosions are creepers literally throwing themselves at you and exploding on impact. It's an option you can disable in the config thankfully.
I could see actual children getting uneasy playing it, but not much else. at the end of the day minecraft, roblox and the like are inherently a bit goofy via the block structure alone. even tossing in jumps here and there don't solve the root and at a certain point a player would just expect them.
I saw a neat phasmophobia build (I think for MC) but like.. it had zero scare value of the actual game. really cool mechanics, background audio, items, interactions, their own spin on all the ghosts etc. but it's still just goofy ahh blocks. it very quickly loses any and all tension it tries to build.
also shoutout to that phasmo mod for MC, whoever made it put in a TON of work and it looks fun to play. just not, yanno, spooky despite them nailing the atmosphere and ambience with what they had to work with.
I started this pack and spawned in a desert. I barely managed to set up a base in time and it was actually kind of fun with the gameplay loop.
Then it got really boring and frustrating after that

I actually kind of like this modpack for a bunch of reasons. I'm cool with the vibe it's going for, even if it's just harder minecraft than it is horror and the fog doesn't bother me, but there are features that absolutely need some ironing out if the modpack is to reach its full potential. Infected Vindicators being over powered, Zenyr Ingot mobs being janky ig and having ridiculous spawnrates in the nether, the crazy bad/good loot in some structures, some structures spawning all goofy, adventurer maps breaking your world, etc.
I don't know how that would work though, I assume it would be up to the individual mod authors to tweak all of these things? or the author of fear nightfall could mess with some adjustable settings maybe, or just altogether exclude some mods that take away more than they provide.
Lastly, I think this modpack needs to advertise better how much harder it is than vanilla, and not just scary. If you're looking to hop into fear nightfall, consider that Ashlox's video and deathcount are very realistic as to what you might expect, crawling ("c" by default) is your best friend and make backups of your world often as you would with any minecraft world.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm having a much better experience playing this with my buddies, the dark environment and herobrine popping up once in a while definitely does stuff

Honestly this mod pack would make me throw together my own mod pack. Honestly there’s so many dwellers and luckily there’s people combating the dweller trend by making legit good monsters with proper Ai but still I don’t play this mod pack because it doesn’t seem scary to me. I’ll watch others play it though

How do you lower the fog? I have been playing this modpack and can't see ANYTHING, and for some reason I can't figure out how to lower the fog..

What you need to try is The data pack "From the Fog" (and I don't mean the one with all the dwellers he can do that after) it adds the old creepy pasta Herobrine into your game, but he doesn't straight out attack you. He basically haunts you it can actually be pretty unnerving. I highly suggest giving it a try if you ever get the chance.
I mean, me and my nephew played it, but after awhile it was just normal and didn't scare us or unnerve us just gave us a laugh.

minecraft doesnt have very good horror modpacks, theres only one modpack that genuinely creeped me out and it's psx minecraft, i dont wanna spoil it but if you wanna revisit spooky mc, i'd heavily recommend that (along with anyone else reading this)

All the people here are bashing the modpack but to be honest, this is actually just one of the best horror modpacks there is. The horror modpacks are generally just pretty bad as 90% of mod makers have no idea what makes something actually scary and they just add a bunch of dweller variations that all equally suck. So far this is unfortunately peak and imo it's pretty fun and enjoyable anyways.

The idea of this mod sounds nice but it looks soooo unbalanced. Like kaizo mario levels of unfair. Which I assume is to be expected with the latter, not the former.
This modpack is just..eh, feels too fast-paced and loud for horror.

You disabled the game music which is half of the atmosphere experience for all video games and didn't try to keep your sanity up in the first 10 minutes of the video. Am I missing something? Have you tried RLCraft? Are you going to call that a bad game because it is difficult and "unbalanced?"

people are right on how the difficulty makes this mod more annoying than "scary" because while playing i found out the best base was to just build a platform above ocean and play as safe as possible which takes away all the tension as you are more focused on your safety and what could lurk around
