Steve is a great teacher. I’ve had great success with his guitarzoom program until I developed liver cancer…then he allowed me to leave his program with a complete refund and a wish for good health. The surgery was a success and I’m back watching and learning to play guitar. Thanks Steve. And he’s hella good looking, especially when he’s teaching!
Notes: Leg/guitar elevated a bit Neck out forward a little bit - gives room to work and allows arm to tuck in at elbow Elbow tucked in towards ribs - rotates your hand and fingers towards the side - avoids knuckles - better edge Thumb behind the index finger Keep fingers close to the frets Finesse over force Don't chase perfection 5th string barre chords - first string muted = fine Style and body of the guitar can make a difference - lower action - thinner gauge (Acoustic) Martin Flexible Core SP strings - 11s (Electric) GHS Boomers Another great lesson! 😁
Steve, you are a phenomenal teacher, and I can only imagine the number of people you have tremendously helped in their musical journey! You have helped me tremendously, and I just love your whole approach to teaching! I think you must learn similarly to how I do because your approach resonates directly with me and has been probably the most helpful in my life! Thanks again brother! Oh yeah, it seems like you may have lost some weight, I hope and pray you are well! God bless you!
Hey, Steve. I just want to say that your encouragement here really helped me push through and keep going with this. When you shared that you had frustration early on and that you were thinking about giving up (and maybe not continuing with guitar) but then pushed through, that was a big help to me. Also the idea to 'give yourself a break.' I have been doing a little bit of this each day & a lot of them are terrible, but I can also tell it's getting closer. THANK YOU. Actually feeling like this is possible & excited that one day I might be able to do it ...

I've struggled for a long time with barre chords. I could do them, but not cleanly enough fast enough for them to be functionally useable. The strings you recommended here have been the absolute difference maker for me -- all this time I thought the problem was me, while it was my gear not being right for me. Thank you -- I can't even begin to tell you how satisfying it was to pick up my guitar, fret a barre chord, and have it feel almost effortless for the first time. I feel like so many doors have been opened on my playing potential just from this one small change. Thanks again.
This video did the trick for me. I followed the instructions and played a clean F right away. I've been working on barre chords for a while and struggling quite a bit. Thank you
I was in the same boat about quitting playing then i watched this and adjusted and now i can play most bar cords just keep working i was working for about a week before i got the hang of it.

I would suggest that everyone TRY placing the guitar in the 'Classical' position ....i.e. on the LEFT leg. I found that playing barre chords was immensely easier with little to no pain except perhaps at the 12th fret. I started to play the guitar in this position always, as it does not affect playing the normal open chords at all. Try it!

I played guitar for years and years resting the guitar on my right leg. Long story short, after I started playing more regularly, I developed a pretty serious case of tendonitis in my left forearm. I had to stop playing for a while because of it. After the pain started to go away, I tried playing normally, and the tendonitis started coming back. Finally, I decided to try resting my guitar (and bass) on my left leg... and the tendonitis has not come back yet. Turns out, with my guitar on my right leg, I was putting my left arm in an awkward position, and I didn't even realize it. Shifting my guitar to my left leg helped me play much more comfortably. Just wanted to share. :-) -- Mike
That does work, until you have to stand to play. So when it comes to something I find difficult (like barre chords - super small hands), I suck it up, strap on the guitar, stand up and practice. If I can play it while sitting, then show up to play and have to stand and then struggle with something I thought I had down, well, not so good.

Excellent advice! In my 6 month of learning and I was so surprised that things I wished I knew from the beginning, I am learning today, i.e. holding, elbow placement, finger placement. Should have day 1! I started with learning basic open chords, the main ones. Practiced for 4 weeks until knew them, struggling and practicing hours a day before I got it, not perfect but Okay. Thanks and will watch several of your videos.

Excellent video. Adjusting the position of my guitar and my elbow made a huge difference and helped me play the chords more easily. Also, using the side of my finger really helped me, too. You are a wonderful teacher.

@@stinemusiclessons I’m still needed more time to learn guitar, so I think it’s still early for it. I’m a beginner student , who desire to make more easy the chords using . 🙏 thanks
JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON, ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 JUST ANOTHER GREAT LESSON STEVE...I AM FOREVER SHOWING MY STUDENTS THAT,”I CANNOT PLAY PROPER WITH MY WRIST WAY BACK,LIKE YOU TEACH,YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR FRETTING HAND(arm) LOOSE AND ACCESSIBLE??? “”THE THINGS YOU MISS OUT ON WHEN LEARNING BY EAR”” TOP LEFT
Wow , thanks for the info on the first finger placement, I'd been trying to perfectly get it on its side and perfect distance for each finger from the fret... probably why the outside of my wrist hurts/ getting arthritis.
Thanks Steve. You are a good teacher. Dedinitely. Right now, I have a stabilizer wrapped around my left rist and thumb, because I managed to do all the wrong things and got a thumb tendonitis. But the intersting part is that I used to be able to play barre chords :-) and was «corrected» by someone who claimed to know. I suppose picking your teacher is also important in learning to play the guitar (or learning anything, really).
Ouch! Make sure to follow your doctor's instructions, and don't put any pressure on those tendons, if you can avoid it. Sometimes, all you can do with injuries like that is to let them heal. So for now, just rest and follow your doctor's instructions. (Can't stress that enough. :-) ) When you start to play again, make sure to stretch properly every time you play. Here's some exercises Steve recommends that you should check out: ruclips.net/video/qYJZsk3cNLc/видео.html Regarding the person who "corrected" you with your barre chord technique, I'm sure they meant to help. It's possible that whatever they're doing works for them just fine, because of the size, shape, and flexibility of their hands, and so on... but for whatever reason, it didn't work for you the same way. As Steve always says, stay positive, and try to avoid doing the things that caused the tendonitis. For me personally, I struggled with pretty severe tendonitis a few years ago. I was playing bass in a 2-piece band, and after a few months of long practice sessions and playing shows semi-regularly on electric bass, then going home and playing acoustic for fun, my left (fretting hand) elbow felt like it was going to snap. And I just had to quit for a while to recover. After the pain went away - I totally quit playing for at least a couple of weeks - when I started to play again, the pain started coming back. So, I paid close attention to when and why I started feeling strain in my tendons. I figured out that the way I was holding my guitar was causing my left hand to be put in an awkward position. And when I put my left hand in an awkward position, then tightened my tendons... that was what was causing my tendonitis. I decided to try something. Instead of resting my guitar (or bass) on my right thigh when I played, I moved it over to my left thigh. Doing this pushed my left arm out further away from my body, and doing that gave my left arm more freedom to move without getting into an awkward position. And I've been playing since then with no problems. All it took was moving my guitar from my right thigh to my left thigh. So, when you start to play again, pay close attention to how your hand feels. You might be able to find a simple change that can help avoid problems in the future. Hope this helps! :-) Just wanted to let you know, if you enjoy Steve’s RUclips videos, you should definitely check out the new GuitarZoom Premium Membership → guitarzoom.com/join Members get unlimited streaming of more than 40 of Steve’s best guitar courses, like CAGED Made Simple, Music Theory Made Easy, Play Guitar For Life, Blues Guitar, Rock Licks, Acoustic Guitar, and many more. Thank you very much for your barre chord tips !!! :) I am a beginner guitarist who is trying to get better who would appreciate a gentle introduction to barre chords ! Even though I can’t do full 6 string barre chords because of my rather short small fingers and small hands and short arms I still want to try out partial barre chords/mini barre chords that involve barring only the first 2 - 4 strings in the guitar on the same fret with my finger ! Making things a lot easier for me ! Thanks heaps for your help ! Very much appreciated ! :) I shall keep these tips in mind when I am actually practicing. And to get further professional advice on barre chords and other things I shall pay for professional guitar lessons :) from mr Ryan McDonald kiwi from NEW ZEALAND :)

Wow thank you so much for these tips! Actually playing the e-guitar and was looking for a good video on barre chords (been trying for 3 months already and it doesn't work and thinking about quitting) and came across this video of yours. Gained motivation again and will try out your tips tomorrow morning! I didn't know that the strings (your last tip) make such a huge difference. What strings do you recommend for e-guitars?? You're awesome!
Hi Steve, I'm learning to play and found you as the best RUclips teacher so thank you very much. I bought a Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar, does every brand new acoustic guitar needs to set-up first? Like calibrating the thrust and the bridge to lower the action?(saw some DIY videos) Because no matter how hard I press some strings especially those near the nut, it doesn't sound well, not sure if because I'm new or if setting up brand new guitar to play easier is really necessary. Thank you!
that was so helpful. my biggest problem is my short body that the guitar digs into my right breast which is a mastectomy reconstructed implant and prevents me from adding pressure trying to play barre chords. any tips? i so avoid barre chords but i really want to play them

Just thought I'd tell ya that I tried to do what you were teaching in this video and it worked! I hit that barre chord the first time with no muted strings!:) Thanks man!:))
Thank you You are really a good teacher for us beginners So I may ask, are the barre chords played with say open chords progression for example if I play G chord progression how do barre chords come in Thanks
Thanks for the kind words, Jasper! To answer your question, barre chords work the same way as open chords in chord progressions. Just find the root note for the chord you're looking for, and play the barre chord. For example, to play a G - C - D chord progression, you can play G as a 6th string barre chord, like this: e - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - B - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - G - - - - - 4- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - D - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - E - - - - - 3- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ...then play C and D as 5th string barre chords: e - - - - -x- - - - - - x- - - - - - - - - - - B - - - - -5- - - - - -7 - - - - - - - - - - - G - - - - -5 - - - - - 7- - - - - - - - - - - D - - - - -5- - - - - -7- - - - - - - - - - - A - - - - -3 - - - - - 5- - - - - - - - - - - E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hope this helps! Steve, I tend to miss your live shows...I'm in Malta....time zones! I've got huge hands....totally huge. You can see them from space :). Not fat, just big. Had an issue with buzzing on e when barring the 3 strings with ring finger in the a shape barre chord. Eventually figured out that by pushing my index finger further up, it lifted the bend on my ring finger enough to stop the buzzing. I'm still slow transitioning between barre chords etc but they sound way better. Do you think that playing songs with barre chords in is a good and more enjoyable way to practice?
This is how I play any guitar while seated. Definitely mostly prevalent in the classically trained crowd, but this is ultimately a preference thing for me, purely for the sake of comfort and natural hand positioning, regardless of how closely it might translate to an upright stance. This all is not to be confused with poor posture and technique, of course, which he covers quite well as per usual.
Wow thank you so much for the strings recommendation I am really thinking about the string that is worth playing and buying ... and its perfect for my martin dx1...
Just wondering Steve .. when you say you have small hands .. can you play an octave comfortably on a piano? How about a ninth? I have pretty small hands .. I can somewhat play an octave comfortably on the piano (as long as its not lightning fast runs), and can just barely hit a ninth that is pretty much useless. I am actually a piano/organ/synth player (about 40 years now, worked 20 of those, of mediocre ability), but have a few Strats and a very old Martin D-28 laying around here .. and have decided to get serious about playing them, so I'm looking for a teacher with similar hand size that can help me with some of the challenges that come with small hands. Appreciate the free videos man 👍
Why does my joint at the base of my left pointer finger of my fretting hand get too painful to play after a week or so? No breaks, no soft tissue damage and have even taken a year off, tried rehab exercises (not guitar-specific). I stretch, warm-up, move between lead, barres, opens, etc. Rheumatologists and others say they don’t know-but they have no guitar experience/knowledge. Any recommendations? I own and run a studio, so I have a lot of guitars to move between, but I mostly use a PRS electric to make it easier on my left hand. It hurts on the outside- between my pointer and thumb on the big pointer knuckle.
Sir I have started playing when I was 17 years old and now i'm already 20. So my question is how long will it take for me to play my guitar fluently and without slipping onto different strings. And do we really need to know all the theory in order to solo soulfully cause I have a friend who just throw some big boys licks by just playing a major scale Plzzz do reply Sir 😻😻😻
Unbelievable.... I just had these exact strings put on my acustic and they are sooo much smoother .. I'm not sure how you always know what I'm doing but it's starting to freak me out !! Lol
I was having most difficulties playing the minor chords cause I couldn't bar the G string well enough with my index finger, raising my index finger a bit so the palm of my hand is closer to the neck helps a lot as I was trying to bar the G string with a little fold in my finger where the joint is

That's awesome news, Lisa! I will pass it on to Steve. :-)
-- Mike from GuitarZoom
Hey Lisa!
So glad to hear the surgery was a success!!
Stay strong 🙏
Steve
Guitar position, yes.🎸
Notes:
Leg/guitar elevated a bit
Neck out forward a little bit - gives room to work and allows arm to tuck in at elbow
Elbow tucked in towards ribs - rotates your hand and fingers towards the side - avoids knuckles - better edge
Thumb behind the index finger
Keep fingers close to the frets
Finesse over force
Don't chase perfection
5th string barre chords - first string muted = fine
Style and body of the guitar can make a difference - lower action - thinner gauge
(Acoustic) Martin Flexible Core SP strings - 11s
(Electric) GHS Boomers
Another great lesson! 😁
Yes. You teach very clear and understandable. Keep it up. Thank you.
Thanks Steve Stine!!!
That's awesome to hear, Aaron! :-)

Steve i love yOur waY oF delivering lesson, nOw my concept were gOod enough.. All thank to yours
Yes same here he teaches so good yaar
You’re awesome dude. Such a chill and down to earth guy. Appreciate the time you take to do these
Thanks for the kind words! :-)

Try it!
Great suggestion, Barry!

Thanks Steve! I'm on those chords now and working thru them. Every little bit helps. Love your channel and is more then helpful!!!!
Awesome, Fabian! Thanks for watching, thanks for the kind words, and thanks for sharing your progress! :-)

Very good lesson
Thank you! 😃
Some really helpful things relating to playing barre chords.Right on.Thank's Steve.
Excellent video. Adjusting the position of my guitar and my elbow made a huge difference and helped me play the chords more easily. Also, using the side of my finger really helped me, too. You are a wonderful teacher.
Thank you so much!
I started out on classical guitar with medium tension nylon strings and went to a harder tension nylon strings and now I can do barre chords on steel strings. Perseverance!
Hi from UK, thanks for the tips, what a difference.
Great tips as I struggle w/those chords and tend to shy away from songs that have them. Now I will go back and try them again.😉
Awesome, Joyous One! Thanks for watching, and thanks for sharing!

I’m still needed more time to learn guitar, so I think it’s still early for it. I’m a beginner student , who desire to make more easy the chords using .
🙏 thanks
JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON, ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 JUST ANOTHER GREAT LESSON STEVE...I AM FOREVER SHOWING MY
STUDENTS THAT,”I CANNOT PLAY PROPER WITH MY WRIST WAY BACK,LIKE YOU TEACH,YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR FRETTING
HAND(arm) LOOSE AND ACCESSIBLE??? “”THE THINGS YOU MISS OUT ON WHEN LEARNING BY EAR”” TOP LEFT
Wow , thanks for the info on the first finger placement, I'd been trying to perfectly get it on its side and perfect distance for each finger from the fret... probably why the outside of my wrist hurts/ getting arthritis.
It sounds perfect ❤️
Paul Reed Smith 😘 guitar 🎸🎸🎸🎸
I Love 💕 look and sound of this one.
When you start to play again, make sure to stretch properly every time you play. Here's some exercises Steve recommends that you should check out:
ruclips.net/video/qYJZsk3cNLc/видео.html
Regarding the person who "corrected" you with your barre chord technique, I'm sure they meant to help.

Wow such wonderful help he is god bless you.

Perfect background 👌 family ❤️ I just love Ur lessons sir n I m struggling with barre chords alot I think I can never play it perfectly but now uh r my only hope let's see if now I m able to make it
Wow thank you so much for these tips!
Try 16 cats 😂
Great video, 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Love your lessons
Excellent lesson
Hi Steve, I'm learning to play and found you as the best RUclips teacher so thank you very much. I bought a Yamaha F310 acoustic guitar, does every brand new acoustic guitar needs to set-up first? Like calibrating the thrust and the bridge to lower the action?(saw some DIY videos) Because no matter how hard I press some strings especially those near the nut, it doesn't sound well, not sure if because I'm new or if setting up brand new guitar to play easier is really necessary. Thank you!
that was so helpful. my biggest problem is my short body that the guitar digs into my right breast which is a mastectomy reconstructed implant and prevents me from adding pressure trying to play barre chords. any tips? i so avoid barre chords but i really want to play them
You are awesome sir...your videos help me a lot..Thank you sir🙏😊

Damn...work got in the way. Watching after. Thanks
Hello from Arlington Tx.
Thanks Steve!
You are welcome!
Just thought I'd tell ya that I tried to do what you were teaching in this video and it worked! I hit that barre chord the first time with no muted strings!:) Thanks man!:))
Thank you
You are really a good teacher for us beginners
So I may ask, are the barre chords played with say open chords progression for example if I play G chord progression how do barre chords come in
Thanks
Thanks for the kind words, Jasper! To answer your question, barre chords work the same way as open chords in chord progressions. Just find the root note for the chord you're looking for, and play the barre chord.
For example, to play a G - C - D chord progression, you can play G as a 6th string barre chord, like this:
e - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
B - - - - - 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
G - - - - - 4- -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
D - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
A - - - - - 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
E - - - - - 3- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
...then play C and D as 5th string barre chords:
e - - - - -x- - - - - - x- - - - - - - - - - -
B - - - - -5- - - - - -7 - - - - - - - - - - -
G - - - - -5 - - - - - 7- - - - - - - - - - -
D - - - - -5- - - - - -7- - - - - - - - - - -
A - - - - -3 - - - - - 5- - - - - - - - - - -
E - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hope this helps! :-)

Nice guitar I bought the a30e and I'm waiting on the new a50e. They sound and play great
I've been trying too play barre chords for 3 yrs.
Nice lesson, best regards from germany
Steve, I tend to miss your live shows...I'm in Malta....time zones! I've got huge hands....totally huge. You can see them from space :). Not fat, just big. Had an issue with buzzing on e when barring the 3 strings with ring finger in the a shape barre chord. Eventually figured out that by pushing my index finger further up, it lifted the bend on my ring finger enough to stop the buzzing. I'm still slow transitioning between barre chords etc but they sound way better. Do you think that playing songs with barre chords in is a good and more enjoyable way to practice?
What do you think about people saying put it on your left knee only because if you stand up with a strap that's the same position.
I was late😣. Thank you for your lessons Steve
Sir I have started playing when I was 17 years old and now i'm already 20. So my question is how long will it take for me to play my guitar fluently and without slipping onto different strings. And do we really need to know all the theory in order to solo soulfully cause I have a friend who just throw some big boys licks by just playing a major scale
Plzzz do reply Sir 😻😻😻
Great wisdom
Thank you
Love your stuff bud
Unbelievable.... I just had these exact strings put on my acustic and they are sooo much smoother .. I'm not sure how you always know what I'm doing but it's starting to freak me out !! Lol
Hi Steve hope this lesson works for me. Chas from the UK
I wish I had more time in my life for these lessons
I was having most difficulties playing the minor chords cause I couldn't bar the G string well enough with my index finger, raising my index finger a bit so the palm of my hand is closer to the neck helps a lot as I was trying to bar the G string with a little fold in my finger where the joint is
Thanks for sharing that tip, Kevin! I know there are other guitarists out there who might benefit from it. :-)
