When you consider that carrying wasn't allowed at all in their era, Mr. Cousy was also a kind of Kyrie of his day, in terms of dribbling. He would split defenders and do what was then some of the fanciest basketball-handling around.

I am 80 and have watched and enjoyed the NBA since the early 1950s. Cousy was my favorite player during his career. He was a great player who changed the game forever with his exciting style of play.
I remember reading that Cousy practiced widening his field of vision and had incredible peripheral vision as a result.
He would be just as good today. Imo.

This was a good portion of why they won so many championships. It looks like they were a great passing team, much like the 1986 Celtics. A few good shooters, who can all pass well, and a defensive giant, like Russell, plus good ball handling, and team first mentality, and you have got IT.

    • @michaelcorenzwit8118

Cousy could have scored more points but he preferred to pass to a teammate who was in a better position to score. He had an accurate one hand shot and could drive to the basket. He could shoot, pass and bribble with either hand. Truly a great one.

I'm glad RUclips exists so that people can see players like Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and others of an earlier NBA. Yes, those players in their prime would be stars in any generation. The proof is in watching them play.

Cousy was a breakthrough player. Comparing him to today's players misses the point. It's a bit like saying some company rep who rents an hour from the Hubble telescope is a greater astronomer than Galileo. The rep knows things Galileo never knew. But that's because he's accessing a base of knowledge in which Galileo plays a huge role. The rep contributes nothing in comparison to the advances Galileo introduced.
    Cousy is Galileo.

People are laughing at the guy who falls over at 0:33, but it wasn't that bad of a play on his part. Obviously he got crossed and fell over, which is embarrassing, but he was playing Cousy to go back, which he faked like he was going to, and was going to where he thought the ball would be to make a steal and couldn't recover and get back. He was also playing in Converse All-Stars, which aren't the best shoes for quick movement and were probably part of the reason.
