This is based on the classic dystopian novel Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley It warns of the dangers of giving the State control over new and powerful technologies and mankind's acceptance of control as a trade of for security and comfort - written nearly 100 years ago
Thrilled to see you discover Kalandra! They've officially taken over from Aurora at the top of my most underappreciated artist list. Not saying they're better, but Aurora has gotten fairly popular, while Kalandra is still very much unknown. They are so, so good, and the only thing missing is exposure.
Speaking of Aurora, I couldn't help but notice that you were describing Katrine with the same terms (soothing, ethereal, etc.) you've used to describe Aurora. I hate when people pit them against each other like it's a competition. Both ladies are awesome. They do share some similarities, including very expressive performances, but they deserve to be appreciated on their own merits, without knocking the other.
If you think this was good, wait until you see "Slow Motion" from Gildehallen! I've seen it many times, and I'm still blown away every time.
Slow Motion from this same show is unbelievably good. Absolutely love Kalandra. Katrine's voice is incredible and the songwriting is deep and meaningful. They have a really distinctive sound that can be soft and ethereal or powerful with a hard edge. One of my favorite new bands of the past few years. This song is inspired by a poem based on Aldous Huxley's book Brave New World. I take it as a warning about the dangers of propaganda and how the powerful work to divide the masses to keep them powerless. The book is an allegory about the rise of fascism. Glad to see you discover this wonderful band.

I've seen them live twice in the last year. Katrine, Jogeir, Florian and Oskar absolutely nailed everything live, and are just such nice people, always spending time talking to their fans after (and even during) the show. Beautiful music from beautiful people.
Glad you covered Kalandra. Katrine's voice is great, a strong second to Aurora who still remains supreme to my ears but I love her voice.
For me it’s the other way round, Katrine ahead of Aurora.
I had last year the Honor to see them on Wardruna's "Nordic Night" in Gelsenkirchen here in Germany. Live is it Amazing to hear her Voice. I hope they have a Big Future. 🫶😌
It's a great song. I prefer the other live version, where she is playing percussion while singing. But this is great also. "Borders" is definitely a great choice also. "The Waiting Game" has one of the best music videos I have ever seen. From this venue you are watching here, I would choose "Slow Motion", a complete delight. Also, I know you have already done "Helvegen" with Wardruna/Aurora, so you should definitely watch Kalandras live cover of that one, cause it is great alternate take on the song.

My favourite Nordic band. Others have mentioned ‘Borders’ and ‘Slow Motion’, which are must listens, but my favourite from them so far is their brilliant cover of Wardruna’s ‘Helvegen’ (sung in Norwegian). I prefer that cover to the Wardruna/Aurora original.

Brave New World is inspired by the 1932 dystopian novel by Aldous Huxley. In this world the inhabitants are trapped by being manipulated by the authorities and denied their freedom. This novel is sometimes compared to George Orwell's 1984. The song is really a call to action to take a stand against the system that has them trapped.
The name of the novel is "Brave New world".
I have been listening to Kalandra lately, most of my favorite music now is from Northern Europe-Finland,Sweden, etc.
Some other good ones like this are Eurielle, Myrkur, and from the Faroe Isles, Eivor.

Since hearing this song back when it was released my impression of this song brave new world was base on the classical literature book from Aldous huxley. And that this song was warning about a possible dystopian future being built for our society. I'm sure this song was released around the first lockdown, where there was a lot of fear of the unknown.
Felt that maybe this was the bands way of processing past present events.

Katrine from Kalandra, Eivør, Aurora, Maria Franz from Heilung and I saved the best for last, Angelina Jordan are who I call the Singing Goddesses of the Northern Wind.
If they all got together and sung I swear you'd see some Carebear sh!t going on! They together could save the world from any darkforce that is unleashed into this realm. No joke. .

It is funny how our associations color our interpretations. You associated "Brave New World" with the colonisation of America and then all the lyrics became about that. I am not sure a Norwegian would make that same association. To me, the association goes to Huxley's "Brave new world" and from there the lyrics become about modern society and the oppression of the individual by technology and government. I think it is more of a "advocate for nature" kind of song, maybe referring to climate change also.
Another masterfully explained description of this wonderful piece. Creativity thankfully still drives some of the world's music whereas sadly US music has become reductive to the almighty dollar appealing all too often to the lowest common denominator of human behavior. I love your channel because you venture to explore the world's music.

Great video! I was wondering if you could react to Lord Huron The Night We Met? That song hits so hard, its somehow peaceful and familiar while also being more than heart breaking, its like it reaches into your saddest most desperate feelings and lays them out to stand before you so you have to look at them and realize them. I love it and i feel like you would give amazing insight! If not of course no worries!
Love the folk sound. Very melancholic vocals, yet beautiful. I wish I could afford to speed up my suggestion of Alffy Rev "Wonderland Indonesia" that I made back in January. I know you will love it.

Great Band, Great lyrics. I do prefer the live version where Katrine, the lead singer does the Drum part though. This one is awesome too. They are such a good band. Next to Aurora, Kalandra is one of my favs. As for this song, I believe I read it was referencing Huxley's book "Brave new World"
