If you have ADHD, DON'T start with your hardest task. If you do, 1 out of the following 3 will happen: you will get paralised for a long time, you will go into procrastination cycle or you will finish it and have no energy to do anything else. What to do instead? Pick 1 of your easiest tasks but not the easiest of all and do it. That win will give you encouragement to go bigger. Now check if you feels ready for the hardest task, if not, get an intermadiary level task and go for the hardest next. Get more courage with the easiest task. Unless you feel super motivated, always get a few wins before going for something big and try to break it down to easier stuff.
Omg i have ADHD! Thank you so much for the tip! When i usually have to do a hard task i avoid the thought of accomplishing it, instead i focus on the timer going off and the reward that fallows (Example, doing math i set my timer for 25 minutes, i do the work but keep my attention in completing the 25 minutes of studying, this prevents me from the paralysis effect)
what do you mean? adhd is a huge problem for those who have it. it ruins my life and makes it impossible to achieve my dreams which leads to me hiding away in my house and becoming depressed and anxious. we need the extra advice that other people don’t so that we can help make our lives better too.

People with ADHD have issues with focus and self regulation including emotional regulation, the brain is also usually unable to work with the idea of long term reaward, so procratination is basically 2nd nature. We (I have ADHD) have issues producing and/or processing dopamine which is the brain chemical that produces that pleasure feeling of accomplishing something and motivating to do it again. So to do the worst task 1st takes a huge effort from someone with ADHD, much more than from a neurotypical and the reaward is unsuficient to keep going if the person is able to finish it. With ADHD the issue isn't just to get started, it's also to keep going because distractions have a bigger hold. But when we start building that motivation with smaller wins, we are usually able to go for the big task just fine. It's like having to cross a bridge to do and finish the task. Neurotypicals might have a couple of planks missing but they jump them and cross the bridge, but the person with ADHD has so many missing planks, they usually need to go to smaller bridges collect planks before going to the big one.

But after this came on my feed i actually wrote out the list and crossed out the things i used my dopamine for. I am taking action becasue of you and not just telling myself. But needs some changes for ADHD What applied to me (an ADHDer) No put downs, no performative masculinity, just affirmations of the importance of hard work, and powerful strategies to get there! :) --- How I adapt it: I need a win early in the morning so, I start with one very easy task before my hard task. For me, recently that's been writing a one item checklist to "make a list" and putting that on my nightstand every night. When I wake up, I have to consciously choose to make today worth something and complete the checklist. I don't put everything I have to do, just 3 or 4 items that would likely fall by the wayside and some steps to get there :)

I have a few reasons why I keep myself motivated to do hard things. There’s a few things that just always keep the wind in my sails. The first one is that I say anytime I have to do something hard or that I don’t want to do, I have the attitude of “but it would be so cool to be able to say I did it” or “it would be such a good story someday”. Sometimes I’m a bad person and my motivation is “well hardly anyone does this. I wanna be better than them”. If it works it works I guess LOL
The amount of editing in your videos is incredible. And you show so well what you say that I have the feeling the content is being stamped into my brain 🧠
I like this overall message but it doesn’t truly consider the limitations of self motivation and purpose without having an expanded sense of being and belonging. The rejection of the father is not only painful and limiting, but it also betrays our intrinsic capacity and desire to form part of a larger life story. We can always create great stories for ourselves regardless of our circumstances, but adverse childhood experiences often turn stories into long monologues we share only with a select few.

That tip with merging the hard tasks with rewards is so true... the only time of day I allow myself to watch TV is when I'm eating turkey and rice (which I usually can't stand since I've eaten it so much) but linking it to the "TV time" almost makes it taste better

I feel sorry for the favorite brother, perhaps not disciplining him is the parent's responsibility and letting him slack off might have planted bad seeds in him, seems both children suffered but differently from this upbringing. One learned to value effort, the other remained comfortable and withered.

Haven’t watched the video yet but it’s been more than a month I _crave_ to study!! I’m now having to tell myself to go out with friends, watch series and read books to chill down but I can’t finish a meal, an episode or a chapter before wanting to go back to study more, which is insane to me. It happened after I started to make a habit out of it after reading you can make a habit oof anything if you do the same thing for more than 22 days or smt, and I just put this on my mind and when I noticed I was loving it. Not even sure if is true, but if it isn’t, placebo is a hell of a drug 😅

Absolutely loved the video. I especially liked the furnace analogy. It got me thinking back to some more Zen and Taoist roots. If we have two furnaces in the cold, one of waste that doesn't last long and one of purpose that's farther away but burns for a big while longer, and we need to stay warm, we of course will choose the 2nd option. But what if we get someone who doesn't need the furnaces at all? What of the person who's used to the cold, even enjoys it? I wonder what they represent? Maybe something akin to a sage, a buddha, a jesus figure? A Nietzschean uber Mensch? It's fascinating.
You really brought a good point about desensitization. This instantly-available world makes most of things less valuable just because of how easy they are to obtain (or, like porn, just seeing without actually experiencing it). I really never thought reducing the amount of exposure would increase the satisfaction level of it, it seems so counter-intuitive. I think most people (including me) are currently in the step two of your definitions-- decluttering. We're aware enough that this distraction sucks, not brave enough to ditch them for better things ahead.

Dude, I made crazy improvements and I want to tell you about them. I organized everything you said for the 5 step plan into 5 pages(on my iPad but it could be paper too): 1. Things I waste my time and dopamine on. A list of stuff I do currently that's just destroying my life. These are things I can see and reflect on as my goal to beat. 2. A perfect environment. I have a room in my house that has barely anything in it besides clothes that I've dedicated now as my work space. It has a plug, a single overhead light, a window, and a pillow for me to sit on since I sit in chairs or lie on beds too much, so I need to adjust my position. Im only allowed to have my phone for researching and my iPad for the actual work in there. 3. I made a legit "Power Bar" that I wrote down times of the day on. In the green above everything else when I wake up I have basic stuff like stretching, brushing teeth, eating 1 thing, drinking something, and a shower. Everything below in the yellow to the orange-red is my tasks for the day, which will mainly be in that room I said earlier(and Im prompting myself to take notes always so I can build records of my thoughts and studies for more retention of what I think I grasped(it's like journaling without the aspect of it feeling like a diary since that feels a bit annoying and almost self-centered to me even if I understand its for my own development). In the red I have end of the day stuff like making a meal, spending family time, and getting ready for tomorrow a little before hygiene and bed. 4. I have a Reward Sheet(like a store). It feels so cool. It's a list of "exchanges" I can do for doing certain things, so while it's the middle of the day and I need to work.. I can decide what reward Im going to want, so Ill do the associated task and after im done, I can redeem it! Literally mentally coding doing a long term investment for short term gratification. And I can only redeem one a day, so I can do any of the 4 I have written down in ANY order so my day feels variated and fresh while still having a routine. I even snuck in a special option where if I do 2 hours of skill practice for anything that interests me or I feel inclined to want that day, I get 1 hour of ANYTHING I want.. so it's a special redemption I get once during the day, and I need to be wise about it because it's very freeing. 5. Probably my least favorite on the list, but still important. I have a "Rest" period where monday through Friday ill follow the energy bar guidelines and reward systems, but Saturday I account and prepare for my next week/future days with any unique tasks I need to adjust my new schedule for(shopping, unique appointments, etc), and Sunday I just need to eat, do laundry, do basic life assessment so I can track what I still need to do + how to get there, and manage my hygiene.. and then I can do whatever I want to relax for that day as my "free" day! This 5 step plan seriously seems like it's going to dramatically shift my life and make me a better person. Im truly going to start tomorrow, but today I'll ease into it and prepare that room. This is the day I finally take hold of my unkept life and stop wasting my time like I've done since I was a little child!!! And I have you to thank for it spoon. I have a very privileged life that I've been self-awaringly taking for granted, and I've been a major hypocrite in elaborating in how I want to fix my life yet I dont do anything about it.. but now I feel a new sense of purpose, like a door finally opened that I have the choice to either walk through or ignore again.. and I will not let it close, I'm going to fix my life finally. Bless you, your family, and everyone else here in similar situations to mine. We're going to be okay thanks to people like Spoon.
I found tracking my time wasted is easier since I think I'm not wasting time until I see my track record. I find something Interesting and say This is cool let me learn more. Over time I can see them as distractions or simple entertainment. So it gives me more of an idea for my personal journey what I'm interested in and what is merely entertainment and worth my time ❤

I have a few reasons why I keep myself motivated to do hard things. There’s a few things that just always keep the wind in my sails. The first one is that I say anytime I have to do something hard or that I don’t want to do, I have the attitude of “but it would be so cool to be able to say I did it” or “it would be such a good story someday”. Sometimes I’m a bad person and my motivation is “well hardly anyone does this. I wanna be better than them”. If it works it works I guess LOL
The amount of editing in your videos is incredible. And you show so well what you say that I have the feeling the content is being stamped into my brain 🧠
I like this overall message but it doesn’t truly consider the limitations of self motivation and purpose without having an expanded sense of being and belonging.
The rejection of the father is not only painful and limiting, but it also betrays our intrinsic capacity and desire to form part of a larger life story.
We can always create great stories for ourselves regardless of our circumstances, but adverse childhood experiences often turn stories into long monologues we share only with a select few.

That tip with merging the hard tasks with rewards is so true... the only time of day I allow myself to watch TV is when I'm eating turkey and rice (which I usually can't stand since I've eaten it so much) but linking it to the "TV time" almost makes it taste better

Excellent, you should explore on your healthy paternal relationship which is something quite rare and people need to know what it's like. I feel sorry for the favorite brother, perhaps not disciplining him is the parent's responsibility and letting him slack off might have planted bad seeds in him, seems both children suffered but differently from this upbringing. One learned to value effort, the other remained comfortable and withered.

Haven’t watched the video yet but it’s been more than a month I _crave_ to study!! I’m now having to tell myself to go out with friends, watch series and read books to chill down but I can’t finish a meal, an episode or a chapter before wanting to go back to study more, which is insane to me. It happened after I started to make a habit out of it after reading you can make a habit oof anything if you do the same thing for more than 22 days or smt, and I just put this on my mind and when I noticed I was loving it. Not even sure if is true, but if it isn’t, placebo is a hell of a drug 😅

Absolutely loved the video. I especially liked the furnace analogy. It got me thinking back to some more Zen and Taoist roots.
If we have two furnaces in the cold, one of waste that doesn't last long and one of purpose that's farther away but burns for a big while longer, and we need to stay warm, we of course will choose the 2nd option.
But what if we get someone who doesn't need the furnaces at all? What of the person who's used to the cold, even enjoys it?
I wonder what they represent? Maybe something akin to a sage, a buddha, a jesus figure? A Nietzschean uber Mensch?

You really brought a good point about desensitization. This instantly-available world makes most of things less valuable just because of how easy they are to obtain (or, like porn, just seeing without actually experiencing it). I really never thought reducing the amount of exposure would increase the satisfaction level of it, it seems so counter-intuitive.
I think most people (including me) are currently in the step two of your definitions-- decluttering. We're aware enough that this distraction sucks, not brave enough to ditch them for better things ahead.

Dude, I made crazy improvements and I want to tell you about them.
I organized everything you said for the 5 step plan into 5 pages(on my iPad but it could be paper too):
1. Things I waste my time and dopamine on. A list of stuff I do currently that's just destroying my life. These are things I can see and reflect on as my goal to beat.
2. A perfect environment. I have a room in my house that has barely anything in it besides clothes that I've dedicated now as my work space. It has a plug, a single overhead light, a window, and a pillow for me to sit on since I sit in chairs or lie on beds too much, so I need to adjust my position. Im only allowed to have my phone for researching and my iPad for the actual work in there.
3. I made a legit "Power Bar" that I wrote down times of the day on. In the green above everything else when I wake up I have basic stuff like stretching, brushing teeth, eating 1 thing, drinking something, and a shower. Everything below in the yellow to the orange-red is my tasks for the day, which will mainly be in that room I said earlier(and Im prompting myself to take notes always so I can build records of my thoughts and studies for more retention of what I think I grasped(it's like journaling without the aspect of it feeling like a diary since that feels a bit annoying and almost self-centered to me even if I understand its for my own development). In the red I have end of the day stuff like making a meal, spending family time, and getting ready for tomorrow a little before hygiene and bed.
4. I have a Reward Sheet(like a store). It feels so cool.
It's a list of "exchanges" I can do for doing certain things, so while it's the middle of the day and I need to work.. I can decide what reward Im going to want, so Ill do the associated task and after im done, I can redeem it! Literally mentally coding doing a long term investment for short term gratification. And I can only redeem one a day, so I can do any of the 4 I have written down in ANY order so my day feels variated and fresh while still having a routine.
I even snuck in a special option where if I do 2 hours of skill practice for anything that interests me or I feel inclined to want that day, I get 1 hour of ANYTHING I want.. so it's a special redemption I get once during the day, and I need to be wise about it because it's very freeing.
5. Probably my least favorite on the list, but still important. I have a "Rest" period where monday through Friday ill follow the energy bar guidelines and reward systems, but Saturday I account and prepare for my next week/future days with any unique tasks I need to adjust my new schedule for(shopping, unique appointments, etc), and Sunday I just need to eat, do laundry, do basic life assessment so I can track what I still need to do + how to get there, and manage my hygiene.. and then I can do whatever I want to relax for that day as my "free" day!
This 5 step plan seriously seems like it's going to dramatically shift my life and make me a better person. Im truly going to start tomorrow, but today I'll ease into it and prepare that room. This is the day I finally take hold of my unkept life and stop wasting my time like I've done since I was a little child!!!
And I have you to thank for it spoon. I have a very privileged life that I've been self-awaringly taking for granted, and I've been a major hypocrite in elaborating in how I want to fix my life yet I dont do anything about it.. but now I feel a new sense of purpose, like a door finally opened that I have the choice to either walk through or ignore again.. and I will not let it close, I'm going to fix my life finally.

I found tracking my time wasted is easier since I think I'm not wasting time until I see my track record. I find something Interesting and say This is cool let me learn more. Over time I can see them as distractions or simple entertainment. So it gives me more of an idea for my personal journey what I'm interested in and what is merely entertainment and worth my time ❤
