  • Grand Designs Series 5 Episode 16 With Kevin McCloud.
BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 24h year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

Kevin’s criticism is on spot! Pity the owners were so overly self-confident and complacent about their own ideas and “design skills”. Not to speak about economising on that temporary cladding of the roof, which actually led to their neighbours’ flats being damaged! That is downright egocentric and irresponsible. They can count themselves lucky they weren’t sued.

Wow what a wasted opportunity, that could have been a really special penthouse if they had kept their interior design in keeping with the building's art deco history. Instead they blunted the beauty of the solarium and created rooms that looked like offices from the 1980s. What a pity.

From the first, all I could thik about was the poor residents in the building having to suffer through the build above them. Thanks for sharing.

Selfish people, making a call not to cover the site which means they decided to risk flooding the neighbors. They did this to save money, later we learn they are adding thousands of pounds in alterations to the design.

Jeez, this episode made me so anxious I had to fast forward through it. Those poor elderly neighbors!
And I'm sure they're delighted to have to live with reconstruction happening INSIDE their homes.

  • @lmelki89

such self centered people. they knew they would damage their neighboors homes, having no shame to say they prefer to pay their damages than just protect the roof from rain because its cheaper to do so but have no problem paying for a whole new and unnecessary light system. no respect for those around them.

    • @irenecheca6575

Exactly was going to comment. No problem spending in last minute changing and considering whether is cheaper to reconstruct, And their house all finished and the redecoration at neighbors not done. Ugly people.

@@zh6636Nah, it's a matter of taste, the stainless steel looks right out of a 90's office building. Kevin calling the winding stairs "art deco" must have been wishfull thinking. The terrace and the view is nice though.

There are a few things I’ve learned from binge watching GD:
    - hire professionals for PM, architect and contractors
    - detail the plans beforehand to the degree that all are on the same page
    - fixate the materials and plan them carefully (durability, insulation, moisture absorption etc)
    - plan for safety: add at least 30% on top of the budget and schedule to have wiggle room (but don’t tell anyone, especially: see next point!)
    - keep your wife as far away as possible from the building process as she will make changes without regard to plans, timetables or budgets - sometimes even feasibility
    - in general: don’t replan major features during the process: think carefully about what you want upfront and stick to those points, smaller adjustments are ok - but to many will pile up
Of cause you can’t get everything perfectly, but these seem to be the big ones.

Many of these high end structures fall flat because the owners refuse to hire professionals to do interior design. This is a case in point. The owners have a busy collection of mismatched furniture that makes a dramatic structure look like a tag sale.

Again, having just seen the plans so far, it seems like they are giving the best, expansive, views to the rooms in which they will spend the least amount of waking hours - the bedrooms, leaving the living space to a very nice but very hemmed in view. Maybe they can't get to a patio area from that front existing part.

What a couple of brats! I’m amazed this project failed to require soundproofing, reinforcement and waterproofing of the units below before any construction began. Also, it could have stipulated all demolition to be done with minimal noise and during specific and limited time of day.

Why didn't they set the design in from the edge of the roof and then attach fencing around the build, instead of top to bottom scaffolding? None of the deck areas need to extend out to the edge of the roof for the view.

What kinds of people decides to gamble major damage to OTHER peoples properties to save on the financial cost to prevent that damage and THEN turns around and adds on expenditures to please their WHIMS immediately afterwards!?!?
The initial space was wonderful....The engineering efforts of the contractors AMAZING. But the attitudes of the homeowners is appalling. No apparent concerns for the imposition placed on their neighbors patience and the promises THEY made to those neighbors to get permission to even start the project.... Takes away from the enjoyment of the results.

How entitled is anyone to expect hard working people to completely destroy and reconstruct their work? They are not able to communicate with one another - I give their marriage a year and the place will be on the market soon after. I'm glad I'm not their neighbor and they should be as well...lol.

If I were the contractor, I'd have accepted a "fixed price", sure, but also with a stipulation that the fixed price would be for the design at the moment the contact was signed. You can't have some Balkan import bride on site constantly changing the locations of windows and ceilings, that's madness.

Definitely has an amateur architect feel. Space is not well utilized, chopped up in strange and inefficient ways (aside from dining room, window wall and deck). Finish materials look cheap and dated. Black countertops and dark finished wood cupboards look straight out of the 1980s.
