  • You can now pair both HomePod and HomePod mini speakers as default speakers to you Apple TV. And thanks to HDMI ARC and eARC, you can even pass audio from ANY device connected to your TV to your HomePods. This works for gaming consoles, receivers, DVD players, cable boxes, etc.

I found a great workaround to make your HomePods as the default speaker for your Mac. I set this up just like Shane explained and plugged my Mac Mini into one of the hdmi ports of my tv then went into sound settings under system preferences on my Mac and set the default speaker as my tv (Samsung QN90A). My HomePods now work as if they were plugged into my Mac Mini without any delays. This is life changing!

Thanks Shane. I use original HomePods for our projection TV, which is great if you don’t want to retrofit wiring. No noticeable lag with Apple TV. I also use HomePod Minis for our TV upstairs. Thanks Nick. Yea, I feel like that is the case for me too. Although the only place that I regularly use HomePods as default speakers for the TV is in my bedroom, and I typically don’t have the volume too loud (either for music or tv) so it’s not something that is very noticeable for me so far.

If you are talking about the minis, i see the más just basic (too basic tbh) smart speakers, you just out them on romos and thats all, the minis are by no means worth it for tv vs any basic and even cheaper soundbar, the OG homepods on the other hand are really nice for tv but unless you already have 2 of them or found them at really nice discount, something in the range of a Sonos beam still give them a run for it’s money

Great video and very thorough explanation. I have an A/V 5.1 stereo system in my main viewing area. After getting the new Apple TV remote, I was able to get eARC HDMI to work for my Denon receiver, Vizio TV, and AppleTV 4K (first generation) to all work together. Now when I hit the power button on my AppleTV remote, it wakes up the AppleTV, turns on my Denon receiver and sets the input to the correct thing, turns on my TV and sets the source to the correct setting, and then I can surf my AppleTV for the content I wish to watch. I rarely have to pick up any other remote now.

    • @ShaneCreates

Awesome! I’ve sort of been doing it like that for a while myself. In my main living room area I have a 5.1 surround system, which is typically connected via HDMI-ARC. Since Apple TV’s support HDMI-CEC, whenever I wake the Apple TV, the TV and soundbar all come on also. I pretty much only use the Apple TV remote also, especially since I almost never switch inputs on the TV. 😃

When this was enabled, were you still able to control the volume of the sound with the Apple TV remote / your regular TV remote. I noticed that the only way I can control the volume with this enabled is by physically adjusting it on my HomePod mini. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Have you used a HDMI switch box to connect multiple sources ( devices) and connect only one HDMI cable from the switch to your HDMI female ARC in your TV?

Hello Shane, thank you for this video, it really helped me to decide for hompods mini as stereo speakers for TV. I already own AppleTV 4k 2. gen. But to be sure, i want to ask you do apple tv needs to be turned on all the time i am using hompod minis as stereospeakers (for instance if i play PS5) or is it working even if apple tv is not on ? and second, if i set hompod minis as default speakers for TV and want to use it as a speaker for apple music, if i play music, does it switch automaticly when i stop listening and turn on TV? I hope you understand, sorry for bad english. Thanks for your time.

Would there be a way to connect a music output device to the TV through aux or Bluetooth to allow the music to play through my HomePods? I assume I would need adapters or certain cables for something like that, but not sure what to look for.

Thanks for clear and helpful video. Is there any audio lag while using game console? Also have you tried streaming audio to air pods instead of homepods? That should work similarly through eARC?

This isn’t from personal experience - but from reviews I’ve seen, the latency on Homepod 1 was definitely noticeable, at around 120 ms … They said homepod 2 resolved the latency issue where it is no longer noticeable.

Hi Shane, thanks for making the video. So correct me if I am wrong. I connect Apple TV 4K to the eARC port on my tv, the ps5 to a normal HDMI port, setup two homepods and the audio from the ps5, TV should come through the homepods? silly question but is there a delay in picture vs audio? Thanks.

Thanks for the vid! Quick question, does the sound pass through work for content on the tv, like smart apps like Netflix or Disney+? Content that isn’t from an external source?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  2 года назад

I would be using all these apps on the Apple TV, which in that case, yes the sound passes through.

You can only use up to two (stereo pair) as default speakers. To use more, you’d have to use airplay which isn’t tru surround sound.

In Apple TV setting there is no default option to put the AirPods. Only temporary. And there no other menu items like other inputs etc

How about using a pair HomePods and Apple TV with an AV Receiver for dolby atmos. When hooking up all the front, center, surround, back, and height, what will the HomePods take the place of? Will they be the front left and right instead of hooking up front left and right speakers, or will they be more like a soundbar? Thanks
