As a kid, I pulled the Elite Series Andre Dawson card. I had no idea what I had till a few months later, when I asked the owner of my local card shop about it. Dawson was my hero, and it was my first great card. I was 10, so I didn't keep it in great shape (it'd probably be PSA 6 now), but it's still one of my most prized cards for nostalgia.
Man, I watched my friend pull the Ryne Sandberg from the pack back in the day after we picked up a bunch of packs from thr gas station. I was so jealous lol
I pulled a Griffey Elite in 1991! Or 92, I can't remember. I was 14. A huge Will Clark fan. The shop gave me a hundred dollar bill, and a Will Clark Elite card in trade! Great memory!
I bought one wax pack of 89 donruss last week for a dollar off Ebay and pulled a Jr. rookie that looks perfect! Goes for $400-$500 online in a psa 10. Hopefully it's a 10!
I have two Matt Williams Donuss Elite cards, pulled them back in 1992 when I was 7. I live in Canada I've been watching your videos for almost a year. You're very informative on baseball players and cards. I have you to thank for getting back into the hobby.
could you imagine the adrenaline of pulling a ryne sandberg auto out of a pack back in 1991 insane! so cool crappy year of cards but donruss was ahead of its time in the numbered inserts game great video jabs
I've been putting together the Donruss puzzles lately. I use Mod Podge to glue them and then get a frame from the Dollar Tree. They look really nice hanging on the wall...
Michael Bahnsen yeah I agree. I just collect them because I like baseball and seeing the different designs through the years. The value and worth mean nothing to me.
These are the card that I have the most of! I always loved getting a Diamond King. I used to collect pop cans from off the streets to redeem for baseball card money!
Cal Ripken is opening a baseball field for kids in my town next year. I will be there for auto's. Hopefully he signs on baseball cards. I'm not sure if he does
This set would've had more potential if there weren't millions of each base card printed. The only plus about the design for me is the player photo. The photography is pretty clear for these cards. I remember in 1992 or 1993 a guy who was dating my cousin gave me a sealed complete 1991 Donruss Set just for helping him move a bunch of belongings from a U-Haul trailer. I still have the set. You can't beat free for this less than attractive set.
I pulled an elite in a box of 91 donruss. It was Doug Drabek, lol. It was still worth like $100 in the beckett though, which for a 6th grader made me feel like the monopoly man.
So the question on the table is.....is this one of the worst card sets because of the design or because they printed so many they are basically worthless? Would we be saying the same thing if this design was printed in very limited quantities? Or would we be talking about how cutting edge the design is? I’ve seen a lot of ugly sets in the last few years, but because they are fairly scarce everyone talks about how great the design is. Are our opinions of these sets due to their monetary value or their aesthetic value?
In this case, I think it's a combination of both. The cards are not very attractive. However, there are several overproduced sets that I really like, especially 1991 Topps. That set has a really nice design.
I love the 1991 Topps design as well. I also think the 1990 Fleer design is pretty clean but constantly see others berate it for being ugly. I think a lot of people don’t like these sets because they were burned by the crash of the hobby in the mid-90’s. Personally I think a lot of the sets from the 70’s are ugly as sin, but I can appreciate them as a product of that era. But because they are rather scarce people treat them as the second coming. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have the early 90’s leaf sets that were designed really well, but were way overproduced. People don’t buy them and they don’t have anything good to say about them either. Maybe if everybody burned theirs they would see the value in their design. I don’t know....
@@TheChoochooboy99 I also like 1990 Fleer. It's a simple design that looks nice. '85 Fleer is my favorite Fleer design. I can't think of any baseball designs from the '70s that I dislike. I especially like '71, '72, '74, '75, '76 and '77. I also really like '83 Topps. Two Topps designs that I hate are '86 and '90.
My dad figured out that trick where you see through the pack and know what the last card is, then that leads you to know all the cards in the pack. That allowed him to get many Michael Jordan rookie cards
Thanks for the video Erik. I did like you pull an Elite card of Terry Pendleton. Traded it for something I wanted at the time. I think book value was 100 bucks at the time.
Was there some sort of competition between Fleer and Donruss in the late 80's and early 90's to see who could make the most overproduced and ugly cards? LOL awful, just plain awful. I love this series man - you always give me a laugh listening to your commentary. Thanks for sharing man! Looking forward to the top 5.
I think Fleer and Donruss designs were pretty good in the late 80’s. Donruss started the ugliness in 1990 and Fleer followed suit in 1991. Donruss only seemed to have two really bad years followed by a couple of okay years and it got better after that. Fleer couldn’t make up its mind. 1991 through 1993 were bad. 1994 was excellent and 1995 was god awful. 1996 onward was really good for Fleer. It’s like the designers at Fleer had Tourettes back then.
I opened a ton of 1991 Donruss as a kid. Never even knew there was such a thing as the elite cards LOL. It's a good thing I guess, because I would have bought even more of these junk packs!
I bought a box of 1991 Donruss Series 1 just as it came out from the local card shop. The very first pack I opened had a Barry Bonds Elite Series card in it. I opened a ton of boxes trying to get another Elite Series card, but no luck. Should've quit while I was ahead!
The only positive I can think of is the serial numbered chase card. Even with 80,000 total produced in the Elite set, they are still nearly impossible to pull.
@@bowmanbrent419 It's widely regarded as the first set to feature a subset of serial numbered cards. It had a decent variety of subsets for 1991. I honestly don’t care if they vote the steroid suspects into the HOF, but not having Bonds is a joke. His first 10 years, before his head grew 10 sizes and his bat looked like a toothpick, and he was jacking 450 foot homeruns, he was easily the best player I ever saw. I remember a season he had 35 dingers and like 60 stolen bases, back when 30 homeruns was hard to get. The original 5 tool player deserves HOF. Regardless of the career finish.
