Dear Dr. Campbell. You mentioned the doctor in Africa wanting to test but has no kits. Well, I'm an ICU nurse in the USA. At least where I am, no one gets tested unless coming from China or connected to one. Hear out one of my examples: pt has come from overseas (not china though) and been through 6 international airports within a month, last time being about 2 weeks ago. Patient is in 30s, healthy/no hx prior, has every classic symptom of COVID19, within 2 weeks pt has progressed to the last stage being on ecmo, diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia now which is what happens to COVID19 patients. Even the MD agrees pt looks like a classic COVID19 case and yet per current policy Pt doesn't get tested and not even isolated and has been in an icu where only curtains separate patients. I have other info that would make this a whole lot alarming but can't share for the risk of pt privacy. What are the chances that it's already here under the radar. I guess we'll know in a month or 2 or at least I will because I've been exposed to it quiet properly myself. Anyways, it seems when it comes to testing at least, we are not doing much better than the good doctor in Africa. I wish in times like this governments would put in far more resources into testing/isolation/treatment before it's all too late.

I'm a new viewer to your channel having found it regarding current circumstances but I wanted to let you know that I wholeheartedly appreciate your videos, your explanations and going based off the facts we know. Not giving any kind of outside conjecture or people that are trying to spread these false stories. Obviously in a situation like this there's going to constantly be that sort of thing but you are basically the only one I've seen that is just stating the facts while giving your honest opinion and doing it with a level head and not giving a sense of dread, if you will. I know many other people on RUclips try to help but they often will play very ominous music during the intro or during their video. And I don't think that sort of thing helps. Even if they are trying to do good. So I just wanted extend my thanks to you. I live in the USA and I have shown many people your videos as they have found them to be very informative. The numbers from the Diamond Princess are truly disturbing. For the past 3 days, the number of reported infections have doubled every day, from 65 on Thursday to 138 on Friday to 258 today. At this rate every passenger on the ship will be reported infected by Wednesday. (Note that all those people already most likely have the virus, they're just in the incubation period.)
They are bringing the U.S. citizens in that ship to my City on Sunday. To a military base for quarantine. But I believe if they have symptoms they will be taken to a civilian hospital. This is scary. I live two miles away from the base.
If Corona virus is highly contagious, and can spread before symptoms, then I fail to understand government reasoning, for instance the case in Egypt, first it was a Chinese national, which means had to travel by plane, then the patient was in sohag Egypt which is over 200 miles away from the airport in Cairo, so how can it be contained as is being claimed. Patient had to go thru an entire airport, then God knows how the patient traveled from Cairo to sohag. I'm confused

There is a couple from Britain that are on that ship that have a youtube channel. The man is coming down with symptoms, but is still waiting to be tested. The channel is called diamond princess.
It is very interesting. Where I live in Belgium, we had one patient. He returned from China and appeared to have the virus after a blood test. He was put in a hospital for 11 days. He never showed symptoms and never felt ill. Today he recovered. He tested negative on two swabs on two days. There might be a lot of patients who have the virus but never show symptoms. This is very reassuring for People that they might not even notice they had the virus and recover. But this is also negative because they can still infect other People.

I saw a report from The Guardian today that one person on that ship that was allowed to dock in Cambodia has now been confirmed to have the virus.....after she flew to Malaysia with 144 more of the passengers who got off the ship. Has anyone else seen this anywhere? EDIT: I see now where other news spots are picking this up now, too.
This worries me now because i read in JAMA that doctors are seeing some patients showing gastrointestinal symptom even before respriatory. The Carribean Princess return to dock in the everglades because passengers started developing stomach symptoms.
Cant they thoroughly investigate what happened in his family home to find out why they didnt get infected? Maybe he didnt prepare food? Also is it possible they are infected but with such an early stage infection it cannot be detected. They really need to follow this guys case up so we can all learn from it.

I'd say there is a lot of speculation about what this virus can and cannot do. As for factual statements, there is no or no good evidence that COVID triggers a similar response as the Spanish Flu. If you look at the death rate for Spanish Flu, a LOT of the deaths came from very healthy and young people. From the data we have from China and outside of China, the majority of deaths came from the old/immunocompromised. I BELIEVE that there have been basically no deaths coming from the 15-25 age bracket. If there are cytokine storm reactions, it doesn't seem to be on a large scale at all.
They test those with symptoms first so it is self selecting sample. It can not be extrapolated that way. Also it seems that the tests were inconclusive so they came up with some new tests - also based on the reports from the ship Japanese authorities have big problems handling the situation. You can find David Abel on youtube or facebook - he posts everyday video of his life on the ship.

It blows my mind that people are reluctant to quarantine, in Yorkshire England our family have been inside since the York cases were confirmed but haven’t heard anything since, living off of the stockpile! Hopefully there will be some clarity soon, better to be safe than sorry.
Make sure you don't use up your stockpile too soon, and then when the outbreak really starts, you might find that you can't restock. European emergency food suppliers are almost out of supplies for sale to general public. Very soon we will have to rely solely on usual shops, and they could empty out within hours. Good for you, having a stockpile, but don't reduce it too soon.....😟

We have the cascadia fault line that is expected to create a 9.0 megathrust quake ...can happen at any time. 🤨 😕 In my community - the lady who sells subscrptions to TV's in local hospital said there was an outbreak in another tower of the same local hospital. I have been visiting a friend (admitted for another physical concern) for a month in the other hospital tower. Nothing has been reported in our local press, no additional cases noted. I also have grandchildren (usually brief contact with them a few times a week), and ever since I spoke to the TV sales lady I have been concerned for them. I have taken time away from visiting the hospital now, but a few concerns: My own health (pretty good, but...), my friend's health, my grandchildren and their parent's health. Also, I happened to be in the affected tower about 3X's for an hour each time, in this last month, probably around the time of the so-called outbreak. At this point I am concerned about what to do, or what to do first. Somehow writing about this half way around the world feels safer for the time being. We have a 65% to 70% Chinese community here where I live, but many are 2nd and 3rd generation, but one child in one of the classes had been visiting Wuhan over Christmas. When that was discovered, 17 children were picked up from my one granddaughter's class. My grandchildren are (mostly) the only non-Asian children in their schools. So, my dilema is many fold.
Apparently you need not worry for your grandkids, according to most of the current info, this virus affects children least of all, those children who were infected were reported to be asymptomatic, mild, very stable condition. The WHO is a political organization. Keep in mind that China refused help from American experts but allowed the WHO to investigate because the WHO will only release info that is approved by China's government.

Medical issues have always appealed to me, perhaps due to my father being a former neurosurgeon assistant to Dr Walter Dandy at John Hopkins. Here, in Argentina, we have not had cases yet, but IT does worry me to see how the virus increases in and out of China. I think information about is crucial, so I have seen several videos on internet and RUclips and read about IT. IT's dificult to see how the medical staff in China undergo such stressful situation, some of them already infected and patients that cannot get all the attention they need. @@rflsr5276 Yes...Herpes goes dormant and goes symptomatic when the coditions are right. Certain foods, sugar, sun, and slightly elevated temperatures act to inhibit your immune system so that it starts replicating. It isn't the same though as being reinfected. It is worse.

Googling "coronavirus angiotensin" revealed an article at BMJ (British Medical Journal) that says: "Based on this, we hypothesize the use of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) available for clinical use can be potential drugs to be given for control of viral spread of novel corona virus (Wuhan) infection. An unpublished observation by one of us (MP) is that people using Losartan or Telmisartan tablets as antihypertensives get lesser attacks of cold & flu like illnesses. Both these drugs also do not produce cough as the side effect so commonly seen with ACE inhibitors."
The thing that scares me most is not knowing what's going on. Ever since I found your channel though. I feel more grounded. I wish you could tell us what is going on in the US in California. So one funeral home in Wuhan said they were getting 4 to 5 times the amount of corpses than usual, now averaging 115 bodies per day with only 6% confirmed as death by pneumonia. However only around 35% came from hospitals, the other 65% were picked up from homes, so had not registered as pneumonia related deaths. So this is just one funeral home, and this alone is conceivable that just one funeral home is cremating more bodies per month than the current registered death count.
Let me add to the many tokens of appreciation in the comments. I've been following you since way before this outbreak and I've always admired your skills and erudition as a tutor, especially since I'm in teacher training myself. Thank you so much for your tremendous efforts in educating laymen in complex matters such as anatomy, physiology and pathology. I reckon you have saved many a student from failing his exams due to lesser teachers. Your voice is a voice of calm, reason and caution amidst this coronavirus business and it is most welcome.
Two things I noticed: 1. The Diabetes 2 risk factor isn't primarily due to the blood sugar. Diabetes 2 correlates with an ACE overexpression and the imbalance of Angiotensin I and II metabolites cause inflammation (including the endothelium). The kidneys hyperfiltrate potassium but retent sodium and water. That actually causes the hypertension. SARS-CoV-2 blocks the ACE2 receptors somehow and that is amplifying this imbalance. Angiotensin II builds up but there aren't sufficient ACE2 cells left to convert it to Angiotensin 1-7. For the same reason, smokers are more affected. ACE is more expressed and more active in smoker groups. Childs normally don't smoke and aren't hypertensive so often. So they are less likely to develop COVID-19. 2. You are taking one negative test of wife, nephew, and son as reliable but they aren't. It's possible that they had the infection and recovered quickly (an antibody test would show that). It's possible as well that they have an ongoing infection but the test was false negative. The PCR has proven to be ineffective unless repeatedly confirmed. They should look into other testing methods, e.g. IgM/IgG tests, and Angiotensin metabolites (that's probably where the sore throat before fever comes from).

The numbers from the Diamond Princess are truly disturbing. For the past 3 days, the number of reported infections have doubled every day, from 65 on Thursday to 138 on Friday to 258 today. At this rate every passenger on the ship will be reported infected by Wednesday. (Note that all those people already most likely have the virus, they're just in the incubation period.)
They are bringing the U.S. citizens in that ship to my City on Sunday. To a military base for quarantine. But I believe if they have symptoms they will be taken to a civilian hospital. This is scary. I live two miles away from the base.

It is very interesting. Where I live in Belgium, we had one patient. He returned from China and appeared to have the virus after a blood test. He was put in a hospital for 11 days. He never showed symptoms and never felt ill. Today he recovered. He tested negative on two swabs on two days. There might be a lot of patients who have the virus but never show symptoms. This is very reassuring for People that they might not even notice they had the virus and recover. But this is also negative because they can still infect other People.

I'd say there is a lot of speculation about what this virus can and cannot do. As for factual statements, there is no or no good evidence that COVID triggers a similar response as the Spanish Flu.
If you look at the death rate for Spanish Flu, a LOT of the deaths came from very healthy and young people. From the data we have from China and outside of China, the majority of deaths came from the old/immunocompromised. I BELIEVE that there have been basically no deaths coming from the 15-25 age bracket.
If there are cytokine storm reactions, it doesn't seem to be on a large scale at all.

In my community - the lady who sells subscrptions to TV's in local hospital said there was an outbreak in another tower of the same local hospital.
I have been visiting a friend (admitted for another physical concern) for a month in the other hospital tower.
Nothing has been reported in our local press, no additional cases noted.
I also have grandchildren (usually brief contact with them a few times a week), and ever since I spoke to the TV sales lady I have been concerned for them.
I have taken time away from visiting the hospital now, but a few concerns: My own health (pretty good, but...), my friend's health, my grandchildren and their parent's health.
Also, I happened to be in the affected tower about 3X's for an hour each time, in this last month, probably around the time of the so-called outbreak.
At this point I am concerned about what to do, or what to do first.
Somehow writing about this half way around the world feels safer for the time being.
We have a 65% to 70% Chinese community here where I live, but many are 2nd and 3rd generation, but one child in one of the classes had been visiting Wuhan over Christmas. When that was discovered, 17 children were picked up from my one granddaughter's class. My grandchildren are (mostly) the only non-Asian children in their schools.
So, my dilema is many fold.
Apparently you need not worry for your grandkids, according to most of the current info, this virus affects children least of all, those children who were infected were reported to be asymptomatic, mild, very stable condition. Today or yesterday there was a very helpful video from Dr on how to protect ourselves and our families at such a time, it should be useful for everyone. Best wishes!!!

We've had two tourists with the virus vacation on the island of Oahu, then go home and get diagnosed with the virus - My home of Hawai'I is now a petri dish and hoping our islands aren't decimated by this disease - our health care system is NOT adequate on the outer islands to save lives.

I feel comfortable with the content here, but have to wonder if the characteristics of the messenger (older, white, British accent, print-outs w/ink notes vs. slides w/highlighter vs. slides with on-screen written notes, etc.) aren't playing a part in that. The media is still the message, and all that...

Medical issues have always appealed to me, perhaps due to my father being a former neurosurgeon assistant to Dr Walter Dandy at John Hopkins. Here, in Argentina, we have not had cases yet, but IT does worry me to see how the virus increases in and out of China. I think information about is crucial, so I have seen several videos on internet and RUclips and read about IT. IT's dificult to see how the medical staff in China undergo such stressful situation, some of them already infected and patients that cannot get all the attention they need. Let's hope China finds through these trials you mentioned an effective way to control the COVID-19.

@@rflsr5276 Yes...Herpes goes dormant and goes symptomatic when the coditions are right. Certain foods, sugar, sun, and slightly elevated temperatures act to inhibit your immune system so that it starts replicating. It isn't the same though as being reinfected. It is worse.
@@bluewaters3100 Herpes is a DNA virus, completely unrelated to coronaviruses.
There is no indication that the virus integrates into our genetic material.

Good morning Dr. Campbell. I recently read an article in JAMA that doctors are seeing some patients having gastrointestinal symptoms before symptoms in the lungs. Not sure the timeline but it suprised the doctors.
Ninja k Some doctors are reporting there might also be severe damage to other organs as well, even if one has "recovered."

8 of the 9 from UK patients have recovered with minimal treatment needed last one I'm assuming is the Chinese woman who's only just been quarantined

ACE inhibitors? would those simple drugs impact the virus pathway?
I have been asking that for 2 weeks now. No straight answer though.
Googling "coronavirus angiotensin" revealed an article at BMJ (British Medical Journal) that says:
"Based on this, we hypothesize the use of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) available for clinical use can be potential drugs to be given for control of viral spread of novel corona virus (Wuhan) infection. An unpublished observation by one of us (MP) is that people using Losartan or Telmisartan tablets as antihypertensives get lesser attacks of cold & flu like illnesses. Both these drugs also do not produce cough as the side effect so commonly seen with ACE inhibitors."

The thing that scares me most is not knowing what's going on. Ever since I found your channel though. I feel more grounded. I wish you could tell us what is going on in the US in California. It is so confusing. Everyday I'm trying to do everything I can to improve my and my families immune systems. Positive thinking, good nutrition, vitamins, lots of water, good hygiene, getting in the sun and breathing fresh air deeply. Somewhat prepping but we have limited funds to do so. the virus isn’t as dangerous as you think. it’s just whether it can be contained.
So one funeral home in Wuhan said they were getting 4 to 5 times the amount of corpses than usual, now averaging 115 bodies per day with only 6% confirmed as death by pneumonia.
However only around 35% came from hospitals, the other 65% were picked up from homes, so had not registered as pneumonia related deaths.
So this is just one funeral home, and this alone is conceivable that just one funeral home is cremating more bodies per month than the current registered death count.

Let me add to the many tokens of appreciation in the comments. I've been following you since way before this outbreak and I've always admired your skills and erudition as a tutor, especially since I'm in teacher training myself. Thank you so much for your tremendous efforts in educating laymen in complex matters such as anatomy, physiology and pathology. I reckon you have saved many a student from failing his exams due to lesser teachers. Your voice is a voice of calm, reason and caution amidst this coronavirus business and it is most welcome.
Two things I noticed:
1. The Diabetes 2 risk factor isn't primarily due to the blood sugar. Diabetes 2 correlates with an ACE overexpression and the imbalance of Angiotensin I and II metabolites cause inflammation (including the endothelium). The kidneys hyperfiltrate potassium but retent sodium and water. That actually causes the hypertension. SARS-CoV-2 blocks the ACE2 receptors somehow and that is amplifying this imbalance. Angiotensin II builds up but there aren't sufficient ACE2 cells left to convert it to Angiotensin 1-7. For the same reason, smokers are more affected. ACE is more expressed and more active in smoker groups. Childs normally don't smoke and aren't hypertensive so often. So they are less likely to develop COVID-19.
2. You are taking one negative test of wife, nephew, and son as reliable but they aren't. It's possible that they had the infection and recovered quickly (an antibody test would show that). It's possible as well that they have an ongoing infection but the test was false negative. The PCR has proven to be ineffective unless repeatedly confirmed. They should look into other testing methods, e.g. IgM/IgG tests, and Angiotensin metabolites (that's probably where the sore throat before fever comes from).
JOHN! Again, "RT" in RT-PCR stands for Reverse Transcriptase, not "real time".
