I woke up rather slowly today and now have set an intention to open up a new sewing machine I have had for three or four months. I wanted to make something artsy... My old machine was stolen! It was my grandmother's... also they took the treadle one that her grandmother used to sew her baby dresses in 1899... So I was not very enthusiastic about the new one really. I needed a push, and this absolutely did that, Anything you do is just a treasure! Cannot wait for week 2!
Gayla Pappenfoht Sorry to hear that you had your machines stolen but I’m glad that you are going to be opening up your new sewing machine. I’m so happy I have mine even though I’m not a professional seamstress I love to add the sewn look to junk journals and things like this. See you next Tuesday!
Very nice - I really wasn't too sure what a needle keep was or who would need one, so was kinda waiting to see what this would look like and - I really like it! I usually just keep my needles in their original packaging, on a spool of thread, or in a little plastic slider - but this is much cuter and cooler, actually. The fact that you added a place for small sewing supplies like the ruler, scissors, etc - really brought out the practicality of this. You can just throw this complete sewing kit in a bag. This is great - I'm not a sewer so all the sewing isn't thrilling for me, but I think I could figure this out. If not, I could certainly just glue the fabrics. I like this size and I like the mini size idea, too. Off to try and make some of these in my own style.
I like your attitude! I know sewing isn't for everyone but there is always a do around if you put your mind to it and I will show another needle keep next week with little to no sewing. Let me know how yours comes out!
You can use your bone folder to help turn out, poke out corners, and to run around the seams on the inside to flatten and smooth the seam before ironing. Works perfectly. This is a great project. I have been making needle holders for a long time, but will definitely try this one. Thanks for the inspiration. Barb Pacific NW
I had to watch this again lol...I just love it!! Using your old overalls was the cutest idea! This is so creative, very unique! Makes me want to dig out my old overalls and have at it lol. This is definitely on my list! Thanks so much for sharing!! Leslie ~ Alabama, USA
You had me when you told the story of saving the fabric. My house caught on fire in 2005, and my favorite memory of my son was lost -- when he was 2, he was tall and thin. The child kept growing up and not out -- anyway, at a yard sale I bought a size 4 pair of oshgosh overalls for 50 cents, and just rolled up the legs -- and he wore them until he was four and then got too tall -- I love tutorial Tuesday, even though I'm watching on Thursday for the first time right now, and I'm going to leave the computer and watch on tv, but wanted to say thanks so much for the tutorial -- because of you I'm using my watercolors more and more, and I appreciate it so much -- be well. I hope you're not affected by the terrible fires. I live in Virginia, and in past years of severe drought we've had huge fires in the national forests --- it's devastating. My thoughts and prayers are with you all -- Patricia
Annette DePete You’re welcome thank you so much for watching see you next Tuesday I’m gonna have some fun things made I might even have a couple I’m excited!
As always great tutorial creating the keep. I especially love your added ideas that always bring the project to life! Looking forward to next week. Again thank you. I would love to come over your house one day to play but I am not traveling these days! Lol
Hi Robyn - This is going to be great for all your needles and things. I’ve been wanting to make one for myself. This may be what I make. I’m glad you popped up on my feed. New subscriber to your channel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and seeing the finished needle keep. Thanks!
pam ketron Thanks Pam I’m glad you’re enjoying the lesson and that I popped up in your feed. Thank you so much for subscribing I’ll see you next Tuesday!
rhonda marshall Thanks Rhonda as soon as I finish working on some things that I have to finish on I’m gonna go play and videotape it the rest of the project, I’m excited. See you next Tuesday!
Love your take on the needle keep. I like the mixer of fabrics and trims. Pretty lace pocket. I have wanted to make one so this gives me some great ideas.
Hi Robin, thank you for making this. I was hoping you would. I live abroad and wool felt would be impossible to find here, so I am thinking of trying to find thinnish sweaters at the recycled clothing store and felting it myself. Also, you've made me think of a pair of camo cargo pants I have and making the needle keep out of those. Then making it girly with embroidered flowers and appliqued flower fabrics. Can't wait to see yours finished. Thank you!! xx
Patricia That sounds like it’s going to be super cool. I’m glad you were inspired to make one with recycled materials. You can also find wool clothing at thrift stores and felt it. See you next Tuesday!
Another awesome project, Robyn! I need to put this one in my crafty bucket list because I'm working on something else now, but I'm loving how yours is turning out!!!
Beautiful I’ve been watching a lot of these needle book tutorials and I’m really enjoying your style. I’m going on vacation next week. I’m hoping to make my book then.
I love this! I’ll be following along! I always wanted to make one! Thank you so very much for your very informative fabulous videos! I really appreciate you and your time!
Hi Robin, for those who want/need to add interfacing the measurement is 9 x 14. So iron it onto the side of the fabric where you are not folding the fabric in to make the pocket. And it needs to be ironed onto the wrong side. Great pattern so far, I'm still at the beginning just after you folded everything prior to ironing.
beachsidelynn Thank you so much for the tip I really appreciate that. Looking forward to see what you make with the pattern thanks for watching see you next Tuesday!
Oh that's funny! Yes I have a pouch I use for only my jewelry tools and it has been a life saver. I plan on making more of these booklets not just for needles and such but for other things that I loose all the time!
Robin, this is adorable and much more interesting than most other needle keeps I've seen. Your embellishment and decoration have made it even more unique and lovely. Did you know that needles are typically stored on felt because the lanolin in the wool helps the needle glide through fabric easily? As you mentioned, pure wool felt is hard to come by these days, but I have some that was my mother's that's older than I am (so about 60yo) and I'm going to use it to make my own needle keep. Or, another one, I should say. I hadn't thought about felting it, so I'm glad you mentioned that. Love the feel of felted wool. Looking forward to part deux. ~ Lisa (edited to correct my grammar)
L B Thank you so much I’m glad you are enjoying the project. I had no idea about the lanolin in wool helping the needle , wow that is so cool! I found a store on Etsy that sells a huge amount of colors in wool felt mixes and also 100% wool felt by the yard. I put the link in the description below of the video if you’re interested. Tell me, is the wool that was your mothers thinner than what you can buy now? Because I have an old brooch made from wool felt and beads that looks like it was a souvenir fromYuma, and the little felt flowers on the brooch are a thinner wool felt, which I like. I’ll show it in next tutorial. Thanks for watching!
@@robindudleyhowes Yes, Robin, the felt is thinner and has a tighter weave, almost like it's been felted. It feels wonderful in the hand and the colors - pink, blue, and a gorgeous yellow - are so much softer than the garish colors of felt today. Mom made curtains for our nursery out of a heavy cream fabric and she cut animal shapes out of the felt and appliqued them along the curtain hem. She had lots of leftover animal shapes and they're showing their age around the edges. They're so beautiful and I'm looking for ways to use them in my journals.
Love the ! Oh and the Chartruese with roses fabric is so pretty! Is this a non cotton, light scarf material? The Roses would go so well with my Journal I'm getting finished up. I'm so glad for your YT video, I don't like to follow instructions either, but looks like she has several bags of instructions! My sewing machine is ready to sew this little Needle Keep, now I just have to sort through my stash and see what I want to make it from. Thanks Robin.
Life, Health and Wellness Yes the chartreuse and rose fabric is a very thin cotton like something made for a summer dress. Have fun making I needle keep!
You mentioned that you cut the centre piece wrong...maybe it's just folded wrong. Try folding in half the other direction because it's 8 x 9. I was trying to do the math in my head as I watched the video......but I like it sticking out the top and bottom.

Just saw the part 2 but it wouldn’t take my comment for some reason...it’s absolutely beautiful....love everything about it....colors are perfect.
Cathie Spalding thanks Cathy. I had to delete the first video because it was missing some footage so that may have been the one you referred to.
Love your changes to the original idea. Mine will travel with me in the winter when I visit my sister in Albuquerque!
Marcia Hero Awesome thanks so much for watching appreciate and your kind comments see you next Tuesday!
Possibilities with the larger size, like you said, for painters and drawers etc. Love the color combos and dress form....gonna be special.
Thanks Tama!
