  • Mabel's Married Life is a Keystone comedy short film. It was directed by Mack Sennett , while Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand also collaborated on the screenplay, playing the roles of the leads.
In this film, Chaplin is a jealous husband that faces a heavier opponent. A remarkable scene from the film shows the protagonist returning home drunk to mistake a mannequin for his corpulent rival (9:42).
Synopsis . (0:06) In a park Mr. Wellington (Mack Swain) wanders away from his lady (Eva Nelson) on the pretext of having to play a game of tennis, but wandering about he finds a woman all alone (Mabel Normand) whom he begins to court (1:21). The girl is also accompanied; her husband (Charlie Chaplin) has recently left to go to the bar on the doorstep of which, drunk (2:35), he notices his consort's new beau and runs to claim his belle. During the discussion, the rival throws away the drunkard's hat (3:37), which accidentally ends up near the bench where his wife is sitting. The drunkard runs to retrieve it, and when he returns to the scene of the dispute (4:32), he notices that the two have moved away; the improvised tennis player's wife also catches up with him and eventually manages to separate him from his new flame. Meanwhile, the drunk returns to the bar (5:28) and finds himself embroiled in a fight with his former rival, while his consort goes to buy a boxing dummy for him to practice on (5:57). Returning home late at night and decidedly drunker than before (9:42), the man finds the dummy waiting for him: believing it to be an intruder, he begins a frenzied fight with the dummy until his wife manages to prove to him the true nature of the object.

Yes, Chaplin was a genius and also he was very lucky to find a few "small" geniuses, his extremely talented partners, to keep him on top for a long time.

And part of that dynamic group of early cinema innovators who together with DW Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks formed United Artists in 1919 to relegate to themselves autonomy in the film making and distribution process.
