  • Another northwester at 40 knots through Welly means more drama at Wellington Airport, including two go arounds in this video.

An Air NZ pilot told me once that when taking off into the Northerly it was the wind that made it safer. His view was that if you lost an engine you only had one option and that was to pull a hard right and exit via the harbor entrance. Going up the Hutt Valley isn't on and the Newlands escarpment to the North needs altitude that you might not have. Couple of weeks ago I watched a Singapore B777 land from the north. Not a particularly large craft but coming down Evans Bay it looked huge. Good to see a Straits Air Cessna Caravan in the mix. Those guys (and gals) land in Welly 5 or 6 times a shift.

Great footage! I often fly from Australia to NZ (primarily AKL, CHC and ZQN) but haven't yet flown into Wellington. I'll have to add it to my list! :)

Not for the timid or nervous passenger.
Which ever way you leave the island, by sea or air, the journey can be truly memorable for the extreme weather.

I've been in one of these landings before and I thought I was going to die. The turbulence coming in was so horrendous I felt like throwing up and my hands were white I was gripping the handrests so tightly. I have never been scared of flying but that day made me want to find another of way of getting back to Chch!

Wellington has a very defined landing area due to short runway. Check the go around at 3:30. If you miss thatin a jet you have to go around. From looking at the location of the aircraft at 11:50, I think it would have missed the landing area. The pilot made a choice to abort early, which is always good. Then, again, it could have been windshear as Andrew says. Or the pilot had to make a quick toilet break!

I flew into Wellington on an Ansett 737 in 1997. I had a port window seat and briefly got a clear view of the runway about 500 ft off the ground. I don't know if that's normal but it seemed a bit odd to me.

What are you talking about exyreme? The majority of those landings are in calm weather mate. When you see the waves over the rocks and onto the runway then you can talk extreme. Wellingtons always been a fun airport to watch planes in and out. And to travel into. There was that time when a plane almost clipped the picton ferry, guess the pilot thought it was an aircraft carrier..

Wellington to Perth and Perth to Wellington using the 787-9 Full Time
They don't do this route currently .

    Wellington to Melborune
    and
    Wellington to Sydney using A320-200s
