In March 2021 Patrick had the great pleasure to be allowed otherwise closed New Zealand, a COVID-19-free island in a world badly hit by the pandemic at that time. At the time of filming the retirement of the filmed airframe, Air Chathams Convair 580 ZK-CIE, was scheduled for September the same year. Being the last purely passenger configured Convair aircraft in operation globally, this was an extremely rare and late chance to capture the legacy of Convair's plane making legacy for future generations. Enjoy a fantastic ferry flight from Auckland to Christchurch. Two hours of flight in which you'll get to know Captain Alex and F/O Daryl, two true aviators, friends and great ambassadors for Air Chathams. Learn a lot about how it is to operate Convair passenger flights and on top enjoy a lot of relaxed and funny cockpit banter.
For all filming conducted in security restricted and/ or safety relevant areas, all required approvals are obtained well before our on-site work starts. Calls to and readbacks from ATC are re-enacted based on memory and outside of the actual communication.
At AirClips.com it’s all about YOU! Thank you for being with us and for your loyalty. It’d great to have you on board! Now fasten your seat belts, please…

I actually worked on this aircraft, N565EA, at ERA Aviation as an avionics tech. This was the "baby" of the fleet (lowest flight hours). It was our parent companies corporate plane that was converted to a passenger plane. I was also privileged to move the CV580 simulator from Texas to Anchorage Alaska. It was a massive undertaking with a room full of cabinets of vacuum tubes and cables. I believe Chatham bought all 4 of our Convairs and the simulator. We were sorry to see them go because the replacements were Beech 1900D's! Glad to see them still proving their usefulness. I might have put my initials and date under the trim wheel cover!

N565EA was sweet airplane! The lowest time 580 in the world I think? I am grateful that I got to spend a couple of years flying her to Kodiak, Valdez, Cordova and the like. She was a brute, yet powerful and smooth. Water injection T/O was super cool. No A/P, hand flying and trimming all day long. Great memories from my youth!

A wonderful video of such a beautiful classic airliner from a past era. The outside camera sequences had the plane looking very sharp. Would have dearly loved to have flown something as unique as this, but the CPL is long dusty and just not enough hours. Good to see with the empty cabin you were able to load the spare weight capacity with Go-Pros and tons of duct tape. A unique opportunity to get amazing footage of those big Allisons purring! Great flying over NZRT, where I did a lot of my PPL training a long time ago. Always enjoyed landing on Rwy11 after a circling approach on one engine when doing my IR training. NZCH is my home airport. Thank you for such a neat video. David

Back in the mid-80s I flew the Bush in Bethel, Alaska. One of the pilots I flew with used to fly those for M
    arkair.
Bethel has a 6000 foot runway. North-south. He said when he was empty he would ask for an unlimited climb out. He'd make a Max power takeoff, then turn right next to the end of the runway very short crosswind and then make close downwind and before crossing the approach end, he was passing 10,000 feet.

When my Dad worked for Allison Div.GMC, He was part of the team that engineered The T 56 engine conversion project that took piston engined Convair 440's to turbo prop power. I don't know how many planes were converted or if there were any New CV580s built.
    The time frame was Mid-1950's.
The conversion took place at Convair's plant in California. My Dad made many trips out there on this project.

Great video.. I was a kid in the 60s living with two households... I would fly twice a year Phx to Pueblo CO with Frontier on the 580.. The flight had at least half a dozen stops and because of its route (basically the I25 corridor out of Albuquerque to Denver) The route earned the name Vomit Comet for the 580... What I remember most? prop noise on landing.. do not know if they went flat or into beta but they were loud... Was always excited for that trip...
