Fun Fact: The song "Heaven Must Have Sent You" was written by the Motown writing team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. According to Eddie Holland: "The guy in The Elgins, Johnny Dawson, was driving for Brian and myself. He had his group on the side. He said, 'Eddie, I’m working for you guys, I’m going to the store and getting you food, can you do a song on us?' I really didn’t think too much of the song 'Heaven Must Have Sent You.' I said, “Well, what about this?” I gave it to him to appease him, I never knew the song was gonna be a hit. Next thing I knew they were flying off to Europe and they got a hit song!"

Don't think I've heard this since hearing it an an AM radio in 1966. I never knew the Elgins were the first to come out with this song. I always thought it was Bonnie Pointer (one of the original Pointer Sisters- before going solo) from 1979. It was a big disco hit. Either way both versions are great to listen to!!
American Bandstand!!!THE BIGGEST SATURDAY MORNING SHOW of the 60's..Had ALL the big music makers of the time go on the show, and everyone danced while the group performed. Afterwards, there was a short Q&A...You two brought it all back for me today, for a little while... THANK YOU.!!
You hit the nail on the head there. Music doesn’t care if you black, brown, yellow or white. If your music is good everyone is going to enjoy listening to you. Music really does bring the world together. I do think too many of todays musicians try and divide with their songs instead of unite like the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s did.
The Elgins were an American R & B vocal group, that was signed to the VIP Records label (a sister label of Motown Records). They were together from 1965 to 1967. Saundra Mallett, who became Saundra Edwards after getting married, was the lead singer. The backup singers were Robert Fleming, Johnny Dawson, Cleo "Duke" Miller, and Norman McLean (Note: only three backup singers are seen in this syndicated TV performance, which was an indication that the group was in turmoil, and about to break up). The male members of The Elgins reunited in the 1990s, and hired another female singer to be the lead singer. Saundra Mallett Edwards continued on as a solo artist at this time as well. She died in 2002. The Elgins only released one album on VIP Records, ""Darling Baby" (1966), and a second hit single, "Put Yourself In My Place". In 1979, Bonnie Pointer recorded a cover of "Heaven Must Have Sent You".
This is what I know as a beach music song. In The South we have a dance known as the "Shag". There are so many wonderful songs done by amazing artists and remade by amazing artist's. I would suggest you listen to anything by The Showmen. Later they became Chairman of The Board and General Johnson and The Chairman of The Board. There was not a finer group of singers or band members. The most famous song is "39-21-40 Shape". I love watching you kids discover what I have lived with and am glad that it will carry on long past my time because of you.
Aw, guys! You have taken me right back to my youth club days, 50 years ago! I remember the dance that we girls used to do to this!. Same time was “third finger, left hand” by Martha and the vandellas. Such good music!..
This is the only song by it's title that I remember by the Elgin's & it was a favorite if mine. Gladys Knight also had men as her back up when she first started. There are many girl groups as well and female solo artist. Martha & the Vandellas Mary Wells The Marvelettes Brenda Holloway The Chiffons The Crystals Fontella Bass The Shirrells The Supremes Connie Francis, a beautiful voice. I was very young listening to these females artist but this young woman brought tears to my eyes, her voice was so beautiful. Patty LaBelle & the Blue Bells, Song titled "Down The Aisle" was thee wedding song of the 60's. Please react to this song. Patti Drew, Tell Him, one of my favs Betty Wright Tammi Terrell Candi Station Kim Weston Betty LaVette Betty Everett Tina Marie, not 60's but deserves a mention. Brenda and the Tabulations Dee Dee Sharp Denise La Salle So many more.
Bread was more of a 70s group (they started in 68 if memory serves and had their first hit in 69 with It Don't Matter to Me but you are right that David Gates' voice is. amazing
Until a few years ago I swore this was the Pointer Sisters. The Elgins was one of the groups whose members came together to make the Temptations (the other was the Primes). Motown held onto the name after the Temptations took off, and put it to use for this group. Check out Bonnie Pointer's disco version (it has banjo!) from 1979 -- she actually negotiated with Berry Gordy for the OK to record this song on her Motown debut.
"Heaven Must Have Sent You" was released on Motown's "V.I.P." label by "The Elgins" in August 1966. On the WIBG Top 99 it peaked at #20. It did even better at Philly's other Pop station WFIL where it peaked at #14 and also reached #4 on WDAS & #7 at WHAT. The Elgins, recorded as The Sensations, The Five Emeralds, and The Downbeats as an all male group on various small labels in Detroit. When they joined Motown, the label suggested they add a female lead singer and Saundra Mallett was added as lead vocalist. Berry Gordy wanted to use the name Elgins, which had previously been one of the names used by The Temptations. In 1979 a disco cover of "Heaven Must Have Sent You" was released by Motown's "Bonnie Porter" & reached #11 on the Hot 100.
I love those backup singers/ dancers! So smooth! I was 11 when this came out. It doesn't look like they were together for very long but loved that Motown sound!
Wow, I’d never heard of this group before but what a great song! You guys should really check out Motown Records’ Martha and the Vandellas. Songs like Dancing in the Street, Heatwave and Jimmy Mack just make you feel good. But it’s their songs in minor keys that I love the most, like Nowhere to Run. They were like the Supremes only they didn’t get as much publicity, even though they were just as talented. I guarantee you guys will love them.
All American singing has it’s roots in Louis Armstrong. There is a decidedly before and after. Many people see Louis Armstrong as a gravelly voiced old man with a handkerchief. However if you check out Dinah from 1927 you will hear what Crosby and Sinatra heard, the birth of modern American singing.
You guys should definitely check out Barbra Lynn's "You'll Lose A Good Thing" from her 1966 appearance on The Beat. She not only wrote a lot of her songs, but she also played lead guitar - left handed. Very unusual for that time.
Written by Holland Dozier Holland ,from the Motown Studious of the 1960s. This songwriting trio would go on to write several hits for the Supremes & Four Tops. The 50s & 60s were great when it came to love ballads, but do not forget the 70s.😅
Hello from Belgium ! I am 22 and a huge fan of The Elgins and their lead singer Saundra Mallett Edwards (RIP). If you love this song, their also had a big hit with "Darling Baby". Unfortunately they weren't a big group of Motown, but I do think that they could have gone bigger with more exposure. Songs like "Love Is The Answer", "It's Gonna Be Hard Times", "All I Got" are so beautiful...
It's hard to believe, but you actually found an oldie that I hadn't heard before. Thank you for introducing this to me. Suggestion: Just about anything from The Platters (Tony Williams era) or Sam Cooke. The Platters: The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Only You, Twilight Time, **My Prayer** , (You've Got) The Magic Touch Sam Cooke: **You Send Me** , Chain Gang, Cupid, Don't Know Much About History, Another Saturday Night, For Sentimental Reasons (try not to overlook that all of his Gospel songs with the Soul Stirrers are good too)
I cant believe it! This is one of my favourite songs, which i have been requesting for time. And ive only gone and missed it! 😮. BTW, its a hard G in Elgins. 😊❤
Here's one out of the box for you from the musical Showboat, which first came out in 1928. It has been sung by a lot of female singers. Take your pick, though might suggest Ava Gardner simply because of the acting and colour. It's called Can't help lovin' dat man of mine.
The Elgins were a minor Motown group, but made some great records. The lead singer is Saundra Mallett......later replaced by Yvonne Vernee. Try their version of "Put yourself in my Place"......you will like that. Other Motown artists that are worth checking out are Edwin Starr, The Monitors, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, Junior Walker & the All Stars....many more too.
The best Motown song ever together with this old heart of mine my brother in law had them played at his funeral he was a Motown nut , God bless you Dave holloway 😢 KEEP ON DANCING MATE (BRISTOL)
You need to react to more Northern Soul. Do I love you (Indeed I Do) by Frank Wilson one of my favourites!! Plus "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones and "I Want My Baby Back by Stevie Wonder, "Just Walk In My Shoes by Gladys Knight & The Pips (one of my personal faves!), "At Last" by Marvin Gaye, "The Pain Gets A Little Deeper" by Darrow Fletcher and many more!
In 1957 Jimmie Rodgers had 2 songs hit #1 on the charts Honeycomb and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine Beautiful love songs, beautiful voice. Amber you will love these. NOTE - do not confuse him with another singer of the same name from the 1920/1930 time frame.
As long as I’ve been around I have not heard the song thank you for turning me onto it. Love the 60’s sound of Motown! Gladys Knight has her background singers the Pips who are men
If you both Jay and Amber want a beautiful female voice from the 50's, go listen to The Chantels singing Maybe. Arlene Smith is the lead singer and she has one of the most beautiful voices ever. Anyone on here watching this video who is from back then know who I'm talking about. Please, others on here who know of The Chantels, ask Jay and Amber to react to them
Another group ..are the Superbs..they had hit called , " Baby All the Time" Female lead w/male background singers..There's always Gladys Knight & the Pips ..who you previewed before..
Here's Female singer for Friday. This is something from 2004 to react to, "Joss Stone". She was about 21 at the time she did this and was a skinny, white, hippie that has the voice of Aretha Franklin. I think she actually sang at a special on TV for Aretha years back. I don't think she expected such a voice out of this skinny little hippie that is alway bare foot on stage. Here's a sample: ruclips.net/video/UOUE-9BSP4I/видео.html
Classic Motown group. By the way, Gladys Knight and Tina Turner were contemporaries of the Elgins. Gladys Knights first release, was "Letter Full Of Tears" in 1959.
Ok. I'm going to post this again. There is a stellar #1 smash hit by a very talented black woman with a killer voice the squad has overlooked. Fontella Bass was from a musical family. She recorded over many years and issued a number of hits, none bigger than "Rescue Me', for which she was denied her writing credit by Chess Records and much of her royalties. She moved to Paris with her husband Lester Bowie where she recorded albums with Bowie and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The 'Theme De YoYo' remains a cult classic. She retired to raise a family and did later Gospel recordings and eventually toured Europe with her younger brother, the remarkable David Peaston. '60's recordings and vids of 'Rescue Me' are easy to find. The song featured in many covers and in several movies such as "Sister Act' and 'I, Robot'. I recommend though checking out this remarkable version sung by Fontella on the fantastic UK TV program "Night Music' circa 1988 backed by David Sanborn on sax and a smoking hot backup band. ruclips.net/video/5oSjZh2D7CE/видео.html
Absolutely right, John! For many many years after it's release I thought that Fontella's "Rescue Me" never seemed to age. I think it could have been released well into the 70s and been a hit.
Bonnie Pointer( one time member of Pointer Sisters) had a huge hit with a disco version of this circa 79. She also did a shuffle version that was similar to this version on the same album
Another number 1 song with a female singer with backup male vocalists. Check out "Easier Said Than Done" by the Essex. They were in the Marines when they recorded this.
Suggestions: Trace Adkins - ‘Arlington’ (Country,) Chris Janson - ‘Drunk Girl’ (Country,) Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You’ (Country,) Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’ (Fm Fri,) Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing’ (Yacht Rock,) Los Lonely Boys - ‘Heaven’ (Pop/Latin(?),) Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’ (Fm Fri,) Whitney Houston - ‘I Have Nothing’ (Fm Fri,) Jason Aldean - ‘Dirt Road Anthem’ (Country,) Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ (Folk,) Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’ (Pop,) Toby Keith - ‘I Ain’t As Good As I Once Was’ (Country,) Danielle Bradbery - ‘Stop Dragging Your Boots’ (Country,) Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ (Fm Fri)

Boy oh boy does this track bring back memories... just a pure soul classic from a great age in music ..I have all these songs on a hard drive all 43.000 ageless tracks took me 45yrs+ to collect but have given me endless hours of pleasure hope when you're both my age you'll look back and feel the same ....bear hugs from Dublin Ireland...
I never knew the Elgins were the first to come out with this song. I always thought it was Bonnie Pointer (one of the original Pointer Sisters- before going solo) from 1979. It was a big disco hit. Either way both versions are great to listen to!!
What have here is just purely talent. They were just fabulous. You here the voices singing with music as back-up.
One of my Favorite Female Trio songs from the past is from "The Three Degrees" - "When Will I See You Again". Love this song, could you do this one ?
And also their song with Earth, Wind & Fire, "Boogie Wonderland".
They have one other great classic tune, which is "Darling Baby". Great tune, and a very sweet love song.
Haven't heard this one in a minute...love the bass part on this one..thank y'all for bringing this one back to us
This is what I know as a beach music song.
A new group for me, too. I loved it, thank you.
Great song! I've never heard it before! 😃
I enjoy the beat , singin her heart out ! Enjoying this , thank. You guys ! 😍😍
This is the only song by it's title that I remember by the Elgin's & it was a favorite if mine.
Gladys Knight also had men as her back up when she first started.
There are many girl groups as well and female solo artist.
Martha & the Vandellas
Mary Wells
The Marvelettes
Brenda Holloway
The Chiffons
The Crystals
Fontella Bass
The Shirrells
The Supremes
Connie Francis, a beautiful voice. I was very young listening to these females artist but this young woman brought tears to my eyes, her voice was so beautiful.
Patty LaBelle & the Blue Bells,
Song titled "Down The Aisle" was thee wedding song of the 60's. Please react to this song.
Patti Drew, Tell Him, one of my favs
Betty Wright
Tammi Terrell
Candi Station
Kim Weston
Betty LaVette
Betty Everett
Tina Marie, not 60's but deserves a mention.
Brenda and the Tabulations
Dee Dee Sharp
Denise La Salle
So many more.
So grateful that there is live video of this time period. So sweet.
If you're into the love songs from the 60's, listen to any song by Bread. David Gates has such a voice.
Bread was more of a 70s group (they started in 68 if memory serves and had their first hit in 69 with It Don't Matter to Me but you are right that David Gates' voice is. amazing
IF by Bread
You would love the Marvallettes, they had so many hits in the 60's too " when you're young and in love " is a great one ❤️❤️
I remember this from when I was a young teen .... very Motown type sound, which was the soundtrack to my early love life (such as it was)
Until a few years ago I swore this was the Pointer Sisters.
Love the suits on the back up singers. Tons of good suggestions. The sound and look of the day. Great choice on this one. Thanks
You two are a perfectly matched pair!
🎉🎉CONGRATS!! 200,000 SUBS!! WELCOME TO THE FAM!!🎉🎉😁😁❣️❣️😁😁
This is definitely in my top 10 of Motown tracks ,they weren't the most well known artists on the Motown label but this song is HEAVEN !! :)
Haven't heard this song in so so long. Thanks
Congratulations on hitting 200K subscribers. Quite an accomplishment.
Music has both continuity and evolution. You can trace contemporary music back to the 20s ragtime, 30s and 40s swing and jazz, 50s rock...etc.
Totally. Each new thing influences the next new thing.
One of my favourite songs from my youth, jeez I'm old 😊
You guys should definitely check out Barbra Lynn's "You'll Lose A Good Thing" from her 1966 appearance on The Beat.
Another Motown Masterpiece
Oh yeah now your taking me back to a better time 😋😍✌💞
It's hard to believe, but you actually found an oldie that I hadn't heard before. Thank you for introducing this to me. Suggestion: Just about anything from The Platters (Tony Williams era) or Sam Cooke.
The Platters: The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Only You, Twilight Time, **My Prayer** , (You've Got) The Magic Touch
Sam Cooke: **You Send Me** , Chain Gang, Cupid, Don't Know Much About History, Another Saturday Night, For Sentimental Reasons (try not to overlook that all of his Gospel songs with the Soul Stirrers are good too)
I cant believe it! This is one of my favourite songs, which i have been requesting for time. And ive only gone and missed it! 😮. BTW, its a hard G in Elgins. 😊❤
I love this kind of music
I love this song. I forgot it, this brings back memories 😊
Great Great Song!!!!
Here's one out of the box for you from the musical Showboat, which first came out in 1928. It has been sung by a lot of female singers. Take your pick, though might suggest Ava Gardner simply because of the acting and colour. It's called Can't help lovin' dat man of mine.
Love this song
There have been some really heart-felt love songs since the '50s and '60s. For example, "Love Song" by The Cure. It's just beautiful.
Oh this takes me back.......lovely song, same era as Band of Gold by Freda Payne......huge hit in the UK.
The music in this song sounds so much like the Supremes Where Did Our Love Go. So close
I forgot i enjoy the braids , wish i could put those in my hair ! Amber they are awesome ! 😍😍
The 50s and 60s were the best. Something special in the atmosphere they created.
In 1957 Jimmie Rodgers had 2 songs hit #1 on the charts
Honeycomb and
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine
Beautiful love songs, beautiful voice. Amber you will love these.
NOTE - do not confuse him with another singer of the same name from the 1920/1930 time frame.
As long as I’ve been around I have not heard the song thank you for turning me onto it. Love the 60’s sound of Motown! Gladys Knight has her background singers the Pips who are men
I always thought this was a Pointer Sisters original -- I learned something. Never heard of The Elgins. Great reaction.
If you both Jay and Amber want a beautiful female voice from the 50's, go listen to The Chantels singing Maybe. Arlene Smith is the lead singer and she has one of the most beautiful voices ever. Anyone on here watching this video who is from back then know who I'm talking about. Please, others on here who know of The Chantels, ask Jay and Amber to react to them
Another group ..are the Superbs..they had hit called , " Baby All the Time"
Female lead w/male background singers..There's always Gladys Knight & the Pips ..who you previewed before..
Don't forget Glady's Knight and the Pips. She is the lead singer and the Pips are her back-up. They started in 1952.
Here's Female singer for Friday. This is something from 2004 to react to, "Joss Stone". She was about
21 at the time she did this and was a skinny, white, hippie that has
the voice of Aretha Franklin. I think she actually sang at a special on
TV for Aretha years back. I don't think she expected such a voice out of
this skinny little hippie that is alway bare foot on stage. Here's a sample:

Amber, he's on to something. I think you would love her...
Love her performance with LeAnn Rimes on “Crossroads”. So exhilarating
One of my old mans favourites. ✌🏻frm Leeds, England
Congratulations on the 200k
Great song .. lots of AM radio play .. you’ll like Heaven Must be Missing an Angel by Tavares
Another fave Elgins hit is "Darlin Baby"
Bonnie Pointer( one time member of Pointer Sisters) had a huge hit with a disco version of this circa 79. She also did a shuffle version that was similar to this version on the same album
Another number 1 song with a female singer with backup male vocalists. Check out "Easier Said Than Done" by the Essex. They were in the Marines when they recorded this.

Everyone has suggested some awesome songs and groups, but I would like to suggest Party Lights by Claudine Clark and Leader of the Pack by the Shangri-Las. Oh yes, you've heard Soft Cell's cover of Tainted Love, you should hear the original by Gloria Jones! Also, listen to Baby It's You by Smith, that girl can SANG!
Check out ‘The Honeycombs’ who’s song ‘Have I The Right’ who had a female drummer in the 60’s
