I have a Great card trick that I've never seen on RUclips. I would love to show you and would love your opinion on how to control a card to a certain position
I made the cards, had some difficulty with the handling until I applied a roughing stick to middle of the appropriate faces/backs to allow a smooth spread just by holding the packet in the middle and spreading that way, thanks Lloyd!
I don't agree that the Elmsley count looks unnatural in twisting the aces because the twist was designed to get you in the perfect position for each Elmsley count. There's obviously a trade off between tricks being visual and being examinable.
That's the downfall of thinking like a magician, unnaturally. Hand four cards to a lay person and ask them to count them. They won't do anything like an Elmsley Count at all. It's just so odd to do. They just spread them and count four. We have to remember that just because some magicians say an unnatural move is natural, doesn't make it so. My take on what the word 'Natural' means in the context of magic; to me, it means handling objects like a regular person. Not how all other magicians do. And sometimes, that means tearing up the rule book. Which is a good thing, more often than not.
@@LloydB My definition of natural is a believable way that someone who is skilled at handling cards would do something. The twist results in the cards being at your fingertips so you're very limited in how you can move the cards. You're also not just counting four cards with the Elmsley in twisting the aces, you're openly doing sleight of hand to turn one of the aces turn over each time.
@@Arleeensatxho I fairness most laymen do everything awkwardly with cards. I also find it funny when magician pretend that laymen never want to examine the cards. I think this is a great trick for video and in fairness if the trick was perfect it wouldn't be free on RUclips.
Love it! Looks so visual! If by "2024" you mean "social media" then this has a home. But I would say that Lee Asher's still holds up in 2024 when done correctly and can be fully examined. Peeps will want to see them cards.
Lee Asher’s is incredible! Doesn’t tick the boxes that I personally have but it’s absolutely right at the top of the mountain for the ungimmicked versions. I’ve been having too much fun performing this one in person. I just switch out the cards at the end with duplicates on the bottom of the tabled deck.
Lloyd, I have a mind-blowing card trick that I've never seen any magician do on RUclips. I would love to show you and i would appreciate your opinion on how to control a card to a certain position
Do you believe that a double-facer King where one face is gimmicked in the style of FLAP 2.0 would allow to just change it in full view (in initial config) and turn over to show all four are facing the same way now? And then do the switch. I get you can't just teach Hondo Chen's work for free, though. :P Lovely visual, inventive gimmick.
Because you don’t actually perform for people in the real world, you’ve totally missed the point of the original handling, which can be done anywhere with real cards, it’s examinable (not that it has to be) and the counts are totally motivated. This sort of thing is great for an instagram reel. No one would perform it in the real world for real people.
I see where you’re coming from but since I DO and have performed this in the real world, I feel qualified to respond. The original plot for Twisting the Aces is great but the method for it is weak. No lay person would ever count four cards like that. And if you don’t believe me, hand people 4 cards and ask them to count them. So from the get go, the entire handling is suspicious. If your audience feels something is weird and unnatural, then YOU become the gimmick. Thus, your job as a magician has failed. I recently wrote about the purists mentality. Some magicians think that everything you do should be gimmickless. But the truth is; the best method is the one which gives your audience the maximum feeling of magic. For me, with this plot; the bizarre false counts, the un-visual nature and the over abundance of sleights makes the original method a non-starter. When I actually perform this for people, having a simple switch at the end is the smallest of trade offs in order to give them maximum effect. And since I’ve performed both the original method and this, I can tell you hand on heart that this illicit’s stronger, longer lasting reactions. Try it in the real world and then come back here. Hope you enjoyed my free tutorial 🙂
@@LloydB And you honestly think people would count four cards by awkwardly sliding them back in a row like you’re doing consistently in this? Seek out Michael Close’s essay on motivating sleight of hand, it’s in Workers. You can’t criticise Twisting The Aces (which admittedly isn’t a brilliant trick) and then come up with something that isn’t as good.
I've read it, it's a great essay. I chose to hold the cards in that position purely for aesthetic reasons. The good thing about this gimmick is that you can also spread the cards out in a fan orientation and still executer the changes. But I chose the backwards spread because I thought it looked cleaner and prettier. But yeah, if you prefer the fan handling, you can do that too. So it's a win win 🙂
the thread that you use and that most magicians use is the worst in terms of quality and invisibility, it makes me laugh when I see that everyone uses this one even though there is much better quality, the one I use is thinner and invisible
This looks great on camera but is sooooo unpractical 😢. You’ve taken an impromptu trick and gimmicked it to the max. And the cards look too thick. Btw there is nothing wrong with the original.
Maybe for you, but not for me. That's the great thing about Magic. What doesn't suit one person, will be gold to someone else. I love performing this version as it ticks many of the boxes that the original fails to do so for me. Hope you enjoyed this free tutorial :)
I’m with you Lloyd on twisting the aces. I use gimmicks for my versions . But I just know there r prob a ton of purists/traditionalists out there that luv impromptu . But to me as u said it’s all about what suits the performer best .
Fully agree. I actually write about the purist mentality in my new book. My personal belief is that we should always put our spectator first. So whatever method gives them the strongest experience of magic, that's what we should utilise. Sometime it needs a gimmick, sometimes it doesn't. For me Twisting the Aces is weakest with the ungimmicked version, for obvious reasons, so I'll always opt to put my audience first.
@@LloydBMy opinion has nothing to do with being a purist. I use gimmicks all the time if they make the effect stronger without making it clunky. Like I said before this is not practical. Too many gimmicks for such a simple effect. You could probably use 1 gimmick to achieve the same effect. Just my 2 cents.
