I find this particularly problematic when he's being sociopathic in Season 8 because when Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy or Matt Smith were doing similar scenes, they balanced them out with their bizarre fashion senses and eccentric personalities. Capaldi was acting like any human sociopath which made his poor treatment of Clara more egregious, to a point where I wouldn't have minded if she had gone through with her threat to slap him into his next regeneration in Kill the Moon. If Matt Smith left Clara under the guise of "respecting" her, he'd be smart enough to remind us that this is an alien who doesn't fully understand humans instead of a human who just sees other people as beneath him. He would have responded like he did when Craig was annoyed with him in The Lodger by asking "What have I done wrong?" whereas Capaldi gave the impression that he was aware of what he did wrong but either didn't care or just thought Clara was being childish. On the other end of the spectrum is Whittaker, who's unable to balance out her over-the-top scenes with the moments where the Doctor shows age and power. To be fair, this is partially because Chris Chibnall is a terrible writer though. If Whittaker was one of the youngest Doctors, one who had not yet experienced the Time War, and had writers who actually knew what they were doing, she could get away with showing a clear lack of confidence and experience. However, she's the oldest incarnation to date, so she has no excuse for relying completely on the Doctor's childish side without bringing the knowledge, experience and inner strength to the table. Matt Smith is the definitive Doctor in my opinion. He's able to balance between those two extremes perfectly and I wish he'd stayed for at least one more season. He's the only Doctor whom I wanted to see beating Tom Baker's 7 year record, plus he and Jenna Coleman didn't get a full series together, which I find upsetting because they bounced off each other at least as well as Matt and Karen Gillan did, if not even better. Peter Capaldi should have taken more time to grow as an actor before taking on the Doctor because in Season 8, he clearly wasn't sure how to handle the role (despite being a lifelong fan and 25 years older than Matt Smith, which just goes to show that sometimes experience is no substitute for raw talent), something he was probably aware of because he auditioned as a companion. Even David Tennant, my second favourite Doctor, leaned more towards the Doctor's human side than his alien side while Smith did an impressive tightrope walk between them.
The worst part about "The Doctor, doctor, fun", is that he then proceeded to have the least fun he possibly could have had and I was devastated at the end of the episode :') That episode was so dark, I loved it a lot tho
