Hey, don't forget to put the band Queen and their song Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen of course is one of the greatest bands of rock but Bohemian Rhapsody that was a risk they took. Those executive people didn't think it would work since it was too long and too strange. Oh my God they were so wrong. Since it's got everything up your alley including an ability to have different interpretation on lyrics, then listen to the artists reasons for the lyrics and you'll have aha moment. They think like you. Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, next on your list? You can thank me later. Lol
"Working Man" is the song that turned them from a struggling band to a household name. check it out. (the studio version not the reggae version they sometimes do in concert.
Agreed, but I'm so mixed about that one. I agree that the intro won't make sense to new listeners, but that middle instrumental breakdown in Cleveland? That closeup between Alex and Geddy shredding? That belongs in the Smithsonian!
"Red Barchetta" has an amazing riff you won't be able to get out of your head for a few weeks after the first time you hear it. One of the greatest driving songs ever. It still gets played in heavy rotation on Classic Rock FM radio stations to this very day.
I couldn't be happier that you enjoyed Tom Sawyer. I'm not a Rush super-fan, but they are excellent as is Tom Sawyer. Based on your appreciation of themes and vivid lyrics, I recommend Closer to the Heart.
If you recommend Closer to the Heart I can understand why you're knot a Rush super-fan. You probably haven't seriously listened to their last and underrated album, "Clockwork Angels." Even Geddy Lee, bassist/lead vocalist said in an interview, "I believe this album is our best work ever!"
You should definitely watch the official music video. You'd see Geddy Lee playing both the bass guitar and the keyboards. They produced amazing sound for a three-piece band!

They grow on you. But I promise once you hear the instrumental ‘YYZ’ by them you will be sold. They have made some of the best instrumentals of all time
The bass line is amazing, the drummer is one of the greatest in the world, and the guitarist is so underrated!

Neil Peart, the drummer, is considered one of if not the greatest rock drummer of all time. He was also an incredible lyricist with seriously thoughtful things to say. We all miss this great musician. Try Spirit of Radio next please.
look at Xanadu from the Exit stage left 1981 show... just amazing masterpiece from Rush... it's based on the Kubla Khan, a poem from Samuel Taylor Coleridge of 1797. Look at the 1981 show to really understand the tallent of these 3 guys performing live
I saw the Moving Pictures concert live in the early 80s. To this day it was one of the best concerts I ever saw. What you hear on the studio version is what you got live. No back up musicians, just 3 guys making all that sound. There were times when Geddy Lee was singing, playing foot pedals, synth and bass at the same time. Neil Peart's drum kit was enormous and Alex Lifeson injecting unique and unexpected guitar work . I remember to this day the body, heart and spirit rush I felt at that concert, in particular the song Witch Hunt, the sound filled my body, it was haunting (great song that nobody reacts to). The whole Moving Pictures album is gold. I really like watching young people discovering gems.
"Moving Pictures" is a masterpiece. There are 4-5 tracks from this album you'd be happy you checked out... this is RUSH at their creative best.
That second half is 🔥
There's no other Rush track quite like Tom Sawyer, this one was a one off experiment and stands on its own. But the Moving Pictures album has other great cuts. I would recommend the final song Vital Signs, it also has clever use of synths interplaying with bass and rhythm guitar, and the development of the drum patterns are something to behold!
When you find time for a new band, you need to try Steely Dan. Best song to start is Reelin in the Years.
And the Aja and Gaucho song lists. ❤️
Yes, more Rush is always a good thing. You so need to hear their amazing 2112 suite, it was a whole album side, about 20 minutes of them at their very best. Do the studio original, an amazing mix, it will freak you out!!! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I grew up on Prog Rock so I love all the change ups but for someone who hasn't it takes a bit of time and Rush has the smoothest transitions.

There's been some great suggestions already for the next Rush track, but I think you'd get a good kick out of "The Trees". Their older stuff like "Working Man" and "Fly by Night" are more hard rock, so you'd like those, but The Trees still isn't too "prog" and you'll like the lyrics.
Neil said he loved playing Tom Sawyer because it's so hard to get right. For him drumming is a musical instrument where each drum hit is designed to support the tune. In some songs (Xanadu, 2112, etc.) he also plays the xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells, wind chimes, wood blocks, cowbells, and more! In later years he helped push the technology of sampling where he would hit a cymbal and a trumpet sound would come out, or a gong, or whatever he wanted. For a total Neil experience watch his solo in Frankfurt... mind blowing!
Yeah, this is the song I think of when I think of Rush.

Only Band in the world to dedicated a Album to a Radio Station. WDVE out of Cleveland, Ohio. They were the only Station to play RUSH in the USA. The rest is history.

You’ve experienced samples of Rush from 1980-1982.
Sticking in that timeframe, I will suggest Freewill, Limelight or The Analog Kid.

You should watch the official video for Tom Sawyer. We get to see them playing the recorded version. It's quite remarkable.
Rush is unique. It takes a while to soak it all in. Their talent was unmatched and they didn't follow any other group or act as they played from the heart, and it showed.
Rush’s music gets better with each listen. The complexities make more sense the more you listen 👍🏻

Here’s what there is to get about Rush. No expectations beyond hearing three incredibly talented musicians who, musically, went all over the map in terms of styles, sounds and flavors, and did so with conviction and without interference. They did exactly what they wanted to creatively, and hopped others would like it to. Turns out, millions did, and gave them a 40+ year career, top 20 rock albums throughout the 80’s 90’s and 2000’s. Enjoy the ride. It’s a long and glorious one!
Great tune by far. Seen them 3 time. Was so Awsome I was speechless a the show. I wish I'd had 4 eyes. Lol. To take in what 3 of the best musicians could pull off was off the hook!!
Rush has been a fav of mine since the late 70's. Drove my other metal friends crazy with them... till they got it. RIP Professor... glad my whole family got to see R40 with me! Btw Tom Sawyer was a character, and book by Mark Twain (Samuel Clements).

Working Man is the song that made me first take notice of RUSH and really start exploring their music. 11-year-old me wore out my brothers tape on my Walkman listening to that track!

Free Will is one that you may really like a lot, exceptional lyrics and great bass in particular. One of my favorite tracks of theirs.

Check out their “YYZ Live in Rio” video-it’s an instrumental like you never have seen nor will see again. The audience actually sings along to a song with no words, and you get to see their musicianship on display
I got to see Rush when they toured this album as a middle schooler, @,MSG, believe this was their biggest hit. Although they were not a radio hit making band they made their bread touring continuously ..They stuck to their guns and recorded many songs that the industry could not categorize and other great songs that were too long for radio air time.

The Rush catalog is huge. You could easily listen to 20+ songs and still not get the full picture of their sound. Most fans would point you to the more popular tracks, commonly played on classic rock radio, including the three you've now listened to, Limelight, Freewill, Closer to the Heart. But I suggest also listening to some lesser known tracks such as Available Light, The Garden (off their last album), Far Cry, How it is, Ghost of a Chance,. And don't miss Witch Hunt or Mission. The list goes on, of course.
You tapped right into it, and "it" is the groove. It stands out throughout their catalog.

You GOT to check out "YYZ" Live in Rio. Watch three guys play a crowd like you've never seen. It's got to be one of the best live performances by any band ever.

The Rush will is DEEP. Try 'Limelight,' and 'The Trees.' Be prepared to be blown away, especially by the lyrics.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!

This was an absolute anthem for certain segments of young people at the time, in the way that "My Generation" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" might have been at other times...

Rush fan for three decades here. They have so many different styles over their albums. Never experienced a tighter three-piece except when I`m going for an interview hehaha
Oh, I think the tale of this kind of guy continues in their next album signals, with both new world man and the analog kid
Working Man (pre Neil) was the intro. Then 2112 hit and they blew up. Caress of Steel, not everyone’s up of tea (you’d probably like the storyline behind Bastille Day) Fly by Night (another storyline I think you might enjoy)

All of this stuff is the soundtrack of my long passed teen years in the 70’s and 80’s. Hard to pick just a couple of songs when there are so many great tracks.

I thought just another Rush reaction but I was mistaken, you paid attention to the lyrics. The two aspects of Rush that put them above most bands is their musicianship and lyrics. For a first listen, you were spot on with both aspects. Your energy and appreciation also came through during the right moments of the song, which tells me you have a good understanding of music and arrangement. Rush discography touches many genres and topics. In regards to songs you will like, I would say based on your comments, the three albums you will appreciate the most is Moving Pictures, Signals and Grace Under Pressure. Try Analog Kid and Digital man. Both songs are lyrically related, and from the same album.
To really appreciate them watch some live performances. 3 guys in a studio is entirely different than in concert. Saw them several times in high school. You need to watch them, and explore their earlier stuff also.
You may be interested in trying some of The Alan Parsons Project. In particular, their first album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Edgar Allen Poe" as each track is based on a separate Poe story. Maybe start with "The Raven"?
2112 is a masterpiece. Side 2 has so many flavors it's a great way to try the Rush buffet!

great review but you really need to see the songs you've reviewed live - they are a brilliant live band - live instrumentals like - La Villa Strangiato, YYZ live in Rio, Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone etc. Working Man live in Cleveland, The Garden live in Dallas, so many others...

Enjoy your very observant reactions as usual and thank you so much for filing noticing the bass. So many people that do reactions just skip over it even when it's the prominent thing. The end of this reaction in the song reminded me so much of my first time in 9th grade when I ever heard Rush 2112, side a, it's that whole musical Symphony or whatever or Opera I suppose cuz there are a lot of lyrics for most of it. I'm sure you've heard a lot a lot about it but you really owe it to yourself to check it out. It's a few years before this so they're much harder Rock and less on the synthesizers but they are still there definitely and I feel this stuff has so much potency. Rush 2112 was the album that saved them with the record label. They were told to quit doing Progressive stuff and do something more easy to sell to the public, and so 2112 was to be there last chance then they totally went in the opposite direction and did exactly what they wanted to do and explored where they were at right then and it turns out it sold like crazy and the record company was shocked. So fast forward a few years and you get the songs that you've been reviewing. So this is a little before that. Inside B is worth a listen too because it's all separate individual songs, each one amazing.
You should do a review of the story-side of the Rush album 2112. It is a concept story and some amazing music.
Rush is the best at placing the listener inside the song. Good luck on your journey. Honestly, once you get them, and what they are doing, you will come to realize there are no bad Rudh songs. I would also recommend checking out some live performances. You really cannot go wrong

Love the channel. Not much into the hair metal. But RUSH kicks ass. I was always into the norm Zeppelin, Floyd and Sabbath. But was introduced to RUSH freshman year after transferring schools. Knew RUSH but didn't know RUSH until then. Now you can classify me as a RUSH head Now and have been for 35 years. Check out the 1st album. It's really down to earth and just great rock-n-roll. Thanks again for doing a great job

I haven't listened to a lot of Rush, but they use incredibly complex rhythms and melodies, which gives them a lot of room for expression. Their songs get better with each listen.

A good portion of Rush's discography are influenced from whatever Neil was reading at the time. Two epic pieces 2112 and Xanadu are both based on stories. Well 2112 is based on Ayn Rand writings, mostly 'Anthem' and Xanadu is based on an unfinished poem, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge called Kubla Khan. There is also a novel written by Kevin J Anderson (and Neil Peart) called Clockwork Angels. This story is also told on their last album with the same name.

For more story-telling, check out: Bytor and the Snow-dog, Natural Science, Xanadu, and Cygnus X-1 (for which we had to wait for the next album to find out what happens to our Hero!) Also, the entire Moving Pictures album is flawless - every single cut of it is amazing.... The rabbit-hole is deep, and you need to DO IT!
It may be that your preferences in Rush songs are a bit album-dependent -- sort of like the Who are with you. For other suggestions from Rush, other tracks on this album that you'd probably like are the next 3 on side 1: Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight. Especially Limelight. You may also enjoy the closing track on side 2 -- Vital Signs.
Two other albums that I think he'd like are Hemispheres and Signals, and possibly a couple songs from Power Windows and from Presto.
