Tool are insane with the atmosphere they create in their music. Every song of theirs has it's own feel to it that is always recognizable as 'Tool', but still unique in its own right. Imo if it's atmosphere you want you gotta check out Third Eye, from the same album as 46&2. The whole album, Aenima, was dedicated to Bill Hicks, and they play a part of his stand-up at the beginning of Third Eye.

You had me at "lyricism, atmosphere and musicianship"!! So many reactors just listen to the music and never dive into the meaning of the songs..Tool is a deep band (as is Pink Floyd and so many others). IMHO, in a lot of songs, if you don;t get into lyrics you are missing out on a LOT! and musicianship~!??? this band oozes it! I'm a 58yo, brought up on blues based guitar driven rock (I also dabble in metal , right now obsessed with Ukrainian metal band Jinjer and love the heavier bands) but also can listen to anything from Beethoven onward! lol. I will be subscribing to your channel! (as a side note...of course you must listen to Pneuma featuring Danny Carey on drums and there is a cool duet with Maynard and Tori Amos doing her song "Muhammad my friend")

Syed….Hi..Helene here. Like Nightwish, Tool was another band that blew me away about three years ago….that I discovered on reaction channels. The unusual time signatures grabbed me immediately, and then the sheer power of the musicianship and the lyrics had me hypnotized. The group gets MASSIVE respect from me. Many people try to describe them by saying to imagine that Black Sabbath (or some say Zeppelin) and Rush, had a love child….with the ability to create an atmosphere like Pink Floyd does thrown in. In other words, the rhythms and complexity suggest prog influences, the heaviness harks back to earliest metal influences….with lyrics about theology, psychology…….the entire width and breadth of the human experience. To me, they are progressive metal. And live, they give a totally immersive experience, in the tradition Pink Floyd. But really, Tool is unique…….in its own category, and having been with you for several weeks now, I would say they are a perfect match of band to reactor! I hope you continue with them…….Try Schism or The Pot or Pneuma.

TOOL is their own genre. Every song they do has "atmosphere", layers upon layers of it. How 4 individuals are able to write this music is one thing, but they play it live exactly as good, some might say better, as the album recordings. They are truly a musical force. I've drawn life altering inspiration from their music since 1994.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Forty-Six & Two touches on the concept of the Shadow in Jungian psychology, which I would find fascinating if true!

I am a Tool fan to the core!! Their body of work is rivaled by no other band. The musicianship is epic and is only equalled by the poetry coming from Maynard. With that said.... You must listen to the kids doing the cover of 46 & 2. EPIC! Enjoy the rabbit hole.

Just a toe into the rabbit hole brother.
Once you’re ready to go head first: Pushit (studio), Pushit (Salival version), and The Grudge are vortices within the center of their emotional-technical peak.

I'm glad you caught on to the instrumental section being the metamorphosis, it represents the evolution and then the final part is after the change, it's even in a different time signature, if you understand that stuff. The song starts in 4/4 time and the end it's in 7/8.

i didnt catch the time signature change but i felt the emotion changing, brilliant concept to put in a song!

I’d be interested in hearing your impression of The studio version of Pushit from Arnima. To me it’s an emotionally evocative masterpiece - nothing less than symphonic rock.

Drums: Danny Carey, Guitar: Adam Jones, Base: Justin Chancellor, Vocals: Maynard James Keenan. Each of these guys are virtuosos in their craft. Many rank Danny as one of the best rock drummers ever. Maynard doesn't consider himself as a "lead" singer, but, considers his voice as a just another instrument in Tool. He places himself in the back of the group with Danny when playing live and often in shadow so you just hear his voice and don't really see him visually. I hope you are ready to go down the Tool rabbit hole. It really is a trip. Welcome.

I decided to sub because you knew about the Jungian stuff, and liking what you were listening to helped. ;)
Maynard also fronts a couple of other bands, so if you like his voice, you'll love the other bands he uses it in as well. A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Also look up "Tori Amos Maynard James Keenan Of Tool Muhammed My Friend". It's a live duet. Just wonderful stuff.
Enjoy the ride. I'm sensing that you won't be too happy having to wait to review them.

Jungian shadow integration is a fascinating concept. I always recommend the movie Blue Velvet by David Lynch to people because it’s a very interesting take on the subject, at least in my opinion
