Very moving. Focusing from the perspective of that building added real depth to this story. You are a sweet Southern Gentleman showing us a savaged community with respect, love and hope. There is honor in this work. Thank you.

I lived in this building. It was my home for several years. I am now in the process of trying to find another home. Gary was a hero the night of the storm.

You’re welcome! I wish I had videos and pictures of the building before the disaster. Unfortunately I couldn’t hardly find any on the internet. Thank you for watching!

So very sad that this happened! So many displaced people who had to leave the area and find someplace else to live. My condolences to the one woman who passed away in the apartment building or should I say my condolences to the family of the woman who passed away.

It's easy to see why most residents would think that this building was strong enough to handle just about any tornado.
But this was not just any tornado!
Gary sure saved a lot of people that night!

Excellent video. I see the room I was born in 1962. My father was a pharmacist there as well.

My thought was this. That was an old building, made of concrete and steel. It has massive damage but it was mostly left standing. Can you imagine how bad that would have been if it would have been made out of wood and vinal siding like most apartment buildings are built now; it would have been catastrophic. I imagine most of the upper floor apartments would have been gone or collapsed into the ground floor.
I hope they consider salvaging this building because if it ever happened again, I would rather people be in this kind of building than what they will likely replace it with.

At end of video he says they secured it so residents items would not be stole, they never allowed me back in to move out my items, because of the sprinklers, rain, snow, smell, and their insurance company, My personal items sit up there in that building now.

It's too bad you were notr reachable by phone. Homeland did a wonderful job of allowing us back in the building to retrieve our belongings as well as we could. Homeland took very good care of us. They had a terrific crew come in.

@@jeanrobart6111 I was in contact with Paula through out. I was not near the doors as you were on first floor. I was on second where more damage of ceiling and was told not to go in because of building being condemned.

@@jeanrobart6111 And when you say Homeland took care of 'us' that is a lie, they discarded Johnny Shreve's property, he found some of it in the parking lot, where it had laid on way to be taken to city dump. His personal info. They did NOT take care of everyone.

Gary was a true hero. If it weren’t for his efforts, so many more of our residents would not have lived to see another day. He was with my friend when she died. He did not let her die alone. This man is my hero!
