    For those that think this wallet is unwieldy huge: once they break in and get softer, they’re great front or back pocket carries. I have a heritage brown one that I’ve carried for over a year, in my front pocket, and it carries comfortably. I just received an english tan one and I forgot how bulky they feel on day one!

    Popov wallets are definitely well made and will last. I personally can't imagine packing this beast in my back pocket, but I know some people still carry trifolds. Ryan has a wallet offering for just about everyone. Great review Mark!

    Beautiful craftsmanship and materials, Popov builds bomb proof wallets. I hope it comes with some referrals to Chiropractic Clinics, or at least a handle so you can use it for carry-on, lol

    This wallet is approaching Costanza territory, but dammit I love the smell, feel, and look of a thick high quality leather. Don't even get me started on the beautiful patina this thing will have over time! Yes its thick, but worth it I think.

    Sorry for the off-topic and thank you very much for all your work.
    I discovered your channel a few months ago and it opened the fascinating world of wallets to me. I have watched many of your videos and used the comparative tool on your website but my situation is a bit particular and I thought it merits asking you directly.
    Currently, I own a monstruosity my father gifted me many years ago. I do not even know if it is a bifold, a trifold or what. It is just falling apart and it holds an absurd amount of cards.
    Due to an accident I have only one arm so my needs, when it comes to something that, in theory, should be handled with two hands, are quite particular. Zippers, for example, are a no-no for me. I live in Madrid, Spain, so I would need to carry euros. The wallet should be able to hold at least 12 cards but no coins and no receipts. Price is not a problem but it should, as I mentioned, not have zippers. I have never used pull tab but I am not sure I could operate it with just one hand. I am not clumsy really, I can play with a joystick using just one hand but no matter how skilled someone is, having to use just one hand imposes some restrictions.
    With all that in mind, does anything come to your mind as "perfect" for me? I was wondering if there was something you had not featured in your channel yet but that, now, you thought would be ideal for me.
    Thank you for your time and attention regarding this unusual request.

    Wow. I carried a tri fold for years, though probably not as nice as this one. But man, that is thick! I currently have the Mitchell leather money clip wallet, and I might be persuaded to go with a vertical style card wallet/cash wrap, but I am not going back to a tri fold.

    😆 that’s mahooosive! I’ve no argument with the leather or quality. It really is awesome. However that 1” and the large size is crazy. Who uses 5oz leather in a tri-fold? 😮

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  3 года назад +1

      It is a heavy weight leather choice.

  • @neilcard6583
    @neilcard6583 3 года назад +11

    I don't know how you can score the perception of this wallet as a 5. Yes, the leather is great quality, but... The stitching lines aren't great, the lack of any kind of burnish or finish on the edges (for this style of wallet) makes it look untidy, and don't even get me started on that horrible crumple in the leather of the billfold pocket. Obviously that won't be in every wallet, but how they would even send that to a customer in that state is beyond me. When you show the wallet from above that's the only I thing I can look at.

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  3 года назад +2

      The perception score focuses more on the company, their customer support, presence in the market, etc, than on the product. That's handled via the other elements.

    • @neilcard6583
      @neilcard6583 3 года назад +7

      @@walletopia I've just come from watching your video on the scoring system that you use, and while I disagree with the usefulness of that system I do take your point about the perception score. What I perhaps should have said is I don't know how you can possibly give this wallet a score of 5 for Quality as that is the part of the score that takes into account things like finishing of edges, stitching, and workmanship. Go to 0:26 in this video and just look at that view of the wallet. Aside from the thickness of the leather there is nothing about what you're seeing there that screams quality to me. By your own scoring system 5 is meant to be the highest possible standards and this wallet is far from that.

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  3 года назад +2

      @@neilcard6583 One of the limitations of the scoring system is that it's set up to score against only the wallet being reviewed, not compared to other wallets, which is what we do naturally. To provide a basis for proper comparison and the ability to create a basis for "like" or related wallets, I've been creating some data clusters for similar features of wallets that will demonstrate a better basis. That'll be added to the Explore site. But to your original question, about the :40 minute mark I mention that I picked this wallet up in Popov's kickstarter for this wallet and since that version 1 launch the quality has been very good. I absolutely could have expressed that more, as the sample I had did have some issues with some puckering in the leather, but all of Popov's edge burnishing is the same which is more a preference than a demonstration or good or poor quality. Personally, I like a really polished edge like we see with Benjamin Bott, but when a maker sticks to a particular style, that demonstrates consistency and becomes part of their brand.

    • @neilcard6583
      @neilcard6583 3 года назад +5

      @@walletopia I think you've mentioned before that the score is only about the wallet being reviewed, and not to be used as a comparison to other wallets. Frankly, that just seems illogical. Does that mean a wallet that gets a Quality score of 5 in one video may be of the same quality as a one that scores a 3 in another video? If that's the case then having a scoring system at all is pointless, and if it's not the case then you have to accept that scores are (at least to some extent) comparative. And I would have to point out that your argument that scores shouldn't be used to compare wallets is somewhat at odds with the fact that you have a "Wallet Rankings" section on the site that is sorted by score, and that the explore.walletopia graph is plotted as price vs ranking. Both of those are entirely meaningless if scores aren't meant to be comparitive.
      With respect to the individual Popov wallet that you reviewed here... Normally if a reviewer has a product with a flaw they will mention the flaw (perhaps describing any mitigating circumstance for it) rather than just completely ignore it. You may have experience of other Popov wallets that lead you to believe that they would no longer put out something like this (which would be a reasonable thing to mention in the review) but as a viewer I expect that what I'm hearing from you matches the product I can actually see on the screen (ostensibly the one being reviewed), and that certainly wasn't the case here.
      You've often declared in the past that we can trust your reviews to be unbiased because you pay for all the wallets yourself, but I think you are perhaps ignoring other biases you may have, particularly in cases where you like the story of the brand or company. Increasingly it appears that you are taking on the role of cheerleader rather than reviewer.

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  3 года назад +2

      @@neilcard6583 fair enough, I could be including some bias because I do know the makers better than most people so there's a consistency that I see and thus am not too concerned if I come across a miss, but to your point, I agree I could have been more vocal about what I was seeing there. Regarding the ranking, the problem still exists that in the top down rankings, they still represent their scores, but if you think a slim card wallet is a fair comparison to a large trifold like the Popov, they're not, thus the need to sort them with "like" types to see a proper comparison in the list. What we see there is a macro version of trying to compare for example, a Trayvax Contour to the Fusion 4 wallet (that review is coming it's basically a large CNC'ed block of aluminum), it just doesn't work mentally to compare because they're so different. Thus the move I'm making to create data cluster relationships that can be used to understand how "like" products really compare in the same sphere.
