Terry and his wife Susan Jacks had a hit as The Poppy Family - Which Way You Goin' Billy. Billy was Susan's brother's name and that replaced "Buddy" in the song. In 2010, Billy donated a kidney to his sister Susan to save her life. I like Terry's version of Season in the Sun better than all the rest. Three modulations up in pitch in this song. I don't know of any modern song doing that. Yes, the sound is very bubblegum for the message.

Congratulations to Nick, Ryan, and Ty for achieving the incredible accomplishment of over 45,000 subscribers. It's not right for me to take any credit for noticing and posting this info in the comments section first because at least 1 other viewer beat me to it in an earlier video. I cannot imagine how proud the 3 of you must be to watch the channel that all of you have put so much time and energy towards getting within reach of 50,000 subscribers. What is also so impressive to me is how it was 1 YEAR AGO at this time that the 3 of you did a "20,000 Subscriber Q&A" video. So if my public school math is right, your channel got more than double as many subscribers in this last year than in the first 2 years of the channel's existence. Beyond the quantifiable success and the continual positive feedback from viewers in the comments section of videos, the thing that each of you can take the most pride in is that you've had a vision for the channel and there has been little to no wavering from that vision. I was first exposed to reaction channels by a big-time music fan buddy of mine within the last year. He would send me clips of these other channel hosts that didn't seem to know what they were talking about, got simple information about the music wrong, or they came off as such an expert in the field ("An Opera Singer/Teacher Breaks Down Steve Perry's Vocal Range In Excruciatingly Minute Detail" in a 35 or 40 minute video) that most everything that they said went over my head. However, the worst have been the hosts that are simply only doing the videos to get the subscribers, "likes," and comments to boost their channel's profile/earning potential. These are the folks that will do a quick introduction, play the song (rarely stopping it to make comments or analyze anything), and give a few general statements at the end how they "loved the song" without providing any real context. I guess it must have been RUclips's algorithm that introduced me to your channel when I was looking for a reasonable reaction to a song whose name I don't even recall anymore. However, I do remember watching that video and enjoyed the format/style/chemistry that the three of you had clearly developed. Then, it was a 2nd video. Same positive result. 3rd video. Again, same thing. It was at that point that I realized this was the music reaction/review channel that I'd been hoping to find. 3 friends with a collective great interest in music, breaking down songs from all genres and time periods based on what they knew, and doing it in a personable way that shows the viewers you care about what you're doing. I know Nick has mentioned at least once or maybe more that the channel's "mission statement" isn't to simply pick the biggest artists/groups and only do their most popular hits. It would be very easy to take that approach, which quite a few reaction channels have done and more power to them for getting a major number of suscribers. In the end, the 3 of you are showing that a RUclips channel can maintain the integrity of its purpose and still significantly succeed. So beyond the question of what song will be the next up on the "one hit wonder" marathon, the next really important question that the 3 of you have to think about is what the format and nature of the 50,000 suscriber celebration video will be. 😀 Congratulations again, guys. It's a pleasure to follow your channel and watch it hopefully continue to grow at this astounding pace in the future.

In 1974 I was in the 8th Grade, it was, like most teenagers, a very interesting and pivotal year for me and they chose this song as the theme for our class and my reaction was nearly identical to yours. As the years, decades, have passed I have learned to appreciate the song... sentimental... still a bit depressing and now more so with the passing of so many family and friends since then yet it no longer has an automatic "change the station/skip this song please" affect.

I was in kindergarten when this song was a hit and I loved it and memorized it word-for-word and would sing it all the way thru for anyone that would listen. But yes, it does have a juvenile nursery rhyme sing-songiness to it. Being a little kid and being the early 1970s it wasn't seen that way as much. I believe it went to #1. It was a different time, what can I say? Brady Bunch and plaid pants and sunny Saturday cartoons.

On first listen it is a typical 70's "happy" song. Then I heard your break down... "Circle of little girls" 😂. You are allowed to laugh and have fun. It is your interpretation (no need to explain). Agreed with you it is too contradictory of how it sounds and it's meaning. This is a mood to hear thing... If it comes on the radio.

Based on the comments from the guys in the video and some viewers posts in the comments section, I started to wonder if the vocals were arranged as they were for a specific reason. The guys were talking about how the chorus sounds child-like (I believe it might have been Ryan that said the chorus sounded like a "nursery rhyme"). Several posters mentioned their first exposure to the song was at a very young age, especially those that liked the song (at least at that time). This all got me to wondering if perhaps the vocals in the chorus were arranged such as a way to introduce the idea of death to children. As most parents, guardians, family members, and teachers know, explaining death to a child is one of the most difficult parts of teaching children about the world. My thought was perhaps the song was meant as a way to "soften the blow" and make it a bit easier for parents, guardians, family members, and/or teachers to discuss the concept of someone passing away with children. In an effort to confirm or clarify this belief, I did some digging on RUclips and I found a relatively long interview that Terry Jacks did about his career and there is a sizeable section about "Seasons in the Sun." The first link above is to that interview. If someone doesn't want to watch the whole interview, it looks like the section on the song goes from the approximate 4:27 to 11:47 marks. In the effort to find the above interview, I found a short clip of an interview with Susan Jacks, Terry Jacks' wife at the time "Seasons in the Sun" was recorded. What I was fascinated to learn was that Terry Jacks was friends and had a working relationship with The Beach Boys during that period. Apparently, Terry Jacks offered "Seasons in the Sun" to The Beach Boys and the plan was for the band to record the song with Terry Jacks as the producer. Unfortunately, due to issues within the group at the time, the song was not totally finished. Yet after the short interview clip of Susan Jacks in the video, there is apparently a "demo" or unfinished version of "Seasons in the Sun" by The Beach Boys. The second link above is the Susan Jacks interview clip and version by The Beach Boys. I was also able to find a long print interview, which goes into quite a bit of detail about "Seasons in the Sun" with Terry Jacks on the website Song Facts. If there's anyone that wants to read it (as I'm not sure if RUclips will let me post a link to it), go on Song Facts and type Terry Jacks in the search box at the top of the homepage. A link should come up in the search bar that indicates #interviews: Terry Jacks (Seasons in the Sun). There is also a link above that to a profile with more info about Terry Jacks and "Seasons in the Sun." For those that might be interested, enjoy! 😀

if you'd like to give them another chance try "That's where I went wrong" or "You don't know what love is" or "Which way you going Billy". this made them not a one hit wonder group. But they were what they called "Bubblegum" music and that was a thing. Personally I liked it all, but it is harder to listen to now. and it's not for everyone.

I think you both were incrediblely polite in your comments. I, personally, have never cared for this song, and find the sing-song melody and "bubble gum rock-style" vocals annoying and childish, too. (Consider all of the great music being produced at that time!) I feel that it would have been more powerful as a poem, though not many people would have been exposed to it.

Thanks for the post. Please be aware that, when introducing the marathon, Nick mentioned that there would be "one hit wonders" that he and Ryan chose that got videos. So while viewers would have a significant say in what songs "made the cut," it wouldn't be the only way songs got on. As for your question, it appears at least two different people suggested "Seasons in the Sun" on the community message board for this marathon poll. I can't answer why that song was picked over others that might have had more support, but it was listed by more than 1 poster.

  • @user-lq4qe7pj9s

For those that didn't want "Seasons in the Sun," I'll take a share of the responsibility as I included it as the "Honorable Mention" in my list for 1970s songs on the "one hit wonder" community message board. Given the upbeat nature of the music so far, "Seasons in the Sun" is definitely (as "Bugs Bunny" might say) "a left turn to Albuquerque" when it comes to tempo and message. Beyond it being a "one hit wonder," an interesting note is that this version was adapted from a song by well-known Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel, who would later go on to influence musical superstars such as David Bowie. Besides "Seasons in the Sun," Brel's music was also translated into English and recorded by legends like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Judy Collins, Andy Willians, and Nina Simone. So while this song is unlikely to get you to tap your feet, think about dancing, and how much fun music brings to our lives, the song's original writer made more of an inpact on modern music than just a "one hit wonder."

While I'm fairly sure a few other folks suggested "Seasons in the Sun" and the guys have probably already recorded at least a week or two worth of videos, below is a list of 10 (and two Honorable Mention) uptempo "one hit wonders" to get the marathon back on the proverbial track for the guys next recording session (the songs appear below in the decade that they were released from the 1950s to 1990s):
      *"Tequila," The Champs
*The Contours, "Do You Love Me?"
*"What You Won't Do For Love" by Bobby Caldwell
*Yvonne Elliman, "If I Can't Have You" (EDIT: It should be noted, as pointed out by poster "Filthy McNasty," that Yvone Elliman achieved 2 top #15 songs ("Love Me" & a cover of "Hello Stranger") before "If I Can't Have You" was released, so Elliman would not likely be considered a "one hit wonder" in the traditional definition of the term. However, it should also be mentioned that "If I Can't Have You" went to #1, it was the last major hit that she earned, and it is the song most closely associated with Elliman's pop music career)
*"Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston
*Dexy's Midnight Runners, "Come On Eileen"
*"Don't Want To Fall In Love" by Jane Child
*Mark Morrison, "Return of the Mack"
      *"How Bizarre" by OMC
      *Chumbawumba, "Tubthumping"
*Honorable Mentions: "You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals and Dionne Ferris, "I Know"
Hopefully, any of these songs or terrific suggestions from other posters can restore the early "one hit wonder" marathon mojo if it takes a little ding from "Seasons in the Sun."

Thanks for the reply. If nothing else, I sincerely commend you for your dedication to "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. If someone were to take a more traditional definition of "one hit wonder," Dobie Gray might not qualify as he scored a top #15 song with "The In Crowd" in the mid-1960s. My understanding of the definition that was explained by the guys before and at the start of the marathon was that an artist or group could have more than one hit, if one song was significantly more successful or the artist/group is known for that specific song. To me, it's up to the guys and the viewers to make that determination but I know there a few folks in the comments section that have a more traditional view of what constitutes a "one hit wonder," so anyone suggesting "Drift Away" should be aware of the potential rebuttal. Thanks again for the reply. Good luck with your efforts to get "Drift Away" into the marathon. 😀

There were a lot of hits specifically marketed to a black audience. Sly & Family Stone
Thank You( Faletme me be mice elf) was a #1 hit in 1970 but on the" Hot Soul Charts", in other words "Black music Charts." Everytime I suggest it literally crickets. Not 1 like or comment.
If I suggest " The In Crowd" on any reaction channel maybe 1 like but doubtful.
If I suggest Drift Away always a like. 90% on here have never heard " The In Crowd". Everyone on here has heard " Drift Away".
It's quite frustrating being a huge fan of early Funk, but sadly most black music that wasn't part of the Motown marketing machine might has well not have been a hit to the majority on here.

I am late for the party, but I am going to show my age now and tell you that I still own my original copy of Time To Talk the 1963 album by the folk trio The Kingston Trio which has the original translation of "Seasons In The Sun" from the French language. The original song was told from the viewpoint of a dying man saying goodbye to his friend, his father, and his cheating wife named Francois. There is one line in the song where he says goodbye Francois, my trusted wife. Without you, I would have had a lonely life. You have had many lovers all your life. Your lover was my best friend. Think of me now and again. With your lovers everywhere, be careful because I will be there. The Kingston Trio is strictly aucustic with a stand-up bass, aucustic guitar, and occasionally a banjo. The version by The Kingston Trio is actually a little faster tempo, but the voice is not nearly as cheerful, and the overall mood of the song is darker than Terry Jacks version. I am very familiar with both versions because my wife and I were married in 1974 about the time that Terry Jacks had a hit with his version. It seems impossible that my wife and I have a 50th wedding anniversary coming up, but it seems more impossible that my collection of folk albums from the early to mid 60s is as old as it is.

I don't want to influence anyone's views on this song or give too much away, but "Seasons In The Sun" will very likely be the first song in this marathon that won't be mid-to-uptempo and fun in the traditional sense of the word. The 1970s saw a wave of what were called "story songs" or music that was centered on a character/characters going through a significant life or fact based event that wasn't necessarily about traditional love or heartbreak. Examples of other 1970s "story songs" that were hits include:
*"Cat's In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin (A song about a father's relationship with his growing son and how the son, when he becomes an adult, takes on significant traits of his father; An interesting note is that while "Cat's In The Cradle" is by far Chapin's biggest and most well known hit, going to #1 on the charts, he actually had a top #25 "story song" called "Taxi" a couple of years earlier)
*Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (As Lightfoot was known as a musician who embraced writing about historical events, this is a song about a real life iron ore carrier ship named the SS Edmund Fitzgerald that sunk in Lake Superior during the mid-1970s. Since its release, the song has become nearly inseparable from most people's knowledge about the wreck and the crew members that tragically lost their lives)
*"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence (A fictional song about characters involved in adultery allegations and serious legal crimes in a rural Southern town. The story of the song centers on the punishment meted out on the character that is accused of the crime and whether or not that character was actually guilty)
*Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves" (The main character in this seemingly fictional song appears to be a teenage girl whose family performs in a traveling carnival type show and tries, when not working at the carnival, to make enough money to survive by hustling. It is also implied that the main character may be physically taken advantage of by men in the towns that they work in exchange for money, ultimately perhaps resulting in her having an unplanned pregnancy)
*"Midnight Train To Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips (This fictional story song may be as close to a traditional love song that's included here. The main character is a female whose male partner packed up all their belongings and moved to Los Angeles with his love, expecting to become famous in a way not explained in the song. However, like most who move to LA with such dreams, the man is not successful. Ultimately, he decides to return home, taking the midnight train. The female love interest is caught between staying in LA potentially bettering her own circumstances or following her love back to the less lucrative life they had before moving out west)
*Honorable Mention: Jim Croce, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" (Perhaps one of the best "story song" artists of the 1970s, Jim Croce would also have a hit with a similar "story song" titled "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" after "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." In this song, the main character, a billiards player from the south, ends up losing his money in a game to a much more intimidating hustler in New York City. However, the main character resolves, even against very difficult odds, to go back to the pool hall to retrieve his money and get revenge against the hustler for being swindled)
These are just 5 or 6 of the most recognizable "story songs" that were released, but there was a time in the 1970s where there was a subgenre that saw "story songs" become extremely popular, likely leading to a song like "Seasons in the Sun" being recorded and becoming a hit.
