That was a shortened version of the original song. The song is about a man who is dying and he is reminiscing about his life and saying good bye to his loved ones.

Being a child of the 70's I grew up hearing this song on the radio and not really listening to it but enjoying the jaunty music and maybe singing along to the chorus. It's only later in life when I've taken the time to listen to the lyrics that I have come to appreciate the meaning more.
It's thanks to reaction channels that I'm rediscovering songs that I've known for most of my life but not been old enough to really listen to, so keep up the good work.
Alone Again (Naturally) by Gilbert O'Sullivan is another song with a sad message to an upbeat tune.

My dad loved this song and it was one of those I chose to play at his funeral.
My sister is called Michelle so that tends to be the line that breaks me.
It's a great song though and I love it, even if there are tears almost every time I listen to it

The Channel Professor of Rock has wonderful insight and background on this song. As mentioned by others, the narrator is about to die. The reason is left unmentioned. But he knows that it’s imminent. And he’s sending his last goodbyes out. This video is incomplete. Listen to the whole song.

    Always loved this song. 70s.
I recall a postman hearing this song when delivering mail. He told Terry it is a hit...
You need to play the studio version.

It's hard to die because Spring is in the air. .Spring to me means a new beginning. Flowers blooming, sunny, baby birds chirping.etc.

Growing up as a very young child in the 70s my mom and I would always hear this song in the car and it always made me cry. I cannot remember what movie this was used in back then I'm sure I could find it on Google, but it was about the character in the movie dying and this song is him saying goodbye to the people that he's leaving behind. So you had asked the question in your reaction why is it hard to die? Well I think when looking at our own mortality and if we were in this situation knowing we were going to die I would assume it's hard to die because it's hard to say goodbye to everyone and you don't want to be gone I mean who wants to die right? But I'm so glad you're reacting to this it's a very old song it's very simple very monotone kind of in the singing But even though the lyrics are simple they're very powerful. Keep up the great work love you a great fan from sunny California I'm sure you don't remember me but I am on here making comments a lot. Find one of your bigger fans, Dannie ❣️❣️ Also for some reason this version did not do the last verse which starts with him saying goodbye Michelle my little one.. and he is saying goodbye to the love of his life I don't know why that wasn't played in this version for some reason? This is him obviously way later in life doing this song but I'm just surprised that the whole last verse isn't included for some reason?? Maybe there is a different version for some reason not sure.

This song as done by Terry Jacks has an interesting back story. Jacks changed the lyric to reflect more of a teen tragedy rather than the original Brel version that is about an older guy dying and knowing that his wife had a very long affair with his best friend. Many recordings of this song were attempted before Terry reworked the tune, but none became a pop hit (12 to 15 million sold) until Terry smoothed the beat and added the teen angst vibe. You needed to play the much earlier video when Terry had the really big hair. Susan Jacks does sing backup on this hit.

I was 5 when this came out. I cried, and cried, and cried. We were at a restaurant and had to leave. Mom made sure I didn't hear it for a while.

The song has been chopped by a third, which is really a shame. This is one of the most human songs I can ever remember, and I wish it were longer. Terry Jacks held a masterpiece here, but somehow allowed most folks pass it by ...

The original song was “Le Moribond” by Jacques Brel. This was a somewhat loose translation into English. Both lyrics and music!

I don't think they were released the same year, but for me this song is forever tied to Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphy. Probably because they're both ballads regarding approaching the end of one's life.

I think you should react to the original song and not this shortened version. BTW there are 2 shortened versions of this song one that leaves Michelle out (this one) and one that leaves Papa out. The love ones he's saying goodbye to are his friend, Papa, and Michelle (in that order). If you play the studio version you'll be able to hear the whole song.

First of all, the song didn't start from the beginning. Secondly, it is incomplete, missing the final verse - as many have pointed out. You are over thinking the meaning of the song. The man is dying, and he knows it. There are those that believe it is due to a terminal disease, and others believe that he is going to commit suicide.

The reason you're so confused is you're in the middle of a sentence and trying to treat us as I complete thought, "'it's hard to die when..." There's not even a calmer in the sentence, much less a peroid.

Extremely truncated, half the song is missing. Didn't start at the beginning and cut out more than the whole last verse. This was also dubbed, obviously replacing the live performance shown with the studio audio. Terrible choice of video.
