This is the third reaction to this song where the reactor misses the line "IT'S HARD TO DIE." The man is about to DIE. He's saying goodbye. He's terminally ill. He's making peace. He has a little time left on earth. He's buttoning it up. He's closing the loop. He's tying up the loose ends. He's arranging for his own demise. He's fucked. He's... well. you get it.

I just love your positive soul! As others have pointed out, the song is about a dying man saying goodbye to the people he loves. The lyrics to the song have an interesting history. It was actually a retelling of a French song by a Belgian poet-composer called "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"). In that song, the story was of an old man who was "dying of a broken heart" because his best friend was making love to his wife. The lyrics were translated to English by poet Rod McUen and in 1964 the Kingston Trio released the first English language version. Terry Jacks heard this English version and used it as the basis/inspiration for his version of the song (If memory serves, Terry Jacks' version was released sometime around 1974). I'd post a link, but I think my songfacts links get deleted in RUclips comments. But if you do a google search for this song and the word "songfacts" it should take you there. The story is quite interesting.

Not only is he dying young, before his papa, he's dying soon with the realization that he won't make it past this season, a good time, good weather, happy children, pretty girls, and all the birds singing in the sky. No, this song is literally about losing people in your life from the perspective of those who are passing away (ie leaving behind people such as a close childhood friend or a parent watching you die of substance abuse or leaving a spouse behind due to old age or disease). It was supposed to be profoundly sad and reflective but the way it was musically produced didn't quite translate into the deeply melancholy song it was supposed to be - and thus it is typically seen as corny or melodramatic. But it's writer meant to convey the truly deep sense of loss each situation would convey to anyone who heard it - unfortunately that deeper meaning didn't come across in the final production.

I have watched a lot of your reaction videos, and you have almost always nailed the meaning of each song-until now. Unfortunately, you have completely misinterpreted the songwriter's message behind this song. Remember the lyric "goodbye my friend it's hard to die"? The person referred to is actually dying, and saying his final goodbyes to everyone he knows and loves. Don't feel bad though, many people get caught up in the lively bouncy tune, and completely are unaware of the song's really sad message behind that upbeat music.

Although Jacks himself was not dying (AFAIK, he's still alive & pushing 80), he tells the story of a man dying young & saying good-bye to his best friend, father, & either a wife, girlfriend, or child. Note the contrast between the deep, despondent chords prior to each verse & Jacks' own fairly high-pitched voice, which makes an uneasy contrast that is echoed throughout the verses & refrain.

Terry Jacks was a producer who actually created this song arrangement for The Beach Boys, but they turned it down, so he released it himself, and had a massive worldwide hit with it... his follow-up was another Jacques Brel song, "If You Go Away" ("Ne Me Quitte Pas"), which has been covered dozens, maybe hundreds of times (Scott Walker's version is excellent.)
As with most Brel covers, there's a lot lost in translation - his original lyrics for "Seasons Of The Sun" are far harsher, but he's an incredible songwriter/poet; Le diable (Ça va) / The Devil (Okay) might have been written yesterday rather than over 60 years ago... there's a lot of humour in his work too, check out Chanson de Jacky or Le tango funèbre...

Oh my god, did you not even bother really listening to the lyric's. This guy was dying, and seeing his life flashing before him, and you were to busy chewing your finger-nail's. Your understanding of music, is the same as my understanding of basic rocket science ...

This is the PG version. The Kingston Trio did a version of this song that was a more direct translation from the Jacques Brel song: "Le Moribond". ruclips.net/video/GLfRtK0oxYE/видео.html

Big smile, happy face and bopping along just possibly maybe may not be the appropriate reaction to this song dear DayOne Reacts inappropriately. Hope you will grow as a person and not simply die as the person in the song and the millions and millions in actual real in your face life in the actual in your face real world.

This was banned for awhile in the U. K. because it was considered to be about Suicide. 😮
