[Switch] How To Dump Game RomFS

- This video will show you how to dump any Switch games RomFS. This is useful for creating game mods or learning how the file system works in that game. In order to do this, you will need a CFW installed that has access to the Homebrew Launcher.
Dumping game files is very useful for many reasons. You will be able to extract music from games and listen to it in other places, extract models/textures to view their details or import them into other games, see how the game internals work, and much more!
This should be a pretty straightforward guide, but as always, please comment below if you are having any issues. Like with any other Homebrew tool, this requires Atmosphere to be installed. Below is a link to help with that if you are just getting started!

I did exact same but it appears a message " warning: missing keys file at sdmc:/switch/prod.keys.

You have to get the LockpickRCM and Install it
Key file unavailable at sdmc switch prod. key. Option is disabled How do I fix this?
Run lockpick_rcm before
this helped so much i got the among us and bowser's fury files! (among us was for just looking through it and bowser's fury was for modding)
is there a chance that you would be making the files public ? (i was waiting for someone to rip the sfx (sound effects like Fury Bowsers Roar) and upload them to sound resource, noone did that yet :/

I prefer the SXDumper tool MUCH simpler and pretty much all the same options but you can dump to a hard drive/flash drive etc instead of just the SD card.
so you dont need a SD card?
well this is our only option now cause its impossible to get the sx software now so we cant really use it anymore
How can I start it with an emulator such as YUZU or ryujinx after dumping (file extraction) to a PC?
I can't find any files in the RomFs folder that I could start.

I keep on trying to dump the files and it says "Invalid header size for NCA RomFS Section" is there any way to fix that?
I followed all the steps but my romfs folder on my switch is empty. It took over 10 hours for the dump with finish. What do I do?
I also don't have a nxdumptool folder in my switch folder, even after the dump completed.
I realized I had to physically take out the SD card to get the folder to appear. I was using FTDP which was why I was having those problems.
So now that we dumped the games how can we modify the game and run it after?
Does anyone know how I can make the game or emulator load the modified RomFS files?
In my case I am editing images and textures and I would like to be able to load them into the game.
dumo them as xci or nsp and it works with yuzu
I tried to do this but i noticed when it showed the save location it didn't specificaly say SD card for me it said emmc somthing.
Great tutorial but I have a problem: when I try to dump my game in romfs format also using the latest game update it gives me this error: "invalid public rsa exponent for eTicket data! Wrong keys". I have already generated the keys with lockpick but continues to give me this error despite using the latest version of nxdumptool (1.1.10) .... what could I do?

I am trying this with Breath of the Wild right now, and the speed is always on something like 0.3 - 0.5 MiB/s which for 16GB of data will take ages. Any tips on how to make it faster? I am already using a decent SD-Card which has something like 300 read and 100 write.
Well, Bandwith of the card reader + the micro sd card slot are the reason why the speed is so bad
The game speed is always like that but it goes by fast if you leave it running and do something else
Is there a way to extract the ROMs from the Switch Online emulators? I want to play some of the games on a DMG Game Boy and my PC using a flashcart but I don't want to steal these games. Yes, for some odd reason the law says no downloading ROMs even if you have your own copies of the game (I'm going to delete them when my Switch Online expires, just wanted to beat games like SML2 on the original hardware and delete it after that but keep the save data)

why do you have to do two seperate dumps for the NSP's referring to DLC and the actual game. Kinda weird you can't just include the updates or anything like that.

I've tried to dump my RomFS from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe onto my sd card but there is always this one error: 'findKeyInProcessMemory: unable to locate key "header_key_source" in process memory!'
I don't know what to do now. I've used lockpick before and put prod und title keys both in my /switch folder... :(
Does someone know what I can do to get access to the RomFS file?

Okay so i figured it out whats wrong. Basically if you are on FW 17+ you have to use "nxdumptool-rewrite (latest commit build) Pre-release" version
You need the newer dumptool, the one in the video is outdated

So I've dumped Mario Kart 8 deluxe 2.1.0 with the DLC and all that. I have custom tracks, characters, UI and all that good stuff which all workl perfectly. The problem is when I go to one of the Wave 1 or 2 tracks it crashes EVERYTIME. I'm not sure what I've done wrong?

You need the exeFS files as well. Good luck finding out how to get them. Nobody will tell you.

Hi! Why when I open up the NXdumptool it tells me : warning : missing keys. This file needs to deal with incryption schemes used by Nintendo Switch Content files.
You have to use NXdumptool version 1.1.12 . Also before you have to use lockpick, to get the keys.

Hi I have a question doing this technique can i extract animations and models from any Nintendo Switch game ?
the romFS dump is the switch game but extracted, to make changes such as texture/model swapping. by dumping your romFS, then you've already dumped the animations and anything else the game uses
so I dump the basic game but how do the updates work? Lets say that i dump my botw game but will it work assuming the core game doesnt have all the updates?

That all depends on the game. You will have to do research related to the file format and editing for that game. Each game uses different file formats
If you are trying to get textures from first part Nintendo games, I usually have a pretty good success rate with switch toolbox in opening files, texture and model files alike.
This is not the type of rom dumping I was talking about, Google. Damn it!
Hello it worked but when I take my sd and plug it in my PC it gets corrupted. should I make my USB fat32?
This happened to me once after dumping MK8D. I think it is because SD cards are not able to handle so many small files easily, so it could corrupt. FAT32 is definitely the superior filesystem over exFAT though, so yes you should change.
do the switch has to be on a specific update firmware?
You want it on the latest updated firmware. That includes both the prod and title keys and latest firmware updates that Nintendo puts onto their console. Otherwise, certain games may crash. Especially newly released one's

I try to do this with Pokemon Sword, and I keep getting errors like 1 second in something fails to dump, I've tried 20 times so far. What can I do to not get errors?
if u got an older atmosphere version as the game requires u cant dump them.
if atmosphere has compability with 16.0 and ur game requires a system with 17.0 u cant dump it.
update atmosphere and apps and than it should work.
Any way to stitch this into an .nsp? Ryujinx apparently can't open the files as they are.
did u watch the video? he told you everything ^^. just dump the file into XCI or NSP and yuzu and ryujinx can read it.

what format are the soundtrack files usually in? i found files with bgyml format but I'm not sure.
Depends on the same, but yeah they could be in bgyml. The file types will require different software to convert it to a .wav or other usable audio file for PC

Weird, I'm not sure about that exact issue. Did you make sure to launch the hb menu over an app (like in the video) and does your SD card have enough space for all of the files? Other than those, I'm not sure how to help. Might need to ask on a forum

are you asking about dumping your _save_? it's like creating a backup of your save. using checkpoint or JKSV, you can do this. it will save it to your SD card, and you can then edit it with a save editor if that's what you're looking to do. if not, then whenever you feel like starting over, but still want to keep your original save, you are allowed to create multiple backups with JKSV or checkpoint, and you can restore them at any point in time in the future.

Run the Lockpick_RCM payload, this is usually done when you first install CFW. It will generate the keys files

hey darkflare can you please help me out, I have been trying to dump a game that I digitally download from the eshop on my vanilla version of my switch, I have 0 clue on how to do this, i did ask on discord but...the help wasn't that good since i am still at lost on how to do this - can you please make a tutorial on how to do this??? T_T
as long as your "vanilla" switch is able to be modded, then you can follow this tutorial. there is no currently known way to dump a game from a patched switch

however much space the game is. because a romFS dump is the entire game but extracted, it will be the same size as the normal game. so if you take new horizons for example, which is ~6gb, then the romFS dump will also be ~6gb

A tool like this might be able to help you extract a backup of the game into romfs format: github.com/jakcron/nstool
To extract directly from console like this, with update, it isn't possible with only PC sadly.

it will contain everything in the game. a romFS dump is the ENTIRE switch game, except everything is viewable and able to be edited.

Yes, those can be dumped too. My MK8D copy from in the video is digital.
@@DarkFlare shew That's a relief. I was starting to think I wasted 1200 dollars by just using the eshop. So the only way to do it on the oled is order the piece online and solder it?? If that's the case I need to start looking into it more seriously.

No. If you want to open up your switch and spend 100 dollars on a modded card that gets soulders into your switch then yes. Not recommended

Does this work for ISO dumping? How should I extract the entire game's contents into an iso?
.iso is not a format used for Switch games. .iso Files are disc images, the switch does not use Discs, it uses cartridges. Cartridge dumps are .xci and eShop Backups are .nsp

after i dumped botw (all options were on yes) i got only the base folder (ending with 000) and not the dllc folder that ends with 001. any idea how i get that folder now ?
You need to specifically click the option for romfs and for whatever the other option is. It will make the files. Then you drag them to your contents/title folder [Ex Botw whatever the title id is>romfs]. I made the mistake early today of not dragging it into the contents folder.
