  • Hello fellow beach and shell nuts! In this episode we we're super excited to finally be able to return to two of our favorite places in the world to shell and enjoy the beach: Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach. Even though there weren't any recent wave or wind events to help push a lot of new shells onto the beach before our visit, we still discovered a great collection of beach treasures and returned with more great memories of walking and swimming at these two beautiful locations. It was also great to see the progress of the recovery from hurricane Ian and these 2 beloved beach towns coming back to life. As always, thanks for watching!

    Hey Chris and Kandie! Lovely early morning adventure for you guys; what a big trip! I also love the early drives... no traffic!! It's pretty amazing to see the effect of the hurricane even after a year. I have been wondering how you and everyone else is doing after the one from a few weeks ago (Idalia)... hope you are all doing alright, and are finding some goodies washed ashore because of it! Mostly, I hope you and your communities are okay. Onto the shells though! Loved the Florida Fighting Conks, your Lettered Olive, a of course, the hinged Spiny Jewel Boxes!! SO NICE!! To me, it looks like there was a lot of shells at Fort Meyers, how wonderful! It definitely wasn't a wasted trip! The favourite for me today was that lovely and dark Apple Murex, wow. Thank you so much for share your shelling adventures :D

      Hi Maddie! Thank you as always for all of your feedback. You're the best! Sorry for the delay in responding. We took a little break from online activities to recharge. The recent storms this summer did bring us some great shells on both the east and west coasts of Florida. We have a really good video we're going to post soon about some great shelling days on the southeast coast thanks to those storms. The storms missed our part of Florida so we're okay. Thank you for your concern! Yes, Fort Meyers has a lot of great shells. To be honest, we typically find more shells there than Sanibel. I think Sanibel is worked over pretty hard by shellers every day. We hope you're doing well and keep up all the great work on your video channel. It's tough to keep up with all your great content!

      @@theshellnuts Oh my goodness, don't worry about that; I can barely keep on top of my messages too! I can't wait to see what you've found after the storm (I'm so, so glad that the worst of it missed you); you guys always find the best shells while you're out there. Huh, I suppose Sanibel sees a lot of visitors and people looking for shells; it must be hard to be the first one there to find them! I bet it feels pretty good when you beat everyone else to the best ones though :) Thank you for taking the time to reply, and stay safe you two!

    We went for the weekend last week.Only shells I found were scallops and a lot of tinies for my granddaughter.Shelling in May was better for me on Sanibel.Every day is different.We helped other people shell for awhile.I found 1 fighting conch I dug up in the sand and gave the shell away.Take Care!

      So you had about the same luck we did. :) You're absolutely right about every day being different. That's cool you could help some others shell. :) You take care also!

      Vero Beach is a gorgeous area, but we've yet to hit the beach there. The furthest north we've gone is Walton Rocks Beach which is about 30 minutes south of Vero Beach. We've heard that South Beach Park in Vero Beach can be good for shelling, so you might try that one. Hope you enjoy your vacation!

    What month in your opinion is the best for shelling?

    What do you do,when you find a shell with a live animal inside?

    • @theshellnuts
      @theshellnuts  9 месяцев назад

      Good question. We return any live critters and their shells to the water. We do that in many of our videos and try to promote that habit to others. We're only interested empty shells.

    Where did you park in Fort Myers Beach?

      Hi Betty. Sorry for the delayed reply! There are small streets near the beach where you can park. It is pay-by-phone parking. I think it was about $5 an hour.

    What do you use for the noseeums?

    • @theshellnuts
      @theshellnuts  9 месяцев назад

      Good question. My wife Kandie is allergic to the bites so she’s tried everything. Nothing works perfectly when they’re thick. The best bet is to stay in the breeze(>10mph) to keep them off you, and breeze typically is stronger mid-day. For bites, Cortizone-10 cooling gel and stay in cool air.

      @@theshellnuts I have heard many suggestions but the common theme seems to be what you said and to wear a thick lotion/cream of some sort because they are too little to penetrate through the barrier. I’m allergic also and I am always a mess for a month after we come back to Ohio!

      I saw a guy in Sanibel with a full No Eeum suit. It was mesh and some kind of material. Those noseeum are horrible

    🐞Where did you go to breakfast? Thanks. 🐞

      We were soaking wet and sandy from snorkeling and the dirt parking lot(shower facility not working yet), and Kandie was torn up with noseeum bites, so we were a bit of a mess and decided to stay out of site and hit the McDonald’s drive-thru on the way to Fort Myers Beach. For lunch we hit up a food truck there in FMB.
