Running Out of Gas on a Honda Motorcycle

- Running out of gas on a honda motorcycle. Running out of gas while out on the Honda Shadow wasn't in my plan today. Not entirely sure that is what happened, but the only explanation I have. Have you ever ran out of gas while out riding? At the end, we just go for a cruise down Main Street to make sure all is good with the motorcycle, before heading to work.

This video is a slight bit random. I just happen to have the camera on when the bike started to die in me. Hope you enjoyed riding with and seeing our downtown area a bit at the end of the video. So what do you think? Do you think I just ran out of gas? Or is there a further issue?
My reserve tank has saved me a couple times in the past.
In an unrelated story I had to have my.son come to my job and help bump start my bike last night after a weathermans bad no rain call.now I have to figure out what caused the no start.
Glad you had a gas station close, sputters can definitely get your heart pumping.
Dang! Hopefully it is just a bad connection that just got wet and can be an easy fix! I am sure if I were out of town, I would have had more of the “oh crap” moment. For some reason, I just handled the situation calmly. 😆
When I first bought mine I had no idea how many miles I could get. Never even thought about it. Sure enough I ran out of gas on my first long ride. Never paid any attention to the fuel selector. By divine interventions it was not on reserve
I totally know that feeling! My heart went down to my stomach, thinking something was wrong with the bike.
I think I kept pretty calm. What’s funny, is I don’t think I told you about this. You probably learned of this by watching the video. 😂
@@TWOWHEELD Yep! News to me. 😉
@@mrstwowheeld yep! Need to watch these videos to find out what happens when I ride the Shadow! 😂
I fill up after 180 miles on my 2019 Aero. On reserve by then if on interstate. Not on reserve if riding back roads. But I do run the recommended 87 octane.
As to the blowback when filling up, I used a nail and put a small hole on each side of the fill tube so the air can escape.
Fellow riders that ride with me always have to stop earlier than me while we ride together.
I also run my tires an extra 3 psi.
Thank you for the feedback! Sounds like you have a pretty good system figured out!
I have come close, but have never run out.
I once was able to say that. Now I can’t. 😂
I have a 2009 Shadow Aero with Many mods & I Love it... One day while rounding a left turn in the road it quit. I was about to go down because of it and thankfully the engine fired back up and I just barely got it back up level and turned on reserve. It scared me shitless to say the least.
I believe that really got your attention! Wow! Glad you were able to keep it up and we’re able to continue on! Thanks for watching and commenting!
So thankful for that reserve. Ran out of gas going 99 mph on the hwy. switched it to reserve and went back to 99 mph before hitting a gas stationZ
Nice! Glad you got it switched over!
ive been wondering that since i’m a new rider. so does the bike boggle down and you can right away flip the switch and it’ll go back to normal?
You pretty much have to get it switched just as you are starting to sputter, then you better get to a station In probably 20 miles or less roughly. I try not to let it happen. This was the only time I ever had it happen.
@@TWOWHEELD great info, thank you !
Oh, man I love this bike! Do you have a fuel switch? My vulcan have 3 positions! On, Res and pri
Yes. There is a reserve switch in the petcock. The thought went through my mind, but I don’t think I would have got it switched quick enough. Grabbing the clutch was my initial reaction to get the bike out of gear and coast to the pump. 😆 First time I have ever experienced this on my own.
I had the same thing happen to me i was able to switch over to the reserve. I normally fill up @ 120-130 miles. 3.9 gallon tank.
Seems like a person would have to move pretty quickly to get it changed to reserve. Our fuel stops have been all messed up recently, so it has been hard to calculate. Put gas in at home of sequence.
I’m a new rider, I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit 750. This is something I really need to think about because I live in the country just short of 15 miles from a gas station. How many miles do you go before refueling? Subscribed 😊
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing! I figure about 100 miles. I once would figure about 120, but after I did the exhaust and carb upgrades, I can’t go that many. I usually check every time I get on the bike, unless I know I just filled it not long ago. You will probably just have to push yours and test it out. Maybe take a little fuel with you just in case. 😆
@@TWOWHEELD thanks for the reply. My odometer button clicks but doesn’t change to the trip mileage or anything else. It just shows the regular odometer. Ever run into that problem? I thought about tracking by using the trip miles but I guess I could just glance at the odometer and see where I’m at.
@theycallmejphil5018 I have always just used one of the trips. I use one trip to track my total miles for the season, and then the other for fuel range. If yours are not working, I’m not sure what the fix would be and yeah, you would have to kind of keep track in your head of the odometer. Maybe take a picture or make a note in your phone.
I set my trip odo to 0 and run 80 miles to fill-up.
That sounds like a very safe bet. Generally that’s what we do, but it hadn’t been done properly lately. Then with the upgrades, trying to figure the new amount of miles it can go. Normally this bike can do 100-120 miles on a tank. With the aggressive riding I do on it, 80 would probably be safe! 😂
I do 100 miles to be safe on my 2002 Honda shadow the luxe
@jorgeeltoritoperez7238 I thought I could do about the same. I must not have had enough in this last time. Ran out around 85 a block from the gas station. 😂
You had about a gallon left in the tank. You never did flip the petcock valve from run to reserve. I remember my older bikes had the petcock valve with a run-off-reserve setting. Of coarse fuel injection systems don't have this feature.
Nope. I didn’t. It all kind of took me by surprise. My instinct was to pull in the clutch and get to that station. I kind of calculated in my head I would make it to at least the turning lane in front of the entrance, and I could push the bike the rest of the way if needed. Then it started and I was like, yes! 😆 I haven’t messed with the petcock in a long time. I pretty much just leave it alone. It is such a weird feature having reserve. Makes me think of the old pickups with two fuel tanks.
@@TWOWHEELD The normal range on the Shadow is about 150 plus miles. It holds about 3.7 gal. I remember I had to flip mine a time or two years ago. Today when I see about 125 miles I don't wait for the low fuel light...I fill up. By the way the 750 runs perfect on 87 to 89 octane. Your Harley needs 91 to 93 I think. Ride safe.
@@rfrmobile4314 yeah, that range sounds about right. Normally I would fill up by the 120 mile mark. Lately, it seems that I have been putting gas in at home, further throwing that off. One day, we will get back on track. I have run the lower octane before, but normally out in 91. We have so much ethanol around here, and I know the 91 doesn’t have any in it. Just been a habit to run 91 in all my small engines and motorcycles. I should experiment and see if there are any gains or losses between the two.
@@TWOWHEELD Too much ethanol is not good. Here it's 10 % and thats too much to me. Used to be able to find E-free but not anymore around here. Keep on keeping on and ride safe.
We have a lot of E10 around here as well. That might be in the 89 octane and the 87 might be ethanol free like the 91. I will have to look again when I get gas next. I do run E30 in my Gladiator. Ran it in my F150 prior as well.
What's your favorite riding temps to ride in?
I like fall riding. I would say a daytime temp of around 70 is my favorite. I like to be able to wear my flannel and not be too hot or too cold. What about you?
@@TWOWHEELD I have to say this is my favorite time of the year to ride also like you said not to hot or to cold. I know a few people that like riding in mid summer
@@steveguigar949 I think it has something to do with where you are riding as well. I would take a colder day over a super hot day all day long! 40 degrees versus 90 degrees. 40 gets my vote. 😆 but that 60-75 range is great!
I have to be thankful my Shadow has a fuel light - which according to the manual indicates about 3.7 litres (A gallon I guess) left? I am still not game enough to test it to its fullest extent. I get about 200km before the light comes on.
It’s a nice feature to have as a reminder. I have been close to empty several times, but this time caught me off guard. 😆
Normally if im going on a longer trip and ive forgotten my trip reset then i have a very small 1-2 gallon gas can that easily fots wherever i need it too
Nice! That sounds perfect! Just enough to stretch you to the next stopping point! I like that!
Not really related to the topic but what building was that on Main Street with the red facade and blue lettering?
I think the building you are seeing is Maxwell Food Supply. Maxwell something anyways. 😆
Just happened to me. If you keep starting it it eventually stops starting lol mine was empty but I had gas b4 I left as well
Sure catches a person off guard when it happens. 😆
I have a 06 Shadow 1100 and have had many episodes where it has just died. First time was the fuel pulsar failed, second time I was going full throttle for a long time on the freeway, and it drained only one side of the gas tank and it died, third time was a failed fuel pump at 40k miles. Shortly after that my charging issues started and it came down to a bad voltage regulator. Now I'm running g a mosfet one and it seems ok accept my new led has a slight flickering issue.
Dang! Sounds like a few inconveniences there! That would be a bit frustrating! Cruising down the road and just dying like that! Hopefully the flickering is a simple fix. Maybe just the bulb and hopefully not an amperage issue or something along those lines. Thank you for taking the time to share your comment!
That happens when you have old gas and you haven't ride the bike for a while and didn't run the engine for 45 seconds before starting to ride
This occasion I run out of fuel. But I do let the bike run usually for a minute or two before I actually take off in most cases. Usually I fire it up before I put my helmet on so it can warm up a bit while I do that and roll out of the garage. I did end up with some carb issues after this video, but all is good now after building it out to where it is now. Thanks for watching!
where did u get that clock on the handle bars?
I found it on Amazon a few years back, but have not been able to find it again. I have had several people asking for a link, and all I can say is I am sorry. It may have been under the bicycle category as well of that helps you. Handlebar clock I would think would show some. Hope that helps!
I would run some seafoam through it. I would think you would have at least a four gallon tank.
Everything should be clean for the most part. We just had the jets replaced and carb cleaned in July. It’s possible there was a piece of debris that clogged and then came loose.
Fuel tank size is just a little over 3 gallons. I believe that is counting the reserve as well. So it was probably getting close to low. So far it has been fine since this. Hope that’s all it was. Thanks for watching!
Total capacity by the book 3.7 US gal
.9 reserve.
@@deormanrobey892 with the .9 reserve of that total amount, I was tip toeing on that being out the way it seems. 😊 I’m surprised by it starting in the turning lane. Lol
You could have turned the fuel switch to "reserve" and have enough to get to a gas station
I sure could have. I thought I was having some mechanical issues at the time. I had never ran it out of fuel before. Now a few years later, I know the signs so to say. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TWOWHEELD I know it's pretty confusing, it happened to me at the beginning, I was on the highway, and I thought "well, I hope I'm just running out of gas". Fortunately enough, it was the gas
@cocodjambo Right! My mind goes to, “this seems like and expensive fix!” 😆
Don’t run premium
What octane do you run? I always have run 91 octane in all my small engines and motorcycles. I definitely avoid any ethanol products in he bikes.
when my honda starts to act funny and stall i flip to reserve switch and keep truckn no issues.
Once a person knows the sign of running out of fuel, it makes that motion a lot easier. 😆
I think that’s what just happened to me
It just comes out of nowhere! Hope that’s what you had happen and not something serious!
