    Etho,
I know you say you haven’t been able to put out as many videos but honestly you’ve been doing really well considering your situation that you mentioned. Losing a parent is probably one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing that can happen. Especially if you lose them far too “soon” (losing them at any time is very difficult though). The fact that you’re able to continue as well as help your family is so commendable. I also lost recently my dad a few months before you did (far too “soon” as well), and it’s a very difficult circumstance. Please don’t feel pressured from viewers to make more videos if you need to help your mom out or if you need a break as well (it seems like you aren’t which is good). The pain never goes away but it does lessen with time and support from family and friends. Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them!
Anyways, to not be so deep, I have a random question:
Have you touched anything to do with VR yet? Is it something that interests you? If you have tried VR games, what do you think about it?

Two things about villagers: The major bonus from curing actually only stacks from 5 cycles, then it its the cap. And zombie villagers do indeed not despawn, but only if they have been traded with at least once, and thus have their profession locked in.

Personally I love villagers because they make building large projects so much easier but I definitely agree that they aren't the most fun mechanic. If I were able to change it, I would make the villager system more akin to Terraria where each villager needs a room with certain requirements before he's willing to trade with you. For example, maybe each villager needs a room with at least 5 x 5 floor space, a bed, a chest and his workstation. Obviously some people would just build tiny boring boxes to get their trades but this system would encourage people to build individual houses for each villager, which would take more time but would be much more fun. To expand upon the idea, you could have it so each villager has slightly different requirements for their room before their willing to trade (which you would be able to check by clicking on the villager, replacing the trade menu until they have a house) which would again encourage some more creativity when making trading halls. This system might not work at all, and it would certainly be difficult to code for a game like minecraft but I think it would be a fun idea that encourages more creativity when dealing with villagers than sticking them in a 1 x 1 x 2 hole.

Whenever I want villagers to go somewhere I just make the path end with a single block up and they go there on their own.

I think villagers are fine UNTIL you start chaining systems together. If you just roamed from village to village trading with what you have on you at the time, I think they are perfectly fine. It's when you start to setup massive reed farms for paper and whatnot, that's when I think Villagers start to enter the realm of "OP". If they want to try and balance them out a bit, they'd have to address that further than how they have already.

I agree. Playing with my friends when the update came out was really fun but there's no doubt that the villager trades were insanely overpowered. If they actually got those right I think 1.14 would be regarded as one of the better updates by the community.

The segment in the start made me recall a thought I had recently when I started playing in a new world: Minecraft actually has a really fun combat system.
The thing is, I've never really thought much about it. I've taken it for granted, yeah you hit enemies with a sword, they die, how much more is there really to it? But as I started my new world recently, I realized just how many different types of encounters you can have, and how there are always so many different ways to go about "solving" them.
One time I encountered 2 skeletons, 1 zombie and 1 creeper. Not an unusual thing. But there are so many things you have to consider while fightning them: Don't get too close to the creeper, don't stand still letting the zombie catch up, keep sidestepping the skeleton's arrows, all while navigating the terrain you currently happen to be in. How do you go about killing them? Do you take the skeletons first? Do you try to make them shoot eachother? Do you go for the creeper first, as its the potentially most dangerous enemy? The zombie because it is closest? Do you try to get a music disc off the creeper?
The variety of what mob combination you encounter, in combination with the variety of environments you could be fightning them in, means that every single fight is different, and will require a slightly different approach than the last one.
And the best part of it, you feel like you're totally in control of your character during any of these fights. It's quick and snappy, there are no 2 second long animations to swing your sword. You can use special tools like, blocks, bows, water, ender pearls, potions etc. if you feel like that is what is required in the moment. Since you have so much control in any given moment, you really "should" be able to handle any situation, but how well do you actually do it? This means that there is potentially a really high skill ceiling, there is probably always something you could do to fight more "efficiently".
On the other hand, you don't have to do every fight in the most "efficient" way. As long as you survive, you're fine. This means that the skill floor is also relatively low, I don't think many would consider minecraft combat to be especially "difficult". I think this is a good thing, most people can figure out how to kill a zombie, but when put in more complicated situations, one might need to be a bit more careful, or have more experience with how to deal with those types of encounters.
Anyways just some thoughts I've had recently and wanted to share. Do you agree, or am I overanalyzing this and giving too much credit?

Hey Etho, just a tip with villagers. While you can cure them more than 5 times to reduce prices, these are not permanent discounts, as they only remember up to 5 cures per mentally. After a certain amount of time, the trade prices will go back up. Also, you may run into the issue where villagers stand on the thin part of the trapdoor that still has a hit box while open, and you’ll get two villagers in one storage unit. The water system should help them to separate out, but just something to keep in mind

    • @satchmo006
      @satchmo006 Год назад +1

repeated trades in quick succession will bring the villager trade prices up (supply/demand) but leaving them alone for a period of time will allow the prices to drop back down to the lowest prices again. It's a good idea to have MANY villagers of the same type to avoid the increase in prices after trading many times quickly with just a few villagers.

    • @vividandlucid

The trapdoor issue could perhaps be fixed by replacing them with fence gates

  • @brettgraves13
    @brettgraves13 Год назад +1

I would make 3 interrelated changes to villagers that I think are quite small but would have large impact to them.
    1) When a trade's stock runs out they would pick a new trade according to their profession to replace it the next time they visit their workstation. Likely with a tiny chance to replace non-out of stock trades as well if all their trades have stock. (Part of this would also be letting Datapacks create/control the workstations/professions and the linked trades.)
    2) Give the villagers a wealth tag that accumulates when they sell something and decrements when they by something. Then add that value to their gossip system that does some weighted average with a middling value, their current value, and the value they get from the other villager they gossip to. If they have a high wealth they are more likely to pick trades that buy things (thus decrementing wealth) and when under a low threshold they are more likely to pick trades that sell things.
    3) Add some sort of trading post block that lets you put emeralds or items in it and villagers nearby can then use the inventory in it to make a random trade placing the new items back into the inventory with trades that give an item already in the trading post being less likely to be selected. Though I'm uncertain how well this would interact with enchanted items.
This would create a system where the non-technical players would be able to set up the trading post block and just get an assortment of items based on the villagers they have so farmers would slowly exchange for fooditems in it, a trading post in a blacksmith heavy area would slowly give armors and tools, etc. over time and if they want to get specific items they trade with the villagers looking for that item the same as now.
Trading halls as they currently exist would then be more generalized to discourage using them for mass trade of a single item but still be available for doing so at a slower rate.
Technical players could then use the trading posts with filtered hopper redstone systems to slowly gain a particular item automatically. With a sliding scale where even more technical players can add more complications like:
    - careful control of gossip villagers which can only trade at one post so to slowly force their wealth in one direction.
    - add a system of separate areas that automatically send certain items from one trading post to another area to allow a slow afk where farmer villagers can harvest and sell carrots then they can trade with a post that will drain the emeralds by nearly filling the post with food-like items, and then sending the emeralds to another area to trade for some other items slowly over time with different ways of setting up the trading posts to guide the trades to get certain items.

I also played Starbound in the first iterations of the game, and personally, I feel exactly how you do about it. For me, I think it came down to the massive change in the way the style of the game changed. It's hard to explain, but the original game had a different pacing that was really, really cool. I can't remember exactly how it worked, but it was something like every planet had a level, 1-100, and a "rating" I'll call it, A-Z. Idk if it was A-Z, but something like that. A planet that was A1 was weaker than a planet that was A5. A5 was weaker than A10. But a planet that was B20 was something like the strength of an A60. I can't remember the system exactly, but it was so, so, so cool the way it worked. It was a bit complicated and convoluted, but I think it had a ton of potential if it was just iterated on a few times. But instead they completely scrapped that because it was too challenging, and in my eyes, it felt like they didn't respect the player. They had a really neat system that was a bit challenging to learn, but was really cool and added a ton of diversity to the game, and removing it because it was too hard just felt like they didn't respect the players, and from then on, it just felt weird playing the game

4:27 In response to your question, the main goal of changes I envision would be to stop the "jail cells" trading halls.
First of all, limit the effectiveness of multiple curings, 1 should be enough. Secondly add a "happyness" measurement to villagers, which goes up if they're walking around, chatting with other villagers, smelling flowers, looking at paintings, etc. Basically incentivizing players to make a "functional" village to get good trades.

Villager design fix: Supply & Demand.
Whenever you buy something from a villager, the cost to you for that item(s) goes up. Across all villagers. And the higher you push it, the longer it takes to come back down. So if you "buy out the market", it becomes a less appealing way to do it.
That way villagers are still great for a splash of resources when needed, but the more you rely on it the better the proposition of adventuring yourself becomes. It would create a natural game cycle, like what day/night used to be with day being for building and surface stuff while night was ideal for mining.
Edit: I originally had an aside here to cater to the "big number go up" types, but frankly on reconsideration my enjoyment of the game is so different from that perspective that I can't offer a good pitch for that. I'll leave that to others.
Instead I'll use the space for an example of how to do it - multiplier. Say the first 32 redstone is at normal price. At a stack in a short span, apply a 1.15x multiplier to the price. At two stacks, 1.25x. At three stacks, 1.5. At a chest worth, 10x. And so on. Then the higher your multiplier, the longer it takes to degrade. Change the numbers for balance, of course. Just example numbers.

I feel as though you'd enjoy Frackin' Universe. It's a mod for Starbound that fixes that feeling of "there's something off here and I don't know why" by fleshing out a lot of the actual scientific exploration. It provides a research tree that intuitively gets you interested in trying out all the features, because as you research you unlock crafting recipes and get to learn how they function. It also adds a tonne of biodiversity. The main game suffers from the fact that you have this infinite universe to explore, but you come across the same few alien races. Starbound expands upon that by adding a lot of diversity to the planets you find and providing reason to explore by providing unique elements you can use for further research. Plus there's a lot more in the way of automation and engineering. It's a great mod.
