- Thermostat is stuck open and the engine takes a long time to warm up to operating temperature. Here I replace just the thermostat mostly from below. And it’s not that hard!

The only video I found just for replacing the thermostat. Thank you!
Same here.
Glad it helped
I have to say, this video saves me a lot of money. I'm not mechanically inclined but i watched this video more than 10x to fully understand how to do this to my gti. The one thing that i had trouble with is the hex bolt on the right of the thermostat housing which is a bitch to remove. The hex screw with the ball end was not enough, especially since it was tightly screwed and it would just slip out everytime i turn it. I also had to remove the pipe next to the inlet manifold pipe to get the hex screw more room to twist. Overall it took me 2 days 4 hours each.
Unfortunately this video must show a non-US non-Cali Mk6, as the fitting for the thermostat to the water pump is completely different than seen here. I got all the way down to removing the thermostat and couldn't get it out due to its different shape. Had it towed to a shop to finish the job... Thanks though!
I was pulling my hair out till I watched this to see I was putting the thermostat upside down...SOMEGUN!!!
Great video! Now what did I do to my repair shop's number? 🤔😉
Hey Pete great video, was your car throwing the p2181 error code before making the change? Thank you for not overlaying the video with some awful music too.
No it wasn’t. It was just taking a long time for the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature. No codes though.
Is the CBFA thermostat the same as the CCTA one? Or are they both the same. I have a CBFA type
Great vid. Is the mk6 GTI thermostat at the same location as the mk6 Golf R?
I’m not sure about that. I believe there are some differences of cars for other countries.
Why I will be just replacing the water pump at the same time to be sure to fix the issue, taking out the fan is an amazing idea
Taking the intake manifold off and swapping your water pump is easier. I've done these so many times it takes me less than an hour.
How do you get the coolant hose back onto the thermostat housing? Mine keeps coming off
It must not be clipped in all the way. Check the o ring. Put some rubber grease or even pure coolant for lubrication before assembly. Ensure the clip is installed and is retaining the hose properly.
Great detailed video. I was able to follow to get everything except the thermostat will not come out. Completely removed the two bolts holding the thermostat housing on and it WILL NOT come of🤔😢
Did you get it off?
Having same issue
Same here. Stuck at the shop as I type this… Any luck?
What size is the triple square for the manifold support bolt?
10mm from memory. But I would need to check to confirm.
@@PetesWorkshop 10mm is correct
But they have 2 thermostats...
Engine code?
CCZB
lol uh no! Tell people you did this the hard way. lol once I saw you use 3 extensions I knew for a fact this wasnt the way to go. It would have been much easier going from the top. ALSO YOU WOULDNT NEED TO REMOVE THE MANIFOLD. I replace my entire waterpump (twice) without removing it.
