This video was insanely helpful for somebody like me that's new to these vw 's. I love the "work like a gentleman" lesson, I think that phrase is going to pop into my head whenever I find myself cursing and banging on something because I'm doing it the dumb, lazy way.
I needed this video. There are tons of videos on pan replacement, but not much on the other things that you should do with the body off! I'm planning my pan and heater channel replacement for this summer.
This is great! I just created my checklist and planning on a JBugs order today. Chris, I’ve become a fan and love your attention to detail. I’ve stripped my 1970 bug down to metal and I’m about to pull it off the chassis for epoxy primer. While off I’ll definitely follow your guidance. Thank you!
Thanks for a great video Chris. I'm starting my own '65 project in a few days and this kind of videos gives a lot of information for beginning beetle builder.
Tough to find these days. Many places say "German" but they come routed thru Taiwan sometimes. We like wolfsburgwest.com for the top of the line parts.
Thanks for the comprehensive walkover of the whole chasis. Love the video! I know veedubs quite well already, I am just looking for inspiration and more enthusiasm to kick in. I found some thanks to you :) I am about to start finishing my bug. Wish me luck that I have enough energy and motivaton. Looks like you have got enough :) Nice clean workshop btw, good luck further on bro !
doing this exact year rebuild from ground up, great video, its really helped. question? where do you buy your new transmission without sending a core, the price you named is about what i can spend, rather just buy outright
Thanks Chris for the inspiration, I have a 71 Super Beatle convertible. I've been the owner since 1980, an have kept it up the best I can with limited resources & skills. The problem I am experiencing now is finding a old school VW mechanic that can work on my car in my area without a bad attitude . Any suggestions? I love my car but options are limited in my area . Thanks again for the information.
Do you think using bed liner on a car as nice as this 65, could appear to some that you are hiding defects with this coating? If this car was totally rust free underneath ,would you do the same, or prep and paint it a matt black to give the car credit for the condition it''s in?
It is entirely up to the client. We can do it anyway they choose. And if I do an undercoating, I do not cake it on, it is just a light coat. I usually just do a truck bed liner and it does not come out like mud, like some undercoating sprays. Most times it is sprayed with a VHT chassis paint or POR-15.
The likelihood of that happening before you die is very small. The factory used nails, and many of those pans survived. If they did rust it was not due to the nails. You can always use an adhesive to keep the seal down, or touch it with some paint underneath where the screw came through. Hope that helps, =o)
Chris, nice job on that bug. I would like to know if you have ever repaired the tubes on the rear suspension where the torsion bars go in. I have some rust issues in my bug and don't know if welging there is a good idea. Thanks
Chris ive been looking for a front and rear decklid for my 1956 beetle (No fiber glass) ive been searching online and i cant find them,Please help me out thanks!! And thanks for sharing your video With us!
Hi Chris, I watched this video with the chassis exposed and I wondered if you have any ideas on how to remove a lock on the shifter on my '60 bug. I purchased it this way and there is no key and I can see no way to remove it. There are no visible nuts or fasteners. One guy said to break it off or cut it off. I just want to put it stock. Best Regards, Mike in CA
Their is a material that covers the middle of the chassis. Mine had that too. Does anyone know what that is and where to find it?? If so can someone plz replay. Thank you
If you can say ? Where do you get ur parts ? I have ordered from 4 different companies so far. Some parts stock - some aftermarket ! It's really a hit/miss on getting quality parts. I try for German when I can - can't always justify spending that much extra - even thou I know it the best. My wallet just does not always agree !
hi chris is there replacement rubber that goes over the hump of the chassis i am wanting to get my chassis powder coated and that rubber will have to come off....... what's your thoughts?
+Jamie Phillips (FireWorks 4 U) If you're not a VW purist, you can put Dynamat on the tunnel and pans. A cheaper alternative is roofing tar mat (that comes in rolls) that Chris uses.
Hi, I do not know if you were the person I said about the youtube channel “Garagem 67”..... If you were not you, then take a look. Anyway, nice video, good job, very professional !!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍
you keep mentioning show standard and detailing yet the jubilee clips on the cv joints are massivly too big and unsightly. surely if you had to fit a jubilee clip you would fit the smallest size that would fit
hi, every one, can someone tell me how to find out my car's year and model so i can buy the right parts i have been buying the wrong parts my car is in my country Morocco thank you for your help in advance. :))))
Do you have a metal plate on the drivers door frame? Usually first numbers: 08/74 indicate the manufacture date 8th month, 1974. Note: manufacturer date is not necessarily model year. If the car was manufactured after the 6th month of the year, it is considered as the following years model. For instance, the 08/74 above is listed as a 1975 vw.
Chris: Is that the original I beam? Asking because I had several bugs many years ago and lived in the North, it was almost a common thing for someone with an older VW to hit the brakes hard and have the I beam buckle under from the rustTAKE THAT XXXXXXX MADE IN MEXICO LABEL OFF THAT STEERING DAMPENER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing videos Chris! Thanks!
Where is the best place for quality German parts? I’ve done lots of work on my 66 thanks to you. Keep up the excellent work.

just awesome work newfoundland canada thank for the video
Chris do you strip the paint from the new pan halves when you replace them? I’m referring to the black paint that is on the pan halves when shipped.
Depends on the client. We have done it before, but many times you can get away with scuffing them, sand em a bit, and repaint.

Won't the chassis rust again where the self tappers are? The chassis looks really nice though!

Ótimo vídeo. Pena que aqui no Brasil não tem profissionais de funilaria do mesmo nível para fazer esse tipo de vídeo.
Very best video!Thanks Chris!
Very informative..beautiful chassis
Thanks! Helped me a lot with my build. Aloha.
My book says if you are going to put radial tires on a 67 or earlier model you must still use tubes inside.

+Ruby Purcell it should be in two halves, the top part slides back. But yeah you may need a key to get this to happen.
What truck liner do you like to use?
Duplicolor or 3M

Hey Chris, is that a 1600 single port? I thought the singles were 1500, or is it custom to make it look stock?
No a 1970 motor is a 1600sp, only one year! Great motor.

The old part lasted 50 years a new master cylinder for a Volkswagen will probably only last a year
Sure now ya tell me, i did it the hard way
these are transaxles, not transmissions.
Yeahhhh @
Is there anything that someone like me couldn't do? As far as putting together interior and body parts. Nothing professional though
