I LOVE tomato sandwiches. 🤤 I toast my homemade bread. Spread Mayo, sprinkle with salt and generously ground black pepper. Your channel has inspired me to grow a garden. So far I have enjoyed fried green tomatoes, and cucumbers. This afternoon will be my first tomato sandwich of this season. Thank you for taking the time to produce this channel. I am a newer gardener and I have learned so much. I have gardened in the past and had such sad experiences that I had about sworn off from ever gardening again. This new knowledge that you have taught has given my hubby and I so much encouragement. I have never had results like this year. Thank you!
OOOHHYAAA! Girl you are talking my kind of sandwich! In my lifetime I have gone with my parents to pick tomatoes for canning, freezing and anything else you can do to a tomato. We took a loaf of bread, water, cooler and mayonnaise and had our first sandwiches in the field because we couldn't wait. Oh! Forgot to mention the salt and pepper. You ENJOY yourself babygirl! God bless!
Loved BLTs for dinner heavy on the tomato. Every Diner every mom and pop lunch place every place I went Long Island New York have BLTs for lunch. Then I moved up north to New Hampshire BLTs abound. I think BLTs are an American Dream lunch. Just make sure the bacon is not too greasy
Ok. So I know all of us watching know this. But you need to understand how awesome you are Jess. The sheer joy and excitement you have in a simple tomato sandwich and you ability to convey through the screen is astounding. I literally had tears of excitement and joy watching your face as you took that first bite. Only a few weeks behind you here in Northern Missouri and I am ten times more excited about my first blushing tomato
That anticipation to taste your first perfect ripe tomato of the season is the main motivation for so many gardeners - thank you for giving this simple ritual the dignity it deserves.
More mayo!!! White bread - fresh - non toasted. Prefer thinner slices, but layered. Salt. Good, cold ice tea sitting on porch or under tree!!! To die for. ❤️❤️❤️
I grew up in Brooklyn NY, my grandparents lived on the next block. If you’re Italian, even if you live in the city you grow stuff. My grandpa grew amazing things in his little backyard every summer. I can remember picking a juicy ripe tomato, wiping it off with my shirt and eating it right there in the garden. Heaven. Such wonderful memories.
I'll dip the back of a spoon into melted bacon drippings and "dot" both sides of a warm biscuit with it, add a thick slice of tomato, salt/pepper...heaven! Try it!
What a beautiful person you are. I found your channel earlier this month, and watch it daily now. I'm an avid gardener, and it brings me much happiness!
My grandmother was Italian so tomatoes were her passion! When she would come visit me for a week in the summer, I would bake bread and oftentimes have homemade mayo, tomatoes and thinly sliced cucumbers and grandma always wanted mozzarella cheese too. Such a great memory, one of my favorite sandwiches and definitely her favorite sandwich, always made her smile. She would always tell me that I took after her father who was a truck farmer and loved gardening. She was so proud that I love Veda to garden. ❤️
grew up in ohio. we had a huge 3 family sized garden.my fondest childhood memory is up early morning weeding the garden with my grandmother, then grabbing the perfectly ripend tomato warmed from the morning sun and make a fresh white bread slathered in mayo and as much of that sun warmed tomato as i could cram into that sandwich. i would eat it outside under a huge shade tree .with every bite i'd closed my eyes tasting those flavors blending andthe warmth of sun in the tomato was like eating rays of sunshine. pure joy!
I was born and raised in Maine, but my mom was a true southern bred lady. We grew up on tomato 🍅 sandwiches, and now I live in SC, and I beg to differ, that the mater sandwich with Dukes mayo and salt and pepper is surely a Southern thang. It is the food of true royalty! LOVED YOUR APRON!
I just enjoyed my first of the year last night for supper it was amazing!! Toast, mayo, tomato, salt and pepper. (Sometimes I add fresh basil) I also wait all year for this. It is THE symbol of summer for me. Nothing like it. 🍅
One of my favorites! Nothing like that first tomato sandwich of the year......ahhh memories...tomato sandwich...tomato gravy....brings back every memory of being on my grandpa & grandmas farm every summer....and since I have been grown I grow my own each year. Yum!
@@breezybest6064 yes so good, make it the same way just with cucumbers. And I'm not a big tomato fan either. I am growing a few varieties in our garden this year to find something I like.
I learned to eat “tomato toast”. A neighbor, originally from Germany, taught me. You toast 2 pieces of bread, spread butter on the toast, slice a homegrown tomato, place 1-2 slices (depending on the size of the tomato) on each piece of bread, and sprinkle salt and pepper. The. Best. Ever.
Oy my mouth is watering I’m a few weeks away. I actually eat mine open faced so I can have two😉 Seeded Italian toasted, mayo, maldon flake salt sometimes pepper. I love the dark tomatoes the best ❤️ As the season progresses I’ll start adding smashed avocado... but the first one is pure - CANT WAIT!
My Momma used to eat tomato sandwiches as often as we could afford them. Now I make them with my Daughters and I share my first experiences. Huge slice of tomato, for sure! This will be the first year in our new home where I can grow our tomatoes. I will cry when I make my first sandwich. Thank you for this video.
We love tomatoe sandwiches up here in Alberta!! We make sourdough from scratch and lots of mayo! We eat ours open face to save on calories haha!! So good
Duke's Mayo? Now I know you're from the South. It was always Hellman's in New York and then I moved to New Hampshire and it was Cain's then I moved down south and it's Duke Mayonnaise.
I grew up in Massachusetts and have lived in Michigan for the past 25 years. I never heard of a tomato sandwich until a neighbor who grew up in Minnesota told me about them. I LOVE them! White bread, mayo & salt and they are extra good when the tomato is fresh picked and still warm from the sun. I'm still a few weeks from ripe tomatoes up here.
I grew up in rural NY State and here we eat our tomato sandwiches with toast, mayo, lots of black pepper, American cheese, and tomato. That's how my dad taught me. Reminds me of my childhood. 🙂
I was in SC for a few years, I am born and raised in CT. I grew a garden with some Tomatoes. I asked a local woman friend if she would like a Tomato sandwich, SHE NEVER HEARD OF IT!! Make mine plain white bread, sliced tomatoes and salt and pepper!! Grilled cheese with Tomato is awesome too!!
Looks delicious! We did not grow up with mayo on, just thick butter, thick tomato slices and very often some cheese slices as well but I want to try the mayo option
Open faced sandwich: Garden tomatoes on a toasted piece of bread that is spread with olive tapenade, topped with fresh basil and drizzled with a good balsamic vinegar. 😋
I LOVE tomato sandwiches with or without bacon and definitely with Miracle Whip. Sometimes with salt and pepper. You're soo lucky to have tomatoes already. I started getting flowers here in SE Michigan. Just like you I never buy store bought tomatoes, not after growing my own. I go all year without them, they have zero taste.
Lately, to the mayo, (I like alot more), & salt, I add freshly ground black pepper, fresh purple basil from my garden, & balsamic vinegar with a touch of olive oil; words do not suffice! And have we ever got a long growing season here in Georgia. I've been on this beautiful earth for 66 yrs & a tomato sandwich may be my top favorite treat! It's simplicity adds to the wonder of it. (I keep wanting to write that it would be my last meal request if I was ever asked~ lol!)
White bread, lots of mayo, red garden tomatoes, and salt. We only ate them in the summer. I thought it was to reduce our meat bill but we all enjoyed them immensely. My father's family came from the south so I think he brought the idea to the family. Thanks for sharing.
So many comments and the conversation continues...Like other posters, I teared up while viewing this video! We LOVE tomato sandwiches in our family--so much so that I am doing an experiment. I have kept 2 Golden Jubilee tomatoes and 2 of my volunteer cherry tomato cuttings alive ALL winter (in my bathroom), just so I can have a head start on our tomato harvest for the year--I hope it works...I don't eat grain anymore, but I make my own Cashew Butter bread, toast it, add a swipe of mayo, salt/pepper, and whatever tomato variety I choose from the garden, and wander into my blissful 'happy place.'
I totally understand and am so with you on the importance of memorializing the first proper tomato sandwich of the year. It's is a diving gift. I am so happy for you. Eagerly awaiting our first tomatoes, though we're nearly a month away here in Washington state. Though I grew up farming and always grew tomatoes for friends and family , I am just now at 31 years young coming to appreciate the magistracy of the home grown tomato. Like you, I will only accept the divine fruit of the homegrown tomato. There is nothing in this world like a juicy BLT or some fat slicers with good balsamic vinegar and a little salt. The most divine salad. Cheers, Jess. You've earned it!
Yumm! Grew up with white bread, plenty of mayo, tomato, onion, salt and pepper. Watching your joy eating that first tomato sandwich of the year was adorable. Thanks for sharing.
I grew up eating tomato sandwiches. My grandfather would slice a tomato and put gravy on it for breakfast. He made it look so good when he ate it. Great memory! I love it as well! Thanks for sharing. I had a tomato sandwich for my lunch today. Yummy.
Cucumbers as a side adds a fresh crunch!!! True country lunch. Ok,,,, process the bacon or country ham into your mayo,,, toast only one side of your bread,,, fresh beet greens,, fat slice of tomato,,,beet greens,,, cucumber slices,,, game on!! Put the toasted side of bread toward inside of sandwich so things don't slide around. Those dark green beet tops add a nice freshness. The cucumbers crunch and light flavor help with the fatty mayo not overwhelming. The bacon/ham in the mayo,,,,if not a meat eater, could do avocado in its place. When you have this simple country lunch you know it's going to be a great day!!!!! Jess, you opened up many peoples eyes to why gardeners do what we do.
Honey oat bread, ranch dressing, salt, pepper, mozzarella cheese, basil leaves and tomato! Pretty much a caprese salad sandwich. I'm not a huge fan of mayo, but I love ranch dressing. P.S. regular tomato sandwiches are still very good, even with the mayo. 😉😉
Sourdough bread, toasted. Lots of mayo (best foods), thick sliced red tomato, crisp bacon, romaine lettuce. I could eat that breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I am the oldest of six and my dad had huge gardens growing up. The thing he always fixed us was a potato tomato sandwich. Toasted white bread, Mayo on both slices, thin sliced potatoes raw, tomato slices and salt and pepper. Yummy 😋 I still eat them today!
One of my fondest memories of how resourceful my great-grandmother was, is one time when a van full of family showing up unexpectedly one Saturday afternoon. Nanny had me go out to the garden and pick as many ripe slicers as I could find, and she made the biggest platter of tomato sandwiches I have ever seen. Everyone was happy as pigs in mud with all that tomato goodness dripping down their chins. I like my tomato sandwiches on white bread with a good amount of mayonnaise, and salt and pepper. If the tomatoes aren't still warm from being kissed by the sun, I will set them in a glass of hot water for a few minutes to warm them back up.
I love tomato sandwiches 😍 Mayo, tomato, salt & pepper, used to be white bread but now a keto alternative. Thanks so much for sharing all that you do. Just found your videos as well as Meg & Ben's and Mike & Lacy. Love watching all of you. Aka: Theresa
I grew my first ever tomatoes this year, and ate my first EVER tomato toasted sandwhich. I was completely BLOWN AWAY at how DELICIOUS it was! I have never been a big fan of tomatoes, but after having a homegrown tomato I am so EXCITED for next years tomatoes, I'm probably going to grow ALOT more next year hahahaha
I was raised in Canada, in a very British family. My perfect tomato sandwich: English Muffin - toasted, Mayo, Salt & Pepper. (the shape of the english muffin is perfect for the tomato) Love your channel, thanks for sharing :)
Jess, there’s nothing better than a fresh ripe tomato from the garden between two slices of toasted bread with some mayo sprinkled with some salt n pepper! Yuuummmmm
My first introduction to a tomato "sandwich" was when my grandfather made me lunch one day with his own home grown tomatoes. He put it on a slice of French bread and with a slice american cheese and some salt. While I love me a white bread, tomato, mayo sandwich, this memory and the taste of my grandfather's tomatoes is the main reason I decided to grow my own tomatoes this year.
Yes - tomato sandwiches are the best!! We do toasted bread, mayo, fresh tomato, salt, pepper and a bit of onion powder! 🤩 (used to add bacon occasionally)
I grew up on a farm here in northern michigan.. omg nothing was better than running off the school bus into the garden and grabbing our veggie stand supplies and snagging a fat MATER for myself ...
Toasted sourdough bread homegrown tomatoes with mayonnaise, salted to taste is my very favourite sandwich, hands down! My mouth is watering watching and listening... I’m a west coast Canadian
I'm an Okie who has lived in CA most of my life, but it was my OK grandmother who introduced me to tomato sandwiches. I like mine on untoasted white bread with lots of mayo, several thin slices of tomato topped with kosher salt because it makes the sandwich juicier and more tomato-y. I, too, don't eat any tomatoes that I haven't grown. The last time I did, I swore of even the heirloom tomatoes in the store because they didn't have that sunshiny flavor I love.
In Poland we eat an open face tomato sandwich on homemade rye bread, instead of mayo we use butter. Salt and pepper on top. Brings me back every year when I grow my own. I also don't eat tomatoes (and cucumbers) off season. It makes it extra special to finally have that delicious tomato sandwich. I'm in zone 5 so the wait each year seems like forever but oh so worth it!
As a little girl, Granny, momma & I would walk to the garden w/a salt shaker. We’d bite into tomatoes, fresh off the vine, like apples. I like pepper on my sandwich & never toast the bread; the rest is the same! 💛
Toasted buttermilk bread, mayo, sliced tomato with salt, pepper and thinly sliced red onion! I have been eating tomato sandwiches for years. From California.
Omg I keep hearing how you love tomato sandwiches so I had to make one. That was not a good idea. I dreamt about it all nicer and couldn’t wait to have one for breakfast.😂😂😂😂😂
Toasted Bread, buttered, freshly garden ripen tomato, with salt and pepper. Sometime mayo added. A Radish sandwich is great to but that has to be on buttered bread with sliced radishes to cover the whole slice of bread >not toast. Salt and pepper to taste. My Mother always ate these. Two great sandwiches!
I was introduced to the tomato sandwich while doing an internship in Turkey. I frequently had them for BREAKFAST. A nice bakery style roll (like a tiny loaf of Italian bread), with whole salad-sized tomato, sliced and shingled with sheepsmilk cheese (kinda like feta) and a whole, long, skinny, green chili. sometimes the chili was mild, sometimes it was a raging inferno. Who doesn't want to play Turkish Roulette for breakfast? Now that I'm home in Pennsylvania I'll use whatever type of bread I have, whatever tomato is ready and feta cheese and salt. p.s. your tomato-ness is such an inspiration! I'm watching your old videos as I prepare for this year's garden.
I don't think I've ever teared up watching someone eat a tomato sandwich before, but your joy is so palpable.
Allisone Brussin ya, I know. Me too😉
Allisone Brussin Me too!
Omg I did too
I teared up because mine aren't ripe yet lol.
The joy of the Lord 💕
Raised I'm florida born in Cuba.. Cubans eat their 🍅 sandwich with toasted bread. Couple slices of red onions, tomato, salt and olive oil! Yum.! Lol
ari gonzalez Toasted bread ONLY. So good.
For some reason i never thought about putting onions on one, gotta try this
This sounds really good
Olive oil instead of mayo. Sounds amazing.
Hey thx, will try it in the am...

It’s the juice dripping down the elbow for me 🤤
Yummy! Thats exactly why I grow tomatoes in the first place.
Bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches...mayo and toasted white bread! Yum yum!

White bread not toasted with salt and pepper and heavy on the mayonnaise
Luciann Schankweiler my mom ate it the same way.
Same !!!
Agreed!
Also very much agree Luciann
Absolutely what I was going to say! But the bread has to be fresh!

I love tomato sandwiches. 45 years of eating them, never better. That's comfort food!!!
There is NOTHING like home grown tomatoes!!! Tomatoes are also MY favorite thing to grow in the garden. I tend to plant way more then I need :)
Grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches are so good!
Wheat bread, slice of onion, slice of cheese, slice of tomato, heavy on the mayo, salt and pepper.....YUM! This is making my mouth water. Lol
I was raised in Canada, in a very British family. My perfect tomato sandwich: English Muffin - toasted, Mayo, Salt & Pepper. (the shape of the english muffin is perfect for the tomato) Love your channel, thanks for sharing :)
The smash down is a real thing after being made and before the first bite! My favorite too.
Ive never heard of tomato sandwiches and I LOVE tomatoes. I’m growing them for the first time ever so I can’t wait!!!
Jess, there’s nothing better than a fresh ripe tomato from the garden between two slices of toasted bread with some mayo sprinkled with some salt n pepper! Yuuummmmm
I love how the yellow, white and dark red flowers on the table match the colors of the tomato, bacon and mayo :D
Wow! And I thought I was extremely color~observant!!
Multi grain bread toasted, mayo, tomato, avocado, salt, pepper....Yummy!
I love getting to be in your kitchen! I know it’s not your favorite kind of video to shoot- but I’m grateful!
Yes - tomato sandwiches are the best!! We do toasted bread, mayo, fresh tomato, salt, pepper and a bit of onion powder! 🤩 (used to add bacon occasionally)
I LOVE tomato sandwiches...white bread (not toasted), mayo, home grown tomato and salt! It's the sandwich of summer!
Thank you for always being so bubbly and for having informative videos.
I love how you are so happy, it's very encouraging , you are an inspiration for us all. Amen.
Omg I suddenly started craving for this delicious tomato with roasted garlic aoli, sweet basil leaves and thin slices of medium rare ribeye!!!!
