    A little correction and a small fact about Drachen Fire I found out not too long ago: is that the ride wasn't actually a copy of B&Ms layout was but was in fact a custom layout that Busch gardens Williamsburg came up with themselves along with Ron Toomer. You see originally Arrow Dynamics offered Busch gardens one of their mega looping coaster models but Busch gardens Williamsburg declined the offer because they felt that it will look too similar to Anaconda at Kings Dominion so instead they got a full custom layout with a brand-new support structure. B&M was a brand new company which at the time they were busy working with Six flags on their inverted Batman model so they didn't get to work with Busch gardens until after Drachen Fire's construction. And plus Busch gardens had more experience with arrow and trust.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin Год назад +14

      ElToroRyan set us straight about that a little while ago. The legend of Drachen Fire being derived from a B&M design makes sense because in many ways, its layout resembles a B&M looper. But it seems that Arrow was just trying to generally keep up with the times.

    Great video! The last time I went to BGW was in 1997 and Alpengeist had just opened. An excellent invert but my last five rides of the night were on the Big Bad Wolf! I loved traveling at the speed of fright, especially at night. Finally unless the Lochness Monster has been retracked it really beats you up. I'll still ride it for nostalgia's sake. So we got in line for Loch Ness Monster and the second my butt hit the train seat, the ride broke down and I got out of it 😁

    I loved Big Bad Wolf. Loch Ness was too rough the last I was there, but that may have been because my 12 year old son wanted to marathon it after his first ride. Sitting in the middle of the train and not being able to brace my neck for tight turns was horrible.

    I doubt it will ever happen but I would LOVE to see BGW give Pantheon some better theming and landscaping. I'd love to see an ancient Roman hall for the loading station, Roman gardens (as an extension of the gardens elsewhere in Italy area) in the queue and some rock work, ancient ruins, water features and sculptures of the gods throughout the layout.

    I love telling this story: my dad finessed me into riding Big bad wolf in 2001 when I was 4 years old because he told me there was “a princess castle” by the ride (aka the Bavarian village) and I was PISSED. I remember crying the whole time, but apparently I stopped screaming and my dad thought I stopped breathing. Was terrified of coasters after that. But I gave it another try at 8 and now I’m bitter it’s gone because I loved it

    • @Wildman88AA
      @Wildman88AA 2 месяца назад

      It was my first roller coaster too. Similar story, there was a hat in a gift shop that I simply had to have; the catch, my father wouldn’t buy it for me unless I rode the roller coaster. So at around age 6 or 7, I got in, screamed and prayed with my eyes closed the whole time, and won my hat. It grew to be my favorite coaster of all time. The theming was impeccable. Smooth. Nostalgia. Plot. BBW had it all. Coincidentally, I ended up in the park unknowingly on the day it made its last run. I have a photograph of myself and my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, standing beside the sign, and it’s framed in a BBW frame we purchased at the gift shop. This ride was absolutely legendary, and my heart breaks a little each time I go and see that it’s missing. Verbolten is great, but I feel like the engineers really missed the opportunity to revitalize, and introduce the Bigger Badder Wolf. Too many elements lost. To those who never got to experience it: I’m sorry, and I guess you just had to be there.

  • @VBshredder
    @VBshredder 4 дня назад

    Great list! I may have put BBW higher. Pound for pound it was elite. No coaster with 80ft max drop, no inversions, and minimal airtime (final drop delivered some) can be expected to be elite, but it was all so well done, culminating in that *perfect* 2nd drop over the river. Most thrilling drop under 100ft i've ever encountered.
    Side note - Dat shirt in your pantheon section: "Driver Ride Repeat" .... that's what i'm talking about! So many rides, of all kinds! Preferably make the trip with your partner of choice!

    BGW was my home park when I was in college in the late 1980s, I went back there for some friends' wedding in the early 1990s, and as such, it was formative in my early riding of coasters. Big Bad Wolf was not my first coaster but was the first coaster I ever really *loved*. Loch Ness Monster was my first looper and the ride that taught me that loopers were awesome and I liked them. Though I haven't ridden it in many years, I still rate it as one of my all-time favorites. But I haven't ridden any of their post-Drachen-Fire rides.
    I have such complicated feelings about Drachen Fire. I kind of loved it when it rode it, because the layout was tremendous, but it also hurt me. And in hindsight, it put me off riding coasters for many years because, with my limited experience of the modern coasters of the 1990s, I assumed that kind of beating was what I could expect from them. It was only many years later that I realized that Drachen Fire was unusual and was considered a mistake. But reading online about its history around 2010 or 2011 was also one of the things that got me into the online coaster fandom.

It scared the shit out of me and I loved it. And my second was The Wild Cat in Playland, NY that same summer, relocated from Virginia! How fitting! I went back and rode Big Bad Wolf many times after my first visit, and I think I like Verbolten better, which is surprising to me as well! Love Alpgengheist in the front, love Apollo in the back or front. Griffon is perfect. Loch Ness's first drop is perfect.

    Just went to Busch Gardens Williamsburg last Friday and I think your list is pretty solid. Darkoaster is fun, but nothing special. Back row on Apollo's Chariot was incredible! Griffon definitely beats Valravn. Alpengeist was intense! I did not expect the cobra roll to hit so hard. Loch Ness in the back row and its negative G's at the bottom of the loops... Ugh. Definitely ride Tempesto in the back. And Pantheon... Holy crap! Rode it 3 times and it's good all over. The outerbanked hill after the top hat is insane!
    Drove by Dominion on the way home. Should've stopped to ride Intimidator... 🫤

    Drachen Fire is surely top 10, maybe even as high as 5. Although after saying that can't really dig in to how rough my last ride on Alpengeist was, though that was whole body. Did want to take DF very seriously because it could possibly hurt you permanently. Amazed it lasted as long as it did in retrospect -- although in a few more years a lot of B&Ms will be as rough as the Arrows left around.

    I love roller coasters, but I’m afraid of heights. I think it would be cool and helpful to do some kind of list of coasters in the same park whose drops gradually increase. So far I’ve worked my way up to Iron Rattler, but one day I wanna ride millennium force, fury 325, and even Kingda Ka.
