    I never understand why all coasters can't be themed... It elevates the ride experience and if you're gonna spend $10-50M on a coaster, why not put 100K into the theming, doesn't have to be a complicated story, just make it look nice and make the queue intimidating.
    I'm thinking Maverick at Cedar Point, Demon at Great America, Oblivion at Alton Towers.

    • @fo-ef8qo
      @fo-ef8qo 2 года назад +12

      maybe it's a time thing in part. Rollercoaster usually are erected in about, what, 1 years time? of course most of the parts are prefabricated, but finishing a station to look nice is a lot more time than just a concrete pad with a roof and open walls

    • @AirtimeThrills

      I think SFFT figured this out and has been investing the money in not overly involved but still effective theming

      You also have to count in the upkeep of the themed elements. It can make it look even worse when they don’t work.

    • @ItsSiebay
      @ItsSiebay 2 года назад +4

      Think about it. A park will only spend what they think it’s worth to bring people in and make a profit. A good coaster without theming will bring in more people than a decent coaster with lots of theming.
      It saves them money to go out more for the coaster itself, and the general public don’t really care that much as long as they enjoyed the ride.

    • @Tamwyn107
      @Tamwyn107 2 года назад

      @@ItsSiebay That is a common disbelief, because the average people will spend more on immersive experiences, the feeling of magical moments etc. Especially in this time.
      But to built this up you have to invest more from the beginning and later on. So the question is which economical strategy you want to follow and what the investors expect from you and your themepark chain to do.
      In Western Europe you can’t run themeparks like six flags so easily, cause there are many nicely themed parks a few hours away and people always spend more on these.
      Especially in this times, where we follow the “logic of the special”, where are on instagram and all the social media.

    I think the best themed coaster in the US is the Matterhorn. unlike every other mountain coaster at Disneyland and Disney world, it doesn’t rely on darkness (outside of the lift hill). Every inch of that mountain has rockwork, and it is much appreciated. Plus those waterfalls add a great dynamic. AND that first snowman animatronic is AGRESSIVE AND LOUD and I love that thing. But yeah, awesome video!

That ride sign with the fog going, the Irish styled grave stones in the line queue along with the massive Son of Beast tombstone with the eternal flame, the creepy haunted church theme of the loading station, and of course the Banshee scream at the top of the lift hill. I am really surprised to not see Loch Ness Monster from Busch Gardens Williamsburg on this list, but at the same time, not surprised as they don’t theme it the way they used to. The queue is the same but I remember as a kid that the helix in the tunnel was so memorable because as you enter the tunnel, you would see on the wall lights, and as you got farther and farther, you realize that those lights were the body of the Loch Ness Monster, and just as you are realizing it, it’s about time to exit the tunnel, and at the end of the tunnel, the lights culminate in the head of the monster, who then blows smoke in your face from his nostrils as you exit the tunnel. There would also be flashing lights and sound effects of thunder and the monster. I’ll never forget that as a kid and I’m sad that they don’t theme it that way anymore.

    Great idea for a list! You're absolutely right that the majority of parks in America stick to the "amusement" aesthetic instead of the "theme" aesthetic, so there's just not a lot of examples. I think TIme Traveler deserves a spot around number 5, but it's hard to ignore how the theming is so unfinished. Great concept, and the execution they did do is top notch, but once on the ride it feels apparent that they had more planned and just ran out of money (the brake run before the first launch really seems like it was meant to have a show sequence built around it). And as long as Verbolten is number one, I think it's worth mentioning Cobra's Curse at their sister park. Great queue, and decent theming on the ride itself as well.

    i was thinking back on this video the other day and it had me realizing that a clever part of the excellent theming and storytelling of time traveler is in the layout of the ride itself. the twists, turns, and inversions combined with the spinning aspect make for a unique, out-of-control feeling that seems fitting for the experience of traveling through time. though the sudden pause in the middle of the ride before the first launch is strange, i think it represents having reached a different point in time before the time machine takes off again to bring you back to the characters’ present. i think it’s pretty clever and unique and makes me love that ride a whole lot more, and i do wonder if this something that anyone else has picked up on. great video!

    The entire theme of Copperhead Strike is moonshine. Everything is a winking reference. The White Lightening signs, the "snakes" which are actually just the coils coming out of the stills, the copper tops which were put over the barrels before they sold them, and finally the truck escape from the distillery from the cops when they get busted. You even hear the police radio at the end of the ride talking about how they got away this time. It's a little adult, and in real life everything was spoken about in code, so I love that they did it this way. I was blown away when I stood in line and it dawned on me. But I was raised in NC, so I get how a lot of people who aren't local might miss it.

    While there's not much theming during the actual ride (as is the case with most of these coasters), I have always appreciated the queue and station for the two Mr. Freeze coasters. And now that the Texas version is running forward again, I really do hope Six Flags keeps the one in St. Louis as a backward experience.

  • @MattMcIrvin

    I wouldn't call Wicked Cyclone's theming great theming so much as "SOME theming, which is way more than you usually get from Six Flags." It's cute.
    A dark horse I'd mention is Untamed at Canobie Lake Park! It's a standard small Gerstlauer Eurofighter, but the station is decorated like a backwoods hunting lodge with antlers everywhere, there are hand-carved little bear statues all around the queue fencing, the cars themselves are themed to bears and the track supports are painted like birch trunks with a silvery bark pattern, under dark green track. While the theming apart from the paint is mostly limited to the queue and station, I think the theming there is better than several on this list.

    Noticing again how having Phantasialand as my home park just makes almost everything else look acceptable at best 😀 I mean, Black Mamba wouldn't be half as great of a ride if it hadn't the entire landscape it sits in literally built around it. nice list! and also a good call to exclude disney and universal, since you got to highlight some lesser known coasters.

    7:27, they’re actually not aliens in the KI version. They’re guest who have been abducted. Most of them are actually still wearing old paramount shirts and gear, it’s just super hard to notice with the foggy glass and them being wrapped.

    I feel like Cobra's Curse at Bush Gardens Tampa deserved to be on this list. It has a well themed queue, with live animals and a room with a show in it. Not to mention the massive snake statue, and themed pre-elevator lift section with on ride audio.

    One thing you missed about Wicked cyclone was that when it opened, the TVs in the queue displayed weather reports that got increasingly distorted as you traveled thru the queue to imitate the progression of a real storm being covered in real time

    I think there are a few misses here:
    Kingda Ka with the whole golden kingdom.
    Cobras Curse at BGT, excellent theming with that giant snake on the ride.
    Just the 2 that came to mind quickly. Great job on the video

    ...oh, oh, it's a kiddie/family coaster so enthusiasts don't think much about it, but the Polar Coaster at Story Land actually has an amazingly themed station that looks like some kind of ice cave with penguins. There's an observation area on top of it that you can climb up to to just watch the coaster run. And the front car in the train is themed like a walrus.
    Worldwide, this list would probably be dominated by European coasters, mostly in Germany. It seems like Disney-level theming is a typical thrill-park thing there.

    I would've thought flight of fear would've placed higher. Especially the coaster at kings island. Pre show and themeing is pretty spot on throughout the queue, separate stations for added ambience, and themeing in the old photo booth area tying the entire park together.

    I would say Manta at Seaworld Orlando should've made the list. No way most of these beat that aquarium que when talking theaming exclusively. The argument could be made for Manta to at least crack top 5 even when you include Universal and Disney.
    Also while some might not consider them coaster credits (I do though) the pretzel coaster-dark rides (Hawnted House, Devil's Den, 2 story Wacky Shacks featuring gravity drops) should have at least gotten honourable mentions.
