Bob Dylan - With God on Our Side [MTV Unplugged Rehearsal, 1994]

- This version is haunting. I credit that to the slow tempo, the beautiful organ and pedal string guitar, and the ambiance of the surround sound system. Dylan's voice is also in fine form for '94. I was surprised to see him hitting those high notes so well. I kind of got lost in this performance; before I knew it, 10 minutes had passed.
This was recorded on November 17, 1994, at Sony Music Studios in New York City, shortly before the official session. This tape is a second-generation VHS courtesy of one of the cameramen in the studio. More to come very soon!
Love & Peace,
~SP
Having been in a wheelchair in 1978, the concert hall let me in 1 hour before the doors opened. I watched Dylan and the band rehearse for one hour, while I was the only one there besides the stage hands and other workers. That was excellent day for me.
man thats awesome. did you talk to someone of the band? either way, seeing him rehearse and perform in the same night is something priceless.
That's so 😎
Wheel chairs rule, 🙂 I love you Martin. 💙
I envy that bro good for you
There are not many advantages that we disabled people have, but we have some. And those that we have are rare and beautiful moments.
I laugh when people say Bob Dylan can't sing. He sings with his soul.
That's why he is never ever off key...talk about a genius!
Those who believe Dylan cannot sing; it is they that cannot hear.
This is 30 years ago. He was certainly able to sing then, and most definitely when he started out. Now, it's very questionable in live situations. That's just reality.
@@stevebrooks4thHe is probably about 82, but would still sooner listen to him than anybody else.
@@stevebrooks4th Nowadays He's singing better than he was in the last 20 or something years
This rehearsal is better than many careers
Talk about a spot on comment Michael Klodnicki!...I don't think Bob ever stops singing or playing his harmonica even when he sleeps!
Well said Michael
I think I can truly say that this is an under-rated comment.
Great song. But of all the horrific wars and genocides over the past half century it wouldn't have killed or compromised him to come out against one or two of them.
That's funny.
Love him unplugged. Clean and straight to the heart
Exactly the best music,
No words to describe this gem of a person
The greatest poet of our times.
The Master, the Poet, the Philosopher, the High Priest, the Prophet, the one and only. Nobel prize for literature was more than befitting for this monumental lyricist of the modern times.
Says it how it is story teller of us mere mortals
Well said.he a genius. He a masterpiece writer.he a legend. Salute u bob.sarbat da bhala.
not sure about the high priest ,he is not catholic
High priests are found everywhere. It just means most holy or spiritual leader or conduit to the divine.
Well said indeed. I’ll humbly add wizard, magician, shaman.
No words to say how this man has been important for the entire humanity.
I agree .Throughout my life Dylan has been there.
Amazing & we're lucky to live at the same time as Bob .
Dylan brilliantly manages to capture the history of the world in one song here.
A shame the World's history is defined by war isn't it. People will always suffer so long as there is corruption, greed and lust for power.
Probably the most profound and soulful rehearsal ever anywhere
I am a french lady and this song which I feel makes me feel in peace with the word
bob dylan is a genious
Bob was 22 yrs old when he first recorded this🙏❤
bob is a genius with words. you just have to say, well done bob. thank you for putting thoughts and feelings into song.
Indeed
That is a beautiful rendition and his voice has such feeling here,
Bob Dylan desire album
Yes, so beautiful and haunting. This song presents us with such a paradox that is so unresolved to this day.
You are really gifted at this thing which a small group of people really appreciate. I am one of those people. Thank you for your efforts.
Agree
People don’t get Dylan. If you listen it’s very rewarding.
Me too
It's disappointing that the verse on the Holocaust was left out. Especially now. Americans need to be reminded, and in way too many cases educated about what happened and the road were on now.
@@warrdiddly21 I think the fact millions of people 'get Dylan' is why he has been one of the most famous and influential artists in the world since the 1960s.
I am here again, listening this song so sad and so wonderfuly sung for Bob... If all people listen this with the ear of the heart... Maybe how many things could change... God bless you, my dear Bob...I think yes, God is in your side and my side to, because, in spite of all difficulties, we can thank all the time.💖
This version is such a revelation. Dylan breaks open the incredible old song in such a powerfully expressive way. Just wish I could hear him sing the verse about Russia right about now.
Outstanding performance
Excellent, Dylans voice...so clear, so perfect.
He is such a brilliant man. I'm loving this version. 😊
What a completely different version here. It's really moving because of the slow tempo, his articulation of words, his empathy for the displaced and downtrodden, and those killer lyrics.
Thanks for posting it.
Some of the lyrics too are different.
Primary American POET of my time !! I am gratefully 74 yoa & still love him & this entire genre of the finest "folk/R&R."
It's nice to be able to hear Bob's acoustic guitar instead of being overwhelmed by the other instruments.
Love it nothing like him
Gifted I listened to Bob when I was 14 I'm 55 it's all meant alot to me the message is in the songs thanks Bob for your entertainment
What a powerful song and an amazing rendition.
I absolutely love this song and Bob Dylan. His voice is outstanding for this song.
Bob Dylan deserves all respect for his creation all over the years..never fade away...happy birthday
The ethereal sound of the 12 string, dual 6's, and/or a masterful use of the pedal steel, hits like a knife thru the heart.
yeah and bowing the bass, love it!
Like a pain that stops and starts , like a corkscrew to the heart ,( ever since we’ve been apart ) !
What a brilliant song, hits me differently from this era.
Thank God - Swingin´Pig is on our Side
Bob's music touches the soul and then some...everytime.
Only if you let it.
This song means a lot to me. I 'recorded' it on a cassette tape at the same time Dylan made this MTV Broadcast
This MTV Special (and it is "Special") should be rerelease on Blu ray with these extras, Gold dust music💎🔥👍
Love the slow tempo version of this song. Bob can do all. Thanks.
Actually, '94 is one of the peak vocal years for Bob, especially for the Never-Ending Tour.
It continued throughout the years, '95, '96 and '99.
Other years until 2007 had their moments too, but not as consistent as the mid to late 90s.
Of course, from 2013 started the probably greatest rebirth of the voice yet, and it finally showed on Rough And Rowdy Ways.
We hope Bob continues to improve, in the magical way he did it so far.
Yes!
I think he peaked in 2000
"With God On Our Side"
Oh, my name-it ain't nothin'
My age-it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the Constitution that T.r.u.m.p loves
Has God on its side
Oh, the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh, the country was young
With God on its side
The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side
The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side
The Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side
I've learned to hate the Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side
But now we got weapons
Of chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side
Through many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Joel Bi.den
Had God on his side
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And they fall to the floor
That if God's on our side
He'll stop the next war
(No way: PEOPLE choose, free will!)
God is not ‘in everything’, Bobby.
I adore the Rough and Rowdy Ways album.
70s dylan is really his peak
obvious old bob and old bob are...thevsame... timeless beauty... his music a gift to the world. lucky to live during hid\s lifetime. peas on earth H.B. BOB
Such beautiful music! Thankyou* With God on our side .😊
only Dylan can cut into your soul many other singers fall way short of making his songs have the same magic
Happy Birthday, Mr. Tambourine Man! God bless you! Follow singing wonderful songs to us!
Stripped down to the core of lyrics, voice and guitar in the forefront is Bob Dylan at his poetic best! Love this particular arrangement and delivery at this rehearsal so much. Also cool to include discussion at the end! Your uploads are always engaging and unique! Thank you so much! You have received some of the most thoughtful comments from subscribers and even other channel hosts which says you are doing it right and are appreciated like you should be. Cette chanson est une véritable méditation ,vous fermez les yeux et vous voilà connecté à notre essence divine n,ous ne faisons plus qu' un .I thankyou BobIlove you ....
Saw Bob in Rama, Ontario at Casino Rama, just brilliant 👏 👌
Love the fact that he wouldn't allow any jumbo tron big screens on the stage, no close ups to ditract you, just live music at it's best 🎼🎸🥁🎙
The way the organ blends into the pedal steel at times. Beautiful rendition
First time hearing this. Love it. Perfect song for today.
Hauntingly beautiful! Love the simplicity here. Thanks Swingin'🐷. Have a safe weekend 😎
Makes me know why Dylan was always my favorite. It's the heart that so resonates.
His determination shows itself to be alive and well in his voice. I can hear his anger, gear his love for our nation, question our faith and what it should stand for. A very much alive genre of musical genius. Thank you Bobby
This guy is no singer, he is a post modern day prophet. A voice in the wilderness
id hw had previous lives, one of them would have been Paul.
Totally agree!
I want to thank you properly, but I'm lost for words. I just know what it is you're doing is beyond our expectations and that you're the best at what you do for us the fans. Thank you pig god bless you 🙏❤
This, this right here is the best version of this beautifully poignant and reinvigorating song.
This song has always been of my favorites of his huge list of great songs. I've never listened to this version, although a bit different, it's beautiful. Thanks for the upload, it made the day of many fans!
I am revisiting this Swingin’ because it certainly deserves to be heard again and again! For a rehearsal it’s is such a moving delivery and Bob is so very earnest and convicting! To see the late Bucky Baxter on the pedal steel so in sync with Bob makes it even more precious! The sound is impeccable and everyone in the band enter so unobtrusively. The low droning of Tony Garnier’s bow on the stand up bass, the bright harmony of the organ, and the beautiful guitar strums and picking just fit so well! They should play this video in the churches because it is one of the best sermons which I think has God’s kiss upon it. What a lament! So wonderful that this was recorded! Thanks again Swingin’! ✨🤍✨🕊
Nissi K - Just judging by your picture, I'm so happy to see such a young person respectfully & eloquently praising Bob Dylan!!
You have well-educated appreciation of music and the beautiful, positive messages it can evoke.
Thank you!
You're so right on Nissi...Bob's life has "God's kiss upon it!...that's why so many people are so moved just "listening" to him.
I love the 90s sound. Full and wide but still dynamic. Best decade, especially for crossover music. 2000-2005 wasn't bad either, but then someone came with the idea to use every possible effect on vocals and now we are here.
You’ve given so much for the progress of the world! May happiness always be where you are. Your heart speaks for the world. 🌎
The world owes you a debt of thanks 🙏🏽 and gratitude. You are so adored… always.
Thanks for posting. So proud to come from the country that gave him the Nobel prize!
How brilliant and premonitory song !
Absolutely made my day
Thanks SP for putting this up!
Wonderful words ,thank you for the music.
Dylan was always on the side of peace and God! So I know God's on the side of Dylan!
I've been listening to you for years and love your music. Thank you!

Thank you 🙏
Great pick Swingin! It was very easy to get lost in this, so evocative. Sometimes I think Dylan chooses to sing in a certain way for whatever reason whether anyone likes it or not. Anyway he sounds great here! 😎
So true
Beautiful ! Thanks for posting.
As true today as it ever was.
The BEST VERSION EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this version...such raw emotion , brilliant 🤍
classic bob thank you for uploading man🇬🇧
Thank for your posting this version - beautiful!
What a legend.
thank you so much for sharing this! It is haunting, indeed...and his voice is better than it has been. Delicious.
God, I love this man!
Thanks SP. Yep it is a haunting performance.
"Masterpiece too often is just a silly word
is it something we've witnessed or something we heard
is it something that takes us or is it something we share
too often it is something that just dissolves in the air."
These are lyrics I wrote in one of my songs. I offer it here because this Dylan song, in its permanent written form and its now recorded splendor, is all these things if you hear it with your heart. Thank you, brother Bob.
Timeless song.
I first heard Bob Dylan in the late 1960s and thought he was rubbish. I’ve never been so wrong in my life. I absolutely love his music wether sung by him or other artists.
SP this is a precious gem performance and share!
Rehearsals are often better than the actual performance.
THE SAME!!!!!!!!! Love and peace.
Beautiful. a true masterpiece. as pertinent today (3.18.2022) as it was when it was written.
Yes even Judas Iscariot had God on his side. Love the depth of the song. Bob never disappoints me
Nobody does it better! Bob forever!
Thanks for sharing this! I love this version more than the original one.
keep your pop music. the is no soul in modern music anymore. i know i sound like my dad and i am 66. but please deny that music today lacks feeling. this has so much soul.
I can’t imagine not seeing you preform your lives stories many of those lives and poetry stories. I hope they both will be able to see. God Blesses you Bob Dylan everyday I’m just sure ❣️
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🙏
The start of this was actually inspired by an old Irish song called the "Tinkers crippled fingers" Still can be heard on halting sites across Europe.. thanks Bob..
Everything I've heard from Bob Dylan has been a rehearsal. One never-ending rehearsal. He keeps on keeping on and he's trying to try. With a head cold, his croaking reaches new heights. They say it's all in the timing. ;-)
You do realize your comment is hilarious.
@@wendyanne5894 yes, he makes me laugh out loud. However, I seriously love his Greatest Hits!
