You know with games like Redfall, Gollum, Kong, and The Day Before coming one after the other, daily or monthly throughout 2023, it's almost like they were trying to compete on who could make the worst game this year.
It's honestly annoying how many games stinked this year and as you said shadowlink it is like they were competing for who could make the worst game, heck there is one title that Rabbid didn't talk about that actually deserved a spot or an honorable mentions which was Avatar Quest for Balance which felt more of like an insult to the source material rather than a competent game apparently, if Rabbid hasn't looked at it, it might be worth a look for a potential stinker or a not stinker. I swear man the consistency of GameMill making irredeemable trash is outrageous, that you had two games on this list published by them with the Avatar game also being published by them, companies really need to stop giving GameMill big IPs unless they can deliver which occasionally they can with Cobra Kai and those Nick All Star sequels.
What's tragic about Forspoken is that it could have been great if it hadn't changed course during development. Apparently, the idea of Fray being transported to Athia was something the higher ups demanded they incorporate, which apparently threw off the story almost entirely. It makes me far more curious of what they had cooking if the whole isekai angle hadn't been implemented. It may have been a far more interesting story.
Forespoken was a game to represent woman power and push some stupid social agenda. Thats all it was. And we all saw it and that’s why it crashed and burned
It desperately needs to be mentioned that 2023 is the 90th anniversary of the original King Kong film. Not only was it barely celebrated with the game and a mediocre Netflix anime, but every other major Kaiju property had installments that have received immense amounts of praise. This includes Ultraman Blazar, Gamera: Rebirth, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla: Minus One. Also, the 2005 video game adaptation of the Peter Jackson Kong film does what RoK does but a million times better
I'm still disappointed that Greyhill Incident ended up as bad as it was. As a person who's been obsessed with the extraterrestrial since middle school, Greyhill Incident seemed right up my alley. Like you said, the game's concept of fighting an invasion of classic Grey Aliens is really cool. But the bad voice acting, nonsensical story, and agonizing gameplay just bog it down dramatically. Here's hoping They are Here is a good game. Also I want to add Enchanted Portals as an honorable mention. It's pretty much Cuphead, but bad.
If you're looking for an actually good horror game about aliens, I'd recommend Chordosis. It's only got one chapter out so far but the game is absolutely gorgeous and genuinely freaky.
Voices of the Void is pretty good if you're willing to let it bide its time. No main story, just a weeb in the woods collecting signals with sporadic bursts of sleep and the occasional breakdown of reality.
The tragic part about Gollum is that the studio is absolutely great and made lots of the most iconic point and click games. If they made this appoint and click it would have been so much hetter.
Its going to get to a point where the only way to release a worse game is to create one that freezes on the main menu, has a memory leak and sets your pc on fire.

I am not defending that pile of Stoor feces at all, but… I mean… what exactly did you expect from a game where you play as Gollum - one of the ugliest, saddest, most pathetic characters in nearly all fiction? None of the trailers seemed to show much promise or even any gameplay to be hyped for, just the fact that a Gollum game is being made. I mean, sure, those trailers were incredibly misleading about the game’s visuals, but I can think of many worse offenders of this all-too-common form of false advertising.
I feel like some good dishonorable mentions for title of what I dubbed “Lame of the Year” in one of streamer David Baron’s Enchanted Portals streams are the aforementioned Enchanted Portals, and all five of the Garten of Banban games.
Context for kong (kongtext) the game is based off of the joe devito novels which are backed by the estate of the og filmmakers, there are comics based on this also and they are better than this schlock, also a disney plus series is being made
I made mistake too but remember the Arkane that made Redfall is not the same Arkane that made all those other games. This was of Arkane Austin not Arkane Lyon. Who very different development teams in different countries. Blade is being made by Arkane Lyon who haven't made a bad game. The only other game the Austin team made was Pray 2017
Fun(ny) fact about Everybody 1-2-Switch: Apparently, internal testing on the game was severely negative. Too bad Nintendo is super stubborn. They even tried to justify releasing it by pricing it at only 30 dollars.
When Persona 5 Tactica uses new voice talent for its original characters and they do a good job, that makes Rockay City look like even more of a crime, boss. And that quip about asset flip horror games? The asset flip aspect *is* the horror, not anything they try to jumpscare in (that you'll see coming miles ahead).
To be fair to the people who made their lists of the worst games before, no one actually expected the Day Before to come out ever, so it caught us all off guard.
I figured Redfall was going to be the nail in Arkane's coffin as soon as it was announced. It's a shame because they used to be one of my favorite developers. Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Dishonored 1 & 2, and Prey (2017) were all great games (although most people don't seem to remember those first two), and they helped fill the void in immersive sims left by Looking Glass Studios' closure.
Oh boy oh boy, this is where the good stuff happens! And by good stuff, I mean bad games that are fun to laugh at. 10: Square’s custom-made engines must be cursed, because most of their games that use them suffer to varying degrees, and this is probably the worst one that does. I only played the demo, but that was enough for me to not want to touch the full release. 9: Only #9? Kinda surprising, since I’ve been hearing people absolutely trash this game and say that it’s the worst non-licensed game of the year, but I guess we all have our own opinions. How Arcane went from Deathloop to this boggles my mind. 8: Yup, this was always guaranteed to be here. I will say that this game can be fun if you can find a large enough group of people to play with, but if you can’t, don’t bother. The horse-head mascot also gives me the creeps. 7: Never heard of this one, it looks like yet another one of those cookie-cutter horror games that seem to come out every year. Next! 6: I remember seeing a trailer for this at the Game Awards one year (I think, it may have been Summer Game Fest), and I thought it looked kinda cool. Shame it turned out to be bad, I guess. 5: I remember when the show was big back over a decade ago, so I have to wonder why the hell this game was made in 2023. This feels like a game that started development six or seven years ago, but was put on hold and hastily rushed out in a month to make some extra cash. No thanks. 4: Never heard of this one either, but that may be for the best here. I don’t have anything else to say. 3: A comedy of errors like this makes for some of the purest fun I’ve had laughing at something this year. It sucks how terrible it is and how much the developers must’ve struggled to make the right deadline, but at least it can bring some kind of joy to me, even if only ironically. 2: See #3, but with winning arguments instead of JPEG cutscenes. 1: Oof, this one. I haven’t been following this one, but after watching a couple of videos on it, I don’t think this game has any competition for being the worst game of the year. How the hell did this happen when we had atrocities like #3 and #2 make us think it couldn’t possibly get any lower?

tbh, the thing you mentioned about the greyhill incident possibly being written by AI makes a ton of sense, especially since a lot of the paintings are AI art in which case, tbh that gives me a bit more respect for it weirdly like they took a batshit insane AI prompt, where you do shit like cover yourself in tinfoil to avoid alien brainwashing, and made a 100% serious game based on it
You missed one: Quantum Error. A bit of history with this game is that it got very little attention until this year when the developer of it decided to console war for some reason, after which it suddenly shot up in hype among the more die hard fanboys types. Some of the things people were saying did not age well. Like some said it was their most anticipated game of the year, some went all out on pushing the developer and the game. Right before release when the game went gold, DreamcastGuy tweeted "Let's GOOOOO" in response to the developer's tweet about it. Then the game came out and suddenly people got quiet. Turns out the game is laughably bad with visuals straight out of the 7th gen and utiliizing gimmicks from nearly 20 years ago. It was also quite buggy. Some reviewers got codes for the game and refused to release a review due to how bad it would be. The same DreamcastGuy that was so hyped put out a review saying that he was afraid that somebody might actually go out and buy it after hearing his review and if that happened, that he had failed as a reviewer. I would definitely put it up there near the top of the list among Gollum and King Kong.

Redfall I had some fun with and i'm not worried about Blade, Arkane kinda knew Redfall wasn't up to snuff and were actually hoping Microsoft would cancel it but no such luck.
I can get behind bringing in Chuck Norris purely if your trying to meme it up. Like if you knew in advance that it was going to come out and play up that up. In a similar vain there is a very good reason why John Claude Van Dam's voice lines for Johnny Cage in the new Mortal Combat are an optional voice pack.

It truly is special that I've watched several of these 'worst games of the year' lists and each one includes a few different choices just thanks to the sheer number of awful games we've had. I'd like to also suggest the Avatar: The Last Airbender game as well as Enchanted Portals!
I don't blame you for missing it, as it was a niche jrpg, but I'd stick Loop8 on a top worst list. Forspoken was cringey and bland, but Loop8 was just *boring*. Essentially a roguelike jrpg that tried to boast about in depth social mechanics, when it just boiled down to clicking through menus to raise stats and a shallow combat system with all of one single random encounter enemy type.
With the exception of Gollum, it's surprising that none of the bad games that were popular to talk about (Garten of BanBan, Enchanted Portals, and Goodbye Volcano High) didn't even make the list.

Kinda surprised Enchanted Portals isn't on here. The game garnered a lot of negative attention since it's original announcement, with many people calling it a blatant rip-off of Cuphead even though the devs confirmed it was one of their major inspirations (though considerint how much they took from Cuphead's book, yeah I don't think "inspiration" really fits). A lot of people, myself included, thought the game was cancelled due to backlash and its failed kickstarter. To everyone's surprise the game was released at the start of September 2023 to a harsh reception from critics and the community, and the quality is EXACTLY what you'd expect it to be from an inexperienced 2 person team attempting to make a game that's just like Cuphead.
The amount of games that used AI one way or another is absolutely horrific. I cannot believe we have fallen so fucking low. Execs are so determined to hoard money and not pay qualified people to make their game look somewhat good. Disgusting
Redfall pisses me off because, to me, this isn't Arkane's developers nor primarily Xbox's fault. Zenimax clearly had a live-service push and forced Redfall to exist, and by god you can tell. From the majority of the developers leaving Arkane Austin (meaning the devs behind Prey basically being long gone), to leadership saying "nothing is wrong, we don't need more time", to Xbox not verifying it's progress and allowing it to release... it's honestly awful. For what it's worth, Xbox is still responsible for not verifying it's game development status, but if the game itself was good... we wouldn't be here discussing it. Call it 80% Bethesda's fault and 20% Xbox's. The fact that Redfall shares the same list as Dishonored, Prey and Deathloop is a goddamn insult to the rest of them.
I honestly can’t believe that the gaming publisher responsible for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is still around to this day *and* continuing to make games (albeit under a new company name). Like… you’d think that after producing undeniable one of if not _THE_ worst video game(s) of all time, you would want to enter a completely different industry and never look back. Yeah... I have no idea of why Nintendo decided to make Everybody's 1,2,Switch and Detective Pikachu Returns. Like.... the gaming world would have been better off without them, and Nintendo wouldn't have wasted money on something so pointless. Funny thing about Everybody's 1-2 Switch is that a report came out and said that Nintendo's own internal focus groups were saying the game would ruin Nintendo's brand. It's why the game was given so little marketing.
King Kong and Gollum are terrible but harmless. The Day Before is actively predatory on top of being completely terrible. The only thing I'd change is that Diablo IV deserves to be on the list.

That case aside, if the devs are rushing to meet a deadline, they're usually not the ones who set it and don't have much input about what it should be.

The Day Before couldn’t have been anything other than number 1. It’s broken, it’s been panned across the globe, everyone is calling it a scam (because, it is), it went through development hell, it shut the creators down, it was removed from steam after 4 DAYS! We’ve seen some dreadful games. This is cyberpunk but if it didn’t get the next gen ports
Honestly, I really do think 2023 is one of the best years for gaming. A bad game is only a shame if people buy it expecting it to be good. Every bad game this year was a coerced to be bad besides red fall and starfield (but those are game pass games, so it’s not like a lot of people wasted $70 on them.)
For me, Kong will always be worse than Gollum. Say what you will about Gollum, I can at least say it had EFFORT put into the graphics, and can look at it without saying "Wow, this ps1 game looks awesome!". On top of that, it had a rather creative conversation system involving siding with one of your personas then trying to convince your other self to take your side- that was surprisingly original from an otherwise terrible game :o! Kong on the other hand? I can't even say anything redeemable about it. It sucks. It's crappy. It's awful. I swear the only effort put into it was the voice of the narrator, and even that was putting too much effort into it X/!

That's because the 2005 Peter Jackson game had Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, in charge of that game's development.

Sounds a lot like what happened with Ion Storm. Two branches of the same studio, and one of them made the good games.

You don't usually see indie games end up on lists like this, probably because they don't get the advertising that the big games get.
I'd say Forespoken was probably bland not bad. Not when compared to what really came out this year.
That and the engine looks just as good as Final Fantasy 15. Meaning DON'T USE SOMETHING SUPER COMPLICATED WHEN DOING SOMETHING AMBITIOUS

8: Yup, this was always guaranteed to be here. I will say that this game can be fun if you can find a large enough group of people to play with, but if you can’t, don’t bother. The horse-head mascot also gives me the creeps.

1: Oof, this one. I haven’t been following this one, but after watching a couple of videos on it, I don’t think this game has any competition for being the worst game of the year. How the hell did this happen when we had atrocities like #3 and #2 make us think it couldn’t possibly get any lower?

Crime Boss as one of the top 10 worst games of the year is one of the worst gaming takes I've ever seen
You missed one: Quantum Error. A bit of history with this game is that it got very little attention until this year when the developer of it decided to console war for some reason, after which it suddenly shot up in hype among the more die hard fanboys types. Some of the things people were saying did not age well. Like some said it was their most anticipated game of the year, some went all out on pushing the developer and the game. Right before release when the game went gold, DreamcastGuy tweeted "Let's GOOOOO" in response to the developer's tweet about it.
Then the game came out and suddenly people got quiet. Turns out the game is laughably bad with visuals straight out of the 7th gen and utiliizing gimmicks from nearly 20 years ago. It was also quite buggy. Some reviewers got codes for the game and refused to release a review due to how bad it would be. The same DreamcastGuy that was so hyped put out a review saying that he was afraid that somebody might actually go out and buy it after hearing his review and if that happened, that he had failed as a reviewer.
I would definitely put it up there near the top of the list among Gollum and King Kong.

I can get behind bringing in Chuck Norris purely if your trying to meme it up. Like if you knew in advance that it was going to come out and play up that up. In a similar vain there is a very good reason why John Claude Van Dam's voice lines for Johnny Cage in the new Mortal Combat are an optional voice pack.
2023 was a pretty special year for gaming if we consider the fact it makes the fall of the industry even faster than usual. So much utter fucking garbage and mediocrity. I really fucking wonder how rabbidluigi is going to try and conjure up a Top Best Games of 2023.

It truly is special that I've watched several of these 'worst games of the year' lists and each one includes a few different choices just thanks to the sheer number of awful games we've had. I'd like to also suggest the Avatar: The Last Airbender game as well as Enchanted Portals!
I don't blame you for missing it, as it was a niche jrpg, but I'd stick Loop8 on a top worst list. Forspoken was cringey and bland, but Loop8 was just *boring*. Essentially a roguelike jrpg that tried to boast about in depth social mechanics, when it just boiled down to clicking through menus to raise stats and a shallow combat system with all of one single random encounter enemy type.

2023 didn’t have a whole lot of good games, but it had a lot of incredible ones.
With the exception of Gollum, it's surprising that none of the bad games that were popular to talk about (Garten of BanBan, Enchanted Portals, and Goodbye Volcano High) didn't even make the list.
I look forward to these lists every year but more so this year. There were some absolute horror shows.

Kinda surprised Enchanted Portals isn't on here. The game garnered a lot of negative attention since it's original announcement, with many people calling it a blatant rip-off of Cuphead even though the devs confirmed it was one of their major inspirations (though considerint how much they took from Cuphead's book, yeah I don't think "inspiration" really fits). A lot of people, myself included, thought the game was cancelled due to backlash and its failed kickstarter. To everyone's surprise the game was released at the start of September 2023 to a harsh reception from critics and the community, and the quality is EXACTLY what you'd expect it to be from an inexperienced 2 person team attempting to make a game that's just like Cuphead.

Redfall pisses me off because, to me, this isn't Arkane's developers nor primarily Xbox's fault.
Zenimax clearly had a live-service push and forced Redfall to exist, and by god you can tell. From the majority of the developers leaving Arkane Austin (meaning the devs behind Prey basically being long gone), to leadership saying "nothing is wrong, we don't need more time", to Xbox not verifying it's progress and allowing it to release... it's honestly awful.
For what it's worth, Xbox is still responsible for not verifying it's game development status, but if the game itself was good... we wouldn't be here discussing it. Call it 80% Bethesda's fault and 20% Xbox's. The fact that Redfall shares the same list as Dishonored, Prey and Deathloop is a goddamn insult to the rest of them.
I honestly can’t believe that the gaming publisher responsible for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is still around to this day *and* continuing to make games (albeit under a new company name). Like… you’d think that after producing undeniable one of if not _THE_ worst video game(s) of all time, you would want to enter a completely different industry and never look back. Then again, I guess if you’re able to get away with releasing a severely unfinished product and selling it for actual money, why not make it your whole business? 🤷

Yeah Redfall after the first patch and forspoken are basically on the same level, sadly Redfall needed a patch for that so it def deserves to be lower.

Funny thing about Everybody's 1-2 Switch is that a report came out and said that Nintendo's own internal focus groups were saying the game would ruin Nintendo's brand.

That case aside, if the devs are rushing to meet a deadline, they're usually not the ones who set it and don't have much input about what it should be.

The Day Before couldn’t have been anything other than number 1. It’s broken, it’s been panned across the globe, everyone is calling it a scam (because, it is), it went through development hell, it shut the creators down, it was removed from steam after 4 DAYS! We’ve seen some dreadful games. This is cyberpunk but if it didn’t get the next gen ports
Honestly, I really do think 2023 is one of the best years for gaming. A bad game is only a shame if people buy it expecting it to be good. Every bad game this year was a coerced to be bad besides red fall and starfield (but those are game pass games, so it’s not like a lot of people wasted $70 on them.)

For me, Kong will always be worse than Gollum. Say what you will about Gollum, I can at least say it had EFFORT put into the graphics, and can look at it without saying "Wow, this ps1 game looks awesome!". On top of that, it had a rather creative conversation system involving siding with one of your personas then trying to convince your other self to take your side- that was surprisingly original from an otherwise terrible game :o!
Kong on the other hand? I can't even say anything redeemable about it. It sucks. It's crappy. It's awful. I swear the only effort put into it was the voice of the narrator, and even that was putting too much effort into it X/!
