Pf do the actual flying and also input command to the autopilot.
Pnf monitor the system and do all the ATC communications.
Captain and First officer will alternate their roles as Pf and Pnf between each flight.
Note that on takeoff Captain is always the person holding the throttle as Captain is the final decision maker to reject the takeoff if there is a problem.

Finally, a refreshing and very educational video without the constant Airbus vs Boeing bashing. I've flown on many aircraft since the DC8 I first flew on in '76 and the Dreamliner just takes the cake as being the most comfortable and gracious plane in the skies today. Those wings flex like a graceful bird taking flight, truly something to experience.

Thank you for all your inputs. I am a 15.000 hrs instructor/examiner on B737. Read my comments correct: fly ‘from time to time’ the machine with handflying. (Not all the time. Correct not in London airspace). Number one cause for worldwide accidents for decades now is: loss of control in flight. Believe me when I say: 2 times a year in the simulator is NOT enough to maintain handflying skills. When I board any aircraft in the world I just want a person that can handfly the machine without bursting into sweatty armpitts. The newest airliners worldwide are technological beauties. However, they still give you the freedom of flying them manually. Please pilots, do not loose those skills, they might save your life one day.

I have a question - dont pilots enjoy hand-flying these amazing machines at least during the climb? Why autopilot on so soon after take off? Hope you can explain thank you!

Avoids uneccessary pilot intervention which decreases risk of human error

Can be cost saving as well as airline SOP - autopilot manages the flight profile better. That included with the possible complex departure route (like noise abatement) lightens the load on the PF.

@@gregclarke6419 Interesting, thanks. Nice to get an insight into all this. Does this reliance on the autoflight systems cause degradation of primary flying skills?

@@CyberSystemOverload That is a good question. I would imaging this is addressed during their check-rides and simulation evaluations.

As much as I love watching pilots fly and this mode of flying I think the technology is obsolete and its so overengineered it cant be further engineered. I think research and development should be channeled towards safer lighter than air blimps with perhaps light jet propulsions for reasonable speeds for intercontinental travels.
