    Overview:
    The Roland VT-4 is an amazing tool to help turn your voice into an instrument. Messing around with the effects, pitch, and formant can truly "transform" your voice in many exciting ways.
    Pros: Portable, small footprint (about the size of two cell phones), hands on (no menus to scroll through), battery or usb powered, phantom power (for condenser mics), high quality audio interface (no need to have a separate interface or sound card), the effects are studio quality (love the reverb and harmony), multiple ways to route the signal for recording, controllable by midi (either through usb or external keyboard).
    Cons: Nothing as of yet
    I got mine from Sweetwater:

    I just got one last week. I love the effects it produces but every time I try to record a vocal track with it, it also picks up all my beat and drum patterns with my audio and I cant get a clean vocal take for the life of me. idk if I'm doing something wrong I've read the manual and got the driver installed right someone please help me! much appreciated. I'm just about to send it back if I cant get it fixed any advice will be very much appreciated!

    • @PhillyWatts
      @PhillyWatts  3 года назад +17

      In your DAW you should have 6 input options to record from. Mix (1-2) is the one you're most likely using. Change it to WET (3-4) for the effects to be recorded or DRY (5-6) for dry vocals only. Hope this helps!

    • @shadygrizzly
      @shadygrizzly 3 года назад +1

      @@PhillyWatts yes I've switched thru all of them but then once I I record my vocals it has the effects. And sounds good. But if I mute all the other tracks and only play the audio I recorded it plays back all the drums and beat pattern with my vocals and I cant figure how to just get my vocals by them self on a recording without getting the extra audio in the recording too. If that makes sense.

    • @PhillyWatts
      @PhillyWatts  3 года назад +12

      @@shadygrizzly sounds like you may be recording the MIX channel. When recording the mix channel it records everything. I would set your input to 3 or 4 for WET vocals only.

    hey, great review - just curious. how does the midi i/o work? say i have a 25 key controller with drum pads that i have connected to my computer, and want to implement the vt-4 presumably in between the controller and the computer. would the drum pad portion of the controller no longer be usable in the DAW and only the keys would be useful for the harmonizer function in the vt-4? or would i still be able to use the drum pads regardless of the vt-4 being in between?

      I actually use the VT-3 on PS4 for the purpose of vocal entertainment from time to time.. It looks as if the VT-4 is an upgraded version...
      And to the one asking about how to hook them up them up on console.. It would require a 5 channel mixer at least.. The mixer goes to the PS4, and the VT device goes to the mixer, your mic goes to the VT as well, so ensure you have a XLR mic, not a USB... Im not sure if the VT-4 is USB compatible.. Im not even sure if my settup method would work with the VT-4.. So far it looks like it should

    Thanks for the video. I just bought a Roland VT-4, and I love it. But your video really showed me what this thing can do, much better than the owners manual. You make it sound so easy, I'm just now getting ready to really check it out. Your video really opened my eyes as to the versitility of the unit. I am currently recording my debut album by myself at home. As I play 7 instruments, write, arrange, compose,produce and perform all of the music myself,singing,as much as I love it,is not my forte..... until now. This machine will make me sound like a true pro, without the giveaway sound one gets from Auto Tune itself. Thanks again..... Reverend Cecil B DeMeNTed...ps...no interest in offending you, but you are one hell of a hot guy as well. ROCK ON!

    • @PhillyWatts

      Great question! I'd say that yes, it is a gain, but I notice that, even when peaking a bit on the VT-4, it barely clips inside of my DAW. Maybe there is a limiter inside there or something? • @jdanielcramer
      @jdanielcramer 3 года назад

      Usually this occurs when the monitor signal (background music you’re hearing) leaks out of the headphones into your vocal mic. You could try headphones with better isolation like ‘closed back’ phones. I don’t have a VT-4 to test it but I doubt the audio track is leaking in the device itself.🤔

    Thanks for the great vid!
    Would this be suitable for live karaoke? I’m thinking especially about the autotune function and if it’s easy to make it sound like a natural voice.

    • @PhillyWatts
      @PhillyWatts  4 года назад +3

      Yes, but you'll have to use it in a subtle way and you'll have to know the key of each song being sung.
      The key wheel on the VT4 shows all major keys. In order to achieve minor keys, just go to the same major key and turn it 3 clicks to the right for the minor key. For example, for C minor go to C and turn the wheel 3 clicks to the right. Good luck my friend!

    I am getting a huge Hiss. I’ve tried a dynamic mic and condenser. No change. Terrible hissing sound.

    Can you use this as an interface to record vocals in presonus studio one?

    I wanted to ask , I wanted to have really good performances with a good vocal execution going toward it with my music too, I was wondering if there is a way I can get have a wireless mic connected toward the interfaces? And I was also thinking of getting the BOSS RC- 505 also for looping and live performances too, I just want to give the audience the field of my music and make them feel like they’re in the setting you know? What do you suggest? Is there such mic I can use wirelessly that’s connect to those interfaces or would I have to use an extension for the mic?

      Yes, there are plenty of wireless microphones that connect via 1/4 inch or xlr (which the VT-4 has both in a combo jack). A very cheap, but good one that I tried once before was from Fifine.

    but can it be used at the end of a current mic chain and bypass the build in preamp?

    • @PhillyWatts

      It does have 1/4 inch outs as well as a combo jack input. Not sure how you would bypass its preamp though.

      Philly Watts same way as say an focusrite scarlet 2i2. If you there connect an 1/4 jack it bypasses the mic preamp,
      I guess the VT4 does the same thing since it has a combo jack but can't find any info on it.

    Can you make a video detailing how to connect this up? Just how you have your mic, monitors, etc?

      Many of these audio reviews discuss nothing about how its connected with mic or mics, PC/Mac and more importantly a mixer in this case. And that has been frustrating to someone like me who is new to this.
      Also, can it be effectively used for livestreaming (and how would you connect it up)? Or is it just straight DAW record and mix on a laptop?

    Can it record in software like FL studio and pro tools

      youngguidance flores absolutely! It’s become my go to audio interface for recording vocals as well as for mixing on headphones. It has a super quiet noise floor, low latency, and great quality audio.
