I’ve been using Numbers for a while, and I didn’t know about that footer row tip. I’ve been making the totals row at the bottom without specifying it as a footer (which makes for extra - unnecessary - work, when you want to add a new data row right above the totals row.) Thanks, Gary!
Thanks Gary, I followed your instructions. What a difference! I migrated from years using excel in business. I was trying to make NUMBERS look and operate like EXCEL. Thanks for the tips!
Hey Gary, Many of your suggestions I have already taken onboard by trial and error but as always you find more elegant ways of achieving the same result. I would love to see a more in-depth tutorial of Numbers.
Thank you Gary! I have used Excel in the past but now am exclusively a Mac user. Have created a few Numbers tables & would have gone further with it by using the "Help" feature but it just confuses me more!! This is PERFECT and I will be using Numbers a lot more from now on thanks to your video!
Great introduction to Numbers. I watch your videos showing how to use a specific app or topic even if I think I know the topic only to find out I didn't know as much as I thought . Your discussion of footers in this video is a good example of not knowing as much as I thought. Had to lookup function STRIPDURATION shown in an example format window. It just sounded interesting. I probably won't use it but thanks to your video and looking it up, I'm aware of it should a need arise. Thanks for the great job.
Love these vids, so easy to follow. My questions are answered before I even form them. You’re a step ahead but you make it easy to catch up. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
THANK YOU Gary!! As ever, clear, concise, loaded and immensely helpful. My spouse and I LOVE YOU sooooo much, helping us in your retirement years optimally operate our computers. We make a 'date with Gary' to learn something almost every day!!! Sending HUGE HUGS 😉🥰
I love it how you can use different tables, like you explained. I think it makes numbers a more intuitive tool. My main wish for Numbers is that they make it possible to use data from different Numbers documents, like you can on excel, but I bet that would be a huge undertaking and unlikely to happen.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I hope you also can make one tutorial about using the standard templates that are pre-build in the Numbers app for keeping track of your own budget/finances.
Fantastic delivery, content and pace - I have been using Apple computers for decades in my work (Marine Scientist) but there is always room to learn ... as evidenced by dipping into one of your basic Intros. Many thx Gary.
Great video...I used the sort and filter functions many times, but wasn't aware of how powerful they were. As always, I've learned something new that I can use in my daily work. Thanks again!👍
Thank you, I have learned a little more. So thankful that you are showing this. It’s always nice to listen to someone who knows what he’s talking about, thank you 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thank you, Gary. This was a very helpful tutorial presented in your usual friendly teaching style which is appreciated. I know you offer a full Numbers course on your MacMost site, which I will be sure to check out.
Very well explained, Gary. Thank you for this lovely primer. I'm trying to move to Numbers (from you-know-which-app) and this sets out the concepts very well. Many thanks. Much appreciated.
Mac user since 1986. By the time Numbers came along, I like most other people had been using Excel for a number of years. My rule for new tech is, if it’s better than the old tech I’ll use it. I’ve tried several times to get into Numbers and frankly, it’s just not better than Excel. LibreOffice and Google Sheets basically follow the format of Excel, so I also use those spreadsheets. I guess my main problem with Numbers is that it changes many of the user procedures for formatting your spreadsheet without offering any real new benefits. I have to break old habits to learn something that gets me to the same place. I think Numbers is mostly for people who are brand new to using a spreadsheet and obviously use a Mac.
I used Excel and the like for years before Numbers. But the multi-table ability of Numbers makes it far more usable to me. Excel just looks archaic to me now. Like something from a previous era.
Thanks for this new video, using numbers daily i am very familiar but ... watching your videos is always a great benefit to learn a piece of new information, always 🙂
Another very helpful video. One thing that is likely very easy but I haven't worked out yet is if I select part of a Numbers table, copy it to the clipboard and then paste into a Pages document I get a table with that data. I generally want just the text with tabs separating the column data on each row. Even if I Paste and Match Style I still get a table in the Pages document. The work around I've been using is creating a new TextEdit document, do Paste and Match Style into it, select all, copy and then in the Pages document Paste and Match Style. I'd love a way to do this directly from Numbers to Pages.
Thank you for this very informative video. Although, it would be an EXTRA plus if there was a way to create an "X" strikethrough option from the Cell/Border Format selection. I create calendar logs and like to see when something has been accomplished & like to X off the cells once things have been completed. So, until "Numbers" app has an added option like that, I still prefer to use "Excel".
Thanks for your tutorial. I'm a creative and admittedly a bit math/spreadsheet challenged. I was doing really well using my newly created spread sheet when all of the sudden I couldn't get the thing to calculate. I have no idea what I could have done and am growing more and more frustrated. Any suggestions would be terrific.
Thank you, very helpful. My issue with Numbers is saving documents, especially when I go over the same doc to keep the format, and saveit as a NEW doc ??
So you want to use Save As? Hold the Option key down and look in the File menu. But it also sounds like you may want to create your own Numbers template instead.
Great info. One of the things I so often forget is when using a filter. Example: if you ask to filter out grades > 90 you wont be the one that are exactly 90. I used to use just such a sheet when teaching and had to learn the hard way I was excluding kids from the “A” group and adding too many to the “F” group. 😆
Absolutely fantastic video, thank you for this. Is it possible for a cell to contain a link to an external file on the desktop rather than a cloud/web link?
I taught myself a lot of this just by loading the premade templates and playing around with them until I could reverse engineer the formulas for dynamic tables.
Im brand new to this program. When i made a list i started at the very top. However i wanted to add some cushioning. How do i add more at the top and push my entire list down a bit ?
This is a great tutorial video. Thank you. One question though. In the section on formatting the date, can you create a different date format on the list? For example, I do genealogy and the standard format for the date is, day, month, year - 5 Jun 2022 (note the 3 letter abbreviation for the month). I did not see that format in the list. Can I create that format and add it to the list? Thank you.
Is there a way to paste a formula in MacOS Numbers? If there is, I can't find it -- I end up opening the spreadsheet in iPad Numbers. (Ask the forums & people say 'Paste & Match Style', but they obviously haven't checked).
thanks Gary . quick question... when i use command F to search something on numbers, I would always fail finding it if I did not put a capital letter in the beginning of the word if the word has a capital in the beginning to. Example if I am looking for the word "Arrive" in a numbers document, I would not find it if I searched "arrive" due to the capital . In pages this is not an issue. can you help please ? kevin x
Hi, i need to use Numbers for my daughter, she as a health activity And she must do the patient management. I just started tonight on my iPad Pro to make an application for his office. I feel like I’m limited to the NUmbers functions to do something simple. Do you have an idea to submit to me to start this project to follow up on customer appointments and billing? Thank you for your time and help
Sorry, I don't know from that description what it is you want to do. Usually "customer appointments and billing" isn't something you do in a spreadsheet but in an aop dedicated for that purpose.
Hi, I have a problem in Numbers, could you make a video explaining stuff needed for that? I have a personal budget for which I used a template contained in the Numbers (the one with the circle graph - real expenses - at the top left, column graph - budget x reality - next to it and a table detailing the categories at the bottom left) in the first sheet. There’s a sheet summarising the expenses and a transactions sheet for writing each expense. I want to have a summary for each month in a year (one summary sheet for January, one for February etc.). Right now I always duplicate both the summary and transactions sheet and reroute the summary to the new transactions sheet. I’d like to set the summary sheets in such a way that they all use the same transactions sheet but only select the transactions from the month related to them. But I don’t know how the correct syntax for the IF function (particularly the logical condition) to accomplish that. Or if you already made a video for this, can you give its name please?
very informative video. thanks. i have a question about cells. Is it possible to have like a ghost cell that when you cursor over it you have a hidden cell with say time in it that becomes viewable? Then when the cursor is moved it is no longer viewable. used to do that in excel before becoming exclusively a Mac user.
No, I've never seen anything like that. Why not just have that cell in another column? You could always hide that entire column if you don't need it at the moment.
I’ve been using iPhones since iPhone 3 and the iPad when it was introduced I never knew what a powerful tool I had and all the money wasted on M/s office 😡 Now I can keep track of my Wargames and passably show other players what they’ve won or last even during a game. Hello, thanks for the video, very useful. It's a pity that I didn't find it right away, as I started learning tables. I have a question, please tell me, is there a way to make an interconnected drop-down list like in google sheets? I am creating a table to track income and expenses and would like that when I select "income" or "expense" in one row, I would have different categories in the other row, depending on the first row? It would just be convenient to have just one quick command to immediately enter income or expense using a form. And if the list is general, then there are too many categories and it takes a long time to find the right one)
@@hook_off It doesn't do that. If Google Sheets can do it and you don't mind using something else, then sure why not. I use multiple tools for lots of things, but a lot of other people stick to just one.

Thank you for the help. I did not know I am able to have several tables on one page. But I am struggling with sum of a row. The header ist defined but still the formula adds the header row which is text. What do I miss?
Gary, I have a Numbers spread sheet I cant figure out, it is an estate budget sheet. I got it so it totals up certain columns. The problem i'm having is, that it rounds up or down the cents to the nearest dollar. I want it to show the actual amount in dollars and cents. Here are the 2 columns. Actual total is $103,059.21 it shows $103,059 & in menu bar it shows =SUBTOTAL(109,[Amount]) Another column is $95,623.54 it shows $95,624 & in menu bar it shows =SUBTOTAL(109,[Amount]) How can I fix this?
Sounds like the cell formatting is simply set to show 0 decimal places. Select those cells, then go to the Format sidebar, Cells and change that aspect of the cell formatting.
Is not the best video to ask that, but.. Is possible to create custom formulas on Numbers using javascript of script editor? Or even create custom formulas/functions using applescript? Thank you!
I am an old excel user. Retired just before the pandemic, moved my house to Apple products. I now wish to use Numbers... Think about a translation tutorial, to assist the many new converts like myself into a smooth migration.
Your videos have been very useful! I need help -- I got a pop-up when I tried opening my numbers file and it says 'The document "zzz.numbers" could not be opened. The volume "MAY 16 2018" couldn't be mounted. Mount the volume and try opening the document again.' The steps Apple gave in their forum didn't help. What do you suggest I do to get access to my numbers spreadsheet again? Thanks.
@@macmost It's not an external drive...unless I had saved the file in an external drive which I would have to dust it off from my bookshelf and connect it back to the Macbook, right? And what's a disk image? Thanks.
Question: If you have two tables side by side, and you decide to delete a row on the table on the left, what happens to the rows in the table to the right? Are they deleted as well?
