    UPDATE: My Lords of Shadow 2 video is still coming don't worry! I've finished the game and recorded it and I'm currently half way through editing it. Looking like it's going to be about 45-50 minutes long and hopefully will be out sometime next week! I've had some PC issues while I was doing my GTA Definitive Edition video that seem to be all sorted now (I had planned to do GTA after LoS2 but because those remasters turned out to be a shit show I decided to get it out of the way).

      You should talk about castlevania: harmony of despair. Its a 6 player cooperative sotn-styled castlevania game where you participate in simple raids trying to grow stronger and acquire the best equipment. Be sure to check out the unity port as well. LOS is a gem and the baseless hate its gotten by the community is honestly sad. Everyone who worked on this game put in incredible effort and it all had to go to waste just cus "it's not my SOTN".
    Been into the series since I was 5 and LOS is a lot closer to the original series than everyone on message boards likes to think. Like sure, it's way more LOTR than Iga's games but go back to the 8 and 16bit era and you'll find bits of Conan, DnD and LOTR in it's world and tone. Plus why is it accepted that SOTN rips off Metroid yet anytime they took inspiration from DMC or GOW it's so detrimental?
    Nice video giving the game a fair chance :)

    • @mykplaze193
      @mykplaze193  2 года назад +7

      Exactly this my friend! Castlevania was a well established franchise years before SOTN came and completely shook up the formula. Even when I first played Lords of Shadow I quickly realized that it had taken massive inspiration from Castlevania 4 in terms of level progression and platforming with the whips grappling hook.

      @NickTsatsalmas Год назад +3

      Well said! I also started with the first one on NES and couldn't agree more. This is one of the best Castlevanias out there. And one more thing: why do people even hold SOTN and metroidvanias to such high esteem? they're the ones deviating from the original Castlevania formula and IMHO are often boring.

      I really wanted to love this game. Had very high expectations because I enjoyed LoI and CoD, and hoped it would feel similar. I don’t remember comparing LoS to SotN, although I admit that the latter is one of my all-time favorite games and my first Castlevania.
      Interestingly, I did finish GoW1, but couldn’t say I enjoyed it. I found it boring and monotonous, so the similarity of LoS with it was very disappointing.
      I specially hated the boss fights with the button sequences. I think I decided to drop the game right after the Ice Titan fight.
      I still think LoI is far superior to LoS.
      Similar to you, I’ve never understood why GoW is so popular. It’s totally overrated for me.

  • @Calgiey

    Massively underated game.
    One ting that struck me about this game was the moral quandry of Good & Evil.
    The deeper you go into Shadow, the more you're in the home of the monsters. Simon actually starts to transition into the invader/monster.
    It was really really well done. The way you become the monster. I actually started to feel guilty for mercilessly destroying these shadow creatures, that hadn't even left their own "terrortory" ;)

    Very good review of what I think it's one of the best games in the franchise, even though I only recently played it, I think it was an excellent reboot on a series that was falling in the trap of making most of their games similar to their most succesful entry (aka Symphony of the Night, which I also love), they all are good games of course, but this game just made almost everything right and I love it for being so different to the rest, I plan on playing mirror of fate and LoS2 as well, but I'm a little afraid of LoS2 since everyone agrees that it's not as good as the first one, probably gonna watch your review before trying it

    Well this was a great video. I think you did it justice with all the praise and criticism, I personally remember that the feeling of adventure I got from the game at the time was unparalleled, you go through so many different places and kill so many different beings it's hard not to remember it extremely fondly. Weirdly enough, I think of this game as separate from other Castlevania titles since it's so different, but it's definitely not a reason to outright dismiss it. Also we have some pretty similar opinions on the rest of the franchise, which is pretty cool. Great video overall!

    I disagree with you on your opinionabout the fairies.
    They came in handy on Paladin mode as well as to the VERY END when confronting The Forgotten One.
    I'm talking about the skeleton warriors. And having to destroy them in 4 rounds. As well as facing four of them at once!
    And again. The fairies were useful again in another trial involving skeleton warriors, in the sewer before entering Carmella's castle

  • @cageman301

    Mixed to positive feelings on this one. The combat was really good with the amount of options available for every single piece of equipment you got in the story (The Cross, The Boots, The Gauntlet, The Wings, Light and Dark Magic and the subweapons etc.). The platforming was also really good, IMO the best of its genre. The graphics are like you said, still very pretty today especially on PC. Voice acting was absolutely wonderful, and the music managed to elevate an already good game to a great game IMO. The game is IMO pretty long for its genre, none of the DMC games or GoW games pre GoW 2018 were this long iirc, which is always a plus.
    Some of the puzzles were really annoying though, enemy designs didn't really stand out to me very much either, and the level designs weren't very intuitive at times like that one part in the Titan Graveyard level or a majority of the Land of the Necromancers levels. Some combat moves felt much stronger than other moves as well like the Somersault and its followup attack, and once you unlock the Ultimates you're pretty much a god as long as you have the magic to use them.
    I do think the sum of its positives outweighed the negatives though, and I'd probably give it a 3.5 or a 4 out of 5

    This game is still awesome even today. Sure many moments are reminiscent of "God Of War" & some of the boss battles are obviously a love letter to "Shadow Of The Colossus" ( which sadly the sequel didn't do ) but that's a plus for anyone that's a fan of those games. Not everything is perfect, but really the only complaint I have is that you can't control the camera. Hopefully we eventually get a remaster & physical re-release for modern consoles.

      Yeah it's the Personalized Music mod (for the original Skyrim, but I'm pretty sure there's one for Skyrim Special Edition too) www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/13286
      Basically it adds a whole bunch folders that correspond to different areas of the game, like combat, dungeons, towns, exploring at night etc.
      You'll also need the Skyrim Audio converter to convert the tracks into xwm files for the game to read, and then you need to rename all the converted songs to line up with there corresponding folders.
      www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/8303/
      It can take a while to do all of this, but the freedom it offers you to customize the entire soundtrack for the game I think is worth it!
      Hope this helps! Plus the mod page has a much more in depth tutorial too!

    Great analysis. This game has to be one of my favorite games in the past 10 years. I have one question on the story for LoS, and if it's considered cannon to the Castlevania timeline/story. I have heard many say that LoS and even the Castlevania64 games are not cannon. I was also told that the animated Netflix show is cannon. I don't want to spoil anything by listing out key differences around characters, but I would be appreciative is someone could explain it. Thanks Myk! ✌

    • @mykplaze193
      @mykplaze193  2 года назад +5

      Sure I'm happy to explain it!
      So Lords of Shadow is not canon to the other games. MercurySteam deliberately created it as a separate universe to make it an easier entry point for new players (as Konami wanted to attract new audiences), and it also allowed them to create a new mythology with Dracula being the central character. The two sequels explore this further, particularly with their reinterpretation of Alucard.
      Castle64 from what I understand isn't considered canon out of respect for the different development team that made it, as they intended it as merely a spin off title that was experimenting with 3D gameplay.
      As for the Netflix show, it's also not canon but is an adaptation of Castlevania 3 and Curse of Darknessthat draws heavily from those games in terms of characters and plot points, but it's also very much it's own thing which is why it deviates, reworks and adds new things to the story.

    My first experience of this game was watching my BF play it and I just sat awestruck loving every second! When you come out of the Veros Woods (which was an already pretty nifty nod to Simon's Quest), turn onto the snowy pass and the Castle first appears, looming like some glorious and monstrous sentinel, my jaw just dropped. Let me finish the summary because u said u didnt finish the game.. And i agree with you. The final battle is very difficult.
    -
    At the climax of the final battle between Gabriel and The Forgotten One. Gabriel almost lost to The Forgotten One but he managed to take The Forgotten One's power and use it to defeat him. After that Gabriel realized that The Brotherhood of Light will hunt him because not only Gabriel already became a vampire, but also already became the powerfull creature (after he took the power).

      I never said I didn't finish the game...
      Also that's information that's not actually in the game and isn't revealed fully until Mirror of Fate. He doesn't say anything about the Brotherhood at the end, he just simply destroys the Combat Cross.
