  • In this video I take a look at the new Netflix animated series Castlevania Nocturne, based on the 1993 game Castlevania Rondo of Blood, and explore the changes that have been made in translating the game into a new medium, and why the show isn't as bad as some people are saying.

Sure, I think Nocturne gets more hate than it deserves, but I think the points are blown out of proportion, not wrong. There’s a lot of poor execution and writing. Just one example, Annette’s former slave-master. He’s the initial motivator for her anger and hate towards vampires, and that hate even leads to her friend dying. The resolution for this was just Annette coincidentally finding him 30 ft away while she was doing something completely different, and the fight only amounts to her almost instantly trapping and killing him.

They had to resolve her character arc quickly so that they could develop her and Richter's romance. See how quickly they reconciled after he came back? From now on it's easy sailing.

    • @aden9160
      @aden9160 11 месяцев назад +21

@@williampearson6299 I don't think it's that they "reconciled" but that there wasn't time to have a proper one given the urgency of their situation. I feel like it'll definitely come up again as a sore spot, and leaves a lot of ground to cover for further character/relationship development. Annette's lack of personal accountability and lack of external awareness makes sense because of her hyper-fixation on vengeance and retaliation - who wouldn't be in the same position?
I definitely agree with how quickly the conflict with Annette vs her former SM seems to have been "resolved" - but it holds a lot more water if you look at it through the lens of the SM as merely a component of the system she's trying to deconstruct and revolutionize. Given Netflix's history with cancellations, I can understand the strange pacing via writing and production constraints/limitations.
Especially when you re-visit Castlevania S1 which only had 4 episodes, and establishing that series had significantly less factors to consider in terms of character development and the antagonist plots that it set up. The original series set up C:N with a lot of ground to cover which, what I feel, does leave the viewer unsatisfied - but I think that's a good thing! If you're able to sit through the entire series with interest, and still have the capacity to point out issues or conflicts with it - then I believe it did a good job of leaving the audience wanting more.
Initially, I was not under the impression I had written out immediately after finishing C:N S1 - but it did leave me with a LOT to think about and theorize upon.

We still need to get to know Annette and Annette is plenty accountable - she's a child raised a slave trying to fight demons. Is she an expert at love and relationships? And I think we are all a bit careful when it comes to characters like her, she has no room to have flaws like everyone else.

I know fan of shows that have suffered from that type of writing but this show was the furthest from that point it's true they did add a new character but I never felt that they gave her too many Mary Sue moments because they actually gave her just enough screen time and character development to Showcase that she's not always right and that she's just as flawed as the other characters. Meanwhile for Richter I feel like displayed Great Character Arc when it came down to him facing his trauma especially when he got his powers back. I can't blame Richter for being traumatized, but I can also understand why Annette wouldn't exactly be sympathetic about it. She had to watch a vampire kill her mother in front of her too, but she didn't get to run away afterwards and take a boat back to France where she had an adoptive family waiting. She had to get up the next morning to work on the plantation run by her mother's killer, at least until she escaped and trained to hunt down him down in revenge. After going through all that, of course she's going to look at Richter running away screaming from his mother's killer the instant he appears, which also happens to ruin her rescue/mercy killing plan by the way, and think he's a coward. Not saying it's right, but it is understandable.

  • @xleaselife
    @xleaselife 9 месяцев назад +25

It absolutely deserves to be called out for its issues. The fact that Richter is shoved into the background of his own show for six episodes to develop the backstory of another character is just absurd. There are 8 episodes, and five of those are dedicated to Annette's background. And there's more screen time for Edouard's singing than there is development of Richter or Maria's characters. It's a massive issue of pacing, as the events that are tied to the central conflict are ground to a halt for over half, maybe 2/3 the runtime. From a writing perspective, that's just poor form.
Gorgeous show with some impressive action, fantastic voice acting. But this should have been a spinoff or have these backstories interspersed throughout a second season, not dominate the introduction to the story of the Belmont widely considered to be the favourite amongst fans. It has a pacing problem, but so did the previous series, yet we still loved it. I also think the changes to the source material is a welcome one. It added more substance to the simple "man saves girl from vampire" and it honestly gave vlad a break. And for those saying that the creators of the show hate the source material, I'd say it was inevitable that big changes were going to happen anyway. With how the last show ended, all the changes they made for that one is gonna have lasting effects on any new castlevania series they make. I'm just glad that nocturne is still as good as it is.

    • @callumjohnston858
      @callumjohnston858 11 месяцев назад +6

Exactly. Not to get all comparative, but my biggest problem with The Last of Us was that it kept so closely to the source material, to the point of copying whole scenes, even when the context of the show didn't support it. And the performances fell into this weird uncanny valley of trying to copy another actor's performance. That wouldn't be as big an issue in Castlevania, but the point is that it's an adaptation with its own story and context. Dracula's arc is done, and he's moved on. Dragging him back would be insulting to the audience and to the previous show. Changes to characters is inevitable because, well, the SNES and PS2 weren't beacons of quality writing. Don't get me wrong, characters served their purpose, and I loved a lot of PS2 games, but modern TV is a different bar to clear.

(actually the biggest problem is that Juste doesn’t have a blue outline and the music quality doesn’t turn crunchy as hell whenever he’s onscreen and also his shack isn’t an eyebleedingly oversaturated eyesore SO MUCH FOR ACCURATE ADAPTATIONS)

The series is not bad, but it's also not great either, the original Castlevania series had a great introduction for both the main antagonist and the main hero, meanwhile Nocturne's set-up is, meh, not bad but also not good.
The problem is that the villains we get in Nocturne are not interesting at all, at least not at the beginning, and the season itself doesn't have many great moments or plot progression.
It's essentially the season 3 of the original series, but without the Issac subplot, so there is almost nothing worthwhile in this season.
I get the point about adaptations having to be different, but if that is the case then picking Richter as the protagonist for this story doesn't make sense, because his story is so videogamy, characters like Shanoa, or Johnatan and Charlotte would have made better characters to adapt to a series, but they picked Richter because he is the poster boy of Castlevania alongside Simon. This means they wanted the popularity of the character but they also wanted the freedom to do whatever the fuck they wanted with the story, this is a Red Flag, a huge one at that, it means that the writers are perfectly content with manipulating the audience and they don't care much about the original canon.
As of now, this series isn't worth a watch, the story is lackluster and it's more setup for seaon 2 than anything else.

    Good points.
I loved this season. I was excited for Olrox - I don't care about the race swapping of various characters - the theme is revolution. Both the vampires want revolution to regain control of the world, and the humans want revolution to be free from the corrupt church and the monarchy that perpetuates poverty. The fact that most vampires are nobles bleeding the life out of the peasants is a perfect theme.
These characters aren't video game characters that always achieve their goals. I like Annette giving us lore regarding magic the western approach by the Abbot industrializing the Night Creature creation while Annette's ability to manipulate metal and earth and then return those elements back to their original state is a great dichotomy.
I don't understand the hate. We shouldn't get the video game for the show because that would be boring. We got a cool fight scene once per episode at minimum and got references to the video games (Olrox phantom skull attacks, Maria's familiar summoning, Richter's white headband and blue flame magic, Drolta transformed into the Succubus). They are generally following a plot that involves the characters in Rondo and Symphony but with some elements changed around for the sake of better drama and story.

they think the audience isn't suppose to critique those things but they can, its not "wrong" to call it out, they Ruined Annette's character, the sister being a revolutionary isn't needed and neither is the "Church bad" messaging that's so painfully obvious agenda pushing again
this plot should of been the actual one, Richter going into the castle to rescue the villagers after they've been kidnapped during that moon, including the ACTUAL Annette and running into various things in the castlevania, they didn't "flesh it out" they did the opposite

I didn't like the first 4 episodes, I pushed on through and actually ended up enjoying it. It was a little cheesy and extra, especially that one episode freak out Richter had, which felt forced to get to the power up moment. The general story changes and padding work imo.
The revolutionary narrative is a little desperate and Saturday morning cartoonish, but it doesn't seem to be the core focus after episode 4. I kind of wish Richter fought Drolta - but the Alucard ex Machina was a serviceable entrance for that character. I'm interested to see where they're going with this whole Sekmet horcrux thing. What they did with Olrox is great - Although wild that they had the audacity to make an Aztec god get willingly butt fucked by a Spanish crusader, but don't think to hard about the history of it I guess. 😂

Richter destroys dracula and saves the day, but then shaft’s ghost possesses richter 10 years later and richter goes back to draculas castle so Alucard then shows up to free him with grown Maria’s help. My only gripes with the show was how they did their investigations at the wrong time of day. When Maria's mom said it was time to wait, Annette said no, and it was time for action or whatever. I said to my brother, "It is sunset, it is literally the time to wait because if you go now it will be nighttime." What happens? It's nighttime when they get to the mansion. Why are there 4 of them? Then when they go to investigate the church they open their secret passageway in the middle of the day. Nobody saw this and said, "That's weird." How long were they down there? Not sure, but when they leave the sun is still out. Even if it was only 1 hour, half the town must have known about this secret passage. That's the one to do in the middle of the night. Assuming your secret passage door doesn't wake up the neighborhood.
Aside from that, I liked it. I especially liked when Richter said, "I'm the stupid one, so why am I the only person in the room wondering why we don't have a plan?" I believe Abbot and Erzabeth will be a major key plots in each future season here.
Season 2: The Dark Priest arc. Abbot’s ideals has turned warped has been fully converted as a dark servant of the night as he transforms into the Dark Priest shaft. The price for the new transformation? A virgin’s blood as he makes night creatures attack “Aljiba😂” to distract Richter thus kidnapping Annette & Maria anyways. Richter panics & searches for Juste as they plan a battle plan and a map (cue Rondo of Blood intro scene). He rescued Maria and teamed up to save Annette. After all the struggles getting to the Dark Priest’s dark church, Richter will face the Dark Priest in the end. Richter will face all the famous pop culture night creatures that he summons (Big Bat, Medusa, Mummy, and Frankenstein) & defeats him but his vengeful spirit lingers still as he said “No I won’t end it like this” (like in the Dracula X Chronicles) and performs a destructive magic around the church. Richter senses danger as he tells Maria and Annette to run as Shaft teleports Richter and posses him in the process leading to the future SOTN season.
Season 3: Erzabeth arc as she sends night creatures all around the world (Bloodlines stages) to spread her cult’s influence even more as we’ll get to see other Vampire hunters like John Morris and Eric Lecarde separately battling night creatures and vampires from their jurisdictions. Meanwhile Maria is also battling night creatures as she ran in search for Alucard after being rescued saying Richter hasn’t returned from facing Shaft as they hurry on to Erzabeth’s castle but night creatures blocks their path once more. After saving some parts of the world going to the final stage the 4 heroes was led to Erzabeth’s castle. The heroes battles her and defeats her but it’s too late as she summons a hell version of Castlevania to fulfills the final battle in Bloodlines and also sets up via Dracula’s resurrection in…
Season 4: Symphony of the Night as John is exhausted after using the fake cursed whip and Eric helps him & him also to return from their hometowns as Maria and Alucard continues their search for the Shaftwashed Richter. Death appears once more to take Alucard’s sword. The succubus’s sister tricks Alucard by warping the events of Lisa’s burning while telling him lies about the cruelty of humanity. Alucard knows it’s not real as he tries to call his sword and stabs the succubus and he’s snaps back to reality. Finally Alucard and Maria found a Richter but he wasn’t himself as they fight him but Maria tells Alucard she senses something behind Richter try to aim your sword there as they vanish Shaft’s ghost but his malice knows no bound as the castle’s was affected by shaft’s desire for blood lust and desire for true power as the castle becomes inverted as if going to hell itself to find the broken soul of Dracula. The castle is a creature of hell and together with shaft’s magic and lingering malice it controls the spirit of Dracula to remember the cruelty of humanity to confront 3 heroes.
Idk let’s see how Netflix will save this bloated show but those key points I said with each season should practically save the show without all the bloat inclusion BS and Agenda backstories.

These were the years of Maximilien Robespierre who drove mass executions by guillotine against anyone even hinting support for the old rule of law. Not these awful shows where they cherry pick events from different games to "make their own story". The dialog is horrible as is the injection of various forms of politics and the unneeded disingenuous race swapping of characters is also horrible. If they absolutely have to take creative liberties at least go the extra mile and make the affirmative action characters original characters. Not my Castlevania.

My introduction of Castlevania as a whole is through the first Castlevania series. I enjoyed the entire show (even though season 3 was really slow and kinda pointless in some places). I had no idea of the somewhat complicated lore (or lack of) from the video games. So when I saw that Nocturne would be taking place in France during the French Revolution in France, I immediately thought of Paris because, historically speaking, there would be so much death in the streets and corpses piled up, that it’d be perfect for aristocratic vampires to prey on people. I also thought that the head vampire person would be someone like Marie Antoinette or something. I was pretty disappointed that it took place in the middle of a (mostly empty) town in nowhere France.
The two characters I hated the most were Édouard and Annette, not because they were race swapped or anything, but because they’re just terrible characters overall. Annette’s character should’ve been its own independent character because she has a very interesting backstory, but her interactions with Richter and the rest of the gang felt way too comfortable for someone who just got done purging an island full of rich people. Like Trevor and Alucard didn’t really trust each other until like halfway through the show, even Supra didn’t fully trust Alucard until a few episodes later. She also is very self centered. Édouard is, in my opinion, a pointless character. I really hate his singing in every episode. I think the concept of a night creature being able to resist their masters commands is interesting, but only if it was ever mentioned between the two shows that sometimes the creation of night creatures can create some dis functional ones. Otherwise than that, I didn’t see the point of holding Édouard in a cell for multiple days if they weren’t going to study him or something, because you might as well just kill him. I like the gay Aztec vampire because he’s like the cringey gay fan fic character, it’s so bad and stupid that it’s actually kinda funny.
The story is slow and rather repetitive with the only good/awesome part is when Richter reawakens his magic and they play the bloodlines song. The plot between Maria and the priest is really stupid because Maria just says the same thing, like she’s Lennin at a communist rally in St. Petersburg, and I still don’t understand why the priest attacked Richter and Marie at their home with night creatures if the priest loved his daughter. Also, why wouldn’t the vampires know where Richter and the gang live? They were able to find him at a pond, so why not at a house outside of town? Another small gripe that doesn’t add to the plot but I felt I should mention is the potentially forced love relationship between Richter and Annette. I felt more romantic interest between Richter and that one revolutionary girl that lasted for a minute than between Richter and Annette throughout the whole season. Up until that point, I thought Annette loved Édouard. I only learned that Annette was race swapped and was Richters romantic partner in the video games after I watched Nocturne.
This season wasn’t terrible, but it’s heavily flawed. I would have to say that all the ideas were good, but it was executed poorly.

    • @Quick_silver007

Why should Annette be uncomfortable with Ritcher??
She spent a lot of time in search for him and met him fighting night creatures.
Then they had a discussion about the political climate in France and their region along with the presence of vampires. (Which they all collectively hate).
Eduard was a decent character, but I also hated his singing lol.
Alucard couldn’t trust any Belmont because Belmonts hunt his kind- vampires. And Belmonts would subconsciously be wary of vampires.

I just wish we had nocturne be longer. so we could REALLY get to know the characters, their struggles, their aims and goals, etc. I wanted to know MORE of everyone.
it's why I love olrox. he has motivations, his story and just his personality. the way he seems so DONE with everyone around him. how he isn't blindly loyal to Erzsebeth, but actually showed uncertain to her. and then also turning against her. the way he acts, not some blood thirsty sadistic monster. he kills when needed to. but doesn't kill blindly with no remorse. he's also shown to care and to have weakness. he was scared of erzsebet and was smart enough to know, he couldn't beat her.
Drolta also intrigued me, her modern sort of "dominatrix"/ succubus style of clothing and design intrigued me. she was SO different from the other vampires. and the fact she said she was a priestess of egypt, showed she's pretty old for a vampire.
also, the pacing was something I had issues with. not too bad. I still enjoy it. but... some arcs felt too rushed. annette and her slave master. she beats him when on a mission she wasn't even focused on. Or Richer regaining his magic in basically 1 episode.
also, I love how it's touching on how the night creatures aren't blind savage monsters. they are people. they do have souls and personalities. they show personalities, conflicts, and just feel alive. (while yes, the original series did do this. but it was nice to see more).
one more thing that I love of both Castlevania stories. is that it showed vampires having emotions. they seem so human despite being monsters. they have their ranging personalities. the scene where we see a vampire woman mourning the loss of her vampire husband pulled at my heart strings a bit. Hell, Erszebet dancing with the girl was quite cute, while also not forgetting she's a monster and fully acknowledging. she's just using the girl as a bloodbag and pet.
I don't like annette. now, I never played the games. so, it's not cause she was race swapped or changed. it's her personality. the way she blames others when she was at fault. She pushes out her trauma, about her slave master, yet she kinda brushed aside that richter also lost his mother to a vampire.
is nocturne absolutely terrible? of course not. is it as bad as so many people keep saying? no. but is it still good and will I still watch it? hell yes.

genuine question; I haven't played the games, but after the first show I got interested in the story/lore. From what I gather and what my brother (who has played the games) has told me, Dracula placing a curse or curses on the Belmont family and being revived various times seems to be, in general, the central evil the heroes fight against. If you change that you change the story in a big way. I can understand if you say that it would get boring him being the bad guy all the time (though I think the show can get away with maybe 2 or 3), but wouldn't that mean that a faithful adaptation (not necessarily one to one) just isn't possible? With the exception of the first time, obviously. It's like if you said "I don't think people wanna watch a blue hedgehog run around leaving a blue trail everywhere he goes" when talking about a sonic adaptation. If that were true (it obviously isn't) I could understand why people would think that, but wouldn't that mean that a faithful sonic adaptation isn't possible? That comparison might not be the best, but you get what I'm trying to say.

Dracula had a master plan of hating god yet his former best friend Leon Belmont swore to his clan will fight him. Dracula comes back 100 year later that's went he met Alucard's mother and that's where the first series of the show picks up on. Yet in the games Dracula is a puppet of cultists and the castle itself. As it is shown he and Death are tied together and each time they're brought back they're weakened. There's a whole subplot that Dracula hates being brought back which is first shown in Rondo of Blood. After SotN, there's other hunters than the Belmonts since Richter is the "last one" until 1999. The WHOLE point is that Dracula MUST comeback

There's reason why people are mad that Richard is not as powerful because he is the end of the Belmont. The reason why he's in smash. Many other stuff he's the little inn and the most powerful is of the Belmont.
The story reason to why that isThe Dracula saw the Belmont's getting stronger each and every time and Richter was so strong that he got corrupt. It was used to resurrect Dracula But this result in him being cursed and the Belmont's for centuries can't use the whip.
And this resulted in other people rising up the fight against Dracula in their place.
It's also result in Alucard looking into other people who can use the whip that are Blood related to the Belmont.
Which he succeeded in but unfortunately for them that bloodline can use it but it ends up killing them if they use the web too much.
Result in the main MC from bloodline dying His son release Richter spirit. And destroys the curse that prevents the bell mouse from using it and Richter's spirit says thank you for releasing Him and frame his family from his curse after You defeat him and the Diaz game. It's result centuries later to a new bell mock the pop out to help fight against Dracula the last of them which is the end of the story. But hes not as powerful as Richter unfortunately.
I say it again right this supposed to be really goddamn powerful because he represents the end of them. Seriously you just took a straightforward story and I don't know you can act stuff in it but you couldn't as captive as it is by adding more towards it. But what get me mad is they d powered the vampire killer to all hell like that thing should murdering Every night creature Every night creature should fear it which is a thing of the games but some powerful beings are just like it or vampires be like oh anyway.
Seriously what if sonic 3 did that too which is do sonic adventure 2 which is my favorite game and story.
Imagine someone's Taking a straightforward story which easily could be made into a movie Does it really doesn't need any changes how you don't even need to change the music because every music in that game fits the story you don't need no modern day dumb music plan.
Shadow versus the Bio Lizard Which support me is playing. And the entire lyrics of that song is shadow and when he's going to. Hell each care to theme song Represents the theme of the game which is live and learn. Sonic it doesn't matter which I love that song.
I'm a status as a scenario I hope it doesn't happen imagine if the The black lady from the second movie comes out of nowhere and tells shadow he's a grip off his ass and save the world because what he went through is as what black people go. While on the ark Or something along those lines. And you know they would probably do something like that.

Happened with Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc. There's enough in the original games to create a story that is faithful to the characters in those games. "Translating the game into a new medium" is such an excuse. The show reads like a writer inserting their fanfic into the Castlevania universe at least for the first series. Nocturne looks like someone really wanted to make an original script, failed, but was hired as a writer for this and inserted it into the story. Regardless of all its critiquie and or praise the main problem commes from the fact that you as a viewer ask yourself all the time, why, why why! There are so many things characters do and say that arent consistent, makes no sense in regard of what is established, lead to nothing, feels forced.
Anette and Eduard randomly showing up at the perfect time, Anett having knoweldge about night creatures while neither Richard or his uncle have. The Knight dude suddently having change of heart when the priest tries to sacrifice Maria. (There are no scenes that build up to this, all he have had are some random sex sceene who came out of nowhere with talk that didnt lead anywhere).
Why does no one in the church raise the alarm when the Necronomicon is stolen. Why does Richard whip and sword randomly disapear in some cutsceenes. Why does the whip sometimes kill vampires while other times it doesnt harm them.
Why does Richard assume his family is safe after leaving them in the dungeon. Why is no one angry with him when he commes back. Why is Richard and Anette having a moment? Why is Anette litteraly the main character.
Why does Anette lead the group in every sceene instead of Richard. Why does she get a longer back story than the main character and everyone else combined. Why does every cry all the time? Why does Richard not getting instantly killed aftee getting caught by a random group of vampires? Why does Richard who doesnt know if his family and friends are alive after leaving them for dead, awaken his magic, by thinking about how he needs to protect them?

    • @Peasham
      @Peasham 11 месяцев назад

Characters showing up at the perfect time is a staple of media, Annette was trained by a psychic who could see the future, Mizrak is repedeatly shown to be a true believer in God morals included, morals Emmanuel has completely abandoned, there is no sex scene, no one at the church noticed that the Necronomicon was stolen, we see Richter's whip being taken and him throwing his sword, this whip is not the Morningstar and acts the same as Trevor's whip at the start of the original series, Richter literally gets over his trauma via the guilt of not being there to protect his family, they're not angry at him because they're well aware that it was a trauma response, Annette doesn't get half the screentime of Richter.
      So bascially, watch the series.

Ans no your argument is flawed, It's not cause this show is geared to the female audience, it's a redundant excuse wokist use to push their damn propaganda. Olrox was a cool character at the beginning, being a powerful indigenous vampire, but then they made him nothing more than a gay inclusiveness token to mark of the checkbox. Empowering Annette isn't bad, the original character was nothing but damsel in distress, but making her powerful while belittling an icon like Richter is just another way they try to push their woke views. Also castlevania isn't made for just female audience, it's a franchise based on the game and the game fans should be the core audience for them to target. Making the beloved character like Richter look like a chump is just offensive to the fans of the series.

    • @gilgameshchosen
      @gilgameshchosen 11 месяцев назад

@williampearson6299 although they were "hated" at the release, it was still a commercial success. Although I do agree that it was a bad taste on the fans part, since even Haydens performance of Anakin, the way it was, was intentional.
But as for careers ruined, that's just simply a lie. The only actor who was affected was Hayden himself. But he has stated that he wasn't planning to be an actor for long. He just wanted to earn enough money to own a farm, which he successfully did after star wars. You can look it up in 3 seconds.
So , as previously stated, just because Star Wars or any other media u brought up before was hated, does not mean Nocturne is being "unjustly" critiqued by the fans. The show is a mess of a project with boring and dumb characters made just to check the "inclusiveness" checkbox. You can go around the comments of people on this video and call them nerds all you want. It won't fix the fact that the show is poorly written.
Examples: Orlox being introduced as a strong vampire who avenged the death of his lover and imprinted fear on the protagonist was turned into nothing more than gay representation token who "kneels in front of a strong female queen". Also, he told mizrak he doesn't love him in episode 6 and that he just sees him as a sex toy, yet he risks everything to save him in episode 8. The problem here is not that he did it, but the lack of any build-up. If there was anything that showed Orlox slowly falling for Mizrak, it would make their romance plotline much more enjoyable. You can say "well the show is only 8 episodes." Well, guess what? It's still the writers fault they decided to squeeze everything within those short 8 episodes.
Next, we have Annette. There's no problem with her having her design changed. The problem is how easy she has it and how it comes at the expense of Richter. She calls everyone children playing the "I've been a slave" card and saying how much harder she has it. She keeps belittling Richter the whole show, although unlike everyone else, she shares the same trauma with him and should be the best person to empathize with him. Oh, and just to rub salt into the wound, she kills former slave master vampire by accidentally stumbling on him and does that within 5 min, when Richter runs away abandoning everyone when he sees Orlox like a coward. All done to show how much better she is than Richter, the main character. Of course, it's gonna make the fans hate her character if she refuses to accept accountability for her actions, acts like she's better than anyone, and continuously plays the race/slave card.
Next is Abbot Emanuel, who is a semi complex character but is suspiciously a WHITE MALE WITH BLUE EYES who decide to abandon his family for THE CHRISTIAN GOD AND HIS BELIEVES IN THE CHURCH and serve the EVIL QUEEN. I would not have any issue with his character if other inclusivity tokens didn't make it so blundently clear that Wokevania tries to make a WHITE OLD MALE DUDE, a bad guy with poor judgment.
There's a ton more examples I can bring up, but at this point, it's a waste of my time. Stay mad and call everyone a nerd, it won't change the fact that the show is trash and so is your taste for trying to excuse blatant bad taste apologism in this garbage pile of a show.

Sure her race is changed, but it's also explained and fits in the narrative and world. It's interesting to see hatian revolutionist work alongside french revolutionist. Sure her character could've been handled better, but it's nowhere near as bad as the hater seems to think. It's honestly terrifying to see people just being openly racist towards the show, and masks it as a "insult towards the source material". Imo the changes adds a lot to the world building, like orlox being an aztec. I mean we already saw supernatural beings and cultures in europe in the first one, now it we also know that there's still a lot of things that we hasn't know yet. Personally I like nocturne more because of their uses of music, it feels more dramatic and iconic. Although I still think the dialogue is on the edgier side like the first one, I mean they use the word fu*k too often that it becomes annoying. Like listening a teenager discovering curse words and now adds it to every conversation. As for the characters I like them, they feel human, except for ersebet. The period was even called The terror by the revolutionary leader, Maximilien Robespierre. They were more of vampires than the noblemen from their times. The show is more concerned in virtue signaling than telling a good story, that's the problem. Totally with you on this. There's two reasons I've seen people rag on this show: 1 ) it's not exactly like Rondo of Blood 2) Secondary characters being different-coloured.
I'm in a weird camp where I think Nocturne might be actually the better series. It's missing a bit of Warren Ellis's snarky humor but it's also missing all of his worst excesses as a writer - anyone saying Nocturne 'drags' must be forgetting how much frigging time the first series burned on waffly navel-gazing philosophical monologues and character arcs going around in circles.
Nocturne feels fast-paced to me by comparison, and the tight focus on a handful of heroes who are REALLY NOT WINNING gives it a real feel of, heh, stakes, in a way that feels more personal than Dracula's mostly-offscreen genocidal war. Our guys are losing people every time they clash with their enemies, they're baddasses but not invulnerable superheroes, they're fighting a war and it's an ugly war where they could sacrifice everything and still lose. The grief and tragedy hit hard.
As for Richter, keeping in mind that this is very likely as you've pointed out, more like a prologue setting up its version of Rondo. I love how very different he was to our man Trevor and I love that they're showing him growing INTO the hot-blooded unstoppable shonen hero from the games that he clearly wants to be. He doesn't have to start there. It's boring as fuck if he does. Character development is a thing. Trevor got plenty. I think people should just relax and give it time.
I'm wondering if the peopl who have such a problem with Annette and Olrox had the same problem with Isaac, since they did the same thing with him. What are they defending? Game Annette's entire character was "Richter's girlfriend. Maria's sister. Blonde." They have changed 2/3 of those things, she's clearly still Richter's eventual love interest, and since they shuffled the familial relations a bit so Richter is a (distant) blood relative to Maria, it's PROBABLY for the best that Maria not be Annette's sister. Making her a capable combatant allows them to involve her in the action and not keep her as a sidelined damsel, all the characters can fight.
Oh, and she's black, and I guess people are mad about that for totally not racist reasons. Look, I'll believe them when they complain just as loudly about Tera being Maria's mother, blonde, and clearly a Sypha descendant instead of a noncombatant black-haired village nun, that's just as big a change.
Game Olrox was just a bald vampire buddy of Dracula's who turns into a weird lizard monster. That's it. Sure, it's weird seeing him with HAIR (beautiful, beautiful hair...) but I think taking the original mistranslation of "Orlok" as inspiration to make a baddass mesoamerican vampire antihero out of a dude who was really just a nifty boss fight is pretty cool. To me he's the most interesting character on the show.
Really I don't see any difference between Olrox and Annette and Isaac. They took thinly-sketched or nonexistant game characters and made them infinitely richer and more interesting people. I don't think there's a comparison between Game Isaac and Show Isaac in terms of depth and there's even less with Annette because - WHAT character - and sure she got turned into a vampire in one story ending in the games, BUT they've clearly just given that story to a different character...for now.
This is also just SEASON ONE. Remember the first Season One? It was decent, but nowhere near as good as Season 2. Nocturne feels more focused, there's no random tangents like the extended goat-fucking joke or the whole Sumi/Taka plotline, or the fact that Carmilla and Isaac's storylines are total sidequests and they never even meet the protagonists, or (even as a game fan I'll acknowledge this) the Final Final Boss coming out of freaking NOWHERE if you aren't already fan of the games. I loved the first show, Trevor/Sypha/Alucard were amazing, Dracula was amazing, the action and dialogue were a lot of fun, but taking off rose-coloured glasses, it had its flaws, and Nocturne fixes a lot of them, and that's a good thing.
I guess I'm saying that I wish people would chill out and give things a chance. I love the games, I loved both shows, and I'm excited that we are getting more epic Castlevania stories in 2023.

I will say I do like this season a lot And I'm shocked that is getting so much hate however I do recognize It does have some flaws And I think the biggest flaw is that the writing just isn't as strong as the previous season since Warren Ellis it's not on the helm of this series so even character funny banter isn't as strong as the previous season.
I still think it's good enough but there is room for improvement.

I for one think he's a fucking idiot for letting the LAST OF THE BELMONT LINE just live and grow up to become a seasoned vampire killer. Especially when in the original series we see the court of Dracula shit themselves at the mere mention of a Belmont. He'd be the hero of his people, for finally ending the line of vampire hunters that can actually do kill vampires, but no. He's gotta let this boy grow up so he can obviously be killed by adult Richter in season 2/3

Why do the night creatures suddenly have a mind of their own?
Why didn't the priest or a vampire kill the annoying singer the moment he disobeyed orders? It was made clear who the night being must obey in the last series. Now that's meaningless?
Why can the mom say the encantation to open the portal to send the machine back to hell when she's nowhere near the machine? Why didnt she just say it back home since its clear she need not be in front of it while reading?
Why did they seperate the characters in the last battle? You could have had all of them trying to protect her while she does the encantation STANDING IN FRONT OF THE MACHINE.
Why do the vampures need the night creatures at all? They freaking suck!
Which leads into the next point. Why do the vamps need the priest to make night creatures that don't harm a freaking hair on any persons body in the show? The vamps number in the hubdreds if not thousands. Why isn't that enough to take the city?
WTF didn't Annette free her friend the 1st time she was down in the cell? Why was he in the cell? Why can he convince other nightc reatures to take his side against the forgemaster wishes? WTF have a forgemaster!!?? Or a whole series since everything that was described in the last series in clearly junk now!!

I think the only downsides of this series is how the three protagonists reacts emotionally to their problems, but to be honest, they are teenagers, so I expect them react and act in the stupidiest way posible since they doesn't know shit about action and consecuences, but Anette was the worst: I don't know why writers make her look like a egocentric sociopath. I know her tormented past could be a trigger for that, pretty understandable, and for that reason it's pretty understandable she blame Richter and later Maria for their collective and Anette stupid decisions, but that attitude is more for a villan or anti-heroe, not a heroic protagonist. Overall I like most of the series, even Anette, pretty interesting character and I hope later writters explain more of this magic system and other african culture elements.

For example in the beginning she wanted to rush in with no real plan because she was emotionally which makes sense for her character. But towards the end she does end up making a plan with richter. And this is just one example of her development. But this isn’t to say the show was perfect by any means.

Why did the priest's night creatures attack his family, when he clearly did not wish to hurt Maria?
Why do the crosses hurt the vampire slaver when it was previously explained in the last season that crosses don't harm them directly and Annette isn't Christian anyhow to invoke anything?
The team consistently make dumb choices cuz plot. Fails recon, fails rescue, maria goes off alone and gets kidnapped, team fails rescue again.
Poor surface level use of French Revolution. Half the show is dedicated to new Annette and Eduardo who they fail to properly establish before expecting you to care.
Why do nightcreatures get to ignore the forgemaster when in season 3 it was a massive plot point that nightcreatures are loyal to the forgemaster, hence Hector having to be enslaved.
New Annette is a jerk to Richter the whole show and then they suddenly like eachother from outta nowhere?
New Annette knows what night creatures are, but not who Dracula is? Richter knows Dracula, but not night creatures?
It's possible they could pull it together next season, but this one was a mess.

    • @RennX21
      @RennX21 11 месяцев назад +2

1.) Because night creatures like to maim and kill anything in sight. It's their 'inherent' nature. At least it is for those who didn't have strong souls or some other possible factors.
2.) It was explained that crosses don't harm vampires on the caliber of DRACULA or ERZABET. There have been plenty of instances in the original series that showed lower level vampires being harmed by or fearing crosses.
3.) The 'team' did not make consistently dumb choices. You also offer no exampled to back up your statement so no one can even understand what you mean since there is no context.
4.) Poor surface level use of FR? The FR isn't even a main aspect of this show in terms of the greater plot. The FR and Annette's desire to create a fairer condition for the masses explains why she and Richter are doing the thing they're doing when they're introduced to us. It also explains why certain relationship dynamics are the way they are without having to spend an overt amount of time going into backstory when there's only 8 episodes. It's perfectly reasonable why Annette might dislike the Abbott whereas Richter took a more neutral stance to him at the start of the season. Annette is more revolutionary than Richter. His primary drive in life is hunting the night where as Annette would likely be a politician if Erzabet didn't become NIGHT MOMMY. He even says as much when he gives his speech about not not having to agree or believe as hard, as long as he stands by them. Abbott is more concerned with maintaining the status quo and protecting the powers in place. On top of him being a religious zealot, it's understandable why he would want to make an unsavory deal to protect the church's status. The FR isn't the main point. It's background flavor because historically, that's when these events happened. The main narrative is the Vampire Messiah, which is clearly explained quite early on.
5.) Night creatures have always had their own free will. It's shown it the original series when Isaac explains to the fly demon that his nature isn't something that is predetermined. While apprehensive at first, the fly demon eventually understood that it was more than just a night creature. It still had a soul. It doesn't have to live by the night creatures base desire to kill. Isaac used his night creatures not to wage war on humanity, but to build a legacy for the future. The forgemaster of this current series also does not do the craft in the same means that Isaac and Hector did. The Abbot is a less than avid user of the dark arts. He doesn't want to create night creatures, but he's doing so out of desperation. It's evident by the fact he uses a machine. That coupled with the fact that the night creatures put the bodies in to create more shows that he's automated the process to the point that he doesn't even need to be involved. He doesn't like what he's doing and that's why he does things the way he does them. However, the art of necromancy is probably best used by a human, rather than a machine. It's not stated, but hinted at by the fact the vampires cannot create night creatures themselves. Only humans can. In this case, the Abbot is barely involved at all which might be why so many of his night creatures have retained more of their original memories from when they were living.
6.) New Annette isn't a jerk to Richter at all. She's quite understanding and sympathetic towards his feelings throughout the entire show. Just because she doesn't like the fact that he ran away doesn't mean she doesn't understand him. Human emotions are quite a bit more complex than you yourself seem to understand. Annette is under the assumption that Richter is a certified monster killer who's able to handle himself in extreme situations. When Olrox pulled up and made Richter run away, she's frustrated because they were supposed to rescue Eduar. That was the plan at least. Richter's inability to deal with his mother's death at the hand of Olrox forced an early retreat when they had a clear objective. Annette understands why he did because she's gone through a similar experience. However, she has already made the resolve to fight against the monsters that killed her mother, even though it's scary and difficult. Richter needed that same resolve which he finds and later shows to Annette in the later episodes. She's also finds his newfound resolve quite sexy as she's clearly falling for him lol. And the same goes for Richter. He sees her as a strong woman and someone demanding of respect.
7.) You do know that she and her people were dealing with a completely different high level vampire threat with Erzabet, right? She eclipsed the sun with her own power and ascended to the level of a God? It makes sense why they're not knowledgeable on what's happening so far away from their country. They don't have the internet and most of them were slaves not too long ago??
You literally rambled incoherently about things that make perfect sense in context of the show without giving anything any thought. It's ok to have griefs because the show wasn't perfect. But the things you brought up are pure nonsense. If you don't like the show than just say that. Don't make up BS lamebird points and say the show is bad.

      also
Why do the night creatures show fear when facing higher vampires? the priest clearly hasn't met olrox yet. so why?
why do they obey other vampires when they should only be focused with their master's will. a forger's command is supposed to be absolute.
why race swap an important character? what is the goal?
why change elizabeth bartley to erzabeth bathory a completely different character but they can't do it with annette? instead of race swapping they should have just changed the name because clearly she is not the original annette.
why erzabeth declare herself as a messiah, their god and that she represents the dark when the story clearly says dracula is the dark. it is impossible she doesn't know him when he is older than her. she knows olrox, but how about dracula? (in the lore she is dracula's niece.) if she knows dracula, she should have battled him to confirm who is much stronger.
why the gay scenes? what is the goal of showing this?
what's with the living white horse? when in the games, undead horse is present. a "goddess" can't make undead steed?

The female protagonist is insufferable, the story is all over the place, I don't care about any of the characters due to poor development, the story creator shoehorns a sociopolitical agenda that's been shoved down our throats by the current establishment and legacy media for 7 years straight, and the sad part is that inspiration could have been pulled from just about any, B-rated isekai anime to end up with better characters and plot.
