    That arc jump was huge for only 20kv, but then I suppose that's because it's still putting out quite a fair bit of current? Nice Jacobs ladder set up lol, that was very cool.

      MrRedeyedJedi haven't measured output current, but 20kv at 10KVA in, it may be around 0.5A.

      Sorry, haven't got a three phase forniture. Home contract is 230V single phase 4,5Kw continuous load.... Without ballast, simply the magnetization inrush current will trip all the breaker son the line :D

    Nice transformer.Is 20kV the only medium voltage in Italy?In Hungary we have 10kV underground,20 kV overhead and underground and 35kV overhead.

      Yes. Whithout limiting current reach extremely high values. In this case hundreds amps....

    Can you invert the primary and secondary on this type of transformers, so you obtain high power high voltage arcs out of 0,4 kV?

      Yes... I run it powered with 230V between one LV phase and LV neutral. In normal use it's powered on the 20Kv side to get 400V/230V.

    Why did you used knife switches? Are they connected to ultra low voltage (12V or 24V), or are they passing 220V?

      To give a vintage look to the control panel :) They work on the 24V services supply.

      The whole setup, from pole pig to each control panel component... i don't remebere, but somewhat around 1500€

      So $1,741 American, man I should have known these don't come cheap. I'll just steal the transformer on top the pole outside my apartment complex. I'll have to get a 6 foot non conductive electrical wire cutters, then everyone will be mad at me for there loss of power lol.

      20KV with a couple of amps is something. This setup is delivering a peak of 2A, according to my calculations.

    I once see it go through PTFE insulation flames & a flash 💥 💩 so many interlocks on that cage !

    Does 600W HPS Ballast work with single phase connection? 230V 6,2A. And is the LV Neutral linked to the earth? And the arcing stick, where does it go? To earth?

      Used as a ballast for a hv transformer? Yes. Never used but yes.

      @@mcsaatana1614 no. I use only one phase. Input between one LV phase and neutral (LV winding star connected). Output between two hv terminals (hv winding delta connected).

      Produttore: Elettromeccanica Gonella, Brendola (VI) anno 1975. 20Kv +/-10% Delta primario. 400V Y secondario. 50KVA. 1,72A primario, 72A secondario (vado a memoria). Olio originale Shell K5, peso ignoto ma dovrebbe essere, se completamente pieno di olio, sui 4 quintali circa. Roba vecchia comunque, ha fatto i suoi giri.

      Daniele Barberis è alimentato a 230V monofase tra il centrostella e una fase del secondario BT. Uscita MT tra i contatti dell'avvolgimento corrispondente alla fase BT alimentata.

    Hi, just wanted to ask that how do i calculate what im getting out from HV side of the transformer with that 600W HPS ballast with single phase?

      Don't know... with no load you get something near the real output of the transformer. With load (arc) output voltage drops a lot because of the voltage drop in the ballast.

      @@MrCoccante hmmm.. would it help to connect 2 of these ballasts in paralel in series with the phase? I think it would lower the voltage drop then?

      @@mcsaatana1614 yes. In this way you increase the power that can be used, voltage drop is lower but always present. Any type of ballast introduces a voltage drop.

      @@mcsaatana1614 an arc welder is a good choice, you can adjust the power. Or a ground of reactors for mercury or similar lamps whit a total power lower than the max you can drain from the mains.

      +Pre- reloaded Simply is a three phase transformer powered with single phase 230V between one phase and neutral on the LV (secondary) side of the transformer (star connected), sat reactor in series to limit current. HV from one (primary) winding, delta connected. The control panel may look complicated but it contains the reactor, a variac and some interlock switches for a minimum of security...

      +Pre- reloaded I f you have used a sat reactor, if the current is not limited it may be possible that the windings of trhe reactor have too little inductance to limit current? what you have used as ballast?

      jobpatyahoo a saturable reactor as ballast in series with one secondary LV phase and neutral. High voltage between one HV winding. Never drawed a diagram of the control panel. It was denolished and in still under rebulid.

      Già fatto con i MOT, due in serie a bagno d'olio. Invece il trasformatore del video proviene da un'asta ebay.

      @@jorgebeniti6898 lo alimento tra una fase e il centro stella. Alimentato tramite variac e limitatore di corrente del tipo reattore saturabile.

      @@jorgebeniti6898 No. Monofase tra una fase e il centro stella dell'avvolgimento BT (stella) e uscita tra due terminali dell'avvolgimento MT (triangolo).

      20kv circa (un pò meno visto che sul limitatore in serie all'avovlgimento BT c'è sempre una caduta di tensione)
