- A short clip of the Defence Forces Scorpion tracked reconnaissance vehicle during a recent shoot in the Glen of Imaal. The Scorpion is a vehicle used in the Cavalry Corps who are responsible for short and medium reconnaissance for the Defence Forces. The Scorpion has a main armament of a 76mm gun.
Retired Scorpion gunner here. We in the Aussie Armoured Corps had our M113 APCs adapted to Scorpion turrets and renamed MRVs Medium Recon Vehicles. Withdrawn in 1990s. Crew Commander to Gunner, 'BRDM in tree line, 1,100, HEAT, traverse left, .....steady, ....On'. Gunner - 'Seen' Crew commander checks his scope to make sure his gunner is looking at the correct target,' Crew commander - 'fire' Gunner - 'firing now'. If misfire, calls out 'misfire, firing now' as he stomps his boot on the secondary trigger mechanism.' If another misfire, Gunner calls out, Misfire recock', crew commander, recocks primary trigger and calls out' fire' Gunner 'firing now' if another misfire, Gunner calls out 'Misfire stand by 15 minutes' (to allow for a hangfire).
If gunner successfully fires main armament round and destroys target, Crew commander calls out, 'stop, target destroyed. Next target, BRDM, in tree line, 1,200, HESH, traverse right....' and so on. Though in between target acquisitions, he may order driver to reverse and jockey to adopt a new fire position. Seeing these Scorpions conducting range practice, brings back memories of what is going on in the turret.
Small for a reason, they are reconnaissance vehicles which should be small fast, nimble with armour and a decent gun... Thats pretty much what a Scorpion is.
DFMagazine Why don't you join NATO?
Nazar Derkach Neutrality
If you read this df ik we're neutral but if we were to get attacked we're fucked
@@maidenaholic that's why I love it
The 76mm on the scorpion is low velocity, to punch through armour you need high velocity from long barrel with sabot rounds. But the scorpion is not designed to take on main battle tanks. Its pretty much obsolete 50 + year old technology by now. But its fun to see it in action and I'm sure crews love using them on the range. But in combat you wouldn't stand a chance in one nowadays. Anything bigger than .30 cal is going straight through it, game over.
Bloody fantastic the last time i saw a live shoot from scorpion was in the late 70s...many thanks saved to favorites
Nice recon vehicle. When I was in we had Saladin armored cars with 76mm main gun, a 300 Browning coax, and another on top, supposedly anti air -useful for spraying buildings but not much else.
The Alvis Saladin really was a lovely armoured car and it had a decent service life as well! my grandad was in the army when they first started using them in 1959!
00.39 ....You can just see a distant glimpse of Father Jack running naked on the ridgeline.
My Action Man had one.
so did mine
Mine handled the stairs ok a few times. Action Man less pleased, gave me the evil eagle eye.
Mine too loved it
Great wee recon vehicle.
Saw lot's in Germany
apparently they can be up graded given a good smoke/fume extractor (the gun fills the interior with fumes) light reconnaissance tanket used in the Falklands to good effect would not say they are of no use.they have there place.
hopefully one of the rounds ends up through anglo irish bank
If only
Nobody expects much from the Scorpion, it's main weapon is a 76mm gun and it's small form, it's main 2 weapons is it's 76mm gun, small form and the ability to get itself out of trouble as fast as it got into trouble' it's main 3 weapons is a 76mm gun, small form, fast forward and reverse speed and a BV to make a much needed cup of tea every 20mins
"Scorpion, ready to sting!"
Philippine Army have these scorpion tanks many years ago, and now it is retired ,replaced with M114 with bushmaster turret
The Irish army was busy spending the next decades outcasting the Irish who decided to fight Hitler for being "traitors" not defending Ireland.
Very sad that in my view, to treat men and their families as outcasts for simply trying to do what they thought right.
if you did know anything about it, you would know its a recce vehicle. the gun is small as a recce vehicle doesnt need to be the size of a tank.
your scimitar has a 30mm cannon, our mowag has a 30mm cannon...so what was that about the scorpion being the only vehicle that "come vagely close to british armoured firepower"?
Great design , thank you Alvis 🙏
Some serious leprecaun squishing occuring there.
@TheJWalshVlog What use would T-65's be ? If the Defence Forces were ever to expand into a larger force with the need for MBT's surely we would look at a western model. Perhaps the Challenger II for example. However as it stands there is no need for anything other than rec. vehicles
can this tank destroy a Pz 2 or 3 because it looks like those ww2 tanks has more fire power than this tank no offense to the Philippine army but its true scorpion is very outdated and used by the rebels disciplined army should not use it it should be hang if only UN can allow us to design and manufacture our own sophisticated tanks
Francis a Pz III could probably knock out a scorpion but i am not so sure about the pz II
Our terrorists don’t have any tanks lol
Funny to see when the tank reloads, smoke comes out of the hatch on the turret. Can't be that healthy for the crews...
could wash that in my sink
Andy Kane what are you? A fuckin giant?
Andy Kane how
Yet another person commenting about their enormous sink. When will this end? Show offs! Its probably just a swimming pool anyway.
Aviões de carga e helicópteros podem transportar facilmente esses vídeos de combate pro campo de batalha!! O scorpião É uma maravilha!
okay thank you for the Information we should have design and manufacture our own arms yes?
@XxXIRISHSNIPER I know, but the likes of Croatia had a smaller budget than that and they maintain a far more capable military.
Anyway it doesn't matter one way or another. Nobodies going to attack us anyway
They represent what Cavalry forces should be, unlike the US where the Cavalry is no different from a regular armor formation, oh wait, that's because the United States Armed Forces are controlled by the Military Industrial Complex, my bad! I will say this they should add some type of ATGM to the vehicle to improve Lethality.
they have since retired them! and nothing to replace them either!
@@paulhester1675 nothing to replace them. There are literally dozens of options coming into service or that are already in service. The British Ajax would be a good example.
This is what I call RECOIL..
@sarahooxo The medical standards for an armchair general are quite low. Allong with intelligence it would seem.
Is the 76mm gun effective against tanks like... let's say the Type 96A and Type 99A tanks.
It's a reconnaissance vehicle not a MBT, speed and mobility is the main weapon of this vehicle.
when was the last i saw a tank defeat another tank with a speed limit
They wouldnt engage enemy tanks anyway. Propably would retreat if one was spotted
Give me a A-10 and it's all over.
nz army used to have these
@XxXIRISHSNIPER €5,590,000 per unit. I'm not suggesting we should get them or anything, simply pointing out that if we ever were to expand (as unlikely as that is) they would be a wiser choice than T65's.
Just in case you were interested, the defence budget for 2008 was €1.27 billion
I love how those tank looks
Don't know why people keep banging on about MBTs in the context of Irish defence. Irish terrain is totally unsuitable for them, tanks were originally designed for the plains of europe to be deployed in large formations. Bogs, narrow roads with stone walls and hedge rows are death traps for MBTs. Think normandy - bocage and you'll get the idea.
average psi to the ground of tanks is around 7-9. average psi to the ground of a person is 11-12 so theoretically tanks are better for bogs or marshes, where people might sink, but tanks might not. how this works is that we have 2 feet that dont have much surface area to the ground. how much surface area does a tank have to the ground, a lot more. tanks also weigh a lot more but when you divide surface area by weight, with tanks it yields a better result so it allows tanks to traverse on bogs and marshes where people can not.
One Time Pad if John Deeres and Massey Fergusons get around fine, then an MBT (Chieftain? Challenger?) will do better. Theyll boost morale also.
oh yeah? prove it give me a website that will prove that this small tank can destroy the said tanks
Nice to see the old girls still getting some use, esp still with the J60 power...
No need for MBT's - look at numbers of Chally 2's now being mothballed. Scorp is more than capable for most roles.
What kind of gun are on the Scorpions
@wcairsoft javilin missiles were a better bye and so were the apc than mbt
this is the cutest tank ever
Scary amount of smoke coming out of those hatches!
It's why they were withdrawn from service in New Zealand - H&S saw that and analysed the smoke and asked if the Army realised it was toxic and carcinogenic. Army response was, "Huh?"
Yeah I know my names great isn't it?And the UK Are following the US into the so called war on terrorism. And the reason Ireland helps the US is because we are a member of the UN,and the EU,and the PfP,so we kind of have to send troops in to help.
man scorpions are small... we need some T65's got knows theres thosands of them left lying around in siberian forrests doing nothing.
I used to participate with these chaps back in the day I never knew they could pack a punch such as this I've been educated thanks!..
Not designed to take on enemy MBT’s but good for counterterrorism
Question /k/illers. Would it be possible to replace the scorpion's 76 mm with a L118 arty piece, creating a sort of ad-hoc self-propelled gun?
they could have changed the armament to the Cockerill Mk III 90mm gun, as it was an option. But no there's no way you could get a L118 105mm in the turret.
@zimmerman898 When have the British and Irish armed forces engage in combat with each other?
is it true the irish army have only 14?
do they even use them for piece keeping
Filmed about 30 years ago
@Predmarine alot thats how ireland got thein independance !!!!
@zimmerman898
The Scorpion actually originates from Britain, brainstorm.
@wcairsoft most is on soldigers wages not on equipment
j'ai fait mon service militaire a bord de CVRT et je regrete que notre armee ai changé de vrai bolide ces char
Esto deben de traer a México para combatir a los pinches narcos
wow it turns out that the scorpions are the only vehicles the irish defence force that evan come vagely close to british armoured firepower.they where retired by the british army years ago.
those 76mm low velicty guns just wont cut it on the modern battlefield and are only good for shooting up poorly equiped miltias. Good job the irish republic always avoided wars.
Can it survive 23mm bullets?
MUSIC LOVER maybe if it’s lucky
Do the Irish army and the tanks run on Guinness beer.
LMAOO
thats from gla forces !!!
@ruseriouslike just one? your very forgiven haha
In the Philippines it has 7
Little toy cars
@wcairsoft do u no the price of a chalanger 2

That poor Waterfall!
@sarahooxo good for you :)
have they ever been involved in any conflict ever?
Britain used them in the Falklands
Fantastic!
@The143500 challenger 2 best tank in the world
excelente video
saludos
Their missing a shovel gun..😂😂😂
that will keep thoughs mountain travelers at bay
@codcelticman Yeah almost one hundred years ago. Now Ireland is England's main trading partner. If one falls so does the other.
Its like the t34
Pure trash.
Endeed.
parang lata para
We're supplied by the U.N and we have our own for peacekeeping.
so youre saying that this small tank has a firepower well i suppose maybe you are right okay i accept your answer
what would be better would be if the Irish army bought second hand M1A2 Abram Tanks from the American army.
Brian Compton I would prefer a leopard 2 to be honest
M1A2 abram tanks are rubbish. t-14 armatas are much better. also since there is not a lot of people in the DF, having an auto loader would be very handy which the t-14 armatas have auto loaders
Cannell of Glory Thats a load of BS
The T-14 is literally a show tank and isn't in reasonable production cause it's design is ass backwards
To what end, who would they need them to fight against?
Can we defend our own country though?
And let other countries sacrifice its brave men and women when things go awry. Must be nice to be able to stay above the fray and ignore Hitler and Mao......
Fuckin' idiot, Ireland is the only country in the world to stand ALONE against the might of Briton for six hundred years, count up the number of Irish murdered by the crown, a close second to Hitler. You're talking through your arse so go and read some real world history before mouthing off, see the empire for what it is.
Oh come on scorpion tank ehhh its an infantry supp. Tank not and and tank on tank
Wrong, it's a reccy tank.
Jake Nigel Dela Cruz cvrt, combat vehicle RECONNAISSANCE tracked
Thats cute
Stand in its firing range and come back and tell me how 'cute' they are.
@@nasiunainaheireann4122 why dont you? You thought of it right? Lol
ye tell the government to end the embargo and then maybe we will join .
you are kidding, right? Why do the Irish think they are the greatest peacekeeping nation on earth? Sure they contribute, but tens of nations contribute more peacekeepers to more missions. Strange how you think your contributions to the world are so enormous.
skipbitman4 it's because we're a small nation with limited man power unlike a nation like India or canada
skipbitman4 shut up
Not that I give a crap but my country, Canada, has been involved in 15 peacekeeping missions versus 9 for Ireland. It was former Canadian Prime Minister, Pearson, who established peacekeeping (Suez, 1956). Moreover, Canada has suffered more falaities (115 vs 90). The difference, however, is while Ireland sat on its collective arse and pontificated to the world, Canada fought in WW I and II, the Korean War, the Gulf War and Afghanistan. We were smart enough to avoid Vietnam and the Iraq War.
So the Irish were cowards for staying out of your wars, but any country that fought in the wars you stayed out of were stupid. Fine looking high horse you ride there.
skipbitman4 well Ireland have over 200,000 serving for the British army in WW 1 because Ireland was under British rule and not as much but still a good few and Ireland basically hadnt the man power or the up to date technology in their army cause they were poor and we still building a new country so shut up.and how many Irish are in your army at the moment or America's or autraila, new Zealand,Britain 80 million across the world now god help us back in the 2 world sure our population in 1961 was 2.1 million how on earth could a country provide amunition uniforms and guns for a war with barely no money ?
WOW. This guy.
@@bmurphy0296 80million??
@sarahooxo Whoa their precious, 19 and whants to be a soilder when hes a big boy, aww cute as a button. nighty nite petal ;)
