Alba Armengou nails this performance of one of my top ten jazz pieces. Her cute accent only adds to the charm of this fine songstress. Ignasi Terraza plays like he has three hands, so wonderful. Joan Mar Sauqué's trumpet solo was nothing short of Davis!!! Alba just ended the song as I am writing and she hits that high note that made the hair on the back of my neck tingle with delight. The trombone work by John Aldred is priceless. I find it hard to comprehend the sheer avalanche of talent that is flowing out of Spain due to Joan Chimarro's work. I am lost for words really.
Music from a time when I wasn't even born. And I'm not the youngest. And yet the interpretations of the young and professional musicians around Joan Chamorro radiate a topicality, as if they had only just been written for her. If you then listen to one of the originals, they sound more like yesterday. That's what makes these talented young people so magical. They make old things young again. Even the audience sometimes ;-) Thank you
Diría que Alba es uno de los "colosos" (¿debería decir "colosas"...?😊) que han surgido de la SAJB. Es grande tanto cantando como tocando, mostrando una gran sensibilidad siempre.
You can’t learn jazz just by listening. It has to be handed down from the older to the younger. Same as classical really - good teachers and mentors are required.
@@paulparoma I don't know. Joan has made so many of these youngsters into jazz musicians at various levels. If you mean the ability to solo fluently, I'm sure that is quite rare. But don't you think jazz includes a wider range of talent than just improvising?
Y perdón. Me referí a los jóvenes. Afortunados ellos de contar con el apoyo de adultos de tanta categoría. Gracias a unos y a otros por dejarnos disfrutar de su sentido arte.
So, get this: It just popped up on my feed, and I just listened to "No Moon At All" sung by Doris Day. This is a classic that I never heard - and the tempo is slightly slower. The arrangement on this cover is a bit up-tempo and all the players are hitting their marks solidly. BUT what is so amazing is that Alba's vocals are so much crisper than Day's. She really knocks it out of the park - she's more expressive! Hey, can anyone explain to me the difference between swinging and creating a grove? It seems, over and over, that Joan and the SAJB go beyond Swing and create groves that are truly infectious.
Oh my God, they are reliving all of my very favorite music. It is getting so I don't listen to any other music lately! Best jazz around today and it is so good it is addictive! Can't get enough! John Allred's trombone solo is epic! Wow!
Great! I love John Allred's trombone solo, especially his brief opening quote from 'Topsy Part 2' . I loved all the solos, the band, and of course Alba. But what I love best is the way everyone in the band listens and attends to the soloists. No wonder they develop so quickly. Well done all!
THIS IS JAZZ!!! When you think you heard the best of the Sant Andreu jazz Band, you stumble upon another gem. This is truly amazing! WOW! Alba Armengou keeps getting better and better. Ignasi Terraza on piano is always great. And, wait, who's that guy on the trombone... Joan Allred... Wow! The whole band swings!
i remember the original of this with Ann Richards and Stan Kenton - it took me many years to get hold of that recording. I love this version from the incredible talent of Barcelona. As a drummer of many years standing, I would like to mention the girl in this band - she really knows how to swing, and her feel for the music is wonderful to hear. Just brilliant!
That's Abril Sauri on drums -- and I agree with you, she's long been one of my favorites. Sometimes (not often) she sings as she drums, and does a great job!
No disrespect to Cecile McLorin Salvant intended, there is a great video with her and Andrea Motis from Berne some months ago, but I just compared this multiple-times Grammy winner with Alba Armengou and have begun to wonder how many Grammys Alba is going to collect within the next years.
In the middle of concerts, recording sessions, trips to many countries, create new talents each month and repertoire for trios, quartets, quintets, or the band... the teachers and coaches team must be also credited for their fabulous job... and the "older" young musicians, parents, friends helping as auxiliary teachers... What a new talent factory !
Thanks again Joan for posting another winner! And like @Paul Mason, count me in for DVDs too! It's such a blast to actually see the kids just killing it. When it's audio only, of course it's great, but they're so damn good you can forget these are mostly teenagers - they sound like a pro band anywhere in the world!
What a simply, natural beauty Alba has, nice presentation from this talented young lady. Band and all solos great in this but- John on the trumbon just grabbed me as he entered. My favorite instrument so, I'm a bit prejudiced for it. Thanks everyone and Joan Monne arreglo
Я сейчас в Барселоне, и счастлив осознавать, что где-то рядом со мной такие замечательные музыканты. Effortless beauty by the youngsters. ¡Y el Mágico de la piano Señor Ignasi Terraza! Gracias a todos por sus talentos. Bendición a Maestro Joan Chamorro.(perdona me, español no es mi primera lengua)☮&❤
It is great to see and listen to a band of such talented musicians young lady giving an assured reading of such a mature song as this one. Her sophistication is pure joy.
Alba and the gang... Swingin' it!!! This band is TIGHT!!! Thanks Joan!! ----- About my 8th time listening to this wonderful rendition. GREAT solos. And only a brilliant instrumentalist could phrase and riff the way Alba does, IMHO.
This is top of the bill! I was (once again) touched by the fact that this is old(er) and young(er) playing in such a brillant harmony. Terrific! Can’t stop listening 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've been waiting a long time for this video -- it's my favorite song on Alba's CD, I just love it! Not only does she kill it vocally, but every single one of the solos is great -- and there are lots of them! And on top of all that, the band as an ensemble just sounds so tight and in sync -- they're firing on all cylinders! Thanks and congrats Joan, this is a keeper for sure! (PS, kudos to Abril for providing a great rhythm base for all of them to build on)

Superb. Alba is a fine vocalist.
These performances just get better and better. Jazz is alive and blooming again with the help of Joan Chamorro and these brilliant young musicians.
Exactly!!!
Joan surely has overcome the gap between old and new. And he has made old new again. Because jazz never dies.

Ignasi is two persons - his left hand and his right hand, unbelievable, brillant!
He must be ambidexterous like Erroll Garner and other brilliant jazz pianists
Independent hands, that's what pianists (big and small) are taught from the start - Ignasi masters it perfectly!
I echo Martin’s praise of Ignasi. His playing is out of this world!’
Ignasi is a master jazzman he sits amongst all the masters
Maybe because he's blind. His hands are his eyes on the piano
The fabulous Alba and the gang does it again :) Hope her Thumbs got better.
This is one of Alba's strongest performances. Wonderful.
Amazing. Can't believe I missed this one. The band and soloists are cookin'. Love the ending where Alba hits the high notes.
This is outstanding. Alba keeps growing with her vocals. The Allred solo is great. Congratulations to all.
Again a fantastic performance by a classic and I say that Alba is the new queen of SAJB
