Whether the visual position exists or not visuals has and will always overshadow talent in K-pop. The obsession with beauty isn’t just a K-pop thing, it is ingrained in Koreas culture. Your appearance is taken into consideration more than your skill/personality. Koreans will always value looks over everything else. That is why even groups without visual positions such as NMIXX, New Jeans, LE SSERAFIM are given “unofficial” visuals by the GP (Sullyoon, Minji, & Kazuha). Koreans will always look for a visual in a group. Even international fans are guilty of doing this. And even when there is an official visual but fans/GP doesn’t think that idol is worthy of that title they will make the member who they think looks better as an unofficial visual along with the real visual. Or they advocate so hard for an idol that it forces the company to make their pick an official visual too (ex: Miyeon of G IDLE and Karina of Aespa). Even stans of non visuals praise their favs looks more than they do their talent. Non visuals do get praised for their talent especially more in comparison to idols who are genuinely “just a visual” but stans still talk about their bias looks more than their talent. These stans are not much different from stans of visuals. In K-pop it’s always been looks> music> personality/image>talent, and it’s going to be like that for a long time. This whole visual debacle will only stop once Korean society dismantles their looks over everything mindset, and it won’t happen overnight.
