- Friedland 603/Maestro Westminster Chime Door Bell Vintage 1975.
Motor driven with unique vibrato feature that makes it sound like no other door chime.
This model was used by Paul McCartney for the intro to the hit Wings song 'Let 'Em In'
It was also George and Mildred's doorbell in the classic British sitcom.
That must be the most perfect doorbell sound ever!
The vibrato is the iing on the cake.
Open the door, and let em in!
Wings.
George and Mildred also had one in their house in the 1970s comedy series.
Paul McCartney's 1976 song from Speed Of Sound Let Em In Brought me here
That's lovely, same principle as a vibraphone! Do you remember friedland's retail fixture that had all their range on, you could go into the shop and press the buttons to hear the different ones before buying. I'm sure I drove the shopkeepers mad.
I remember the retail fixture well, in a shop called May's in Leicester, I also enjoyed pressing all the buttons. I am still using the one my dad bought in 1975, this one I found on eBay and refurbished it and it has now resold.
I used to annoy the shopkeepers with their display chimes too. Friedland chimes were sold by GE in the USA, but a couple of models like this and the square-tubed York never made it over here.
There was one of those displays here in Dublin too in the 70s, in Roches Stores, downstairs. Best fun a kid could have down there I can tell you, there was nothing else entertaining. The harsh buzzer must have really pissed off the shopkeepers. Bzzzz
I have always loved the Westminster chimes. Westminster chimes are a classic old fashioned chime.
someone's knocking at the door somebody's ringing the bell
George and Mildred brought me here
Love this model! Westminster chimes played on tone bar reeds is not very common, most of the time it was with the long tube chimes
These seem to be incredibly rare. Any idea where I might be able to buy one?
I think your only chance is on ebay, that is where I found this one but it took many months to find. I have one that I still use today that my Dad bought in 1974.
@@ShangriLa523218 Cheers, I’ll keep an eye out! Classic bit of 70s tech!
One has just turned up on ebay
They are asking £199 for it.
Your best hope is charity and junk shops in case of a house clearance.
@Melvyn Anderson my late mother had a cheaper version my parents bought about 1970 but when she went into a care home I never thought to save it. It was plastic cased made by Phillips I think.
Georg e and Mildred had this one
groovy!
"Door George !...."
My thoughts exactly! 😂
I keep visiting charity shops in the vain hope of finding something like this.
What are the other unused electrical contacts for?
You can wire up two more bells, a ding and a dong
I have one in my home. Unfortunately, it no longer sounds like this. Some of the hammers ( not sure if that's what they are called) have fallen. Thanks for the video.
What do you mean by fallen?. This one just needed a good clean inside to get it working.
@@ShangriLa523218 any idea if these can be found for sale anywhere? I tried searching but no luck
@@brendanwatson9612 I found one on ebay about 8 years ago for £25(I must have been very lucky) I haven't seen one since, I refurbished it and sold it for a nice profit. I am always looking for another so if I find one I will let you know. I still use the one my dad bought in the 70s but that will never be for sale.
@@ShangriLa523218 what a lucky find, and thank you so much - that would be amazing! Definitely always hang on to and cherish that one your dad bought. Such a cool piece of history to have. And reminds me of Let ‘Em In
Are you able to make this chime play the melody without the "sustain" or "vibrato effect" on?
The vibrato works by a motor turning the mechanism with a small drive belt, you could simply take the drive belt off to stop the vibrato.
@@ShangriLa523218 I wonder how that would sound like without the vibrato effect (it's very 60-70s)
I have tried it without the vibrato but I think it is much better with it.
@@ShangriLa523218 Would you be so kind as to record it and post it on youtube? I hope you don't mind!
@@jbol2454 Yes I could do that, I have a couple of busy days but I will do it as soon as possible 😀
Can you buy this
I found this one on eBay and refurbished it and it has now sold again. The ones from the 70's are very hard to find now, they re-issued it in the 80's and they are the ones that turn up mostly. Keep looking on eBay they do turn up. I still use one that my dad bought in the 70's but that will never be up for sale.
