  • Stunned. Thank you to The Today Show and Yahoo News for sharing my story.

I posted this photo to be the doctor that I needed to see when I was young, dreaming of becoming a physician. I posted it for the thousands of medical students who are suffering from mental health issues right now, but are afraid to seek help. I posted it for other doctors and healthcare professionals, to let them know that they are not alone. ⁣

I’m a doctor who treats mental illness, and I take medication for my mental health. And by the way, I’m proud of it.⁣

    • @ritaevergreen7234
      @ritaevergreen7234 2 года назад +1

@@kittym.h.1926 yes nervous system rewiring is what somatic expirencing is. It’s like clearing a storage room full of stuff (truama). Low vagal tone contributes to health problems. A lot of people in regular health care are still caught up with giving antidepressants. My sister even helped rid her of suicidal thoughts with somatic work. Somatic work is life changing but finding the right one with a good background of what you went through is very important. I wish you well and understand being a MA is not easy work at times. And don’t be afraid to actually process your mental health issues. That’s the key component there. Taking antidepressant for depression will not rid you of depression. You have to actually feel your depression and allow the body to process it in order for it to move out of the body.

Imo a Dr on the meds they're prescribing, for the condition they're prescribing it for is going to be better than a Dr who doesn't have that firsthand experience, regardless of how long either has been in the field. I trust an Endo with diabetes more than one without because I know that they are competent in that field of care because it's crucial for their own survival. A Dr with mental health issues being treated with meds that has experienced various side effects is more likely to take you seriously because they get it.

Agreed. Most peoples’ experience on mental health meds are pretty negligible. Very few people experience severe side effects, most of us have fairly minor side effects such as mild drowsiness, increased appetite, or minor weight gain. If someone is being prescribed medication it’s after weighing the risks of side effects vs the risk of the illness resulting in harm to the patient. I have borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder and have been on a hell of a lot of medications in my 22 years. The vast majority simply didn’t mediate the symptoms, only one produced a severe response and it was because I was a tween and they didn’t know I was bipolar yet, so the Prozac triggered a manic episode. Another would maybe be ziprasidone, an antipsychotic that made me so drowsy I’d sleep through the first half of the school day on the floor of the orchestra room lol, and my doctor took me off it almost immediately. Other than that, most of them had fairly minor side effects. It’s a lot like birth control- yes, there are a few horror stories of IUDs causing ectopic pregnancies, the shot making people bleed incessantly, and the pill causing severe depression. But the majority of cases are pretty boring, and after 22 years of many severe health problems, boring is good.

A lot of doctors, nurses, and other staff feel the stigma and just being open about it helps people realize it's not that big a deal. If you need blood pressure meds no one cares. If you need meds for depression, anxiety, BPD, schizophrenia or whatever, just be open about it if you are comfortable being so. It saves a lot of lives and heartache.

After coming back from my clerkship year and reuniting with my classmates, I found that an astounding proportion (basically majority) of my friends had either started antidepressants, sought mental health counseling, or both. Medical school is wonderful but I and many others walked a very dark road at some point along the way. There were even days or weeks where I would have morbid thoughts of wanting to be dead or thoughts of ending my own life. Those moments feel almost unreal or unbelievable looking back at them now that I am in a better place. There has to be a better way to talk about this openly without being stigmatized.

Am I 100%? No, but I’m working on it and Still have shitty days sometimes but I can cope better, I have learned techniques to work through things. Anyways with all that being said I can only imagine how it is for doctors and nurses and EMTs, the stuff they see, the long hours, they people they have to deal with, I can see how difficult it could be on one’s mental health. It’s always nice to see people being open about mental health especially doctors or even celebrities, they’re people too and deal with so much, regular life can be hard af and even harder when you have to deal with all of that, so thank you for being open and honest doctor…

I loved your post, honesty, vulnerability. I’m am an ER RN. Took a few months off over last spring to get
Out of a mental health nose dive. Made a point to be honest when I returned about where I was when people asked. Many teammates told me privately they have been struggling too. 💕 thank you.

Just wish we could allow it with professions like pilots!
We're all human, we all have issues. Medication can truly help, and blacklisting people for trying to get help is... well... doesnt take a genius to figure out people will hide their issues, and that WILL cause more issues!

I have suffered with anxiety and depression since I have been a child.. On medication for many years. I know better not to stop taking them. The painful anxiety is waiting to return. I have been through enough experiences to add PTSD. Please if you feel that you need help don't be embarrassed to admit it. 💞

People assume doctors aren't human. I can't imagine the people who worked in covid ICU at the peak of Covid where the body bags were like rainfall. I do hope anyone struggling mentally gets the help they need. Sometimes it could just be time off work. See if you can get it if you need it. We assume we have multiple lives. You only get one and it is very short.

Universal fair treatment and help without reprisals or losing one's job -doctor's rights should be protected, too!
It's really something after that 30 year study came out about serotonin not helping with depression or anxiety. They have been pushing this stuff and it hasn't helped and it appears not to be the cause of depression or anxiety. Now, what damage have they done to our brains and bodies to adults as well as developing children with this crap?

Honestly if anything a doctor who understands mental health and what it can mean might be more compassionate if anything to patients. Or better know what hoops they’ll have to jump through to get help (ahem USA with insurance)

Why on Earth would I say no to a doctor who knows what it's like to be depressed? If there is a history of homicidal issues, let me know. Maybe if there is a history of involuntary hospitalization the situation should be reviewed. Disqualification for something like depression would keep whole swaths of the population out of a profession that actually needs them needlessly. My doctor knowing life can really suck only makes him or her a better doctor anyway.

The medical profession faces a lot. Who can work in the field and not be? No one really understands. When I first started working at a hospital as a unit secretary I thought I wanted to be an EMT. I talked with one of the EMTs and he said you know the picture you saw on the front of the local newspaper of us picking up debris on the road? We were picking up parts of a baby thrown through the windshield of a car. He wasn’t strapped in his car seat, he and mom died. The people that have to deal with that in the daily are angels. They take that home every day. As a nurse I take home a lot. You see patients and family members in anguish and it stays with you. Please be kind to hospital staff you think don’t get it. We do. It’s hard on everyone

Just because you are a doctor doesn’t mean you are invincible always, doctor, nurse or any occupation. We are humans, we are going through so much and you are going through so much, mental health is important doesn’t matter who you are. My mom is a nurse and has been for quite a long while, she tells me stories when it is hard when she’s very tired and watched people die when even though she did everything she could to help, still. It’s very tough not just for doctors but for everyone, we all have hardships to overcome, One of the steps to overcome things is to just say it out loud and take action. It’s not easy at all but I hope you and everybody gets well soon, with time it will I know it. Don’t give up no matter what you do, please, you got this. ❤️

Medication isn't always the answer to mental health. Pills do not fix everything. Mental health starts with going to a licensed therapist/counselor and finding what your underlying issues are. Some trauma induced mental health issues such as anxiety can be cured/helped without shoving a pill down their throat. Speaking truths about mental health need to start with helping the person with understanding before just prescribing meds bcuz its what the health community has stigmatized that is the only type of help. For some mental health issues yes, but not all.
