    The SWMS, in June, released a heavily peated Bunnahabhain for the American arm in celebration of Father's Day. 10.232 "Down at the Harbour", a 9-year in a second-fill hoggie. So good, I purchased a second bottle. I can confirm peated Bunnas can be really good.

    Only coming to watch this tonight - since on Thursday, a thunderstorm shot out the internet and later the lights for about 4 hours in my place.
    And it took until today for the web to be really stable again. So, watching it now - the first third done and the rest will follow after supper. Enjoying it tremendously!
    Good start into the new season and good to be back in swing! Although my being-away season is only starting now ... but hey, I'll try and keep watching from wherever I'll be!

    As a keen whisky drinker and an NHS healthcare professional I would have to respectfully disagree that alcohol is too greedily taxed. The frankly insane cost of treating people with a acute AND chronic effects of alcohol justifies the tax amount. It almost certainly doesn’t come close to covering the costs of people’s habits in fact. The greedy thing is asking other tax payers to fund our unhealthy habits.

    • @jeffmill999
      @jeffmill999 Год назад

      But, it ok for whisky drinkers to pay for winos' habits?

    • @Stephend005
      @Stephend005 Год назад

      @@jeffmill999 yes, we are indulging in the same habit. Just like if some rich kid goes up Everest- I don’t want to be paying to rescue their stupid ass when they get stuck up there- because they knew the consequences of their actions. It’s called personal responsibility. We can’t just be blinkered because this hobby is ours. Should smokers pay extra for their burden on the health service- absolutely. Also, however highlighted your reply needs an urgent brain scan.

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  Год назад +4

      You make a great point. We go to great lengths to promote responsibility in general; taste, quality and flavour over quantity and just drinking, and even dedicate entire sessions toward mindfulness and health. However, at the risk of driving our sacred space towards politics, I wish I was reassured that additional tax was actually going to help the health service. Still, you make a razor sharp point and I'm grateful.

    • @Stephend005
      @Stephend005 Год назад +3

      @@Aqvavitae Thanks for your reply Roy. I have been watching the channel for years and years so I know the work on responsible drinking that is put out. I know you want to keep politics out of this ‘sacred’ space, however in fairness I am replying to a political argument made by Ralfy in the video. We both know Ralfy is no stranger to such arguments so if we aren’t allowed to comment on it then it’s not exactly playing by the same rules. I agree that political corruption and tax loopholes are a huge thing, but that’s really a seperate argument and one I would agree with. As a society we should be capable of tackling more than 1 issue at once. Current evidence states there is no safe limit for alcohol. Therefore extra tax on items that negatively affect our health makes sense. In this system someone who buys more, pays more. With our small niche we are affected more greatly since our whisky costs more than someone buying a bottle of Bells, but no system is perfect. I still find it funny though that the idea of “should whisky drinkers be made to pay for winos” was highlighted - it’s like saying should people who smoke white coloured cigarettes be made to pay for those that smoke blue coloured cigarettes. Alcohol is alcohol and our body won’t discriminate. It’s yet another example of people not wanting to pay for a system until they have a moment where they need us to save them. Maybe at that moment they would reflect on their opinions a bit more critically. Anyway, all the best and cheers to your good health.

    • @seanreeves3503
      @seanreeves3503 Год назад

      I’m sorry but I’m gonna have to disagree with you very strongly, it wouldn’t matter how much you put the tax up it would not solve the problem. if you think for one second, any of that tax will go towards helping people that need it, Think again, it won’t. One of the things it will go towards will be funding wars.

      At £80 it was worthy. In the UK it jumped from £80 to £180 overnight. For no other justifiable reason other than optics. Placement as a luxury item and not to be seen as 'cheap' alongside other inflated cynicism on retail shelves. (Macallan) Shocking price hike. Good whisky. Much, much better stuff out there.

    Hi Gents 🙂
    I've voted on both years so far and think they're a great idea (OSWAs). Seriously!
    My only concern is that, due to the way votes are gathered and nominations sourced, is there a risk of the awards becoming somewhat of an echo chamber?
    Easy to be critical, I know, but I mention this as a fan and lover of whisky; and would like to see such populist/customer ownership of awards and critiques to be much more widely used: not just in whisky, but in all areas of society.
    Cheers!

    • @thosho
      @thosho Год назад +2

      I, too am so grateful for whisky awards presented with such integrity. I have never felt so sure that I was being led in the right direction from the award winners.
      That being said, would it be a crazy idea to consider switching up the format every other year? Yes it would.
      Here’s my idea: We all know that blind tasting is so dear to your heart. What if the Whiskytube fans were to pick their favourite bottles in each category, then after narrowing it down to the top 10 in each category, a dram was sent to each Whiskytuber for a blind challenge?
      Certainly, this would change the landscape in that us fans would need to chip in, but hey, who can argue with the value we’d receive.

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  Год назад +2

      @@thosho Great idea - terrifying costs and logistics...

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  Год назад +4

      We need to be mindful of the echo-chamber thing and also face it when it will indeed be a threat. However, in my experience the collaborators are all working to find their new discovery, new love - or "hot take". This helps somewhat, but it remains a potential issue. We have now, since last year, also cast our net beyond whiskytube to include licensed premises, retailers, websites and writers which also helps dissolve the threat. Thanks for the support and enthusiasm Rian!
